  1. Sorry I fell behind on this! But part 9 of the census is here and this one focuses on literacy rate! We know very little about the education in Eorzea, so unfortunately I had to change "educational level" to "literacy." So let's hear it. Can your main character read? Write? Both? Neither? Please note that by qualifying for any of these options, the character must be reasonably versed in the Eorzean language. They'd be able to read, write, and/or speak with relative ease and seldom struggle save for larger vocabulary words maybe. Please use your own better judgment to determine where your character falls. I've also included speech in this poll (even though that's not -technically- related that much to literacy...but it's an interesting addition I think!). As an added bonus, let us know if your character is versed in other languages like Garlean, beastman languages, etc! Leave your comments below!

    Tis a Pleasure

Welcome! I recognize that avatar from Zam~ Balmung will indeed likely remain the primary RP server. However, we will show support toward those who wish to join another fresh RP server (though one should be warned, Rp population may differ between the two). Should SE not speak up on the official RP server debate, we'll hold a poll here on these forums for people like you who want a secondary fresh RP server 8-)
  3. Oh, not much. Just recovering from the Eorzean apocalypse and all. Mourning my believed to be dead sister, friends, and ex-lover yadda yadda yadda. And what better way to get on with life than an upcoming gala?!
  4. This sounds fun~ I'd be willing to mentor one or more minions newbies. About me: I started RPing in MMO's nearly a decade ago (lolz). I started light RP in Everquest Online Adventures and then moved into heavy RP in Final Fantasy XI, where I resided for 5-6 years. I also led two successful RP shells during that time period, and as a result was privy to just about every type of OOC drama in RP existence. My RP itself evolved quite a bit over time, though I've always been the type to 'accidentally' create "epic" style stories that drag in surrounding players. This time, I'm placing an emphasis more on character interactions and personal growth moreso than epic stuff though. When XIV was announced, I established this site (formally known under the name "Castiel") with help from my FFXI Sylph RPer buddies and it gained momentum after a very careful marketing strategy that included gradual recruitment of all the scattered FFXI RP groups first. As an admin here, I've seen just as much craziness as I did back in FFXI's RP political world. Some of the oldies may remember that I unfortunately had a public "meltdown" of sorts sometime in 2011 I think  . Regardless, it made me that much stronger in the end and it was a necessary personal journey for me. In terms of my RP in XIV, I started out with the Order of the Stormguard. I heavily invested myself in this, so imagine my sadness when it disbanded and threw my character concept for a loop. I then transitioned to Outer Heaven after being approached by Seraphine, and that proved to be a fascinating endeavor. Unfortunately, it too wasn't meant to last due to internal problems. I did however have many fond memories here and am still very proud of the "epic" RP storyline I planned out within the shell and the super fun events that went with it. Once Outer Heaven dissolved (and the loss of several key characters/friends), I was further lost and my character seemed to be going nowhere. I attempted my own RP shell called Archavalon, but due to the game's condition and the shortage of RPers, I could only keep it afloat for about 6 months. I thus kind of remained a "freelancer" of sorts (though I carried a Crystalline pearl, but at the time, the shell was not heavily used as a primary RP shell by others). I continued my epic storyline via public events that were quite successful, thanks to the support of the awesome community. This storyline helped me eventually "reboot" my character in an IC way. By killing off House Mavanix through an extensive and overly devious plotline, and by revealing a twist that my character and his father were actually Felstars, I was able to free myself from self-created shackles and kind of hit a reset button of sorts without impacting any past experiences. I'm quite proud of this accomplishment, since I managed to avoid any actual retcons. I have three primary characters (and numerous "NPCs"). My primaries are: Kylin Felstar, Elza Ashfen (Kylin's sister), and Zarik Sylvora. You can read up on their wiki profiles for detailed information (or hit me up with a PM/tell, seeing as I looove talking about RP stuff). Elza will actually be played a bit more than Kylin at first, due to her personality being able to capture more RP opportunities with newbies and oldies alike. Zarik is a yet to be introduced character and will largely take a back seat at first to Kylin and Elza. In terms of RP style, I consider myself "heavy." I don't talk too much about OOC stuff (unless it's RP related). My style is also focused on what's "realistic" (realistic within the bounds of a fantasy universe where magic and monsters exist that is) with an emphasis on freedom of creativity at the same time. I prefer to focus on RP over game related things (though I try to often find ways to incorporate game stuff into events, such as modifying an instance/boss fight to meet the needs of an event). My character is level 50 in only two jobs, despite my playing non-stop since 1.0's beta. As such, my knowledge in game mechanics may not be on par with some of the other oldies. However, I feel I make up for that with my extensive experience in RP related matters. My biggest pet peeve: Vanishing characters/players. If I am to commit to someone as a player/character and commit to their story, I expect the same in return. That said, some people may find that the game isn't for them. Or may have real life matters that take priority and pull them from the game for a long period of time. All I ask is to be notified of this if you're involved with me in any form and be given the chance to create a RP explanation to one's absence in order to give some form of "closure" to my characters. I in turn would do the same in a similar situation. My time zone is Eastern (US). My play time varies based on my work schedule, though you will rarely ever see me online post 11pm ET unless there's a major event or major RP happening. I can't think of much else right now. I'll answer any questions though . Looking forward to having some newbies under my wing to impart my wisdom onto :geek:
  5. Hello all. This thread is brought to you by your friendly neighborhood admin. It is locked for obvious reasons. As many know, a recent explosion took place on the forums in regards to the age old RP server debate. Tempers went off in some places, and damage was done. The discussions regarding this have been temporarily removed. I want to stress the word "temporarily." Right now, it is in everyone's best interest to calm down. While locking the thread would have normally been a viable solution, it was recently linked on an outside forum in an attempt to further facilitate the argument elsewhere. For the time being, we should all just chill out and relax. There is no reason we should get so bent out of shape over something that won't matter that much in a few months anyway. The thread will be restored within a week or so. Additionally, I have (at my own discretion) temporarily removed the advertisement for a particular RP shell. The reasoning behind this need not be explained fully in public. But should the linkshell's leadership wish to discuss this further, I am open to doing so privately in order to reach an agreement that will benefit all parties. Thank you and happy RPing!
