3.1 new Hairstyles! (including contest winners)
Greybarren replied to Zelmanov's topic in FFXIV News
Admittedly, the male hairstyle came out much better than I thought it would. Moved to a favorite for me. -

balmung Fist of Rhalgr looking for contacts!
Greybarren replied to Rusty Knight's topic in Chronicled Connections
Feel free to poke me on Tristram Greythorne when you have the chance. Older highlander, like you. Consummate drifter and woodman of sorts, so I can justify him just about anywhere. And I've been needing to make more connections myself, so let's help each other out. -
Super nerd jokes are always fun! Let's have a cheer! ["hip","hip"] ~~ Why do Java developers always need glasses? Because they can't C#. ~~ How do you tell an introverted programmer from an extroverted programmer? The extroverted programmer will be looking at your shoes. ~~ How many programmers does it take to change a lightbulb? None. That's a hardware problem. ~~

Dear lord ... I remember that from when I was first looking into FFXIV. @.@

As a fellow lurker, Welcome! \o/ *slithers back under the couch* @.@

*Vigorously points at in agreement* Add me to this camp. A lot of them looked neat, yes, but I didn't honestly see any styles I would want for any of my characters. However, I also realize that I prefer a Western aesthetic, and that doesn't really endear me to much of what's being offered *shrug* I DID like the idea of acccents/hairbands/flowers/clips/et al. changing color as the accent color changes, though. Also in that camp with you guys. Anyone bring stuff to make s'mores? I feel adding more "normalized" hairstyles will help fill the other end of the visual gradient, add more variety to the PCs. There's something to be said for simplicity, especially when used to balance complexity. I'm ... really disappointed with both sets, honestly. But as far as the votes go ... the #25 "Siefer" cut for the males and the #3 "Almost Garnet" cut would be my choices.

Byz6960tWxQ This game has a excellent soundtrack, and it's part of my "at work" of playlist. The whole OST is really worth a listen. Enjoy!

characters that seemingly break lore (but don't)
Greybarren replied to Khoure's topic in RP Discussion
The lore and battle teams have an unfortunate history of coming into conflict in XIV -- the moving of elemental offensive magic to Thaumaturgy from Conjury is one such example that they've admitted to. I think it's safe to say that the battle team will sometimes say, "These are WHM Job skills because they'd be OP if they could be cross-classed or available to CNJ," and then the lore team says, "Welp, time to sweep that under the rug." I'm a big supporter of "if the game says you can, you should be able to do so," which is why I advocate different approaches to using Succor or, indeed, using spells that the game classifies as Succor in a way that makes them not Succor. If your character's a skilled conjuror, surely they've created some spells of their own, perhaps some to keep people in the fight with less effort (Regen)? That big explosion of light you do (Holy)? Why, that's just a lightning-aspected spell (since we know that conjurers, per lore, have access to elemental magic). On the black mage side, that's not the "Flare" of the War of the Magi, it's just a customized, augmented fire spell. To paraphrase a common (and silly, when you think about it) saying, when the lore team closes a door, they open a window. XIV really doesn't ban much of anything, and even when it bans one approach, others still exist, ready to be employed by the enterprising RPer. This is the perfect point. I personally believe that SE keeps the lore really loosely defined to keep one of the big visions behind at least the original final fantasy alive. The whole the player being in control of the story, though this could only be done to an extent since there still needs to be some sort of story for the player to follow. They want the player to have an extent of control over what goes on in the game. Though it is much harder to accomplish in a mmo setting I still think they try their best to stick with it. Give the player enough information to be able to create a character off of. Though more on topic there is a good chance of some people who would try to harass you about breaking the lore, since some people tend to take anything a character says about themselves as what their character is saying is 100% true. They get so caught up in telling people off about how they are a lore breaker they don't really take the time to think that there are other factors contributing to why they are claiming that point. If it's something your character would do, go for it. Hopefully you find a lot of gullible people to believe her. I mean S'imba is at least gullible enough to fall for most anything someone claims to be. Well, again. Ami would never just outright call herself a White Mage. It's plainly what I call her, because that's what I associate her with. Fits the character. I don't think she ever gives herself a title as such other than 'a gifted healer.' Perhaps if this helps, your character Ami is of the White Mage archetype, but not the class/job. Your character fits the mold by OOC description, but since she never calls herself that ICly this type of think would seem to apply in my head. My own character is a similar case. Tristram's archetype is easily "woodsman" or "ranger", but when IC the best representation is botanist. ICly he would never call himself a botanist nor is he a member of that guild, but class works of his IC appearance most of the time. I've had the viewpoint of a disconnect of roleplay vs. mechanics, so archetypes fit better into this sort of descriptive thing for myself. At the end of the day though, we all handle the lore and/or mechanics with some creative license to get our characters where we want them to be. And it's your character, no one can take that from you. Those that enjoy roleplaying with your character as well as those that discover they enjoy roleplaying will do so. Those what don't, well not really that big of thing if they don't RP with you ... they aren't there to be part of your characters story, are they? P.S. - I think potato sacks are hawt, but I have a thing for hobos. -
My first foray into RPGs ever? Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord Old scroll dungeon scrolling game, wherein you assemble a party of adventurers to get to the bottom of a many leveled maze. Stats were randomly generated with point assignments, precious artifacts like the Cuisinart Blade, and terrible foes like Vorpal Bunnies. I can still play this for hours on the emulator, and still do have some of the recently revived games my Playstation. This is what got me hooked on exploring, killing monsters, and "leveling up". This was my gateway drug into Might and Magic II when I finally got my Sega Genesis. My first story RPG on console? Shining Force II Tactical RPG, but I was blown away there actual STORY and CHARACTERS. It's not a deep game by any means, but dang ... I rented this one over and over and over again. Found all the secret characters and the fairy battle. But I didn't keep playing for stuff, I kept playing for story, to answer "What happens next!?" Funny thing, it's kinda the red-headed step child of the Shining Series as I sadly discovered later, and really couldn't play the others as this one set my expectations on the series. This game always has a special place in my heart for being my first story RPG. Its the game that eventually brought me to Final Fantasy and many, many others. These were the games I could get lost in and would love to experience for the first time again.

