  1. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=10821 <---- To make Osric not be sad, I have split this off into a new shiny thread so this one can continue being about what it's supposed to be about.
  2. I broke it off from the RPC and You thread because Osric was sad. :V I guess I don't feel like it has to be some sort of IC hook up alone where we serve up the RP to someone, but more like a friendly resource they can feel comfortable to approach and talk to. I don't know, I guess to me one friend goes a long way in at least getting the foot in the door. Perhaps, I am a bit idealist! Perhaps I'm just worried that it sets a bad or false precedent on what to expect. It should go without saying that everyone ought to make an effort to be more inclusive and receptive, especially when RP'ing in public. I agree with you. I also recognize that many of us are so swamped for time that we can't be there for the new people. I can't speak for anyone else, but between a 40 hour work week, a three-hour commute every day to-and-from, any time I sink into PvE, time spent on FC RP, time spent on event RP, time randomly spent roaming Thanalan/insert-region-here, and the regular and not-so-regular demands of my own life, I can't be as inclusive as someone who has the time to dedicate and say, "I can be there to work with new people." We all have differing lifestyles that affect how inclusive and receptive we can be. If we're RPing in public, yes, we should make an effort to be inclusive and receptive. But just because the midlander in the sipahi turban and Immortal Flames jerkin is just standing around watching the Quicksand doesn't mean he isn't juggling two different conversations under his breath over two different linkpearls while scanning the crowd for a potential informant who he needs to somehow slip some coin so he can get some dirt on the latest scum to find their way into this city, and hey, guess what, if that's what he's doing, he's not going to have time to sit down and discuss chocobo breeding with the latest Miqo'te who just randomly walked up to him to try and be friendly. This has very little to do with OoC inclusiveness/receptiveness and everything to do with the story of that character at that moment. But you know what? That Wildwood Elezen lass over that-a-way, she's DEFINITELY down for that sort of thing, and she's got nothing else on her plate at the moment, and boy oh boy did you know that if you invest in the proper feed.... EDIT: There's also the trouble with characters who are, for story purposes, more or less region-locked. EDIT 2: Please resume original discussion(s). ; ; Sophia's concerns and what Osric mentioned here are why I definitely am against the idea of actually assigning designated mentors. Assigning a role places too much of the burden of responsibility on the shoulders of others and availability/mental-state/RP priorities change all the time. It's also needlessly complicated and encourages unrealistic expectations. I really think all we literally need is just for people to ask themselves: 1) Do I actually WANT to RP with this new person that just posted this "RP with me" thread? (AKA: Do I want to make a new friend? Does it seem like both of us would have fun? Does our RP align? ) 2) Am I FREE to RP with this new person that just posted this "RP with me" thread? (AKA: Do I have freetime I want to spend with a new friend after all my real-life/in-game obligations? Am I not choked by outside projects that consume all my time?) 3) Are you in the right place right now to make a new RP friend? (Am I free of stress/sad-feels and am in a good mental state to meet with new shiny people?) If the answer to all questions is "Yes" - awesome! All that's really needed now is that when you say "I'd be happy to RP with you." in someone's thread - try to make the effort to also hit them up with a PM with your availability so you guys can sync up and RP instead of just simply saying "I'd be happy to RP with you if you run into me in game!" and leaving it at that. If the answer to one of the questions is "No"- that's still OK! This doesn't make you or anyone else a bad person or a person who is not supportive of welcoming new RPers or a cliquish elitist dork. It just means you can't do it right now or you're not in a good place for making new friends, etc, etc. I most definitely can't answer yes to all the questions right now because I have painfully little freetime, the job hunt is murder, and when I do log in, I'm usually exhausted. If someone wants to tell me that I'm a horrible person for spending what little free time I have doing what I need to unwind, then they're poops. But when I DO actually make an effort to post in a thread "Hey, I'd be happy to RP with you" - I also make it a point now to send a PM to that person and chat about availability (or at least tell them I'm interested but will not really be free until [x]-date in my current case to show I'm interested, but busy as hell and will poke them again later.) Then when I actually meet with someone - I don't treat it like a mentorship. I just treat it like just regular old RP. Anyone who wants me to hold their hand and spoon-feed them RP is going to be sorely disappointed, but anyone who just wants a fun casual RP interaction with my character and a possible IC friendship/rivalry/etc will hopefully jive with me just fine.
