  1. Holy crap really? ... Damn. I.... might just start RPing my characters in a time bubble then and freeze their ages. I just wanted to celebrate birthdays. ;A; Maybe they'll just be turning the same age every year in a Ground Hog's Day fashion.
  2. But what about the One Year Since Calamity Anniversary event that occurred? That felt pretty actual-lore-based-event-ish because it was actually more than a year since the Calamity - which suggests that's just when they decided to move up in terms of world time.
  3. Okay, so I heard that the entire span of time from 2.0 to 3.0 was actually just one year (or more than a year, but not more than two). Tiergan was 27 and born on the Sixth Umbral Moon (December) while Lurial was 28 and born on the First Astral (January.) Leilani was 14 and born Second Astral (March). I've been RPing that Tier is now 29, Luri is now 30, and Leilani is 16. Should they all actually just be one year younger? :Flails wildly?::
  4. Long time no update! WIP Tiergan/Zaius Image. It's almost done, but I left the damn file back home, so I won't get to finish it for another two months. Dark Knight Tiergan! ... Even though he won't be one IC and will just swing around a two-handed sword for giggles! Leveling it once I get PLD to 60. Doing a thing where I answer people's questions to my characters on Tumblr. This one was asking if Tiergan would go out drinking, and what he would have. Will probably post more of the ones I like on here later on.
  5. I missed a buttload of conversation while traveling. i haven't managed to read the entirety of this thread yet as I'm not feeling too hot, but I guess what I was trying to solve in all of my lore-digging was WHY the Xaela would suddenly be leaving enmasse now if they were already controlled by the Garleans for some time now. I thought perhaps my two Au Ra left after hearing of the Doman escape to Eorzea, but if everything's pretty much business as usual in Othard except for the fact that there's Garlean soldiers wandering around -- I couldn't really figure out why my Au Ra would ever leave. One of them is a poop merchant so I could just say he deicded to expand the poop-selling business into Eorzea, but the other is just some young scrappy kid from the Olkund Tribe who probably wouldn't have left his tribe unless there were some pretty tough circumstances going on.
  6. Whew, sorry for not responding sooner. I was traveling to be with family for health reasons. It seems like I missed a lot of discussion and the thread was split. I think I'll jump in the newly created one because a lot of the conversation there falls in line with a lot of new shiny questions I now have. Thank you for the help folks! o/
  7. Holy crap, the Garleans move damn fast. Also THANK YOU OSRIC, THIS HELPS SO MUCH ALREADY. ;A; I didn't pay attention at all when it came to Othard lore. ;_;
  8. Hrm - sounds like it wasn't a recent thing though - that makes me wonder when the Garleans swept in and how it messed things up for the Xaela. Unless maybe the Garleans *just* started stomping through Xaela areas after tackling the big nation-states? SE, why u no clarify. ;A;
  9. I was pretty sure I heard/read somewhere that Othard was under Garlean control, I went digging through SE’s lore forums, but all I could really find was this single thread which gave the info down below. I was hoping some of our resident loremasters (::LIGHTS UP THE SOUNSYY SIGNAL!:: ) could help confirm/deny stuff so that I can sort out my Xaela alt's backstory better. Right now I have it that he fled with the rest of his clan from the Garleans, but if Othard isn't actually under Garlean control, I have to think of something else. :V I'm also super curious how badly Au Ra were treated by NPC Eorzeans because that would be a neat thing to add in for flavour. Regarding Othard and Garlean Control: Eorzea Mistreatment of Au Ra: however the au ra dark knight and WOL may have a special reason for being kept alive (such as your allowance from house fortomp) but to mix that with the gridania white mage listed above, it seems the Au Ra were not welcomed into eorzea as people think, it seems they were slaughtered solely on looks.”
  10. Yessss, more roeees. Okay I did! Strike off one Hyur, add one Roe! I-I think you've made a wise choice. Yes good. Also, really awesome job matching the hair to that armor, she looks amazing. rooooessss
  11. -snip-. This is admittedly why I got a little anxious in things like the pet peeves thread or in other threads when it sort of feels like people might be veering towards "my-way-or-the-highway" / "you're doing it wrong" land, because it makes me worry that folks are bringing that old "everyone has to RP the same way FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMUNITY" vibe over to FFXIV. ... Umm, where was this attitude last year when several of us got slammed for running an rp event that was meant to be a large, fun thing and, instead, were accused that it threatened -server wide- consistent rp by an -elite- few? Just saying, lets not forget the past so easily. It was once policed. Now if you want to say, it's nice how the community has -evolved- into a community that -now- allows people to have their own types of rp and acknowledges that all these different stories and types of rps are okay and can exist in the game, that I would agree with. Community has become more open minded this past year, no doubts there. I didn't say that it never happened, Askier. Only that its not as prevalent as it is in other communities. The fact that we even got to this point where people go with live-and-let-live is extremely different from any community I have been in. Also server wide events are a whole other basket of things that would need its whole own thread to discuss (and would probably make the moda fear for their sanity.)
