[NSFW] RP Discussion: Bad words said IC, for it or against it?
Oli! replied to Avira's topic in RP Discussion
Yeah, I more posted that tidbit for fun. This second bit brings up something important though, which is that oftentimes people confuse phrases for words. Some words and their meanings are more than old enough to be used in certain settings. However, certain phrases that use them may not be. ...But just for fun, let's look at "Pop a cap." It's likely too modern by linguistic standards. I looked it up out of curiosity, and although it does have a few proto-uses according to this thread on the English section of Stackexchange, "pop a cap" in the stated usage can be pinned down to the 2000s. I've only seen Swive offered as an alternative. The game gives us some other stuff like "Thal's Balls" and what-not, but those don't strictly mean "Fuck," or work in place of any of its derivative uses. "Thal's Balls" would more directly translate to something like "God Damn It," and something like Whoreson would translate to "Son of a Bitch" (or more directly, Son of a Whore). -

I couldn't find any earlier, but now that I can, have some more precise dates for "Whore." The earliest seems to be a rendition of the Old Testament from 1275. -

I decided to look up Cunt in that dictionary series I mentioned earlier because I'm basically two years old. On page 230 of the Second Volume, the earliest usage of "Cunt" is cited as 1383. We also get "Cunt-Pensioner," defined as "A male keep ; one who lives by the prostitution of a wife, a mistress, a daughter, or any other female connection," and "Cunt-Struck," defined as "Enamoured of women : who may, in turn, be either COCK-SMITTEN or PRICK-STRUCK" I might be having too much fun searching for curse words in obscure dictionaries. I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite thread on the citadel. -

It's worth noting that Swive is contemporary with Fuck. The 1907 Slang and Its Analogues, Past and Present, Volume 7 has the earliest citation of Swive (on page 52) being 1383, which roughly lines up with what we found out about Fuck earlier. If we go back to the idea of what we type being turned into "Eorzean" when we press enter, then Fuck and Swive either end up being the same word, or two contemporary words that mean the same thing, so it really comes down to personal flavoring; although one could make the argument that since one appears in the game and the other doesn't, then that one has more of a backing, the argument that the reason why the other does not appear is because it is still considered in poor taste in current society could also be made. It's interesting to note that by the time Slang and Its Analogues, Past and Present, Volume 3 is published in 1893, we already have (from pages 80 to 81) "Fuck," "Fuckable," "Fucker," "Fuck-finger," "Fuck-fist," "Fuck-hole," "Fucking," (with the oldest citation being 1568, curiously), "Fuckish," "Fuckster," and "Fuckstress." I'm sure that's plenty more about that word than anyone really wanted to know. If they mean actual Early-Modern English, that's still pretty dated, as that variation of English was in practice from roughly the 1400s to the 1600s, which would still place it as being Really Old. In a university research project over the summer, myself and about seven or eight other people worked towards making a program that found and corrected missing letters or variant EME spellings, and perhaps surprisingly, out of the thousands of words from various texts that we went through daily for 40 days, not once did we come across "fuck," "swive," or "shit." Since we already know that those words existed during that time, even in print, it's likely that they were still seen as relatively obscene in that time, since they weren't being printed all over the place. Of course, this example is anecdotal in terms of presentation, but there doesn't seem to be an abundance of citations for use of these words anywhere else either. -

There's no real way to know whether or not there is a word that represents such things, because we aren't provided with a glossary or complete Eorzean language for people to use. As a result, this isn't really anything that can be argued on any objective grounds. All we have are people's personal flavor preferences; this is why I'm going on a historical basis, because any sort of argument that boils down to "I like these words because they sound better" isn't really going to go anywhere constructive, and will eventually become circular if people are set in their ways. I can't argue against the Terms of Service. It's generally accepted in most RP communities that if you're going to curse like a sailor, you take your mutes / bans like a champ and move on. Light versus Heavy is also a subjective viewpoint; some people view Light v. Heavy as a measure of how much time one spends roleplaying. Others view it by how developed one's character is. Others view it as how much they stick to the lore, how many things their characters have done, how many events they've been to, how many characters they have or roleplay, and many, many other things. Some people might even use Light v. Heavy to determine the type or quality of the language that they or others use. So even then, we can't use that as a measure for what words seem more appropriate than others. As someone who (I guess?) considers themselves a "Heavy" roleplayer, even though I don't use these words myself (mainly because my characters don't curse), I won't really care if someone else does. -

