Random character idea stewing in my head.
C'kayah Polaali replied to Kurt S.'s topic in RP Discussion
1-3. It's plausible, sure. Seekers are varied enough in lore that there's sufficient wiggle room to make an "in my sept of the X tribe" case for anything. I suspect that in most tribes the Nunh would get taken out by the females in the tribe (this has been known to happen in earthly lion prides) - if for nothing else than putting his own well being over the well being of the tribe/sept. But I'd say go for it if you want to have a Miqo'te that's got aspects of Elezen culture. You wouldn't be the first. 4. Yep. French surnames all the way down. 5. See the above. I don't do those filthy Elezen. -
Happy New Year, from all of us in your favorite crime syndicate!
-
How did I miss this thread? Tylwyth Narah started out in secret, but we've secured a charter from the Syndicate recognizing us as a legitimate import/export company in Thanalan. In that way, we definitely have a legitimate trading company front. It is, however, a very thin front. Hell, even Coatleque knows we're bent.

C'kayah's all together with his soul mate here. There's nothing special about Heavensturn, and those who think otherwise are fools.

Sure, but that's not the situation Liliro is talking about. It sounds like, if she asked "Mind if I burgle you?", you'd respond "You can try, but there are traps, etc etc". These are people who've initially agreed to it. Lil, what I'd recommend in this case is to push the boundaries a little bit. It's generally acknowledged good form to RP the action and let the other person RP the result, but this is getting pretty close to a guaranteed coup de grace. If Liliro isn't willing to kill the man for refusing to fill his bag, then you're justified in posting that you thwack the guy in the temple with the pommel of your dagger and knock his ass out.

Happy Holidays from the lovable criminals at Tylwyth Narah! We've taken a bit of a break to recharge our batteries and refresh our precious bodily fluids, and now we're back and ready to make trouble! In this update, I'd like to highlight our job board! A cheap knock-off of something the software industry stole from Toyota, our job board helps us find RP opportunities by setting out simple and concrete things that need to happen to progress arcs. It's a little like a bulletin board covered in 3x5 cards: A single card might say something like "Investigate Coatleque Crofte". If you log in and are looking for something to do, you might think "I'll try that. I see her over there!". You go spy on her, maybe you talk to her, and learn that she's secretly a Garlean agent who sacrifices baby Miqo'te on Saturdays. So you go put that on the card! Someone else comes along and sees it and thinks "Baby Miqo'te! The humanity!", and creates a card about getting her in trouble with the Sultansworn. Someone else comes along, sees that card, and thinks "That's right up my alley!" and trails her. They find some concrete evidence of her Garlean ancestry and turn her in! The card comes off, three people have had fun RP (if you include Coatleque), and one more corrupt Sultansworn ends up facing the gaols! And that's only one of the many cards we've got up on the board at any time. It's a non-stop RP opportunity fest, and it can be yours! But wait, there's more! We're currently facing aggression from an ally turned enemy, a threat from a rival organization, and the suspicious eye of the Sultansworn. Come join us and all these troubles can be yours as well! Now how much would you pay?

balmung LF "Dark"/Mature Themed RP or FC? x_X
C'kayah Polaali replied to Dia's topic in Chronicled Connections
Dark/mature themed FC, you say? Come talk to us. Tylwyth Narah is a Thanalan-based crime syndicate with growing influence throughout Eorzea. ICly we mainly focus on amassing power, and our organization primarily smuggles and robs. We're not moustache-twirling villains, but we are criminals. More Don Corleone, less Doctor Evil. OOCly we do a lot of RP with other groups, providing villains and foils for them, in addition to having our own RP. A bunch of us are coming back into the game after a break, so there's a lot of opportunity. We've got a private forum for coordinating plots, a house in the Goblet, and are experimenting with a kanban-style job board to make it easy to pick up RP jobs that need doing (i.e.: "Investigate Bob Dobbs"; "Make an example out of Coatleque Crofte"). We'd love to hear from you! -
To enjoy life to the fullest. To cherish the things you love, to do the things you enjoy, and to relentlessly prune away the things that make you unhappy. And hollandaise sauce. The last couple of weeks, life's been all about the hollandaise sauce.

