Well-stated. I wish I could say it as nicely as you do (but I can't, so I didn't say anything at all). However, I also have to add that it really helps if people actually read the thread. The whole thing about ERP was a complete non-sequitur from where the thread actually was. I don't understand why people needed to take offense to something that wasn't even happening in that thread and is only tangentially, in some roundabout way, related to it in the first place. If everyone just stuck with the topic (i.e. talking about Miqo'te from a purely biological perspective), things would've been hunky-dory. But, you know what? There's someone who really should be making the apology, and it's not the OP...

Miqo’te Mating Strategies Explored: a biologist’s point of view
Zyrusticae replied to Myxie Tryxle's topic in Lore Discussion
Edit: You know what? Nevermind. This thread has been poisoned enough already. I have nothing else to contribute, so I'm bowing out (for now). -
male Keepers of the Moon possessive spelling
Zyrusticae replied to speitzer's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Yeah, I'd prefer to just go with the extra apostrophe. T'ranu's greataxe, for example. I mean, it looks weird, but that's just the way it is, and doing it any other way is just too damn confusing. -

As well she better be, seeing as how she killed two of your friends and nearly removed your arm in the process. Bitch got what was comin' to her. T'ranu's Cobalt Greataxe: Sheesh, what was she, a noble or something? This thing alone must have cost the equivalent of two wagons' worth of expensive cargo. No wonder she cut so cleanly through your comrades' armor. Selling this thing off might help to make up for the difference. At least a little bit... Well-Seasoned Beef Jerky: This chick sure liked her dried, smoked meat. Too bad she won't get to eat another bite. Provides increased in-combat HP regen. Well-Used Bow (with quiver and arrows): Why's a warrior got something like this on her? It looks incredibly old, too. It's surprising it's still functional. Must be an old keepsake or something, and she's too dead to tell you about it. Maybe you'll hang it on your wall or something, assuming you're that kind of evil (and who knows - you did kill her, after all.). Illustrated Guide to Eorzean Flora and Fauna: In the unlikely event you actually possess the ability to read (you monster), you realize this lady fancied herself something of an explorer. Surprising, considering she seemed much more like some kind of bloodthirsty barbarian when she was alive. Vendor trash.

I like this thread. I should also mention that the Sultan is not only a woman, but a midget, too. Oh, I'm sorry, I mean 'vertically challenged'... huehuehuehuehue. I'll just leave these here:

Miqo’te Mating Strategies Explored: a biologist’s point of view
Zyrusticae replied to Myxie Tryxle's topic in Lore Discussion
You've opened this can of worms, so you're going to have to deal with it. It's actually a combination of both. How you react to and process certain situations is largely determined by a combination of past experiences and your own genetic predispositions that move you towards certain conclusions. For example: some people who suffer traumatic childhood experiences become killers as adults; other people, for whatever reason, do not. You simply cannot divorce nature from nurture as that is oversimplifying the facts of the matter. Experience, or nurture, whichever, is most likely the more important of the two, I will note. People who have a predisposition towards becoming murderers and/or serial killers are actually perfectly capable of living a healthy and productive life, provided that the environment they were born and raised in wasn't a destructive one (and this is one reason I am not a proponent of the current punishment-justice system, but I digress). However, that predisposition is always there, and it still manifests itself in some pretty interesting ways - for example, the aforementioned potential killers will display a noticeable lack of empathy towards other human beings, even when they are behaving quite amiably. This means that, if, for example, your character was born in an environment that was harsh, unforgiving, and heavy with violence, they are not necessarily guaranteed to reciprocate with more violence. They might simply withdraw. They might give up. They might defend themselves, but only against aggressors. Or, indeed, they may become terrifying, remorseless killers. That all depends on many things. It's never a clear-cut "this happened, therefore X character is going to become this". You can draw up a chain of events, but once you change the foundation, that chain is unlikely to apply to another. Annnd that's that. I hope this was informative to someone. -
Maybe a bit off-topic, but my first thought upon reading the thread title was "wait, people will actually RP soliloquies in taverns? That... is interesting." But of course the contents were for a Skype channel, heh. But now I wonder if I should do a soliloquy in a tavern and see what happens...

I haven't read through the entire thread (great thread, btw), but this caught my eye. Much of the "squick" factor with relation to incestuous relationships has to do with physical proximity over an extended period of time, particularly during the formative years. You will get a similar "squick" reaction from two adopted children who are completely unrelated physically, for example. Meanwhile, a brother and sister who are directly descended from the same parents but haven't ever met each other before they hit puberty will have no problem getting it on (hence the portrayal of Luke and Leia kissing in Star Wars is actually quite accurate). I have no idea how this works with regard to Miqo'te due to a lack of knowledge about their particular living arrangements, but I assume the constant rotation of Nunh helps to quell this effect.