  3. I think I may have worded myself a little weird, but I didn't mean to imply that we take away responsibility from new people to arrange a meet up. It's not anyone's job to hunt down and fish up RP for new people after all. I just think newbie and not-newbie should be meet each other halfway in terms of getting together for RP. I feel like encouraging a community culture where if you post a new person's Looking For RP thread saying "Yes, I will totally RP with you." we actually take that one step further by either PMing that person with "Here are the days/times I am on and free. I'm pretty much always [x] location all the time when I'm RPing." OR "I'm online these days/times - if you are free one of these days we can totally meet up and do things." would be ideal. Saying "I'm always up for RP! Hit me up if you see me in game!" - while kind (and I'm earnestly not trying to slam on anyone who's done this before because I have 100% done this in the past too), ultimately doesn't really help folks because it doesn't list what timezone they are, when they're free, where you can find them, etc. I agree with Freelance that a mentor system may not work out as well as it sounds. It's great in theory, but every time I've seen an RP initiative for a mentor system in an RP community, or even in some guilds I've been in - it hasn't ever worked out with great success. It could just be as simple a stickied thread like Osric mentioned that lists people who are up for newbie-RP, their day/times when they are usually free, and inviting folks to PM them if they'd like to RP sometime. Though I do also think that if you sign up for that thread of "new-person friendly" you should also: 1) Not use it as an FC recruitment drive. 2) Sign up being aware that all the new people may have lore-beliefs that may not align with yours at all. You might have to just be very flexible and receptive at least for the first meeting. (AKA, you don't like WHM RPers. Newbie is a WHM RPer, etc, etc.) [Edit: Whoops, Osric is already rolling with it. AWESOME o/]
  4. ^ THAT is a really awesome idea. When real life is no longer slaughtering the majority of my free time, I would totally be up for tossing Leilani Leilai into a Welcoming Committee-type set up. (Tiergan's way too anti-social :V)
  5. I feel like we need to figure out a way to arrange actual meetings for brand new RPers posting in the Making Connections forum from a "I'm having trouble finding RP and could really use some! Halp!" standpoint. Right now the way the forum often (but not always) works for some new people is that: 1) RPer who is completely brand new to the MMO/Community/RP needs help looking for RP and posts a thread. 2) Other people post that they would love to RP with that person! "Just hit me up in game sometime! I'm up for anything!" 3) ALL of the work actually finding the people who posted on their thread is completely laid at the feet of the OP. I know everyone means well when they post on a thread saying that they'd love to meet with someone who needs help looking for RP. I've been guilty of it myself a few times, but I feel like a lot of new RPers posting in the Making Connections forum are either really shy folks or they just have trouble finding people -- which is why they wound up in the Making Connections forum to begin with. I can also tell you as someone who had to spend a month literally hunting after 50+ people to stick them on my friend list so I could poke them later for a plot (that has completely stalled because real life is eating my face with jerb hunts :V), its REALLY hard finding people you've never met before who are of varying timezones and schedules when the game doesn't permit you to stick them on your friends list when they are offline. Perhaps we can reframe the idea of the Making Connections thread from "Newbie posts thread. Onus is on Newbie to do all work finding the contacts who posted in their thread." to something more along the lines of: 1) If you don't have time right now to RP with them, but you definitely want to sync back up with them in the future when you do have more freetime - post when you're going to be more free or just post in the thread later when you have free time. 2) If you post in a new RPer's thread that you're totally up for meeting and RPing with them, actually send them a PM with your availability and figure out a time when the both of you can meet up. These don't have to be rules - they can be suggested guidelines, but I definitely feel if more people did the second thing, all our newbies would gets much more use out of that Making Connections forum.
