How do you RP out GLD/Flash and MRD/Overpower?
Harmonixer replied to Tiergan's topic in RP Discussion
Anchor Howl and Castle of Stone was it? Eitherway, I was quite fond of that shows representation of tanks. Really badass. I always assumed that Flash was an aether based radial blind using the weapon as a catalyst. Overpower, I hadn't ever considered for some reason. -
Whoo! This thread/s are going well! My current character is a 7. Or a 0? He doesn't fight, at all. The only incident that involved him in combat was more of a favor to a friend, not canon if you will. He's certainly more 'odd' than dangerous. Most people end up seeing him -after- all the fights with the OP fellows. If there's anything left! I prefer to keep him that way, until Heavensward and I make a new character.

Reasoning for irregular race/nationality combinations
Harmonixer replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
You know, there was a ton of posts in this thread that I found myself agreeing upon. Others, had me frowning a little because I didn't quite agree, but I respected it all the same. Then I read this one and said: "I should prolly hang out with this person." The offer is extended! I did it! Moving on to the topic. Ish. I think I mentioned before, but I can vouch for OP. I'll be the first to admit a few times I came across things they said and thought that this was likely someone I should be careful around because 'shit, they might judge me', and 'maybe i should avoid this person'. Having numerous encounters with several people that share the same opinions of OP, not a single one of them has been a dick to me. In fact, the only people to outright be rude to me, very likely have no clue they were simply because they have their heads too far up their own asses. The opinions aren't the problem, it's the people. There is some legitimately nice people around here, much to my surprise. Helpful and nice at most times. I haven't been snubbed for wanting to RP with someone. It's never been an 'this is our circle of clearly lore-centric only people' and even when I watched someone try to bring their SUPER CATGIRL SNOWFLAKE into the fray, not one of those people were rude about it. They even tried to help them justify it! Spending quite a bit of time trying to figure out ways for it to work, ways to make it fit in with the lore and how strange, the person in question only saw it as an attack! It was a shame, really. None of them said 'you can't rp with me' or 'i won't rp with you'. I'm sure they won't go out of their way to RP with them, but they definitely didn't make it hostile. I wrote this whole section about half breeds, but I deleted it on second thought. Anyway, use your brains people. I'll repeat myself again: "It's always about presentation." One hundred percent. Are you a dead guy who lost his girlfriend or are you a shambling corpse that was denied eternal rest because of unfinished business? Are you a rich pretty gal noble or are you a incredibly narcissistic well-off lady with daddy issues and a habit of cuttin' your 'enemies' Are you a catboy ninja or a... eh, someone will figure the rest of that out. It is, exactly what you make it. Learns to present things well. disclaimer: don't take my examples are gospel, i don't hate catspeeps, i don't hate anyone. The singularity is coming anyway, you're all fucked. -
Originally I was going to talk about some example of power, but thinking it over as I type makes me want to say this instead: It's prolly more important to apply 'power' to your character that can be adjusted and throttled to RP properly. Balance is of course very difficult to work of course, but when I find myself wanting to place things that I know would be somewhat frowned upon without details in my RP, I try to make it's shortcomings readily apparent first. This comes from me simply over-analyzing everything I do for myself. It has it's detriments but so far I've been mildly successful with putting things into motion by being subtle and not slamming it into the face of my partners. I try not to just list something as an ability or a power, I get specifics and try to string them together so that they make sense and can be understood. Okay, so I will make an example actually. Think of shields. It's easy to just have 'a powerful tower shield that can take x amount of blows and repel magic'. But the stuff I think about, is the arm and body the shield is protecting. Can it withstand the force? Magical or otherwise? It's the whole bulletproof vest thing in movies, you know what I'm talking about. Other things to remember too, in rl we have plenty of feats that are considered impossible that few people in the world can do with ease. Since this is a fantasy (stop laughing) I don't see the problem of letting it happen a little more than usual. So yeah, kick a pillar because you've got five stacks of 'holyfuckimreallyunhappy'. It wouldn't happen just any day, the situation seemed to call for it. I don't want to play a character that is in a position to fight the things we come across and not be able to actually stand up to it. Seems like a bad idea to me. How can we protect people, much less fight a war without somewhat super human ability? Just don't go ham with mouth beams or some chit. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Lore drops concerning Dragoon via the Heavensward Opening:
Harmonixer replied to Zelmanov's topic in RP Discussion
Following up on the age bit mentioned before. Anime culture and all of the things it influences seem to have this habit of making incredibly versed combatants that are the ripe age of teen angst and highschool thought processing, despite being exposed to the 'horrors of war'. Older characters are less popular with the target audience, cited as 'harder to relate to'. I find it more likely from younger characters able to perform these feats only because of things like Soul Crystals, if I've understood them correctly. Maybe we could argue that armors (aethericly?) compensate for lack of experience and do some of the work. Kind of like a powered armor concept, with... aether. I still think it would be very uncommon. I can repeat things about presentation, but for the sake of this discussion I'd like to think it's better left to older adventures and soldiers that are more likely to have the experience up to that level of 'power'. 'Highly unlikely' but not impossible. My head canon is that the fellow who got eaten was one of our younger protagonist types. 'He's not coming home honey, you better move onto Option B-kun.' Also, something occurs to me: It would take an almost impossibly brave individual to do this sort of stuff. It really occurred to me as I watch it more, just how absolutely batshit you'd need to be as a character to do this sort of thing. Perhaps I feel to some degree, that it's not widely well represented in RP? A friend of mine calls it being 'needlessly overconfident' in the most affectionate way possible. That all being said, I still think it would be cool to have a bunch of DRGs carried over to a battle in airships to engage in glorious aerial combat with some of the dragons. -
Lore drops concerning Dragoon via the Heavensward Opening:
Harmonixer replied to Zelmanov's topic in RP Discussion
I do somewhat agree that PC's that aren't the WoL are capable of -some- of these feats. I also however don't think that everyone is capable of doing it, because they certainly would be if that was the case. You wouldn't be fighting a war like that and just suddenly go 'nah, I'll stay down here and take these to the face'. Seeing one of the DRGs fail too seemed really important to me. I personally am going to take this as 'there clearly isn't only one way to skin a dragon'. Obviously aether boosted armors, Soul Crystals, weapons, everything needs to be in place. But to outright deny people this just closes doors. I think it's poor showing to deny it. To both ends! Repeating myself, but presentation is everything. -
Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward Opening Movie [SPOILERS FOR 2.55]
Harmonixer replied to allgivenover's topic in FFXIV News
I was actually thinking the same thing. I've mentioned it before, but the new area reminds me a lot of Lindblum and areas from FFIX just in general. I'm completely okay with that! On the subject of dragoons, since I'm sure this topic is so fondly revisited- I'm starting to think it's less of a matter of whether it's possible or how likely it is. While some RPers prefer to have characters that aren't close of such feats, it shouldn't be completely frowned upon. I also don't think -everyone- should be that 'powerful'. As ever, it's a matter of presentation but I don't think it confirms that suddenly everyone can do it, otherwise they would, right? Clearly some factors are in place, but not nearly as unreachable as people make it out to be. Also, maybe it's just me that gets crazy amount of gray hairs when I'm stressed. If that chit happened to me and I lived through it, I doubt I'd look half as good as he did. DRK looks cool, I actually liked the AST more there though. Very excited to see them played more. I may even try to heal for once! -