Characters in media that influence/are similar to your character!
Zyrusticae replied to Orlog's topic in RP Discussion
Sadly, my characters are built the way they are specifically because of a lack of characters of their particular archetype. I mean, how many hyperactive, yet pragmatic cute bruisers (with a dash of petite pride) are there in fiction, exactly? (Hint: There are none) Actually, pragmatism in general is rather in short supply these days, especially when it comes to female characters. This is something of a pet peeve of mine, even. The biggest example, female warriors - the practical thing to do is wear armor that deflects blows away from your vitals, to cut your hair short or tie it down well, and to train your body to the extent that you are much more of your weight in muscle than in fat. Yet how many female warriors exhibit any of these traits, much less all of them? And then there are the personalities that are often written into these characters. Do they even have any? Heh. Heh-heh. The less said about that, the better. Hence, characters like T'ranu are a product of my frustration with the way the media (and even other players) generally portray women who go into battle. However, at the same time, I will admit that some of it is simply an idealization of myself (her hair, skin, and eye color are exactly the same as mine). I suppose I should mention characters that do have an influence on mine, to some extent. Here goes: -
What a trip down memory lane. I remember the frustration of being destroyed by what seemed to be ordinary monsters (monster strength was all over the place). I remember the market wards and attempting to buy a new axe, and finding the task to be utterly impossible (and a chore even after they added category-specific wards). I remember trying to build that axe for myself afterwards, and finding the crafting to be surprisingly fun (if frustratingly luck-based and irritatingly obtuse). Most of all, though, I remember the collective frustration of hundreds of thousands of players and the internet shitstorm that followed. Man, what a time to live! Haha. Truly, it was the sign of the end times for Square Enix, or at least, it would have been if they hadn't managed to turn things around as well as they have. I took a couple pictures when I last logged in to see Dalamud falling, but aside from the high-res textures, 1.0 really doesn't hold up very well next to ARR:
-
I really hope it doesn't take long for the appearance/vanity slots to be added. It'd be a damn shame for the lower-level armors to not be seen past their level range. There's a lot of good outfits in this game that deserve to be shown off.
-
T'ranu's always been approximately 5' tall, but since I didn't have a frame of reference I just put it all the way to the bottom, this inadvertently making her 4'8" tall. I don't plan to rectify this for launch.
-
Oh hey, so this thread actually exists. I shall now proceed to flood you with screenshots. My apologies.
-
It's easy to stand out when everyone else is pale-skinned with blonde hair... I love the teleport pose. Annnd some straight shots for good measure.
-
Why, thank you! That's now five people who have voiced their approval of T'ranu (three in this thread, one in a PM, one through IM). Very encouraging. Here's some of her many facial expressions: Edit: Now in scale armor!

100 Questions to Ask About Your Role-Playing Character
Zyrusticae replied to Vash's topic in Character Workshop
Five thousand words. No one will read this entire thing. Prove me wrong, why don't you? -
Actually, there's an easy answer for this - gil are the material components for the teleport spell. The further you need to teleport, the more gil you need to successfully make the transfer. It could also handily explain why gil is valuable in the first place - it's not just shiny pieces of metal, they also have a practical use.

From I'm disappointed that it's just 1 week, but watcha gonna do?

Class/city based start, 50/50 opinion so far
Zyrusticae replied to Niteshade_Rune's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Don't your story quests require you to stick around your starting area for the first 20 levels, as well? Kind of limiting, that. (This is why I went Ul'dah for Phase 3 - since I'll be starting with Limsa, I wouldn't get to see any of that story content otherwise.) -
It's time for some excessively high contrast! (also T'ranu)
-
It also depends entirely on imagination (which is also true of #2 on your list), completely ignoring the medium that is the actual game. Personally, I have a hard time with this as you may as well be playing a MUD if you go this route, but on the other hand it's not necessarily fair if you just have a ton more playtime than someone else and just win by default, right? But this is why I don't bother with RPing PvP. Too many headaches involved, and oftentimes egos get in the way of an interesting result as well.
-
Thanks. I'll accept the compliment. Have some more:
-
This thread just made me realize that, due to the limitations of the character creator, pretty much everyone in the same clan in the FFXIV world looks like they could be related, if not in the same family tree.
-
The whole thing is just stupid. Is ARR a new game or not? If not, then leave everyone's characters untouched and forget about the non-legacy crap. If it IS, then nobody should be keeping anything from 1.0, period. As it is, the community's getting split up and for what? For nothing worthwhile as far as I can tell. It's all cow patties from where I stand.

Oh, I missed the post about the "currency re-denomination". You're right, that actually changes nothing. What I THOUGHT was happening was that all old players would have their current gil allotment reduced to 1/10 of what they were and that gil faucets would not change. This feels incredibly pointless now. They should be cutting the gil amounts of everyone to 1/100 or something instead...