I. Basic Info Characters:Tristram Greythorne Primary character:Tristram Greythorne Linkshells:Open Roleplay Primary RP linkshell:None II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Medium: Not in IC at all times or what I may be doing on the character avatar may at times not be representative of the character itself (PvE gameplay, leveling other classes, Raiding, etc.) When in doubt, please ask. I will not maintain an extensive character wiki/bio, nor will I chat openly about all the backstory details of a characer. I much prefer to roleplay those discoveries and reveals out than learn about them OOCly. Views on RP combat and injuries: Preferred style is freeform emote, though I will use simple /random based combat from time to time. More complicated /random or dice based execution will require an OOC converstion. As this is not a PvP focused game, I feel it is inappropriate to for use of RP combat within this medium. RP combat presentation will likely be a theatrical style, based in realism but with embellishments for the sake of entertainment/storytelling. Injuries will happen, and are an expected consquence of RP combat/action. I use a natural time to heal for most untreated or conventionally treated injuries for my character. Magic/alchemy may expedite or not, to be decided on a case by case basis. Permanent injuries and death to my character may occur at my consent only, and I extend the same respect to others. Views on IC romance: If it makes sense for the character, perhaps. My own personal situations in real life will dictate if my character will engage in these interactions or not. I generally favor some OOC communication about the characters involved once it looks like their stories may progress in that direction to a serious or involved degree. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Family, pre-built friendships, nemisis, rivals, apprentices, exes, etc: Talk to me, I'm pretty willing to at least consider most ideas. Views on lore: My view on lore is best described as foundational. It is required to build the characters we play and interact with them in the world. However, it is built upon through interactions or through assumptions we have to make as roleplayers to execute the concepts we desire to play. The farther away from lore you get, the more likely is likely to not hold up in the setting we interact with. In short, I generally aim to obey the lore, but recognize there are areas where we need to utilize our own creative license. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): Say, emote, shout are pretty conventially viewed for open RP. Yes, I will often combine speech in an emote if actions is executed while talking. Party for roleplay is fine for representing conversations that can't be overheard or need additional privacy. Doing all RP in party for the simple sake of being closed/controlled is not something I seek to do or am very fond of. III. Other Info Country:United States Timezone:UTC−04:00 Contact info:Coming soon. [glow=blue]~Special announcements can be found in the posts below~[/glow]

I don't play the game with nameplates. So yes, I could very well breeze by your character without even a nod. Nameplates are just too much visual clutter for me and honestly, removing them makes the game feel more immersive. Melodrama. Sometimes, I'm just a sucker for it because HEY, it's all pretend anywho and it can be fun in the right amounts at the right time. While I am not a grammar nazi nor perfect at it in any sense, I cannot stand to be involved in RP where the other person seems incapable of capitalizing the personal pronoun "I". Everything else could be perfect about RPing with this person: deep character, awesome plot, etc. But that thing ... that one lack of effort will drive me away from RPing with the player. I "need" to watch RP in the open world sometimes before just walking in. Especially on new characters. It's like getting my bearings in a new car, in a way.

And I remember you from TESO-RP. (Don't worry, in the good way.) Saw your post in the other thread but didn't want derail. Here's to happy landings and not dealing with mega-server instancing anymore! Just for you: Thank you to everyone else for the warm welcome. Looks like I have some names to keep an eye out for while Tristram drifts about.

Getting into Balmung - Not Happening Indefinitely.
Greybarren replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
That's exactly how I got onto Balmung from Diabolos, if any additional confirmation is needed. Did it on a Saturday when new character creation was closed for the server. -
Hello folks! Suppose it's time to stop lurking about site ... and staring at things and sniffing hair ... @.@ I've been a long time RPer in electronic games, first cutting my teeth all the way back in MUDs. From EQ to WoW to EvE to ESO and now ... here! \o/ Finally done with the PvE bits of the game and looking to make some new connections among you roleplayer folks. I have the general idea for my character down, so time to start getting out there to stretch old brain muscles. Always feel free to poke me here, Enjin, or in game on my character. Until our paths cross one way or the other.

I'd be interested in hopping into this. I'll be sure to give one of your leaders a poke for an invite or waiting list slot.