Oli! replied to Avira's topic in RP Discussion
Yes, this is part of the argument. "Cunt" is believed to be obscene at least by Shakespeare's time. "Fuck" has been used sexually since at least 1310. "Whoreson," "Whoremonger," and other such things, are common insults in Shakespeare's plays. "Fuck" has been an adjective / intensifier grammatically since 1528 (and was still used as a descriptor of sorts in the 1310 example). Even the first usage of "I don't give a fuck" is older than the insulting use of "lap dog," surfacing in 1790 and beating it by 160 years. These words, and their "modern" usages, have been around for a while. -

This is something I addressed in my latter paragraphs; if we were to really follow this thought out, people in this setting aren't even speaking our language. The words that we use are not particularly "modern," and as I stated, would have found purchase in the rough real-life historical period of the setting in which we play. What has differed between then and now is sentence structure and (sometimes) meaning. Words, however, are older than we think. -

"Fuck" has been used since at least 1475. Under Etymology, a mention from the year 1310 is also present. I can't find a definitive year for "Whore," but it has been used by Shakespeare, placing it at least between 1590 and 1613, but it is likely much older than that. "Cunt" is older than both, from 1325 (or older; further on down the page, there's a case for it being used in the year 1230). By contrast, "Lap Dog" is in fact younger than all of these (approx. 1640), and is predicted to not have had its current meaning until 1950. "Bloody" as a swear word is also on the younger side, hovering around 1676, and you can't have "Bloody Hell" without it. Words like what people use are what people would have used back then. The problem is that modern literature uses one's suspension of belief to trick us into believing that some words are more period appropriate than others, even though this is not the case in history. If anything is contributing to the idea of people's speech seeming "too modern," it is likely the grammatical structure used, rather than any word in particular. Honestly, if we wanted to go with full-on accuracy anyway, people in Eorzea wouldn't even be speaking English, they'd be speaking whatever common language your Enter key translates into when you press it and your character speaks in the setting. So you can honestly just assume that they're using [contemporary language-appropriate swear word] whenever you type "Fuck" and press enter. Might also want to slap a NSFW tag on this thread. -
Can't we just make a new thread for further speculation? The OP already stated earlier on that they're uncomfortable with this going any further in a thread that they created to ask a specific question. There's no reason why more posting can't be done in a thread made specifically for this discussion, if the OP doesn't want it talked about in their thread anymore.

This is actually half the job of the Arcanists' Guild, so it would be very plausible.

[Balmung] Looking for local Lorewalkers/Historians/ETC
Oli! replied to Ozma's topic in Chronicled Connections
Thanks Oli that definitely does sound like a very attractive offer. I'll definitely be on the lookout for Oliwat 7 hours later (When I'm back home after work). I might not be on until the end of the week because I'm mostly messing about in Fallout 4 at the moment, but feel free to keep an eye out around Saturday or so! -

Oliwat would he happy to meet her, and is likely easy to find. He and his (now-missing) family were a group of travelling researchers and explorers, whose entire trade revolved around the publishing of an atlas and traveler's guide / encyclopedia called The Rattlepack Guide to Lands Far and Wide. The last issue was published some fifteen-odd years ago, so it's quite outdated, but Oliwat is (supposedly) working on a new one. Adventuring with him might be a good way to get a lay of the land. -
Regardless of whether or not it's possible, I'd consider it to be one of those Occam's Razor things. If the point of it is to just have an old character you once played available to play again, there's a simpler way to achieve that: making the character again within the setting.

It's because unless you're playing a tank class, you can't equip various pieces of gear that you would otherwise have to wear in order to complete the look, unless you were playing 1.0 and saved a piece of gear from that. Most people haven't. So for those that want to, say, wear metal gauntlets and boots without being a Tank Class, this is your only chance. And what a shitty chance it is.

According to the picture present on the Mog Station, they show through just fine.

I'm actually quite upset that both this and Yda's set are full-body, while Papalymo's can be mixed and matched. I'm double angry that these are gender-locked, because I would have immediately dropped money to get metal gauntlets on a MNK. I guess someday my dreams will come true.

Oh I am on Windows 7. All updates done. Have rebooted. So my version of explorer should be up to date even if I use chrome It's Capoute (quebec slang for broken, dead, un-repaireable and its a sad sad day) hehe I googled the error code, and apparently some people with the problem have had success by deleting the files that the launcher directory points to so that they can re-download. If that doesn't help by itself, check to see if the folder is read-only as well, as that may have something to do with it according to other accounts. Thank you, I will try that tonight Thank you for taking the time to look into it for me, this is greatly appreciated ^^ No problem! Glad I could help. If you run into more problems or that doesn't work, we'll keep digging.

Are you on Vista or running an earlier version of Windows Explorer? Sometimes updates reset the browser settings to things that are less than ideal for the patcher to run on.

As far as builds go I usually go for Science, Lockpicking, and Energy-Weapons, in that order. My offense isn't the best but thanks to Science and LP I can get into all the game's secret rooms and shit.