  6. My shading techniques are a mix of a bunch of other artists' shading techniques I've picked up over the years all mixed up together. I'm really itching to make some art again and when I do, I'll probably just record a quick livestream of myself painting so folks can see how I work.
  7. I'm glad you guys had fun with Leilani! I've been sort of MIA because of real life insanity, but I'd definitely be up for RPing with you two again. Tiergan's not so much an asshole - just has a hard time connecting with people outside of a combat situation. ::Scoops up out from behind rock:: ::twirls around and kidnaps for RP!:: No hiding behind your rock! We can be shy derps together. :>
  8. Cute facial expressions! I can really get a nifty sense of personality from each one!
  9. Thanks folks! I'm already getting a couple of ideas. I'm slooowly getting to the point where I can actually have something that almost resembles freetime again, so hopefully soon I can put all of this advice to good use (and bumrush Sounsyy at last :V).
  10. Titan Ex and it's 5-way Landslides + Baby Titans shall forever haunt me.
  11. H'okay. So as I may have mentioned a few times now - I'm cripplingly shy. This crippling shyness often gets in the way of me hunting down the random RP, which is why I like events. The only character I have where this is 2000% not a problem is Leilani Leilai, because she's a plucky, outgoing bard-in-training who likes to grill people for their delicious glorious tales of greatness to make into song later which makes it SUPER easy to just fling myself in the middle of RP and engage people. Unfortunately, I have an almost impossible time with Tiergan because he's an anti-social grump face and when you're a shy person playing an anti-social grump face character it can be really tough to just launch yourself into RP. You're pretty much fighting through two levels of "ohgodtherearepeoplehereOhNo". He's not really the sort of person to frequent a bar to meet new people, so sometimes I try to invent reasons for why he would be at a place like the Quicksand or some other tavern establishment in the first place - but that solves the "Why would he be there?" problem and not really the "Why would he want to meet new shiny strangers?" problem. Any ideas? Or is this just kind of the deal I cut for myself by rolling Tiergan the way I did? If so, I'm cool with that, because it's not absolutely imperative that I find random RP with Tiergan - I just wanted to see if anyone else had any suggestions before I just stick to Leilani as my primary "git dat Random RPs" character.
  12. I'm also in the "Need Both" camp. If I can't RP in an MMO, I quickly get fidgety, anxious, and quit. If I can't PvE in an MMO, I get bored after a while and quit.
  13. ^ I don't play any villains (at least not yet), but I find it insanely boring of you have a villain only for him or her to get mopped up within a few days of their appearance. Then again, I really like long drawn-out conflict. I can also both agree and disagree with Verad. Villains where you can't understand their motivations at all from any angle can be TERRIFYING - which is why Cthulhu-type monsters and villains are freaky and horrifying as heck. When you can't reason with something or even begin to see through its eyes, it can be incredibly scary and throws things a little off-balance (in a good way). Villains in a friend's RP story are very cthulhu-mythos-like in nature and it gives the RP a very intense, horror-based feel where the villains feel overwhelming. However, I'm also a huge sucker for Villains you can kind of relate to/identify with just because it can create a huge glorious emotional conflict for both readers (if we're talking about a book) and characters (if we're talking RP) to face a villain where they obviously need to be stopped, but you can relate to them or understand them. That conflict might come from either the fact that you get why they're doing what they're doing and a part of you wishes you didn't have to face off against them at all OR conflict might come from the fact that you can identify with what they're doing and it freaks you out that you can identify with a crazy horrible villainous person int he first place. Sometimes it can be interesting to have a story where the villain is essentially a mirror to yourself, save for a few minor details that set them on a different course. I guess it's all in what sort of narrative you're going for.
  14. Updated my info for Luri. Also, I might possibly actually have slightly more free time now maybe. :V
  15. Whew, I'm glad you bought it through the Mogstation. People I know from 1.0 who bought the CE from the store wound up having two separate accounts. They had to contact SE to shut the new account down and transfer the CE status to their original account.
