Fighting Techniques -- Inspiration and referencing!
C'kayah Polaali replied to Berrod Armstrong's topic in RP Discussion
I've always loved the way Fritz Leiber wrote fight scenes, especially in the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser stories. That Leiber was a champion fencer, and used this knowledge in his writing. I used to fence classically, myself, so it appeals to me. On the rare occasions when C'kayah uses a sword, I'm wont to trot out this knowledge, though I'm sure it's really only good for a chuckle when I start emoting about holding the sword in carte, parrying in sixte and following with an immediate moulinet in prime... -
With abs like that, you can't regret too much. The biggest reason is because Kage still thinks that that caused the events of C's (near)death. When we all know it was Natalie's fault

Don't eat too much, though. You know what can happen...

The Bacchus Shots Competition is back! 1/22 @9pm
C'kayah Polaali replied to Cliodhna Eoghan's topic in Chronicled Events
Sadly I'm not going to be able to make this, either. I'm on the west coast, so it's pretty early in the day. Sign me up for the next one that's later at night, though! -
The Screenshot Thread [Tag Your Spoilers]
C'kayah Polaali replied to Zyrusticae's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Yes. That's exactly what I think of when I see that screenshot... -
One of C'kayah's characteristics is that he thinks of himself as the Beloved of Thal, because he's died a handful of times and been brought back every time. To me, he's always been a killable character - having a character who's completely invulnerable to harm, to me, destroys a great deal of the meaning of their story - and his habit of getting into dangerous situations makes this a very real possibility. In a world with any number of not-uncommon ways to raise the recently deceased, he's been brought back from them all. Most of the time, this makes sense. There were two occasions, however, where I allowed the course of things to change based on OOC objections: At the First Royal Ball of Ul'dah (back in March 2013), C'kayah was attacked by enemies. It was a pretty brutal attack, with a pretty high overkill factor. The RP story behind this would have been served really nicely with his death, so I decided to let him die. A friend of mine at the time got hugely upset OOCly at the idea of this, and I allowed myself to be badgered into letting C'kayah be saved. ICly it was on the borders of plausibility, because they brought help soon enough that I could see this happening. The next couple of months were pretty heartbreaking for C'kayah, and he lost everything he cared about. After a last shattering emotional blow, he decided enough was enough, and took poison. It was an interesting end to his story, and I was satisfied with the way it all played out. My plan was to do a server transfer name change (RMT name changes weren't a thing at the time) along with a fantastia and play him as a new character. As a postscript, I contacted a few people I'd played closely with to let them know what was happening. One took this extremely badly and again I allowed myself to be convinced to allow C'kayah to be saved, this time through some pretty serious story-breaking powergaming. In retrospect, I regretted both of these. In the first, the RP arc I was playing in was materially made lesser, and (in my opinion) stripped of a lot of its impact by my allowing C'kayah to be saved. The second was worse, however, because I basically had to go in with a tire iron and remodel C'kayah's emotions. It took a few months after this before I felt like he was his own character again, and I would have had more fun in that time developing the character I would have replaced him with.

Question about meeting new people and walk-up RP
C'kayah Polaali replied to Havoc Snow's topic in RP Discussion
Social skills are just that: skills. They can be learned. To some people they come early and easily, easily enough that they seem to simply be innate. To others, they don't. But that doesn't change the fact that they can still be learned. Others have pointed this out, but if your character is hard to approach and tends to just sit around drinking on his own (when he's around other people), other folks will have no reason to approach him. If you're playing him like this and you're not satisfied with the RP you're getting, part of it might be simply because he's not the character for you. Not if you want to enjoy yourself. Nebbs pointed this out, but it can be really fun to play a character that's desperately unlike you. That's what I did with C'kayah, and he's easily become my favorite RP character I've ever played. -
Congratulations! I'm in a similar boat - I'm adopted, so my daughters were the first people I've ever seen with my dna. They're fantastic, and I'm sure your son will be, too!

Is it the part that people don't think Lalas are sexy? Or maybe because people don't think it appropriate to crossbreed Lalas with other races? Came back to this thread to read up just as the whole Lala conversation started up. If I were a anime, I'd have that giant awkward tear floating by my face as I back away slowly. I don't believe a Roe penis would be the size of a whole lala.. but probably a lala arm or leg. Which then makes my uterus cringe for a poor lala female since that's basically imagining myself getting porked with my own arm. That moment you imagine something you can't unimagine. Sorry, but my own personal Roegadyn headcanon is now informed by the gorilla's infamous 1.5" penis.