  6. I think most people's opinion on this matter is pretty well known at this point. So let's go in at a different angle now. To the minority that wants a non-legacy RP server: What exactly do you want from the RPC? Is it 'official recognition?' A subforum for events? What specifically do you want from us? We know you want a secondary server. We know you want us to listen to you, and we are. But what do you want us to do? I have no problem setting up an 'official unofficial' poll. I think it's very safe to say that Balmung will win by a landslide though. However, the second place winner can be named the unofficial "non-legacy RP server" if that makes you happy. However, Square Enix can easily undo everything once they come to their final decision on how to handle the official Rp server. I will state my opinion and prediction on this matter though. Even if you do get what you want, think for a moment why people are very much against the idea for the most part. What happens when/if the secondary RP server flops in activity once the population stabilizes several months after launch? There are going to be several RPers who are then stuck on a server where RP has become non-existent. Some will transfer/recreate a character on Balmung. But others will have made OOC friends by that point and will stay on the server, essentially giving up on RP. That means that the RP community loses more RPers than it already is going to post-stabilized population. So surely you can understand why people aren't very thrilled over all this? They're thinking about the long-term consequences, not the short-term ones. History moves in circles. This isn't the first time this has happened. Back at the start of the original game launch, a couple of RP shells broke away and tried to make a RP community on the Kachua server. It didn't make it. Not even close. There were also small pockets of RPers on Lindblum at first, and again, the RP community overall there became phased out entirely. Balmung remained the only server with public RP events, publicly known RP linkshells, and lots of constant RP and storylines. And we'll never know how many RPers were lost to the community forever because of a couple of people dragging their members to a different server. Contrary to what anyone may believe, XIV is going to have a nice population. It will not have millions of players, especially not in an age where MMOs are so abundant. Out of the already niche population (defined by the subscription pay model and a previously failed version of the game), the RP population is going to be small. Dividing it is a scary thought for people. So hopefully you can understand this side of the argument and understand that some of us have seen this happen already and know what's going to happen again. One can't compare XIV to GW2 (or other MMOs), where the population is vastly different. That said though, please tell us exactly what you want.
  7. Please refrain from spamming the report button just on the premise that someone disagrees with you. Once is sufficient. Thanks. If a subset of people want to go to a non-legacy RP server, then fine. Nobody is stopping you. The responses are merely warning you of the possible long term impact of doing so and stating that they're not going anywhere. In addition, SE has yet to formally name the RP server and people are very much jumping to conclusions before they even get a chance to. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Believe it or not, there are a lot of old and wise RPers here who know what they're talking about 8-) Also, we're not doing polls right now when things are as heated as they are. So please refrain from trying to further confuse the population. One such poll is already being considered, as the RPC prides itself on trying to provide an environment that benefits the RP community as a whole above all else. If a subset wants to setup a poll for a secondary server, we'll see to it that you get what you ask for But right now, people need to chill. PS: Some of the recent posts came across as being "threats." Really need to consider what you say and how you say it. Nobody responds well to threats.
  8. Just a quick update. Square Enix rep responded extremely quickly to the issue of a RP server: "The devs are still looking into this for now and there isn't any new news but he's (the rep) going to poke them again about it. " Edit: I should clarify that the above was gathered from Wint at Zam. He shot an email on my behalf to Zam's SE representative.
