Thing that makes me scratch my head: people demanding that you only play characters with realistic, down-to-earth abilities in Final Fantasy. Another thing that makes me scratch my head: people who give spellcasters free pass to do anything because magic, but demand that warrior types be limited by real world physics. I play all of Imogene's paladin abilities as IC - all of those flashing lights accompanying high level sword techniques, the ability to get stomped on by a huge dragon and survive, and such. This is how the game envisions a high level character, and I stick to it. Also, very little of that is magic - most of it is because powerful heroes are simply that good. I don't think Raubahn's show of power is him using aether, either - at least not in the way mages or monks do. Chalking up all physics-breaking abilities as magic is a very western approach, that ignores the fact that this is a Japanese game - and in Japanese stories, characters whose skill lets them perform supernaturally amazing feats, not because of magic but because they're just that good, are very common. If anyone wants to play a more mundane, realistic character, I am perfectly okay with this. Just don't demand that others do so as well.

The Second Annual Royal Ball of Ul'dah - Update (Time Set)
Imo replied to Erik Mynhier's topic in Chronicled Events
Kudos to people who had fun. I, myself, was only reminded why I usually stay away from large public events. -
Current state of Ul'dah, post 2.55 (Spoilers obviously)

Further proof that Fufulupa is Tiny Captain Carrot. -
You can switch language tracks? Brb, gotta rewatch some cutscenes in Japanese. Some of the characters have Japanese voice actors I really like - Minfilia is Miyuki Sawashiro and Pipin is Nobuyuki Hiyama, both of whom are freakin' amazing seiyuu. And only recently I realized that Kan-E-Senna is Rie Tanaka. Lacus. I guess you could say she's a... SEED-seer.

[SPOILERS not hidden in SPOILERS] 2.55 Before the Fall Part 2
Imo replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I have mixed feelings about this storyline. On one hand, most of it worked for me, it was very emotional, the fight between Raubahn and Ilberd was awesome, and I like Pipin already. On the other hand, there were a few things I don't like - I'm really not a fan of the "characters sacrifice themselves one by one to slow a pursuing enemy down" cliche, because most of the time they die pointlessly and it'd be much more effective if they all faced the enemy together, and here it was no different. Also, standard Square Enix maneuver: "Look at this cool fight scene! Wouldn't it be even cooler if you could participate in it? Well, too bad!" Though really. I should say "sacrifice", because it's blatantly obvious none of the Scions are dead and we'll see them again. Was there ever any doubt? I always scratch my head when some people think that spellcasters can do anything, but melee fighters are limited by real world physics. This is Final Fantasy. All those flashing blade beams are IC. -
My RP is 99% MSQ-compatible already. Imogene is totally the person to answer to every request with a silent nod.

If someone is a jerk OOC and you don't like them, then cutting IC contact is not just okay, but it's also the only healthy thing to do. Furthermore, if they approach you, it's perfectly okay for you to ignore them or tell them you don't want to play with them. Nobody has the right to force you to RP with them against your will. What I'd do in this situation? Ignore them, and if they want to contact you IC, tell them "sorry, I don't want to play with you" in OOC tell/say. You don't have to retcon the relationship, just don't mention it anymore. It petered out.

Imogene knows the public story with Sultana's sickness and Raubahn murdering a Syndicate member, suspects something much deeper and worse has happened, and may or may not know more about the truth but keeps quiet about it. For the time being she stays away from Ul'dah and encourages her friends to do the same until things quiet down a little.

Of course she's dead (as far as we know - they might pull a "yoink, gotcha!" thing with her in 3.0 later), but her sickness is the official story fed to the public for the time being. Yeah, I figure most of the no-name/small-name Scions were arrested. As for Yda, Papalymo, Thancred, Y'Shtola and Minfilia... You don't think they're really dead, do you? I think it's blatantly obvious their "sacrifice" was a fake-out and that we'll see them again in 3.0. I'll be extremely surprised if any of them will actually be confirmed dead. -
Not as much as I'd want, which is a pity. The recent Syldra's Revenge event with killing two Primals was pretty great, and I wish I could participate in more stuff like that. Maybe I should run an event of my own. Or coordinate one with my FC.

I'm a big mecha fan, but I just don't like much how Battletechs look like. I prefer my mecha more humanoid. As for Imogene, there's only one mech that's appropriate for her - one that will showcase the dignity of a dutiful paladin in its full glory. "Come! Ryu Knight Zephyr!" -Z1eIplnvi8 "It's not cute. It's a fierce robot. :|"

i always thought of them as fantasy mexicans cos ala mhigo sounds mexican to me Considering Highlander stats? thatsracist.jpg The only way to discourage ERPers is to play a character they don't find hot. Otherwise you're gonna get those offers anyway. Just tell them "no".

Ah, Mary Sues often have anti-hero traits these days, with "flaws" such as "gets angry easily" or "anti-authoritarian rebel" or "very protective of friends" or "an angsty loner". And for male Sues especially, it seems like you have to give your character a lot of those. What makes them Sues is that those flaws never kick them in the ass - they're just there to showcase how cool the character is. The character is still always the best and always right, but in an edgy way, not a wholesome and bright way.