At the same time, Lalafell hips are proportionately very wide, and their torsos are very long. There's plenty of room for a bigger-than-proportional uterus, and - assuming their wide hips reflect wide pelvises - them to birth children with normal sized heads.

Yep, it's L'kenthi...

Let's keep this going! Nako'li not only has fantastic hair, but he manages a great David Bowie-esque catboy expression that always makes me giggle (in a good way). -
Sounds good! Here's a current list of Tylwyth Narah officers. Feel free to hit us up in game: C'kayah Polaali L'kenthi Rarahn N'varrel Tia Lathu'a Jhiyati Tajih Bajhiri Rinh'sae Nelhah What's your character's name? I'll keep an eye open for him.

Name: C'kayah Polaali World: Balmung Character main class/job/role (Optional): White Mage (or crime lord, if we're talking ICly) Cards (recommended): The Heirophant Reason for Card choice (recommended): C'kayah is trying to change the shape of the underworld in Ul'dah, and he's doing so mainly by hewing to a semimystical vision. He's gathered other criminals around him, and he's welded them into a single entity by interpreting this vision for them, convincing them it's the right thing to do. Screenshots! Favorite alcoholic beverages?
C'kayah Polaali replied to Delilah Scythewood's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I used to drink a lot of beer, but I've mostly given it up in an attempt to cut back on carbs. I'm pretty much a cocktail man, these days: Sea Breeze (my go-to cocktail) Moscow Mule Rye Old Fashioned Whiskey Sour (with rye - God, I love rye!) Any good whiskey and water, or whiskey and soda Grog, when I'm sailing (rum and lime juice) Tequila sunrise Mai Tai (if I'm in Hawai'i) Gin and tonics, if the gin is good Margarita (on the rocks, of course - none of that frozen crap!) Any number of champagne cocktails (C. cocktail, mimosa, etc) And the list goes on and on and on... I also relish a nice watered red wine (strong red wine with water or soda water, Argentine-style), muscats, sweet ports, and ice wine. -

I'll readily admit that the word "clan" isn't in lore. I'm just using it to refer to these groupings of families, as a way of keeping them distinct from Seeker tribes. However! I don't see why Keepers being matriarchal or "groups of families" organized would imply monogamy. Keeper males are rare (I can't remember where, but I read something where the ratio was somewhere between 1:5 and 1:20), so a purely monogamous Keeper family would have to have a ton of children to make up for all the females who wouldn't be having kids at all. An easy alternative that springs to mind might be that a clan (i.e.: a group of families) would be 3-4 families of females and their offspring, with one or two males associated. It could either be polygynous (a number of females all share one male as their group husband), or polygamous (where each female has one or more males).

Yeah, you see that all the time in real life. "You're marrying a yankee? What sort of Southerner are you?" I joke with a lot of friends about this but... Asians are extremely racist. Especially to each other. My parents -hated- that I used to watch a lot of Japanese competitive cooking shows or even showed a small interest in Mahjong. It became a day's long lecture once. As Taiwanese, some mainlanders give me the stink eye. One of the first things Chinese people tend to ask is "Mainland? Taiwan? Hong Kong?" Sure, but you also see a lot of Asians in relationships with non-Asians. It's not necessarily common, but it's certainly not unheard of. I think that's the same sort of thing you see in Eorzea with cross-"species" relationships. Not common, but not unheard of, either. Agreed! While the size difference between a Roegadyn and a Lalafell is a little more extreme than the size difference between Peter Dinklage and his wife, it's in the same ballpark. And the Dinklage-Schmidts seem to do juuuuust fine!

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
C'kayah Polaali replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
And clearly, as a White Mage, if I see some DD repeatedly grabbing aggro, why they must be so good they don't need healing, too! Time for Cleric Stance and applying some sweet, sweet* DPS! *We're talking 4 or more DPS, baby! -

There's nothing that really seems to indicate that Keepers are monogamous, though. Keeper males are supposed to be rare, so why wouldn't they be used to being passed around to other females (case #1 there), while cases #2 and #3 the Keeper female isn't seeing anything too different than what they're used to. The large cultural differences in my mind are the nocturnal/diurnal split between the two. A Seeker man who joins a Keeper clan to be with the woman he loves would mostly be giving up his beloved sun, while a Keeper woman who joined a Seeker tribe to be with the man she loved would likewise lose the night that she is used to.