Famous Last Words: Character Death and You
Harmonixer replied to Harmonixer's topic in RP Discussion
I always felt that it was unlikely that all charr would have been able to forget what happened over 250 years ago. I never encountered any RP like this in my time on GW2. Hearing stories like this makes me glad something other than the usual circle jerk sessions I always witnessed happened. It has me curious though, were you ever avenged? On that note, does a character death mean blood for blood? I suppose it really depends on the situation. I don't feel so alien to a lot of posters now, about not wanting to lose a character. I don't think I would consider my characters invincible, but I'd like to enjoy them at my own set of rules. Maybe it's selfish but I'll be mindful of their situations and continue to be clear about my intents with RP. @Kismet That's an interesting perspective for an MMO character to me. I felt if I took that stance with my own characters I'd be detached from them. Maybe it's an issue with bleed or projection or something? I try to keep certain aspect of myself from shining through. As often, I am almost nothing like my characters. @Natalie McBeef: Ah-hah! I wondered what had happened to that character. The OOC portion does have me worried. I'm not exactly well known in these parts but the people I have interacted with are lovely people. I'm fearful that I'd lost trust if I suddenly just murdered one of my characters out of no where. @Warren: I think I'm in the same boat as you about story telling. I'm not one for death just to get a rise out of people. I think it's... tacky. For lack of a better description. But if it comes with purpose and proper consequence then I apply where necessary. To be clear, I still plan to convert my main to an Au Ra. Unless something grand comes of my current one. I'm open minded, but it mostly stems from lack of wanting to do work over again. Currently I'm leveling other Jobs in preparation of Heavensward. I change my mind often when it comes to things I play, because I like options. I want to be able to fit roles I'm comfortable with if need be. I'm aware it's a little 'dangerous' to want to throw all my chips in for a race we know nothing about for the time being, but... I'm somewhat confident. Worse comes to worse, I'll be able to do the RP thing and figure it out. Right? -
Yes. With varied effects. Generally speaking I would say your emotions are not unwarranted and you shouldn't hold it too close to your heart if you can help it. Flynt mentions that it's just a game, and he's very right in that regard. But our emotions are real, it's about how you want to let it effect you in the future. I say use it to empower yourself and take a lesson learned from it and try to apply it for good in the future. It's vague I know, but I once had a theatre teacher that told me something I'll never forget, it gets really corny from here: "While you are still young, you should fall in love as many times as you can, and get hurt as many times as you can because there's something out that that doesn't want you to experience anything. Ever, at all. Have your dreams crushed and you hopes high and when the grim times come the good ones will be so sweet you'll only come to appreciate them." She cried a lot when she said it, and I was kinda young. So maybe I'm adlibbing a little. Eitherway, the point resonated with me. Break a leg out there.
-
Mostly this. I lied though, gott I want just more armors. Cloth, plate, mail, leather I just want more of it. More accessories and boatloads of new weapons. I'd be content with it all. So long as we can dye them too! With all the GG links, it makes me hope that the forementioned armors will bring even more variety to the table. I love that universe so much, and now with the newest game and how fleshed out it is, fffffffffffffffffffffffffffff. Oh, please give us something to fix PvP queues. They are the absolute worst.

