As someone who played almost exclusively villains or at least very dark grey characters for a while I would liiiiiike to add in my two cents: Know who you’re writing with. Know the characters they’ll be put up against. Know the story you’re trying to tell. Villain is, more or less, my favorite archetype to RP. I’ve been trying to switch it up into “usually well meaning” and “morally forgettable” with my latest characters. However, I’ve played PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING across the villain board from “destitute teenage girl trying very hard to win the approval of murders” to “cult leader orchestrating the death of thousands”. I absolutely loved playing both. And other people found that working with and against them was fun, too! Both served their purpose in regards to what I wanted to write and both fit the narrative myself and others wanted to tell. I can’t say one was objectively better or worse than the other. In fact, if I were to switch their places they would have likely failed miserably as characters.

I definitely think it used to be. The word originated sometime in the 70's and it's 2015 now. We've come pretty damn far since then when it comes to a lot social issues. It's also not something I run into a lot in RP as people will generally explain why a character is awful. That and a writer, try as they might, can force anyone else's characters to love and adore their own. Of course this leads to a completely different brand of bad. Do we have a name for that yet?

J'nali's crushes as they occur to me so far:

Oh! Oooh! This is relevant to my interest. As a (hobby) artist and someone who almost always plays mages. As humans we’ve been drawing on caves with our fingers since we crawled out of the mud. Art and people go way back and the methods to make it have always been neat. And magic. Well, you can just get nuckin’ futs with magic. The idea of incorporating alchemy is definitely awesome. If you don’t mind me blabbering here are some ideas. I will forebodingly be referring to whoever would be having a spell cast upon them as “the target”. Paintbrushes with bits of the target’s hair mixed into the bristles. Canvases with the stretched skin of their most beloved pet(recently or not so recently deceased). Watercolor paintings imbued with the target’s/target’s truelove’s/target’s closest friend’s tears. Paintbrushes with wooden handles carved from tree branches yanked out of the sylphlands. Bits of the target’s clothing painted over so they are inside of the painting. In fact while we're at it just literally push the target inside of the painting and trap them there. Everyone will marvel at your character's shockingly good knack for realism in their art. So lifelike! GROUND UP ORGANS AND BONES FOR THAT SPECIAL TEXTURE/SHADE OF VERY DARK RED. A COW AS WHITE AS MILK, A CAPE AS RED AS BLOOD, THE HAIR AS YELLOW AS CORN, A SLIPPER AS PURE AS GOLD. But seriously, fairytales are an awesome place to look if you want darker magic elements. Even modern ones to a degree. As for materials, there’s a lot that goes into art that isn't paint. Paintbrushes usually incorporate animal hair for their bristles and the wooden handles have to come from somewhere. Back IN THE OLD TIMES it was common to pick one’s magical tools under very specific circumstance which right there is the possibility for an entire plot. Watercolors are also an extremely old kind of paint and I figure the water would have to be just as magic as the paint itself. If the painting will be on display the frame is just as important as what's inside of it and could be decorated with numerous runes/gems/shards for specific magic effect.

I have a crap ton of preliminary sketches to compare to the CC when it comes out and a loose backstory written up that'll be changed varying on lore. So, yeah, 100% on board with that train. Give me the ability to make a tiny screeching dragum lady or give me death.

Ooooh my gosh, this got more replies than I'd been anticipating. @Natalie Mcbeef- I am always down for mad science. I'll find you in game! @Cliodhna Eoghan - AHAHAHA W-WHAT? A-ARE YOU INSINUATING THAT SHE'S TOUCHED A GUN BEFORE? Because I can tell you--No I can solemly swear--that she has never touched a gun in her life. Ever. Definitely. I'm a picky little jerk! But I'll try to narrow it down. Required Voice Chat/Popular Voice Chat. Everyone has kinda covered this one. Too many people/Too little people. A small group of maybe 10 people is a bit too tiny for myliking. There’s a comfort in knowing that if someone people need to spend time away the guild isn’t going to die. However, I’d also like not actually know and play with everyone in my guild. I think around 25/30 tops is a pretty ideal size. Oversexed OOC Chat Either you have no idea what I’m talking about or knowexactly what I’m talking about with this one. Listen, man, I like a good dong joke as much as the next person. I like to objectively discuss sexuality as much as the next person. What I don’t like is feeling as if to be liked/get RP I have to constantly sell my character based on sexual attributes and sexual availability. If the content of chat slowly degrades into “haha and then what (;” . . . Nah, son. I’m done. I’m out. Hands Off Leadership/Lack of player proactivity There’s nothing inherently wrong with hands off leadership. However,it does mean that the players have to make a concerted effort to stay active. If people aren’t reaching out to one another to RP AND the leaders aren’t doing anything to keep things active then there’s not much reason to stay. Too Loose of an Application Process If your friend’s RP partner’s sister’s LS mate can getinto the guild on referral alone I’ll probably give the group a hard side eye. As I mostly join RP FCs and the like I think it’s incredibly important that a character and player can fit the general feel of things. Apps are a great way to do this, in my opinion. It Has A Cool Kids Club I understand that cliques will form anywhere. In fact, Ithink people are really quick to holler IT’S A CLIQUE when they see a group who RP together consistently. I don’t mind that. What I do mind is when they’re given allthe plot and make no effort to involve other people. If there are other players striving to be a part of things then they should get some spotlight, too.