  9. I knew this would happen~ Now that I got the "I told you so" out of the way... There's not much I can add to what's already been said. So I'll focus on some different things that need to be said. First, I'll repeat what I said just a bit ago on the skype chat room. If you're going to make/use a second account to help strengthen your side of the argument (regardless of which side of the argument), you've already shot yourself in the foot and hurt your entire position due to using manipulation tactics. I'll say no more on the matter, as the guilty party surely knows who they are and I have no desire to directly call him/her out by name. Next, it seems people have already made their decisions before this discussion even began. It makes me wonder why even bother talking about it anymore if the decisions are all final? Third, I will consider holding an unofficial poll. Notice that term "unofficial?" It would not necessarily be considered a "final decision" by any means and be meant to better gauge where the community's thoughts rest. However, should one option win by a massive landslide, that would probably be pretty indicative of what the community wants. Should the results be close, the situation would obviously warrant further discussion and compromise. Forth, the RPC staff will be getting in touch with our contacts ASAP in order to hopefully get a response directly from Square Enix in regards to their plans (if any) for an official RP server. SE's decision (or lack thereof) could very well be a game changer for all. Fifth, let's not even discuss server population. That is almost never an issue. It was a waste of time to discuss it at 1.0's launch. While servers may fill up and get locked, they generally get unlocked again within hours (at most, a few days). Considering XIV's niche crowd, it's not bound to have millions of players. We named an "overflow" server in 1.0 (Lindblum) that was never even needed. And XIV had a huge surge of new members at initial launch (prior to people knowing about its myriad of problems). Finally, we all have to understand a couple of things. This kind of 'drama' crops up in every single MMO when it comes time for server selection in any RP community. It is not uncommon. So please, nobody needs to freak out too much. This is natural. At the end of it all, the majority always unites and lives (mostly) happily ever after. In addition, like in any community (gaming or real life), we have to realize that it is not possible to please everyone. Back in 1.0, there were a small number of RPers who did not like the server choice of Besaid (Balmung's original server name). They didn't join the majority and tried to go their own way (sadly, their groups didn't survive long, though this could have easily just been a result of the game's poor launch). This can't be helped and will be bound to happen. So while the majority will surely unite at the end of this all, everyone should still be prepared that the entire RP community will not likely unite.

Oh yeah! You probably never got to see the Sylph Rp tribute video, Hathaway~ I'm not sure if you're in any of the screenshots or not. I can't remember. I know you're in the roster lists at the end though. Ethereal and Rescue begins around 5:20 of the video ^^ http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/SylphTribute/
  11. For a long time now, I've considered trying to organize a weekly/biweekly Eorzean "soap opera" at the amphitheatre. A set of IC actors/actresses would play out overly dramatic storylines on stage in front of a live audience. ICly, everyone would assume there's a script written by someone. But OOCly, it would all be made up on the spot in order to avoid the stress of constantly creating a script for something that should be more fun than work. Not sure if this concept will take off or have interest, but thought I'd mention it since it could be right up the alley for this. In other news, my comic relief character, Valina De'Vuri (and a couple other minor comic relief characters) tend to dabble in entertainment related matters.

  14. Check out the current results of the first RPC Census! While not necessarily complete and subject to possible cleanup, this page will be kept for the entire duration of the RPC's life: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/misc.php?page=census-2013 We will hopefully have one each year.
  15. Was also considering this type of fox, but figured it didn't really fit Ky enough (even though it's cuuuuute~)
  16. First, I'll say that I'm 100% in favor of public RP. I'll agree that it became rare in 1.0 (though to be fair, there were only really 2 active RP shells truly still going strong at the end when the rest of the population had mostly vanished...). That being said, we also have to realize that random RPing in front of a huge crowd of non-RPers can seem very daunting to a number of RPers (myself included even). I personally don't feel comfortable Rping in /say when there's a large non-RP crowd about (then again, I also avoid OOC chatter in /say in crowded areas ). One can justify it all they want by saying "well, non RPers spam /say all the time with their random chatter, so why can't we?!" That's fine and dandy, but not everyone shares that view. I personally will not RP in /say in overly crowded areas (like the adventurer's guild, etc) or in areas where there are important quest npcs people may need to talk to. That's a personal thing that I have no intention of ever changing, and I know others share that viewpoint. Though I have nothing against others who choose the opposite, so long as they don't try to force me to follow their stance on things. RP communities tend to very naturally segregate themselves over time. There's no real avoidance of that in any larger community. At the start of any new MMO, the RP community tends to be very open and there's tons of public RP everywhere. Over time though, public RP does start to wane as many RPers start to hop over to new shiny MMOs or focus more strongly on endgame over RP. It's just the