  1. My ideal time is somewhere around ~20 minutes. Discussing things is all good, but topics need to move in a decent flow.
  2. THM, R16. One Sacrifice (Single Target) or one Debuff seems to reset GLAD emnity. It's impossible to play like this. Tonight, I actually ended up playing the "suicide bomber" with punishing barbs.
  3. Emnity doesn't work properly. Despite a Gladiator's provoke, it breaks with only one single-target spell.
  4. I find myself being the of FFXIV now that I'm pushing up on leves. Anyone feel the same?
  5. I work at a LAN Center, so I can play FFXIV a good deal (though with a LOT of interruptions), makes for difficult RP sessions.
  6. Had a fun time with RP-leves, complete with shouts from morons akin to "STOP ROLEPLAYING".
  7. MMO Survey Please answer the following questions. If there is any question you are unsure of, or do not want to answer, feel free to leave it blank. Thank you for your time. 1) Over the past 10 years, how many MMORPGs have you played? a) One b) Two c) Three d) Four e) Five or more <- 2) How many hours do you spend online gaming per week? a) 1-3 hours b) 4-6 hours c) 7-9 hours d) 10-12 hours e) 13+ hours <- 3) In an MMORPG, do you interact with individuals you know outside the game? (i.e. in real life) a) Yes <- b) No 4) What is most important in keeping your interest in an MMORPG? Select all that apply. If you choose Other, please specify. a) Story b) Graphics c) Environment/World d) Fun Factor e) Continual Game Evolution (content patches, updates, expansions, etc) f) Community <- g) Other ____________________________________________ 5) Do you believe it is possible for MMORPGs to be addictive? a) Yes <- b) No c) Not sure 6) If you answered yes to question 5, have you or anyone you known been addicted to an MMORPG? a) Yes <- b) No c) Not sure 7) How important is communication with others in an MMORPG? a) Very important <- b) Important c) Unimportant d) Very Unimportant e) Not sure 8) Do you feel you have made valuable relationships in any MMORPGs? How would you characterize these relationships in contrast to those in real-life? Are there any differences? Similarities? Please elaborate. Valuable relationships are made, but are usually restricted to online presences. A few scenarios have lead to people being hired at my workplace and the like, but all in all they're typically online "versions" only. 9) Do MMORPGs offer modes of communication or support you are unable to find in your geographic location, life situation, or circumstances right now? Please elaborate. Not really. While MMORPGs provide another medium of communication, everything but the actual gameplay itself can be done outside of these, hence there's nothing too special the medium in terms of communication. 10) What methods do you use to communicate with others in MMORPGs? Please select all that apply. If you select Other, please specify. a) Friend List <- b) Chat Channel <- c) Voice Communication <- d) Guild/Linkshell/Corporation/Clan <- e) Forum <- f) RL Interaction (i.e. physical get togethers, internet cafes, etc) <- g) Other _________________________________________ 11) Do you view MMORPGs as a potential mode of story-telling, an alternative to book, film, or television? Why or why not? Not really. MMORPGs haven't developed extensively enough for personal stories to be created with the impact that books, movies or television provides. Sure there are possibilities for interesting and unique writing, but like standard Fanfics in respect to roleplaying portions of communities, but nothing that would make it through a book publisher. 12) What environments do you enjoy experiencing in MMORPGs? Why do you enjoy those particular kinds? a) Fantasy worlds <- b) Science fiction worlds <- c) Contemporary realistic worlds<- d) Historical worlds e) Frightening/ horrific worlds f) Other _______________________________ Fantasy is a staple. Easy to make, easy to invent your own rules. Granted, the market is flooded by them. They are getting stale, however compelling fantasy worlds always seem fresh and interesting. Science Fiction is one that has been tried, and ultimately hasn't worked out well. Some people blame it on the setting, I frankly believe it's a lack of decent design in these games. Science Fiction suits me better than any other as I love technical backgrounds and explanations. IE: EvE Online, the most successful Science Fiction based MMORPG, provides a lot of technical details to delve into which is only expanded as more technology is brought in. Science Fiction is interesting as the "How to" is theoretical, providing a massive amount of fun trying to put theories to all of the plausable technologies. Contemporary Realistic Worlds provide for a nice modern touch. Things ranging from police to criminal organizations always make for compelling scenarios that are at least remotely possible in the current setting of today. 