Did the rhyme do it for ya? Man, I hope so. Well, this is the connections thread. So you guys know the drill. I could save you the awful sales pitch and go straight to potential RP hooks but where's the fun in that? Do you need someone to fix something? Do you need someone to build something? Are you in need of an awkward and nervous character foil? Your Chuckie Finster? Your Double Dee? Well look no further! While J’nali Noe is a bundle of nerves and overwrought internal panic I as her writer absolutely need to get her into as many situations as possible, comfortable or not. Possible hooks: Does your character carry any visible firearms? J’nali wants to know them. Does your character have anything to do with airships? J’nali wants to know them. If anything needs to be fixed or built J’nali can take a crack at it. She’s a jack of all trades (ace in gun) when it comes technology and tries to invent in her free time. Your character wants to learn about machines –OR– Your character is willing to teach her more about machines. Rumor has it she makes weapons. That’d be silly, though. Who in their right mind would make weapons? That could attract the wrong sort of attention! That piles on way too much ethical responsibility! J’nali has four other identical sisters who are infinitely more outgoing than she is. Maybe you met one. Maybe she owes you money. Maybe she broke your heart. How horrible. How dare her. Come direct your ire at an uninvolved third party! Your character is tall and intimidating and you need someone shorter and scared looking to stand next to them for hilarious contrastive purposes. Does your character hail from the Jackal tribe too? Well,they likely know one another. Literally anything else. Fall down a flight of stairs and land on her. I don’t care. Hey guys! Just want to put out there that this is a purely OOClinkshell with no need for IC affiliation with any of the officers to get in. We're there to make sure it doesn’t spiral into anything outside itsintended purpose and players who join will need to be proactive about reaching out to other members. We can’t convince your characters to join IC but players can certainly finagle reasons OOC once you’re in to get your character where you want them to go. The only things you need to do to join are: Have a character that is either involved in shady dealing or wants to be involved in shady dealings. Shoot a message to either myself (Lafiaht Dwinani in game), Sylas, or Dasair. None of us bite (well, that I know of) though I have a badhabit of talKING IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE I LIVE IN A CONSISTENT STATE OF UNNECESSARY EXCITEMENT.

Gosh, I feel your pain. While I can appreciate good aligned RP I’m just not feeling it right now and the game has made it abundantly clear that Eorzea is neither squeaky clean nor shiny good. I can’t just let go of the story prospects that are offered there. I'm interested in what you might have in mind as far as a group goes. As for what I'd like to see. . . Well, almost anything honestly. I've got a weakness for "bad guys". I'd give preference but my character isn't even above faking it till she makes it in a cult if it means she's got gil in her pocket and food on the table. And, if you aren’t comfortable the idea starting up a group just yet, I’d be happy to offer up my main as a connection. She runs contraband and correspondence between people who want to remain anonymous, don’t want to get caught with the stuff themselves, or are simply too busy (fists can also count as correspondence). Totally rolling an Au Ra oncethey come out. I’ve been hashing out some ideas with a friend. Vaguely want to make her everyone’s tiny overly concerned mom and a fortune telling Astrologian. Still, I want to wait and see if lore permits this before I go solidifying anything and making plots around it. I am 110% down for having her interact with other Au Ra (and non Au Ra) and get into stuff once I’ve got a stable foundation to work with, though (and maybe wait until they're playable in game. . . Maybe. . . Imeanforumsandskypearethingsoyouknowthere'sthat). B]

Not overly disappointed with the design to be honest considering it’s from the creators of Too Many Belts and What Is That Hair Doing and An Abundance Of Catpeople and The Great Butt Exodus 2k13. Final Fantasy has a pretty distinct thing when it comes to playable races. I knew what I was paying for. Maybe in the future they might supply that demand but if it's low in demand it won't be high in supply. Currently I’m actually pretty enamored with the idea of the Au Ra. I like them in theory. They’re something new, their lore could be cool, and I really really want to see what’s going on there. What's their culture like? How are they going to incorporate a new race into the world? What's their culture like? Were we looking at a min height female next to a max height male? What the hell is their culture like c'mon I really wanna know.

