  1. Who am I to argue with Solomon? :lol: Seriously, being completely original nowadays is rough. George Lucas himself admits a lot of his work was "borrowed" from others and how many copy his works in turn? - Best most can do is come up with a storyline they hope is enjoyable and fresh.
  2. Very nice! I really like your style. I'm so jealous of you people with artistic talent.
  3. Really I think time and days of the week in FFXI was just a crafting/gardening/magic thing. They wanted to add some in game element to it and thought having to wait an entire real life in game day was too long. Other then those three areas it has no other effect on the game as far as I know. I'm of the opinion that most of the stuff that comes out nowadays has already been done before. That applies to movies, books, and television. It can also apply to RP so people should be careful not to do something that has already been done to death.
  4. It's such a huge pet peeve of mine that "Vana'diel Time" even existed. I wish they would use GMT because it makes things so much easier.
  5. I just wanted to give a shout out to someone who has contributed a lot to the RP scene over the years on his special day! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MASON!!! I hope your birthday brings you lots of fun surprises and good memories. And cake >.>
  6. Oh the horrible lore breaking and cliches I did when I first started RP-ing! In fact, unintentionally my character was a lot like Dyterium's (Eva). Thankfully we knew each other well enough that he understood I wasn't copying him and it was just a misunderstanding (perhaps coincidence is a better word). However, that only lasted about a month because I really paid attention to what others were doing and what was acceptable. Some stuff about my character was too late to change so I just downplayed it till it became forgotten. I remember one guy made a total fool out of himself in Crystalline and wanted to "reset" his character. He was asking us all to forget we had ever met him. However, a lot of people had a problem with that so the guy just quit. Honestly I don't understand why he didn't just change his attitude and wait till people had forgotten all about what happened. After all, first impressions are often completely wrong. I guess my point is if someone really wants to fit in with a group they'll find a way to be original and still abide by the rules. Also we all made mistakes when we were first roleplaying so I'm not going to be the one to cast the proverbial first stone at a new RP'er. Being a good role model is the best thing veteran RP'ers can do. It's when the problem consistently hurts other people's storylines that it becomes an issue.
  7. One thing I learned on FFXI is that I HATE crafting on my main character. If I could go back and do FFXI again I'd get to 100 crafting on a mule first, do a craft on my main just to say I have it, and keep my inventory space to myself. Even with retainers having a lot of crafting materials and having to shift them around on a main character every time you want to craft sucks imo. If it hasn't changed I'll be forced to have at least two characters. However I will say this, even though it's a bit off topic... at the launch of FFXI you could get all crafts to 100 (the same as now in FF14). Later they decided to change this and you could only have one craft to max level. Only one person on my server has two 100 crafts because they got them both to 100 before the change. Just something to think about.
  8. My thoughts on this are that in FFXI there were only 5 starting classes. When you reached level 30 you could go unlock Advanced Jobs. I'm wondering if those are going to be the Advance Jobs in FFXIV. Most of the jobs they have right now seem like very basic jobs or jobs that would be excellent support for a more Advanced Class. Another thing that makes me think this could be the case is that fishing in FFXIV is now horrible if you're below level 20. This is an anti-RMT measure and I think it makes sense that they would carry that tactic over to FFXIV. Why solve a problem and then ditch what you learned? >.> This is only conjecture, of course, but I do think it might have some merit. BTW, if they do add Fencer I'm so reprising my old FFXI character as an alt. I made her a Red Mage because it was the closest thing, but I wanted Fencing to only be her hobby and not have combat be a huge part of her storyline.
  9. Since it seems like this thread discussion has ended, I'll do as Castiel suggests :lol:
  10. If you have too many people on a server the lag gets really bad. Nothing like not being able to move your character for 10 minutes because there are too many people next to you :roll: Also a lower populated server leaves more room for later growth. If the servers get too populated SE puts a cap on them so new people can't join. Say you have a friend in the future who wants to play with you but oops... server is capped... sorry.
  11. A lot of things are still being discussed, but just to get an overview of what we have so far I made a short list. Please let me know if anything is missing or needs to be amended. Server Selection: Server selection will take place either Open Beta or when the server lists are announced. Possible methods of selecting the server include, but is not limited to: 1. Creating a migration linkshell within Final Fantasy XI. 2. Popular vote if servers are able to be selected during Open Beta by forums, ventrillo, or instant message. 3. Monopoly if more roleplayers end up on a particular server then any other during Open Beta. 4. Popular vote if servers are able to be selected at the Time of the Game's Release by forums, ventrillo, or instant message. 5. Chronologically or alphabetically during either Open Beta or the Time of the Game's Release (server population pending). Back Up Plans: In the event that the server selection is at random these methods of joining the group may be enacted: 1. Everyone must keep re-rolling their character until they land on the correct server. Please observe this only worked in FFXI for the first character and once a second character was created the server selection could not be changed. 2. World Passes will be distributed to those who cannot join the Roleplaying server. A community effort will be made to ensure all those who want a World Pass receive one. However, a certain amount of patience is required for those who have to wait for a World Pass and it is to be understood the full amount of the World Pass must be paid back to the community. Thoughts/comments/questions/concerns?
