  1. But this is wrong. There is a finite amount of gil you can attain through normal play. Over a certain amount of play hours you will have X amount of gil, guaranteed. Thus, by cutting all existing players' gil by 90%, it takes a LOT less time for someone to catch up with that amount through normal play. If someone has 1 million gil and keeps it, it will take MUCH longer for someone new to the game to catch up to that amount, whereas 100k is a considerably more manageable number. Obviously, if you don't play the game at all, your wealth inequality will remain exactly the same, but that's not the scenario I'm concerned about here. I don't care about how poor people were in 1.0 versus the rich folks, I care about how much purchasing power rich legacy players would have versus new players just starting out. Or at least, that's the concern that most people who have problems with the legacy servers seem to have (besides the level differences, naturally). Over time the gil income from natural play should even out the field. Allowing legacy players to keep their full gil allotment would make it take much, much longer for this to even out. That's all there is to it.
  2. Here's one that I really love that doesn't seem to get anywhere near the attention it deserves: Also, this one is completely obligatory in any Final Fantasy music cover/remix thread, and I am flabbergasted that it has not already been posted:
  3. I want that Coerthas music. Sooo gooooood.
  4. Yeah, that's what I missed. Shame about the tiny sample size, but I guess that's to be expected considering the timing and the size of the RP community. I'm speaking from personal experience. I used to try to choose the less-common looks in the past, but eventually I realized that I was hampering my own experience just for the sake of "being different", so now I just don't bother unless it's something I would have picked anyway. Of course, if you would have chosen the less-common look anyway, then you're good, but I'd be very wary of looking over something you like just because lots of other people happen to like it as well. (What's that saying - "Great minds think alike"?)
  5. My bad. I thought I read that they were slashing it by 10%, not to 10%. That makes concerns over rolling on a legacy server even more irrelevant...
  6. Have to say, I always feel like big, sweeping, epic tracks are completely out-of-place for describing characters. Unless your character is actually a walking god (and if they are, you are a terrible roleplayer), there is simply no way they can live up to such incredible grandiosity. That being said, I could not resist the temptation to post this: No, that's not a serious response! It just feels like every time "music" and "catgirls" are mentioned, this track has to be posted. For a serious response, I'd have to go with something like this:
  7. Not gonna lie, this whole thing is making me sick. SE should drop the "non-legacy" idea entirely. It's not like there's going to be any shortage of new players to fill in every server, and it's not even like every legacy player is a level 50 carting around millions of gil. If they're really that concerned about the economy or somesuch they can just cut everyone's current gil by 90% or whatever value would make people happiest, but splitting the community like this is... frankly, sickening. It shouldn't be happening. Not just here, mind you, but across the entire community there's talk of people splitting up and going one way or the other, and that should never happen. There are so many games out there that never do an economy reset or open new servers, so why is it such a big deal here? It's incredibly frustrating. I feel like this whole "legacy vs. non-legacy" junk is going to do a lot more harm than good.
  8. Wait, how do you know this? Is there another survey or something that I'm not aware of? (Also something being less popular is a really poor reason to prefer something, just sayin')
  9. Of course I'll be sticking with Balmung. Besides the fact that my legacy characters are there, it really doesn't make sense to me to split up an already-small RP community. If there are players who only care about gameplay first and really have issues with legacy servers, sure, they can go to Gilgamesh, but they relinquish their right to complain about a lack of RP activity when they do so.
  10. My Miqo'te, T'ranu Ihka. She's not going to be a gladiator for phase 4, and thank goodness for that - soloing as one is a real pain in the ass.
  11. The Good (positives) [*]Delicious graphics. Mmmm. Tasty! The animations in particular are amazingly well-done. I have seen few games, period, that can match it in this area, much less other MMOs. [*]Sooo much character customization to be done. I don't just mean in the visual sense, but of course the mechanical sense as well. LOTS of ability combinations that can be done. [*]Crafting and gathering are actually activities instead of pure busywork (as they are in so many other MMOs). [*]The music, in combination with the graphics, really helps to sell the world. Love the atmosphere. [*]The story is quite impressive. The cinematics are very well-done. It's actually a good hook to level, except...[/list:u] The Bad (negatives) [*]The crafting. OHMYGOD, THE CRAFTING. Needing rank 20+ materials to complete rank 10 crafts, many of which are from completely different professions. The horrible RNG, too, which often makes it feel like you have little agency in the completion of a craft (which, well, is the opposite of what you'd expect a system like this to do). [*]Inventory management. Who decided that EQUIPPED ITEMS should still take up space in the inventory?! Why do I only have 80 slots when I have to deal with FOOD INGREDIENTS dropped by pretty much any single mob in addition to tiny, TINY stack size caps (lol 12 ore per stack)? WHY DO I HAVE TO UNEQUIP ITEMS TO REPAIR!? [*]REPAIR MUST DIE. MUST DIE NOW. OMFG, I HATE YOU ITEM DURABILITY WTF DO YOU DO THIS TO ME WHY WHY WHY?! (Re: I hate this "feature" and wish it would die in a fire. To ashes. And then burn the ashes into nothingness. It should NEVER HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT OF DAY! RRAAAAARRRRGH! ...Also, this is why I quit.) [*]Wtf is with the anima regen? One teleport per day, really? So you guys WANT me to walk EVERYWHERE? I guess you decided repairing wasn't enough of a ridiculous timesink as it is! [*]The UI. I don't even have to say anything more than this. The badness of the UI is self-evident.[/list:u] The Not-So-Ugly (thoughts, hopes, neutrality, etc.) [*]The market system is passable with the renaming of the wards. Or rather, tolerable. It's still pretty far from ideal. [*]Guildleves... meh. They add some variety, but they're no replacement for proper quests with proper story. Also, the cooldown and low daily limit... [*]Physical character customization - no body modification other than height and, for only two races, breast size. I'm spoiled from Aion and Champions Online... [*]Need more quests! The ones that are there (actual story ones, I mean) are very good, but there's simply not nearly enough of them. More! More! MORE![/list:u]
  12. IT MATTERS. STOP WEARING GEAR MADE FOR SOMEONE TEN OR TWENTY+ RANKS HIGHER THAN YOU! YOUR POCKETBOOK WILL THANK YOU! (And it'll stop considering committing suicide, if it hasn't already. Poor thing. I don't even wanna know how you guys pay for repairs...)