I'm not necessarily targeting this response at either of you, this is more of a general statement about MMO communities as a whole (not just FFXIV), but I never understood this mentality. Why is it that most view the nail that sticks out deserves the hammer? I've seen this sort of mindset again and again and again over the years playing in games like WoW or TERA or even my brief stay in ArcheAge. The community (or individuals in said community) tend to make these little "edicts" about what is acceptable, and whether it's intentional or not it always creates this sort of air of judgement around those communities as if to say "if you do this/don't do this then you're not worth my RP." I don't think that's what Aya's saying at all. The lore is filled with people riding around en masse on chocobos, so someone riding "a" Sleipnir is as new and surprising lore-wise as a cowboy riding his trusty elephant into Dodge City. If that's not worthy of being looked at askance, I don't know what is!

The Haul: What did you get for Christmas?
C'kayah Polaali replied to Dat Oni's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
And amusingly, the other Christmas gift is the completion of my project at work (HBO GO for the FireTV), making it so that I don't have to work with Amazon and the FireTV folks ever again! Yay for the work thing, but also reading that you said 'jammies' made me gigglesnort. They're very snug -

Looking to rejoin community, wanting connections
C'kayah Polaali replied to E'irawen's topic in Chronicled Connections
You didn't mention why your previous characters made you unhappy, but if they were standard heroes, you might want to consider playing a criminal. There's a lot of fun in playing a foil - the RP opportunities are plentiful, especially if you're playing the foil in other people's arcs; it's fun to do things we don't normally do IRL; and you get a free "Ocean's 11" soundtrack that plays the whole time you're RPing. Check out Tylwyth Narah, if the crime thing sounds appealing. -
Discussion of "Polyamory: A Roleplaying Guide"
C'kayah Polaali replied to K'nahli's topic in RP Discussion
Sort of? It's sleazy, for sure, and it's obviously not okay if they're trying to force/pressure/trick people into doing sexual things with them. Late comment, but hey, it's Christmas! I think the main point here in what Faye is saying - not to put words in your mouth Faye - is it's not okay for people to force/pressure/trick people into doing anything, really. I recognize that it probably happens more around sex than it does around, say, coil, but it's not exclusive to sex and it's equally not okay anywhere. And just for me: I don't particularly have a problem with people exploiting genuine sexualities or practices. Maybe they're in the closet about something and this is their only outlet. Maybe they're just curious. Maybe they just want to get their rocks off. I don't know, and I don't care. So long as it's consensual, in my opinion, they're golden. Merry Christmas, everyone! -
Dammit Val! C fights for Kenthy Pennyfeather, himself, Tylwyth Narah, and his friends in that order. If asked, he will lie and say he only fights for himself.

Hey, if God is lazy, then God is lazy.

C'kayah's never been hugged by a Roegadyn. He's had every sort of negative experience (beaten, stabbed, thrown, etc) with them, but never hugged. Until now. Enjoy the fuzzy Miqo hug back, Steel, and Merry Christmas.