nature of the beast, like it or not . This is why many freelancers tend to get the short end of the stick by the time the community starts to 'settle.' True "open world RP" starts to become isolated primarily to pre-scheduled events. In regards to the city onry RP, I do agree that some people limit themselves way too much. But I'll play devil's advocate again on this. One has to realize that most people spend the majority of their time in cities (listening to shouts, talking to quest npcs, crafting, etc). And it makes sense IC for most characters to spend more time in town than outside the city walls. Take Kylin for instance. I can't just take him out into the desert IC anytime randomly without explanation. It's just not in his character. It's the same for many characters. I can, however, justify him going for an IC stroll within the city quite easily. Thus, a lot of the RP outside cities tends to be limited to linkshell/public events moreso than random RP. This is a cross-MMO thing though, and not at all limited to just FFXIV. Don't get me wrong. I hope to see lots of public RP. And with all the many hamlets and little spots filled with life, such a thing may come with more ease than in the past. But I also think people need to remain realistic. I'm only saying these things to try to prevent future disappointment. I want the RP community to retain as many of you guys as possible after all . So I'd rather not see some people get their hopes up and get utterly disappointed several months after launch when the nature of the beast takes hold, then jump ship for some new MMO hoping that the grass is greener on the other side (it's not by the way). I have a few MMO buddies that keep hopping from MMO to MMO, looking for that golden game/RP experience that they'll never truly find. I sometimes want to ask them "dude, do you EVER get resolutions/closure for any of the things your character does?" or "do you ever see any of your storylines to completion?" Again, not trying to be a debbie downer. Nothing wrong with having high hopes. I just want people to go into things with realistic expectations. MMO communities have kind of been on the decline as of late due to community members hopping from one to the next to the next, thinking the new community will have what it seeks. So the overall MMO RP community kind of needs to realize that the grass isn't any greener anywhere else when it comes to public RP. This is a common issue across the board, and the chances of it being eliminated entirely is next to non-existent >.>
  17. Nope, no merge or anything. Just a reskin/relaunch to go with the game's relaunch ^^. Welcome to the community~
  18. 1.0 characters should be in tact, yes. They're being imported for phase 3 (though they'll be wiped before phase 4, but brought back). Also keep in mind that the 1.0 collector's edition owners only get the digital 2.0 items (coeurl mount, etc). If one wants the physical 2.0 collector's edition items (soundtrack, art book, 7th umbral era dvd, etc), one has to purchase the new collector's edition. This also applies to the pre-order items (moogle cap and cait sith minion). 1.0 players will not receive the pre-order items unless they actually order the game (this was confirmed by a dev post the other day on the official forums). Hopefully that clarifies any misconceptions. Very excited to have my old characters back as well though ^.^
  19. Awesome. Look forward to seeing the rest~
  20. It's official~ FFXIV will release on August 27th, 2013! Further details can be found here: http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/topics/detail?id=14019fb32d90859f118dccb8cd96bf81c212957d In addition, a new tour of Eorzea video has been released:
  21. Kylin Felstar Kylin is a hyur midlander. I think Gerik got Kylin pretty good body-wise in one of his silly cosplay drawings here: http://i.imgur.com/FfT5x4y.jpg . A real life reference, actor-wise, would be the following: http://www.kazeo.com/sites/fr/photos/132/caleb-lane_1324590-M.jpg . He has a sole tattoo on his back, representing his past with the Order of the Stormguard. The tattoo is viewable on his wiki. Ky is now in pretty good shape after the 5 year skip. Not as bulky as a highlander of course, but pretty nicely cut for a midlander. Facial-wise, I've said it many times already but he's kind of a 'pretty boy.' I think people really misunderstand what I mean by this though. By pretty boy, I mean along the lines of someone like Zac Efron for example (lol). He really doesn't look all that different from his current wiki photo: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Kylin_Felstar Complexion: Nicely tan, as he grew up/lives in Ul'dah the desert city. Clothing-wise, Ky doesn't really wear anything overly baggy. He likes to show off his body with form-fitting clothing more often than not. This gear style is very much the style Kylin takes a personal liking to: http://i.imgur.com/F9GlsEp.jpg . That's kind of going to be Ky's signature style of outfits .
  22. Since our artists like doing random drawings of other characters from time to time, I figured it would be nice to have an organized thread where everyone can post references for their characters. This post will be updated by myself and/or other mods as people post! 23. Whatchu talkin' about Ronberku? I don't see any birthdays :? Anywho, welcome to the forums/community! Look forward to seeing you in the upcoming phases of beta hopefully (and beyond)!
  24. Kylin, despite having the majority of his wealth handed to him by being born into wealth, does have a job. He works for his father and helps oversee some of the affairs within House Felstar. More specifically, he's considered the head overseer of Avalon, the branch of the house that handles all excavations and the Avalon Heritage Museum. So he basically is the head honcho for excavations the Avalon team works on, as well as the final say on what goes in the museum and where it goes ("final say" so long as his father doesn't say otherwise that is). SHUT UP GERIK! IT WAS A TYPO rofl