  12. EDITED! I was responding to Magellan about the whole pet peeves thing, but I realised it was completely off topic. Magellan - if you want to keep chatting about it with me, feel free to hit me up with PMs. o/
  13. I would love visible internal monologue. I enjoy narrative asides, meditations on things that are unrelated directly but nevertheless thematically related to the action at hand, and other such markers that break the illusion that we are characters in a real world. In this regard I admit I'm a bit reactionary because the realists and modernists were a break away from this sort of thing. On the other hand, I'd also thrill to see anybody attempting postmodern writing aesthetics in RP. Somebody attempting Burroughs' cut-up style in roleplay, however successful, would have my respect, as would anybody who figured out how to take House of Leaves and turn that into a character. Either possibility or others I haven't considered would be welcome. Important note: This is not to say I won't play with people who don't do these sorts of things, and I do so with some frequency. I've long-since had to reconcile myself with the fact that most people working in genre writing like fantasy RP are a bit stuck in this particular style, in part because they're more interested in content than aesthetic. That's why it's a peeve and not a dealbreaker. I am a completely uneducated dork and I have no idea what kinds of writing styles you're thinking of when you mention specific authors or the styles of certain eras. I'm super curious on what you're talking about though just from a 'how majorly different are those styles of writing" stand point. Could you PM me examples? If it's too much of a hassle, it's okay. o/
  14. Yeah, no Hyur. :V ACTUALLY. I have Gelfradus Greywolf, the blind fortune-telling highlander guy. But I really only whip him out for events, so I didn't count him either. :V Yessss, more roeees.
  15. I know it shouldn't make me happy, but it does. It feels really boring being a catte when a massive chunk of the server was also catte. It made everything feel a little less diverse. I thought about changing to something else, but that would mean making completely new characters. While I'm 100% cool with other folks using fantasia IC, I don't really like it for my own characters except for hilarious gags.
  16. I have two miqo'te, one lalafell, one roegadyn, one au ra, and an elezen, but I didn't count my Duskwight because I don't play him nearly as much as my other 5 characters. ...I think I have a problem, guys.
  17. Welcome back! I know your pain in trying to create a new character on Balmung. I've been trying to get a new Au Ra alt on there since a little bit before launch and Balmung's just NOT been open - even 5 minutes before/after a maintenance. I'd definitely go with the server transfer option. It might be something I'll have to consider if I want my Bolir Poop Merchant Au Ra to be a thing. (I am entirely 100% serious.)
  18. Welcome back! I'm sorry to hear you've still got some health complications, but super good to hear that the cancer's been in remission. Hope you enjoy it here and don't forget to give us some info on your character! Maybe in Making Connections? Or create a wiki page! (which can be really addicting and take a while to make as it sucks in your soul :V)
  19. THIS. This is the first MMO RP community I've been in where we don't really have a lot of people policing the ever-living heck out of each other on what is the 'right way' to RP. Policing people and trying to get everyone to RP the same way with the same view on the lore and the same understanding of what is 'correct' was just the default thing people did in other MMO communities. In fact, it was seen as "healthy for the community". I'll be first to admit - I was definitely one of those jerks shaking their heads, going 'tsk-tsk' at people I felt were "doing it wrong". It wasn't until I came here to FFXIV that I first ran into this live-and-let-live attitude towards RP/RP styles and good glory is it refreshing. It's so simple and obvious, but it has such a big and positive impact. Instead of the entire community trying to force the everyone to adhere to a certain way of doing things and looking down on folks who don't go with the flow - everyone here has their own 'right way' of doing things. And most importantly, we all (or at least most of us) acknowledge that it's 100% okay if a bunch of folks have drastically different ways of RPing that can't really be reconciled. We understand that the server's big enough for each person to find their own crew of awesome buddies. You do your thing. I'll do my thing. We'll find friends that mesh with us and everyone's happy. Also - this is less about the RP community and more about Balmung itself - but I REALLY like that I can RP out in the open on Balmung 100% of the time and experience less trolling/clusterfuckery than I ever did in other unofficial RP servers and even actual official RP servers in other MMOs. I think this is a testament to how chill (or at least tolerant) a lot of the Non-RPers are on our server because honestly? It's AMAZING to me that the Quicksand can be an actual RP hub without legions of trolls constantly slamming into it day and night to chase everyone out. (::KNOCKS ON FUCKING WOOD::) Sure, every once in a while I get some buck-nekkid dancing roe with a snowman-helmet on, but I find that if I laugh it off or just play along (swap to slut gear, put on horse helmet, and manderville at them), they go off on their merry way.