Famous Last Words: Character Death and You
Harmonixer replied to Harmonixer's topic in RP Discussion
Firstly, thank for everyone for all the replies so far! I picked this post in particular because I feel as though I've been in a similar boat. My frustration for my character became really overwhelming and I was certain the only solution was to explode him in a blaze of glory. It started well enough, I had ambition to make him really grow as I played the game (not this one) and it just repeatedly failed. I wasn't good with the concept and I couldn't get into it. I ended up bailing on the whole thing and just left him to rot, not quite embracing his death on the off chance I grew more as a person and than wanted to come back to it. I would never consider my characters invincible. I've allowed a few deaths to happen, but they weren't ever in MMOs. I don't know if it's my unwillingness to relevel them or it's more to do with the fact that I'm attached to them. I think... I think in the right conditions it could happen. It really depends. I admit that I'm a person that is somewhat of a perfectionist. If I feel my characters are poorly represented by myself then I will do whatever I must to make them fit. Sometimes, this can cause a minor issue with others, but a lot of it is just the old tried and true communication thing. I wouldn't want to have a perma on this game I don't think. The conditions again, would have to be perfect. -
A random thought passed my mind while leveling the other day: "I wonder how other people handle their own character deaths?" More specifically, have you as a RPer ever considered ICly killing off one of you own characters permanently before? Done it already? What were the reasons and how much did it effect you (or others?) I'm curious about the stories that may come of this. So please, share them! Having recently talked to people that are very unhappy with their own characters and reconsidering their options, is death an answer for them? Or a 'simple' retconning.Fantasia has people divided if it's lore friendly or not, so some choose the darker path.