  12. Hope everyone had a fun 4th and Happy Birthday Eltharian! My tribute to America gone awry... I made a funfetti cake for after our family cookout this morning and the results were terrible. I accidentally grabbed the wrong scissors so when I opened the icing it cut in a funny way. All the icing poured out and between the second "p" and the "y" it was so bad I had to take all the frosting off that area. By the time I got to the stars I was so exasperated I just stuck them on there :lol: At least the cake itself tasted really great and even Zane liked it and he's picky about food :approve: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a205/pirateemmalea/DSCI1615.jpg
  13. This is exactly what I was trying to get across until my daughter got sick. Thank you so much for clarifying that for everyone because I had a hunch I didn't do such a great job of it :lol: My main point with the Nobuaki statement is that he says world selection is not ready "yet" and that it was just "for the time being". This suggests to me that they have some sort of world selection in the making and that it's just not finished yet. Yeah, he is talking about the Beta but why would they have a feature in the Beta such as that and take it out in the final release? - Maybe I'm totally wrong about that but it's just a thought. I really like this idea and I think it's worth giving some thought to. I think this is something we could discuss at length a bit later. World passes might be an option for us but again my concern is the cost. From what my significant other remembers at the start of FFXI it was 500 gil for a world pass and went up as the server increased in size. Sure, it doesn't sound like a lot but for a starting character it kinda is ^^;; We could farm this up as a community and ask everyone who gets a pass to pay the group back when they earn that amount. However, there are pros and cons to that situation we would have to weigh as a group.
  14. Since the thread has had 51 views, 17 votes, and only 2 responses I did a bit of digging to help shed some light on the subject. I found two articles that related to server selection. The first was an old article posted on January 23, 2010 and pretty stated server selection at the start of the game wouldn't be possible. The text in red is the actual question and answer while the text in black below it is the authors musings. http://www.eorzeapedia.com/2010/01/23/dengeki-games-interview-highlights-and-commentary/ ï¼±ï¼What can you tell us about the transition from the Beta to the final version or about world transfers in general? Aï¼Once service starts, we want to make it so you can move along with the friends you make during the Beta to the same world. As for world transfers, that may be a possibility in the future, with some limitations probably. Square Enix really messed up server selection the first time around with XI. You simply have to be able to play (from the very start) with existing friends. Frankly, this is even more critical this time around where players will almost certainly be moving en masse from XI. I expect this to be addressed from the very beginning, and not to limited to only those who beta test, as this suggests. June 2, 2010 Nobuaki Komoto stated, however, that while you couldn't select servers for the Beta at the moment it was something they were working towards. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/finalfantasy14/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-55032471&pid=960613 Unfortunately, a World selection feature will not yet be available. We understand the inconvenience this causes, as many of you no doubt wish to create characters on the least-populated Worlds or on the same Worlds as your friends. For now we apologize for not having this option ready, and ask for your understanding and patience for the time being. It was also stated in several articles I read that people you start the Beta with are people you will definitely be able to start the game with. After all, how can you reserve a name during Beta if they're going to mix up the servers again? - It's logical to assume all the server names will stay the same OR the characters on a Beta Server will be transferred to a server with a new name. Since I have no doubt a majority of us will want to play in the Beta, this is the time when we need to select a server. If there is no server selection available at that time (which I doubt considering Nobuaki Komoto's statement) then the server which the most roleplayers end up on will no doubt become the server everyone will start on. A natural monopoly? :lol: At least during Beta no one is going out of their way to pre-order the game, going all the way out to get it (I have no doubt I will be up early and ready to get my copy that day), paying money... and then twiddling their thumbs while the server selection is debated. People can wait a day during Beta for the selection * Sorry if this post seems curt but my daughter is sick so I ended up getting rushed a bit ^^;;
  15. Since I have very little to do at the moment I went ahead and posted a thread covering the "What If's?" we've discussed. I also put up a poll to make sure everything we discussed in this thread up to this point is agreed upon. If you have any further concerns about server selection please continue to post here. However, if you are posing a "What if?" scenario please post it in the new thread. Thank you ^^
  16. Server Selection Part 2: "What if's?" As a community we have discussed at length our official stance on selecting a server. It seems we are in agreement about starting on a Roleplay specific server over a Non-Roleplay server given the possibility. Just to make sure this is what the majority has agreed upon I will put up a poll in this post so we can get a show of hands on the subject once and for all. However, if you have any additional thoughts on the subject of server selection please post in the appropriate thread. "What if's?" Now that is well underway to being finished, we can focus on and plan for any eventualities that may occur. Several people have already posted "What if?" situations on the forums that need addressing and while they are excellent thoughts it seems we're barely scratching the surface of the issue. Below is a list of "What if?" situations members have voiced that we as a community must address. Please feel free to add any other concerns you can think of for discussion. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. How do we select a server if the names have not been released yet? 2. What if the server selection is random? 3. What if Friend Passes for server selections are more expensive then a starting character can afford? 4. What if SE designates more than one RP server? 5. What if we end up with more RP'ers then the server can handle? 6. What if due to some conflict/misunderstanding/confusion/etc one more more guilds ends up on different servers? 7. What if our promotional efforts don't work and we fail to mobilize Roleplayers to our servers? 8. What if we end up on a server that has a bias against Roleplayers? 9. What if a significant amount of Roleplayers cannot convince their friends to join the same server we select as a group? -----------------------------------------------------------------