  20. Sounsyyy, you are the best. ;A;
  21. I forgot to add - if your character's age is unknown, please put in a rough estimate. Different RPers sometimes have different ways of interpreting how much time has passed in the FFXIV world, so using current age vs age-they-were-as-gladiators can make it super easy for folks to figure out whether their characters were fighting around the same time as yours. I heart you for using the word Lanista.
  22. Not my intent to be a "Negative Nancy" just getting a feel for what people do and don't like while listing a few of my own. I don't blacklist a person from my rp circle for doing those things nor do I chastise them for it, but I can't promise I won't be rolling my eyes from behind my computer screen. Usually, RP pet peeve threads end poorly. Regardless of your intentions, it is a negative premise. Listing these out commonly rile up some manner of paranoia, making it harder for folks who are already scared, to approach in RP. What does listing out pet peeves accomplish? It's not really a discussion thread. It is also, to be honest, hard to not get the impression that people care a great deal about the pet peeves they list. It smells of "if you do my RP pet peeve, you're not a good RPer or a good writer." But I get the feeling I am starting something with this. If you're posting just remember the following: A: no RPer is perfect B: you probably do something that somebody else considers a pet peeve C: those who invoke a pet peeve on your list probably have lots of other great positives about their RP style D: relax sometimes; it's good for you Lastly, I don't consider things like meta-gaming, God moding, power gaming, ic/ooc crossing as pet peeves, personally. I would consider those common courtesy. This. Not sure what else threads like these really accomplish except making folks hyper-aware that something they do in RP irks someone else. There are TONS of things I dislike in RP that other folks do - but I also know that those folks can have tons of fun doing things that I don't like. If I don't enjoy something - I just ignore it. If I dislike it so much I can't RP with that person, I just politely refrain from RPing with them. Simple as that. Don't really see the use in airing it out to the world. ...unless of course they're things like 90ks or FFXIV eating long detailed posts. :V Those are legitimately annoying as all hell.
  23. Tiergan - Odin (SWOOOORDS!) Lurial - Shiva (Fellow ice queen. Also for reasons that are Heavensward spoilers) Leilani - Ramuh (Protects the forest!) Furious Storm - Ramuh (Because he doesn't temper not-Sylphs) Jirandai - Ifrit ("He's so cool looking and HE MAKES FIRE!")
  24. After chatting with a bunch of fellow gladiator RPers, I thought it might be neat to actually assemble a list or directory of all the Gladiator RP characters and their info so that each of us can kind of be all “Oh yeah, I know that guy from my gladiator days!”, "I fought that guy once!", or even "THAT ASSHOLE IS MY ARCH NEMESIS!" BALMUNG GLADIATOR DIRECTORY This is a google document you are free to look at for info or to fill out with your own character information. I'll eventually try to sort it alphabetically! Character Name (Also your RPC Wiki Page if you have one!) Gladiator Name (If not the same as Character Name. Example: Franz the Fair, The Hellfire Phoenix, The Lightning Prince, Halone’s Fury) Current Age ( If your character's age is 'unknown' give a rough estimate! It helps people figure out whether their character was gladiator'ing around the same time as yours. ) Age While A Gladiator - (Feel free to list a range if it was for more than one year. Such as 20-34 or 15-24) Main Weapon (Lance, sword, cesti, daggers, etc. You can list a secondary weapon if it was used frequently or alongside the first weapon.) Fighting Style (Try to keep it brief! It can even just be a single sentence long.) Where They Fought/Fight both past and present (Coliseum, Grindstone. Illegal Death Matchs. Underground fighting pits. Etc.) Any Other Notable Characteristics (Were they a gladiator slave? Was there something unique about how they fight? Did they ever do anything interesting before/after battles?)