I want this. I want this nine times. I want a cutthroat IC girl gang that wears copious amounts of leather and sneers and boys and I want them to hang out in there. Edit: and they all need blades sewn into the brims of their hats and shoved into the soles of their boots.

This was a fun exercise. Granted first I bawked and guffawed and thought I’d breeze right through this but certain ones caused me to stop and really think about exactly how my character is shaped. ANYWAY, here ya go: Lafiaht Dwinani Rating Scale: 1 - 10. 1 as complete Sin. 10 as complete Virtue. 4 near the middle, closer to the Sin. 5 near the middle closer to the Virtue. Lust vs Chasity 3 Lafiaht is utterly unabashed in her sexuality. Sex—to her—is as much of a biological imperative as eating or sleeping. She’ll bed someone when she feels she needs it but demands respect from her partners. There are clear standards on the Keeper’s part. When it comes to recreational sex partners are in high supply and low demand, and she will happily disengage from one person if it prospects seem better with another. Non-sexually Lafiaht. . . wants. Contentedness is posed as a good thing to keep people with less from wanting more and Lafiaht wants the most. Will she take everything? Likely not, but that doesn’t stop her desires. Gluttony vs Temperance 2 Lafiaht would like to think she can exercise restraint. She really would. When push comes to shove. . .she might! Still, that doesn’t mean she will in all circumstances. The cat staunchly follows a “do what makes for the better story” mantra. Sure, she could say “I went to a party and it was very nice” and that’s. . . quaint but not very interesting. “I went to a party and it was very nice. I drank till I was piss drunk, threw up on the hosts’ wife, and tried to steal a chocobo.” Now that sounds like a good story. Indulgence is the spice of life. . . For Lafi, anyway. Greed vs Charity 5 In conjunction with her ratings on lust and gluttony this may seem paradoxical but. . . There’s no use of being the queen of nothing. There’s no value in your assets if they aren’t shared. Lafiaht has a strong desire for material wealth. . . But sees little point in hoarding it all. There’s a good reason the people at the top of the latter are miserable and lonely, she thinks, and she’d rather not ever be there if she can help it. . . But walls lined with gil would be nice, too. Sloth vs Diligence 7 At first glance Lafiaht seems lazy and utterly shiftless but often times has some sort of goal. . . even if it’s utterly abstract. The Keeper is unable to go through life without some sort of aim. It’s a residual trait from living in a tribe. You can only keep what you can hold and you can only have what you can earn. Duties that Lafiaht takes up will always be completed. Wrath vs Patience 6 As both an arcanist and someone who wants to be a teacher in the future there is little control in anger. Lafiaht may had had trouble with it when she was younger and may face trouble with it under certain circumstance but when rarely does she succumb to an uncontrolled anger. Experience has taught her that a little patience (and experimentation) can go a long way in getting the outcome that she’s looking for. Envy vs Kindness 8 Kindess is what forcibly rips Lafiaht out of the “villain” spectrum and lands her with a dull thud into “neutral” territory. Despite any adversity that’s thrown her way Lafiaht has a near compulsion to be nice (or at least civil) with others more often times than not. Even through her aggressive mannerisms she’d much rather outstretch her hand than kick someone while they’re down. The only thing stopping this from being higher is that Lafiaht's kindness comes at arm's length and people coming too close as a result of her actions are prone to making her drop whatever she's been doing and run off. Pride vs Humility 4 Lafiaht is proud and routinely haughty. Why wouldn’t she be? She’s not one of your giggling Seeker girls or worse some half cocked Nuhn. She’s a woman of the woods. She’s pulled herself out of the mud and away from primitive trappings to become an academic all while staying away from societal trappings as well. She’s amazi—Okay not quite. In fact, while Lafiaht is good at what she does she’s only just started on her road to bettering herself. There’s nothing to show for her perceived strengths and accomplishments. In fact, her pride does little more than hold her back, make her look utterly silly, and keep up tensions between herself and people she might actually get along with were she to tone it down a little. Does your character lean more towards the Sins or the Virtues? Sins. Life is short and death takes all. Should there be a place separate for those with a certain propriety about them Lafiaht wants to be far far away from that place. Which Sin does your character most emulate? Gluttony. On a more spiritual level Lafiaht is so excessive that it’s incredibly difficult for her to acclimate to more modest living. Which Virtue does your character most emulate? Kindness. The world is in bad shape and near everyone has forgotten about the middle men and the little guy. Lafiaht hasn’t. Which of these Sins or Virtues do you and/or your character believe theyneed to work on the most? Humility. Apparently when Lafiaht was shoving her fingers into every pie she could get her hands on she skipped humble pie. There will be no progression for her as a person if she can't learn to take herself down a peg.