  13. So, I've been noticing a pattern in my crafts as of late. Squeenix's faq states thusly: This is hugely important. I have found that the same holds true of failure rates. That is to say, if you succeed several times in a row your chances are VERY HIGH that your next actions will succeed. Likewise, if you fail several times in a row you are extremely likely to fail your next actions. Thus, my new strategy is: At the beginning of every craft, I will make only standard synthesis attempts, and only on white orbs. After I have succeeded at least three times in a row, only then will I start using bold synths - however, in the case of high-rank and difficult crafts, it is inadvisable to ever switch out of standard synthesis. It is also unlikely that you will be able to succeed several times in a row. In those instances you can only keep attempting on whites and pray for success. For crafts that are actually around your level, however, using this method can ensure an extremely high-quality end product.
  14. The poor reviews keep piling on... http://www.gametrailers.com/video/revie ... asy/705893
  15. It'll help immensely when the market wards are actually navigable. It'll help even more when we can actually search the market wards (*crosses fingers*)...
  16. Just because I found this hilarious: APB: 6.5 FFXIV: 4.0 ...For the record, I agree with this assessment. Oddly enough, in both cases, I am somewhat willing to overlook the flaws because I find something about it engaging (the customization in the former and the atmosphere in the latter). That being said, there is only room for one MMO in my life atm and chances are FFXIV is going to lose out... Edit: Of interest may be this post-launch Aion review: Assault on Balaurea vs. Launch review Showing how much a game can improve over time. If Squeenix takes the feedback seriously, hopefully they will have similar results.
  17. Don't worry about your first guildleves. When you start doing rank 10s your income literally goes up by an order of magnitude. Seriously.
  18. Not to mention the real-world has a high tendancy for repetition. In fact Limsa Lominsa appears to have far more topographical variety than any real-world island plain I know of...
  19. I love Subligars! I specifically went out and got one, with the harness for the top armor, for Chveya before beta ended. I even had thigh-high boots to run around in. You mean like this?
  20. I'm with Rreeth on this one. Colors =/= actions. However, I have a different take on things: Gold - Highest chance of success. Has a chance to provide extra quality on success. Less failure damage. White - Standard, normal, boring ol' humdrum yeah yeah etc. Red - High chance of failure - however, successes grant a high bonus to progress. Failure, however, is devastating with this one as it not only hurts durability but also greatly increases instability (sometimes on SUCCESS, too). Rapid colors - I never bother with this one. I prefer to play it safe. Also, in my experience: Standard is the best action all-around - unless you start failing frequently. The durability losses with this one are ginormous. Rapid is incredibly risky - every failure has a high chance of causing instability. However, the durability loss is also the lowest. It's a trade-off; standard for high durability but low instability losses, rapid for high instability but low durability losses Bold just sucks. In my experience it has an extremely high failure rate and even doesn't increase quality that much when it succeeds. Only do it if you're at 80%+ and still have a huge chunk of durability remaining.
  21. Well, in any case, whatever the reason for the low chat limit now it clearly needs to change, no question there. I really have no idea why it'd be lower than it was in FFXI other than simple lack of hindsight.
  22. It's very obviously a chatbox made with Japanese players in mind. Y'know, with the devs being Japanese and Japanese requiring fewer characters to form coherent sentences overall (with each symbol being either a noun or a syllable). It's rather unfortunate for us, but hopefully they will change it for the foreign playerbase. And hopefully they'll do the same with the horrible mouse lag.
  23. Please. I have been repeatedly insulted with some of the most basic and obvious "answers" that could possibly be formed, as though I could not possibly know any better. It gets to me when people assume I am incompetent or failed to consider the blindingly obvious (though I may well do this on occasion, this is obviously not one of those times). It would be nice if people could at least assume (yes, I know, assumptions make us...) that I have a basic working knowledge of the game mechanics that I happen to be criticizing. Telling me "you're doing it wrong" when, no, I am in fact not doing anything wrong is just an obvious blow to the face. I will shoot down such answers because they're not answers at all! (And for the record, I do not expect anything to fall into my lap. I do, however, expect to at least be able to do basic, basic crafts without everything failing and ultimately breaking 9/10 times... even 1/2 the time would be acceptable.)
  24. Ugh, okay, this is getting silly. Let me get this straight. I've already linked two threads where people tried it AND DIDN'T GET ANYTHING. If you try to make something and the recipe does not exist within the game you simply can't make it, period. The game will tell you this explicitly, outright. The recipe does not exist within the game. Seriously, try it. Now, maybe the recipe is WRONG, maybe the recipe does exist but uses different ingredients. I don't know. All I know is that nobody knows it yet and nobody ever discovered such a recipe throughout the entirety of closed beta (and seriously, it is NOT for a lack of trying), so the conclusion I reach is that it simply does not exist at this current point in time. Prove me wrong. Go ahead. I'll be happy if you can. Just stop with these disingenuous assertions, would you? (And all the helpful information in the post is completely ruined by your sarcastic attempt to parody me, intentional or not. If you can't be courteous to me don't expect me to react very kindly.)