  17. Don't give them ideas! They're just evil enough to do that :cry: ... Plus they'll probably make the appointment time for JP midnight :roll:
  18. My guess is that they gave that set the goggles to off set the fact a lot of the hardcore players that can afford it (and some that can't) will go for the extra week of playtime. For $75 it better last forever and also bring you freshly squeezed juice for breakfast
  19. Not to derail the topic but I like the mixed atmosphere too. I think when Japanese players started putting up {English} {No, thanks} it made English speakers wonder why and change some of their attitudes. People are a lot more polite in FFXI then they are in WoW and I think a lot of it has to do with the Japanese. I think they taught us how to act politely online and take our jobs seriously while we taught them not to be quite so xenophobic. As for the language barrier, the auto-translate usually does a pretty good job as long as the person you're talking to is semi-intelligent. I had one Japanese white mage in a group while we were doing the airship fight and they couldn't cast paralyna even when we auto-translated it a million times. I've also had English white mages do the same thing no matter how many times you ask. On the other hand I've had great parties with Japanese people who used auto-translate and broken English which turned out to be really fun And yes, Japanese people RP ^^ /end rant ^^;;
  20. Yay! So excited! I think Zane and I are going to just update his PC a bit and then buy one other computer so we can both play at the same time. We have a ps3 and he'll probably start playing on that in March because he prefers that version. Snazzy new computer on loan for me though *Ninja edit Wow... $3 for per alt. That's kinda a lot I was hoping for my main character and three others but I might have to trim it down to two.
  21. Very nice job, Kier! It looks amazing. Thanks to you both for such an awesome job
  22. Please, please no one vote for going to the Sephiroth server if there is one. It will be an entire server of people with lots of X's at the beginning and end of their names (j/k btw.... sorta ^^; ) As for server size, I just don't want to be anywhere that's so crowded I can't move or see people Outright I don't like RP servers. They're usually breeding grounds for terrible roleplay and roleplaying habits. Even if Square makes up some rules for what is and isn't acceptable it's going to be difficult for them to enforce it. Plus I never would have roleplayed if I wouldn't have met Dyterium OOC first. I never even considered RP in a MMO until I met him and I decided to join before I'd even seen what he was like IC. Just because someone has never RP'ed doesn't mean they won't try it if they know someone who can help them along. That aside though, if there is an RP server it would be impolite to start a RP coalition on a non-RP server. Instead of people thinking "Wow... it's awesome they're RP-ing and I might try that" they end up thinking "What jerks/idiots to come on an non-RP server and flood the chat". If there is a RP server, I think if people want to join the coalition they need to agree to the server rules, their guild rules and the RPC rules. Finally, just to bring up two last points... 1. It may be impossible to unite all the RP'ers under one server. I know there has to be *someone* out there who doesn't like the coalition and will try to start their own version on a different server then ours. How are we going to handle them in a way that won't create drama but also make us look like the more attractive group to join? 2. What about people who have real life friends or guilds/linkshells who plan to play FF14 but don't want to RP? A lot of them might not join if their friends don't start on the same server or they might be dissuaded if RP'ers won't hang out with their non-RP friends to level/complete missions/etc.
  23. Sondra watched as one by one the group began to disperse as she crossed the tavern room floor. She approached the remaining few still seated, held up the pitcher of rum and smiled politely, "Would anyone care for a glass of the house favorite or perhaps one last refill?"
  24. Sondra offered a small smile in exchange as she watched the man step away from the bar. For a moment she pondered where someone like that could have come from. He definitely didn't look like anyone from the navy or a pirate. Perhaps Ul'dah but she had heard people from there were uneducated brutes who enjoyed nothing more then spilling blood in the arena. His mannerisms and eyes were too kind to be a ruthless killer in her opinion... but where did all the cuts on his face came from? Replacing the cap on the bottle, she turned and put it back on the dusty shelf from whence it came. With a soft sigh she closed her eyes momentarily and paused where she stood. Sin, huh? - Well, aren't we all..? Opening her eyes once more, she returned to the counter to retrieve a fresh pitcher of rum. I'll just offer those ladies one last drink and get home before anyone finds out I was missing.
  25. Sondra watched the satisfied expression cross the mans face as he drank and placed the glass back completely empty on the bar in front of him. Opening the bottle once more, she poured another drink nearly to the rim and smiled, "Well, as my most interesting customer of the day take one on the house. Now if you'll excuse me I need to make sure those ladies drinks stay full. Don't hesitate to ask me if you need anything though Mister...?" She raised her eyebrow expectantly wondering what kind of name a person such as he would give.