13) Do you role-play in game? a) Yes <- b) No c) Sometimes 14) Does your in-game avatar represent you in real life, either in physical appearance, personality, conversation, or other actions? Why or why not? Nope, my characters (while having a sliver of my personality) are usually separate entities, allowing me to explore the behaviors of people that aren't me and how people respond to them. I'm a nice guy, but roleplaying a jerk allows me to explore that scenario in social interaction. The separation of person-and-character is one of the biggest things a Roleplayer must learn to do, otherwise you get people who become way too involved in what is going on at a personal level, reading into things far too strongly. 15) Do you play MMORPGs to avoid/cope with problems in real life (i.e. school procrastination, illness, marital problems, etc)? a) Yes b) No <- c) Sometimes d) Not sure 16) Do you believe that MMORPGs can serve an escapist function, that is, a coping mechanism for real life stress, boredom, etc? Why or why not? Yes, aren't all hobbies providing an avenue for escapism? 17) What do you believe is the future of MMORPGs? Please elaborate. "You should never really doubt what no one is ever really sure about." ~Gene Wilder We're seeing more and more MMORPGs develop and more companies fighting for competing market shares over World of Warcraft. I think WoW will dominate for the next to years as the expansion controls the market, and then we will see interest wane with people spreading. We will continue to see "WoW clones" with limited advancement in making an MMORPG that stands out gameplay wise. The formula for MMORPGs has been solidified where no one is willing break these established rule-types set in by Blizzard with the intent in stating that they are what made World of Warcraft the Juggernaut it is today.
  8. Grilled Carp: +5 to Control (?) for 30 minutes.
  9. Part of what the community needs is the math behind it. It'll take awhile to get it since we all know SE doesn't like to share, but that will help get people towards the right gear. For now, the detriment isn't shown well enough.
  10. Hmm.. I wonder if this is a good thing to be seeing in the long run.
  11. How difficult, namely because it's hard to find something that fits a character that the music wasn't designed for. Main Theme: "Symphony No. 94 in G Major, "The Surprise": Andante" Battle Theme: " " (Volume Warning) While Being Chased: "Concerto Grosso in G Minor, Op. 6: 8 "Christmas Concerto": II. Allegro" (Don't think it fits well enough.) While Sad/Lonely/Depressed: "Trois Gymnopédies: Gymnopédie No. 1: Lent Et Douloureux" (Mild) or " " (Major) While Getting Into Trouble: " " Romantic/Affectionate Theme: "Cavatina" Was my post a necro? Yeah, but I'd rather add to an existing thread than make a new one.
  12. D2010.10.14.0000 has been added. Patchnotes on the first post.
  13. It's a bit difficult to say. Part of the problem is just trying to understand the world that FFXIV is set in, along with the absolutely brutal crafting system that is always forcing it's way into my head, pushing off planning and things. I'm finding that my character is deviating from the original plan I had for him, which makes me feel a bit put off. Rather than being so much into study and research, he's been ICly working on general crafting and general combat (with focus on magical sides). I can't figure out what particular field of research he'd be interested in and what I want to try to do has been a bit difficult to work out because of his backstory. I keep setting gameplay goals which keep pushing Roleplaying out of the way, and while this is my problem, I find it frustrating because fellow LS members are managing to push higher, faster, stronger, broader into their PLs and Ranks. Maybe it's the power-gamer in me, but I'm just having trouble balancing between Roleplay and gameplay. ------- Freyar Shockaru has loosened up a bit. As far as relations inside the linkshell he's part of, a bit of a rivalry has flared up between Illias Naystar and himself. Others watching the two talk to each other have described them as "Brothers", though it is a bit funny considering how different they are physically and focus-wise. I've met a number of linkshell members too, though ICly my interaction is severely limited due to the times I play, and those gameplay goals that keep taking up my time. I'd like to sit down and work on some inter-character development. Outside of the linkshell, I've met a number of members from T.A.L.E. Good folks, though I know only one or two as much as a couple members of my linkshell. Much like everything else, I'd love to do more, I just don't have enough time for that AND a heavy RP slant.