Is there a list of things that are acceptable? Not being rude just very curious. I did not see any rules besides the ones posted on the sticky for guides. Please post I am actually curious. There's no list, because most things are not hard and fast rules. They depend on your ability to pull them off. And from my experience, most people can't pull off a mental disorder they don't know really well. Especially schizophrenia and multiple personality syndrome.
-
Please don't give your character a mental disorder. Unless you research it really well, it tends not to go well. And even when you do, it still can.
-
OP... Judging from your reactions, you're not really here for advice. You're here for butt-pats and people telling you that your character concept is totally cool, aren't you? You have a knee-jerk defensive reaction to everyone who doesn't agree with that. Technically you can play anything you want - if other players don't like it, they can choose not to RP with you. But your character concept is so lore-breaking that almost all decent roleplayers will choose not to RP with you as soon as they learn of it. Roleplaying is all about being creative, but limitations encourage creativity, to an extent. Taking a character who's unfitting to the game world and putting them into the setting anyway is not creative, it's lazy. You can totally play a character who has an interesting, rich backstory, and who's not just a generic commoner, while staying within the setting. You can play a character who's new to it too - just play a foreigner from far away, or someone who lost her memory. There are many ways to create the character you want without taking the lore and breaking it in half.

I'm 99% sure My Immortal was written by a troll. Sure. Most of Batman fans, and a lot of his writers, consider him an unreachable mental colossus, who can beat anyone with enough preparation. And among nerds, someone who's super-smart is a bigger power fantasy than someone who's super-strong. Especially if through that brain he's able to defeat the super-strong guy. Batman has a lot of flaws, but they're the cool kinds of flaws, like being mistrusted by The Man, or his obsessive determination. Mary Sues often have those kinds of flaws - flaws that are bad on paper, but in practice their purpose is to showcase how awesome you are. Do note that we're talking about bad writers here. A good writer will create a more three-dimensional image of Batman... But they will also create a more three-dimensional image of Superman. Either character can be written good or bad. Batman has more fanboys, though. (I actually prefer Batman, despite everything that was said here.)

Villains, more than any other characters, are hard to play right. I've seen them done wrong way too often to count: poweremoting tryhard edgemasters, wannabe masterminds who aren't as smart as they think, people who get defensive when you try to foil their actions or show they have consequences. And it often ends in an OOC argument as they whine they're the one who should win and complain they're being oppressed by people playing goody-two-shoes. Between this, and the fact that I don't really like RP conflicts between PCs, I must say I don't like villain characters much. The few times I've seen them done right, they were in one of those categories: 1. Evil but not a villain - the character is a total jerk but doesn't actually do anything villainous. Not sure if it counts. 2. Amusing villain - they're either funny and silly or an over-the-top ham, but either way, fun to play with. Hard to take seriously, but fun. 3. Small-time crook - the character is a pickpocket, a swindler, or someone similar. They want your money, not your life, and will use trickery, not brute force, to get it. 4. Doomed villain - the character is played with the assumption that, in the end, they're going to lose. It's less like a player character and more an NPC antagonist in a story you're telling for other players.

I'll just pop in it say that anyone who thinks Superman is a bigger Mary Sue than Batman really hasn't been paying attention to the comic book fandom, and to writers who revere the latter to the point they might as well have a Bat-altar in their bedroom.
-
This. Without RP, the game gets boring as it's running out of content you haven't done yet. But if I wanted a pure RP environment, I'd play another game - a forum PbP or something, not a paid MMO. (I actually do, but that's for scratching a different itch.)

It's been ages since I did the Titan MSQ fight, but aren't the other people he tempers restrained prisoners? It's not like you come with a party of armed adventurers at him, which then get tempered. I don't think I agree with this "it's polite not to discuss some storyline things in open RP" stance. If it's okay to mention in FC RP, then it's okay to mention in open RP too. Everything about the game is interpreted differently by different people, and you should not have to refrain from mentioning some things in open RP just because they might ruin someone's vision of how things really have gone. If they don't agree with you? They can just ignore you and don't RP with you. This is the most important thing about RP, something not everyone remembers: if you don't like someone, just don't play with them. Pretend they don't exist. Nobody has the right to force their RP on you.
-
Yeeaahhh, I generally stay out of RP PVP because there's a lot of such people there.
-
I know you're not talking about my character. I've responded to what you said as a general statement. Because some people get the impression that those who play high-power characters do it for bragging rights, in a "my character can totally own your character" way. No good player does that. If you meet someone who does, don't RP with that person. They're bad.
-
I'm okay with everyone being equal. Do you think I'm roleplaying a powerful character because I want to look down on others and gloat about how much stronger my character is? I'm roleplaying a powerful character because I want to incorporate as much of the game into my RP as possible, instead of keeping them separate. And, more importantly, I want to play a hero, not an everyday schmuck. I leave that to people who like to play such characters, instead. Also, being able to do stuff you do in MSQ is not op. Going above that is op.