This is all rampant speculation based on in-game observations, but... We know Eorzea has seasons, but they're very mild compared to seasons on Earth. Our seasons are caused by the axial tilt of the Earth: You can see from this diagram that each hemisphere has summer when the sun's rays are closer to being overhead, and winter when they're furthest from it. You can also see why the seasons are swapped between the northern and southern hemispheres - the north has summer when the south has winter, and visa versa. The tilt is measured from the plane of the Earth's orbit around the sun. You can see that the Earth has a pretty decent tilt, enough to produce a pretty significant difference between summer and winter. If the tilt was greater, you'd see greater differences between the seasons. Now in Eorzea, on the other hand, we don't see any real distinctions between summer and winter. There's a light snow around Starlight, but *every* place gets that. Other than that, every season seems to be basically the same. Corthas is always cold, Thanalan is always hot, the Shroud is always temperate, and these don't really vary with the seasons. You can assume, then, that Hydaelyn's axial tilt is basically straight up and down, making the angle of Hydaelyn's sun's rays the same for any given spot on the surface all throughout the year. Now, you can imagine you're sitting on the planet, looking up at the sky. You're able to see a circular portion of the sky that's based on the longitude and latitude of the spot you're sitting at, and what time it is. As the planet spins, your visible circle spins with it, which is what lets you see different stars as the night progresses. Now, there are a couple of things that limit what you can and can't see. One of them is the hours of night. You simply can't see stars (except in extreme circumstances) while the sun is shining. The other is your latitude (which is why the night sky is different in the southern hemisphere). You're seeing, on any day, a strip of sky. As the year progresses, you can see different constellations, though. This is mainly a phase thing: As the Earth goes around the sun, you're seeing a different portion of the sky during the hours of darkness. The axial tilt of the Earth plays into this, too, because the days are shorter for winter and longer for summer. Longer night means more stars you can see. Since Hydaelyn's axial tilt is basically nil, the only thing that affects what stars you can see is the phase progression from the planet going around the sun: You can still see a different part of the sky during the night different times of the year. Now, I haven't really studied the sky in depth in Eorzea, but I haven't noticed a seasonal difference in the stars. The only thing we can deduce from this is that there's a strangely coincidental correlation between the length of the day and the year, which means that we're always seeing the same section of sky during the night. That's pretty long odds, but as they say, when you eliminate the impossible, what you have left, however improbable, must be the truth. But what explains this improbable coincidence? Clearly, the answer is magic.

RNG gods? How boring! Set up a mumble server and require all the players to do shots when their characters do! Last one talking on mumble wins! -
I never said he did! Why? Did Kage stab this year's victim? I got the implication when you said it's what was done with it and I said C didnt get a lalafell sized backstab u.u Well, metaphorically speaking, he did. But at the time it was more of a Miqo'te-sized backstab. I don't know if that was related to the ball, though... Trying to take credit for my backstabbing at the ball hmm.. ?;) :3 Not at all! Just discussing last year's ball, and the backstabbing therein. It's good to see the tradition has been upheld.

Traveling Realms in a Realm Reborn: Character Ports
C'kayah Polaali replied to Hiro's topic in Character Workshop
Because I'm sure to piss someone off by saying it, I'll prepend the caveat that I'm not making any value judgements about anyone else's RP. This is just me. That said, I never understood the "This character is the same one I played in Tera/Wow/Eve Online/Minecraft/Tetris" thing, and so I've never done it. I adore learning about the lore of a world, so I love making fresh characters that wholly inhabit it. For alts, I sometimes use elements of old characters (for instance, Meleia in EQ2 was a Freeport Chekist and spy for the Overlord; Gehmor in Star Trek Online was a Cardassian trained as an intelligence officer before the fall of Cardassia; Armistead Moreau is a Duskwight who lived in a large Clan and was employed as a spy before the Calamity devastated them), but that's about it. Names, cultures, backgrounds, etc, all get created whole cloth. -
Space industries and asteroid mining. Because maybe it would be a little easier to be excellent to one another if we weren't always coveting each other's resources at the end of rifles.

I almost think that watching how people respond to this is more interesting than the question itself. But anyways! To answer: C'kayah is a conjurer ICly, but I'd put his IC level as somewhere around 2 or 3. He's simply never had the desire to stick with the training long enough to do anything with it. Instead, he sticks with his DoW "abilities", instead. He's a damn fine archer, courtesy of growing up in the hunter's ton in his tribe. He's fair with a sword - he's gotten better in the last few years, mainly at the insistence of an old lover. He also doesn't believe in fighting fair, so he uses poisons liberally. His superpower, however, is his tongue. Once he started making connections with people and putting together organizations, he went from being a barely-making-it smuggler and thief to a fairly powerful crime figure. I like you!

We'll laugh at them, Kage, after we drink them under the table...