It doesn't matter how you see it, it only matters who SE presents the class in the context of the game. Paladins in XIV aren't holy, and they're already plenty corruptible. Well, that's if you are running the Dark Knight as a Dark Knight as presented in the game. You could certainly run a Paladin that is "corrupted" and still uses the Paladin skillset and whatnot - there's nothing like the DnD Paladin-style vow-to-the-gods mechanic that strips you of your abilities if you step awry, after all. Conversely, you could have a Paladin who takes up whatever darky-dark-darkness path the Dark Knight's method provides for whatever nefarious purposes while still claiming to be a Paladin. Then you technically have a "Corrupted" Paladin despite mechanically being a Dark Knight. It's all really in how you spin it, and how those you RP regularly with react to it. Hm, I should backpedal clarify that I'm taking on the "anti-paladin" concept that always seem the link these two jobs. Traditionally, PLD and DRK wear the same types of gear, do the same types of damage and one channels white magic while the other channels dark magic. That doesn't really work in XIV, though, because paladins aren't holy knights here. They're just knights. Being a fallen knight is an angle, sure, but there's no "falling" away from the light in this case. Sultansworn are guards with a unique sprite, and Free Paladins are trained in a specific method of combat. If you turn away from that, you're not really... evil? You just don't use that style/method/job anymore. Hm, I guess what I mean is that ANYONE can "fall" and embrace Dark Knight. There's nothing inherently anti-paladin about it.

Despite my earlier post I think I looked at it more from the perspective of this: - I'll have even more plate armors to mess around with, edgelord or not there's bound to be some models I'll find appealing and hopefully they can be colored. -It's a new tank class! I quite enjoy tanking as it is. This can't be a bad thing. -New classes are cool! More options, more RPers and certainly more players in general are a good thing to me, generally. I make jokes about being an grimmcdeath hipster, but really- I don't see how it's any different than any other rper out there. It's just another person and it's hardly unoriginal when everyone's intent on pointing out the faults, or what they don't like in others. My thing is, I don't like jerks. I've been incredibly fortunate that no one in-game (or here) has been a jerk about RP. Anyone that I haven't gotten along with, I can just keep the peace, nod and be on my way. It's also been stated repeatedly that you don't have to be exactly as the Job/Class you play in game. I am in agreement with this thinking. Although, I can't help but wonder if: With any luck, there will be a place for something mauraders with greatswords instead of axes to something to that effect. If not, someone's going to have to just play pretend that much harder than usual.

Before the Fall Vs. You [Major spoilers]
Harmonixer replied to ChewableMorphine's topic in RP Discussion
Interesting to see everyone's reactions here. I had a friend screaming at me on skype during it while I was a little behind. It was motivating to say the least. Since I don't have a deeply entrenched character in anything related to current RP I remain unaffected as a RPer. In some ways, I'm unhappy, others I'm grateful cuz it's a lot to consider. But that's a good thing, right? I have a few friends I can observe until until I can really jump into the story in Heavensward. When I have the right lore, I can figure something out, if need be. I found myself a little more caught up in the well being of certain characters, since I'm biased as hell. Yda, Papalymo mostly. I liked Raubahn's scenes. The warrior bit of him coming out is somewhat typical to most I'm sure, but I found it quite pleasing to see. The only problem was the voice actor for Ilberd is Batou from Ghost in the Shell, and I couldn't get it out of my head. Don't get me wrong, he did well and it was enjoyable, my mind just wanders. Also, Yugiri is smokin' hot. -
Far less on this game than I usually get. It's a lack of engagement on my end and committing to any particular character. I hope to change this in the expansion, once the dust settles a little bit. Generally though, I try to pace it for myself. I tend to burn out quickly. Too much and I start to feel fatigue, too little and I get irritable and impatient. It's when it's constant Michael Bay mode that I seek a means of escape.

Currently, I am under the belief that Monster Hunter has collected the souls of past successful hunts and used them to fuel the relentless hate I am experiencing lately. For some strange reason, it's like all of my armors ALWAYS have -10 Sense and large monsters stop all their attacks upon me entering the map. Many of my fellow hunters have witnessed this and it's sort of a running joke now. We're talking constant, constant assaults from monsters. They stick to me like it's their sole purpose. We've got them stuck on rocks trying to chase me down exclusively. Silencers, Hunting Bows, nothing seems to keep this from happening and it's not like I'm gemmed to get aggro. But if I used a Hunting Horn? They never even notice me, it's really strange. Perhaps it's some kind of fucked up balancing act, since I'm very fortunate with drops this version, when I haven't been in previous entries. It's been my favorite entry, but it's really frustrating to experience sometimes. Also, DKingdom is a foul, hateful game. I watched a fistfight almost start. Zero exaggeration. Everyone went home that night really sour. We laugh about it, a little now. But at the time? I was very worried about friendships. We've never played it again.