  16. Holy shit. Glad to see they didn't skimp out on the quality for a game running this long in production.
  17. Suddenly wish I had patience to roll another character. :V Clever thinking Chachanji/Sounsyy! I'm really partial to that idea. So much yummy character conflict in one neat package.
  18. There's plenty of corrupted elemental you have to deal with in the CNJ storyline and such. Maybe one could purposely corrupt an elemental of appropriate power and somehow get it to bestow Succor? Oooh -- that's actually pretty interesting. ... Could someone DO that? I mean, you'd be getting Succor from an evil elemental that's borked to all hell and back, but that would be some pretty sweet character conflict to suddenly realise that the not-actually-conjury-powers-like-you-thought-they-were-holy-crap gifts you were getting from awesome Elemental buddy is Succor and your buddy is a corrupt Elemental in desperate need of cleansing. (Which likely means your Succor goes away once it's cleansed. Dun DUN DUNNN!) That or an Arcanist tossing out Resurrect/Physick (at least, if they're meaningfully waving around a book in someone's direction), yep! No one would know unless that character trotted up to someone and promptly said "By the way, I'm a White Mage." which honestly doesn't really come up that often at all. You could easily just have your character be a White Mage who keeps it very much on the down low that they are a White Mage and pretends to be a conjurer around virtually everyone until they really, really trust someone. Then you can OOCly decide who you RP the "I am a White Mage" bits with depending on whether or not you know they're comfortable with it. Best of both worlds. You get to RP with almost e'eryone.
  19. I recently decided to shave a portion of my head for shits and giggles and I figured it was finally time for me to post something here that's not me in cosplay. Unfortunately, because my roommates weren't around to take a decent picture of me, I had to go with awkward bathroom-mirror selfies and brought back horrible memories of my teenage years. I like to think the last picture is clearly the best one. :V
  20. I am super guilty of exploiting "grey area" simply because as expansive as SE's lore is, there are a lot of bizaare gaps of information that desperately need to be filled. (Please for the sweet love of god, give me more Duskwight culture lore, SE! I need something more to go one than "Lives in caves. Usually become or are stereotyped as huge dickish bandits.") However, when it comes to playing with grey areas, I like to go with things that are similar to or may even already have a precedence to something already in the lore. There is nothing in the lore that states there is a crazed Ifrit Worshiping (oddly non-Tempered!) Cult somewhere out in Southern Thanalan, but I doubt anyone would think it's lore-breaking for something like that to exist in RP because of things like the Lambs of Dalamud. There may not explicitly be lore that states long ago a woman who revered Siren (or the sirens?) once cast a spell upon an entire settlement and led away all males living within it to be sacrificed by the sea in her name -- but it could have happened. If someone announced that their excavation team discovered a strange set of ruins deep within [x], location that seems to have a strange aether signature pulsing within it -- it may not be explicitly mentioned in the lore, but the game has so many dang ruins from so many lost civilizations, that I wouldn't bat an eye. It's the plausible vs the improbable. If something is plausible and has aspects that are similar to things already existing in the setting, I feel more people are willing to bend and roll with it.
  21. I have to be honest in that I don't really understand the level of animosity being sent ArmachiA's way. Personally, I don't get too bent out of shape when someone's character claims to be a white mage and will continue RPing with them. (Provided they are RPed with an appropriate level of weight and not simply "I became a WHM prodigy at the tender age of 17 after becoming BFFs with the Padjal.") Thus, I may not agree with ArmachiA and others 100% on all of their opinions in this thread. That said -- this is literally a thread where someone invited others to inform and discuss with them about the details of WHM lore. This means we will naturally get conflicting opinions on things and just like many of you have a right to assert that there IS a viable and lore-friendly way to RP White Mages -- other people also have the right to assert that they strongly feel it utterly breaks the lore and they're not comfortable with it. Additionally, while I can't say the same for every person in this thread - ArmachiA specifically went out of her way to say that people are free to RP how they like. Simply stating "I don't think WHMs can RPed while also being adherent to the lore and I believe in adhering to the lore" shouldn't be a source of animosity - especially when there were no insults being tossed about. So long as no one is acting like a flagrant jerk, I like to think we're all mature enough as a community to disagree with one another without resorting to snipes or anger. I think the best way to sum up this thread is that there is a considerable amount of lore, and word from the developers, that make a sizable chunk of the community uncomfortable with the idea of White Mage RP. However, there is also a sizable chunk of the community who feels that the lore does provide enough grey area for people to create White Mage characters, along with word from the developers that there might be alternative ways for people to become WHM in the future. Everyone should examine the different perspectives - come to an understanding that they may not get to RP with every single person in the community because we all have different tastes and some may not be comfortable with what you decide - and choose the path that best suits what they would like to do when it comes to White Mages and RP.