  14. It is in fact very much on topic, since the botch or HQ seems to be considered scams. I strongly disagree with that and am concerned as a crafter that someone would be willing to put my name on a scammer list due to different personal opinions. However, I'll simply avoid trading anything else than gil with anyone I don't feel I can trust. Scamming goes both ways, and so does slandering. While I do believe HQ price hiking is unacceptable, I included all three results as a person can potentially feel cheated in all three scenarios. You may feel slandered, Asyria, but the wording was in an attempt to address considerations with each of the three results. Preventative work helps prevent these types of scenarios to begin with, which is better then waiting till after-the-fact.
  15. If only they could be completely disabled while you are playing solo.
  16. I personally completely disagree with the commissioned item "costing more" because of a high-quality result. If I pay you to make X and you screw it up by making it "high quality", then why the hell should I go back to you, eh? There is no extra work being done here. Either way, we're getting distracted. People are stealing materials and investment monies, that was what this was primarily about.
  17. I didn't notice the flare or anything the first time I looked. It's actually pretty good. I'll have to mess around with GIMP a bit.
  18. It was aimed at Asryia, you were QFT.
  19. A combination of a high resolution (or high render as in "double" in the config), maximum settings in texture, lighting, and shadow detail, and decently placed cameras.
  20. Asyria, in all fairness, if it's using your mats, not the crafter's, then the crafter is completely in the wrong to try to bring up the price for the product you commissioned them to make, if it's with their mats, they can feel free to charge what they want, that's not the issue at hand though, the issue is if they are utilizing your mats to make something you commissioned them to make, there is absolutely everything wrong with going back on a trade agreement and taking someone else's money and materials and then trying to make them pay more for you basically getting lucky while crafting. Consider it like this. You do an outstanding job at creating an item, someone will come back to you for custom. HQ results aren't just a random chance, they are directly effected by HOW a crafter does the synth and therefore it is inappropriate (in my eyes) to turn around and extort the situation for more gil. I'm not sure if a list is a good idea either.
  21. This is really meant as a general warning. I've been watching and listening in the various makets (primarily the Gridanian Ebon and Rosewood stalls) and have noticed a trend of people stealing cash and materials from others that are looking to get work done. Here's how it happens: [*]Party A seeks an Armorsmith to make a suit of chainmail. [*]Armorsmith responds, offers his services for a fee + material components. [*]Party A trades materials and gil to Armorsmith. [*]Armorsmith either finishes the job, botches it, or makes an HQ item.[/list:u] If the synth succeeds, the Armorsmith in the case of a scam simply states he will sell it himself to whoever pays his asking price via his Bazaar. If the synth fails, the Amorsmith makes no attempts to reconcile losses (though admittedly, there is no real unwritten "norm" for the community as of yet). If the synth generates an HQ result, the Armorsmith tries to extort additional fees for the quality of the item, or sells it via his Bazaar at his asking price. ------- Either way, a number of these are becoming problematic as the more unscrupulous are using the system to try and get away with materials and fees, or in some cases just the materials themselves. Here's what you can do to reduce losses due to theft like this: [*]Buy finished pieces in the market or bazaars. [*]Yes, it is a pain to buy from the Market Wards as they are now, but this is the absolutely safest way to get what you want.[/list:u] [*]Work with your linkshell, a reputable linkshell (in the case of the RPC and Besaid), or a trustworthy friend for specific synth attempts. [*]Make sure you spell out what should happen in the case of a synth failure to prevent any future disagreements on how to proceed when that happens. (Yes, when.. not if.)[/list:u][/list:u] I am currently un-aware of SE's position on the more seedy behaviors. While I am an EvE veteran, I don't think FFXIV is the kind of game to support this kind of vehavior.
  22. Just a note, it looks like someone has been attempting to break into my FTP. I may have to take it offline for a bit if this continues.