Oh man, I fuckin' love Oomph! It's the first thing I thought off when I read the thread title. I tend to listen to a lot of german metal. My favorite still being Eisbrecher And I absolutely love love love Rafven

Fanfuckin'tastic post OP! Quite happy to see this. While a lot of the armors in the game are much more ornate and absurd in design it does help dispel the common train of thought that is 'if you're in plate you are unable to move quickly or effectively!'

Anyone have/getting Bloodborne?
Harmonixer replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
The way you have to approach these games is to just explore. The whole set-up is very hands off and sort of expects you to just try different things each time. Most of the dead-ends just lead you to loot and everything else has a purpose. Wander around as far as you can go, you'll figure it out eventually. Don't worry so much about sucking or being a noob. It just came out and even the best players take a long time to get really solid at these mechanics. The games learning curve gets VERY steep once you reach a certain zone I won't name. I was lost there for a whole day, it was truly a nightmare. I just completed the game. I think, at first I was very 'whatever' about the game but now that I've done my first playthrough I'm more or less happy with my experience overall. 30 hours almost to the minute. The theme is a very strong selling point for me, and the combat kept me there. I'd even venture to say it's infinitely better than Dark Soul 2, but in a strange way it's unfair to compare the two titles. My first class was a 'Waste of Skin'. I liked having the ability to sort of experiment with different stats and ended up focusing on STR. Favorite Weapons were Stake Driver (That charged attack with knockback was INCREDIBLE) and Tonitrus. (Tesla mace, fast animation but terrible reach, not that the Stake Driver was any better.) I used the cannon as my gun for a little, but the Pistol ended up getting the most use from me. Both just had simple damage boosting bloodcrest thingys I can't remember the name of. I used Eviserate healing and Bullet Restore and Damage Reduction runes on my self. Ended up at lvl 67. I'm pretty sure I could have done it lower if I payed more attention and was more patient. Like Dev said, I think Skill based weapons are much better for beginners. STR weapons have a really long animation cycle and require a lot of set up. It's good for vets but not so much for bullheaded stuff I don't think. Invest in Bloodtinge weapons too, they have some interesting effects outside of 'parries'. Again, remain confident in your choices and don't second guess yourself. "The sky and the cosmos are one." -

Harmonixer replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
The way the game works, it allows for a few different playstyles. Since red health can get gained back within a certain amount of time- getting clipped by something doesn't mean the end. With the Cane I was able to take on that group. Rushed the fellow on the ground with the firearm, zip back to the next mob and used my own pistol to interrupt an attack/evis. You're invincible during this. It gives me time to think about my next move. The main thing I had to worry about was the ranged guy on the carriage and the dog. It's not so much 'swing ur armz' so much as using the flow of the fight to your advantage. They telegraph often and you'll just need to be attentive. You'll see. Pretty soon there will be a ton of videos with people all playing different and you'll find it's very possible with the right movement. Don't get discouraged! I promise it can be done. Weapons have big arcs and being able to transform INTO evades that also attack? It's not easy by any means... at first. Eventually it'll become second nature. EDIT: Another thing me and a few other peeps playing figured out. I don't recall seeing in this thread On the subject of getting recently lost HP back with attacking, it's also possible to swing a dead body for a few seconds and still gain HP. Say you traded blows with something and you finished it off. If you keep swinging at the body you can still get HP! Even if it's already dead! A good example is those giant boars- you can apply this nearly anytime you get the chance. Only a few mobs I've seen it doesn't work on. -
Anyone have/getting Bloodborne?
Harmonixer replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I really disagree, the evasion really lets you dance between all of them like it's nothing. It's really about paying attention to your stam and not boxing yourself in. It's pretty much the opposite of what you should do in Souls. Get in there, I'm telling you. You can transform attack into evasions, it allows you to get i-frames while getting off a nice power attack- stuns and the advantage. Picking the apart one by one works but you risk boxing yourself in faster. The weapons hit multiple targets and have such intricate animations for a reason I think.