  22. I don't mind doing the story over. I just hate all of the running around to unlock every. Single. Trial. And dungeon. All over again. I kind of wish SE would do an account wide flag that indicates someone has finished x-amount of content on a character and thus all the dungeons and such are automatically unlocked for them on alts once their alt hits the appropriate level and point in the MSQ Though knowing how the current team had to work with the old shitty team's code as the foundation, I could understand if doing that would be way too painful an undertaking.
  23. Won't be free to help out until late march sadly. Lurial Vashir - ilvl116 Scholar Content Cleared - Coil T1-10, Garuda EX, Leviathan EX, Moogle Ex, Ramuh Ex, Shiva Ex Tiergan Vashir - ilvl116 Paladin Content Cleared - Coil T1-7, Garuda EX, Leviathan EX, Moogle Ex Desired Content - I'm mostly just here to help :> Though I do need Ramuh Ex/Shiva Ex for Tiergan. However, I heard tanking Ramuh can actually be somewhat difficult and I'm not sure if I want to subject people to my derpadin tanking.
  24. It's even worse in the case of Dragoons where there is literally a chosen one - the Azure Dragoon. Dragoons are a good bit more plausible just by virtue of there being plenty of dragoons back in Ishgard. Of course, people tend to take that in the wrong direction by having their Ishgardian DRGs just walking around the Quicksand with no reason why they're so far away from home. True, people can definitely be *a* dragoon as anyone who has killed a dragon gets to be called one. It only gets hairy when someone claims to be The Azure Dragoon.
  25. I just really don't understand where this interpretation comes from because it makes several assumptions that seem ridiculous in the grand scheme of things: A. The only Padjal in the entire land happen to be the five NPCs referenced in 2.0. B. If not that, then they all think the same like a series of clones even though they all come from differing backgrounds. C. This is the only way to do it. D. That the reliance on the so-called will of the elementals is actually something more than exaggeration and superstition. A lot of this obviously absurd imo, but what really settles it is the official site disagrees with it outright:. As others have mentioned Fernhawles himself sadly confirmed there is only one. As you play the game OOCly - that character happens to be you. Also, the Elementals are very real and not superstition. They were extremely powerful prior to the calamity and if you read onto the lore, they were so furious with how the Races of Man were misusing the art of Succor that they LITERALLY brought about an Umbral Age by causing a massive flood to wipe out the Mage wars going on at the time. They drove people underground and then took away the art of Succor which is when people were no longer able to be WHM. if your character believes the Elementals are just superstition, they basically also believe the actual source of white magic isn't real. Additionally going into the Shroud as an outsider basically marked you for death (greenwrath) by the Elementals until you appeased them before the Calamity struck. In 1.0 it was framed as pretty terrifying and hostile. I actually hated it because from an RP perspective, it made zero sense why anyone would ever go to Gridania if they were not Gridanian. I also strongly encourage you to watch the WHM cutscenes again. The Padjal NPCs make a huge deal about how no one but Padjal get to be whm and how you are the first person in a long time who is not padjal and a whm. I personally don't get upset if someone RPs that they are a white mage, but I do prefer that people understand what a HUGE DEAL it is to be one. Its not just a suped up version of conjurer. It is something massively special and you have to have done something really special to get it. Not just "trained really hard and became master WHM at age 20". But these are my preferences. Different strokes for different folks.
