  1. Yeah I guess I'll bite. Servers are down for maintenance anyway. 1. Elezen Name: Uther Skystrider (birth name Uther Fortemps) Elezen clan: Ishgardian Wildwood - Not concerned with your "forestborn" nonsense. Gender: Male Timezone: It doesn't matter. I work a rotating schedule so no hours are off limits. Looking for?: Nothing. I've got a solid LS/FC with really satisfying RP. I'd love to branch out and do some open RP though. I like interacting with new characters. Post a link to wiki if you have one beneath: It's in the signature, but sure, why not. Here ya go. 2. Does your character fit the 'common' lore of elezen or are they singular? Uther fits into the lore. Intensively so. He might as well be an NPC in some cases. However, it's worth noting that the lore I've chosen for him to fit into isn't something too often explored with roleplayers. He's Ishgardian. Like most Ishgardians he's Elezen, he's affiliated with a High House, he's a dragoon, and he's a follower of Halone. If you ran into him in Coerthas, you might confuse him with a quest giver. That being said, I think his back story and origin are sufficient enough to separate him from the pack. 3. What are your Rp limits, if any? I don't do ERP. At all. Ever. I'm not a huge fan of combat RP, but I don't actively avoid it either. I enjoy out-in-the-world adventure RP and dungeon RP. I try to avoid IC romance, as it tends to get over-dramatic and goofy IC or it carries over to OOC which is bad. I'm not my character. I just control my character. Lore is also a big limiting factor for me. Lore-breaking is a huge "no no". Slight lore-bending is as far as I'll go, and even then it's just a matter of being understanding and letting things slide. I do notice when lore is broken and it's a little frustrating. Lore is essentially the rule book we've all agreed to play by. So flat-out breaking it is a big :dodgy: as far as I'm concerned. I won't avoid someone if they denounce naming conventions or stretch their story a bit as long as it fits within the general rules of the game and doesn't openly contradict anything established by SE.

    Ahoy

Welcome to the community! We're usually a pretty friendly bunch. Feel free to make yourself at home. Ask if you have any questions.
  3. Uther is proud, he's morally stubborn, and he's very reluctant to change his methods to adapt to a modern world. He's used to the "old ways" of Ishgard, and doesn't understand that war against the Empire is a completely different situation than war against dragons. He sees the world in black and white, and isn't comfortable dealing with gray areas, but he's slowly starting to open his eyes to a world that isn't separated into simply "good" and "evil". Physically, he's a grand specimen of the sophisticated warrior archetype, though he's a bit short by Elezen standards. He stands at only 6'6, where as most seem to be 6'8-7'0.
  4. Bahamut destroyed most of Limsa, Gridania, and the outer parts of Ul'dah. Along with some senseless destruction scattered throughout the continent. His attack also somehow put Coerthas in eternal winter, or at least it has been since the attack, but I don't really know exactly how the two are connected. Not sure about the Garlean Empire, but I would imagine minimal destruction because the epicenter was Mor Dhona which is kind of in the center of Eorzea. A lot of people choose to RP it different ways, myself and a great deal of the people I personally RP with tend to see it in a very realistic way. This is essentially a recovering world. Borderline post-apocalyptic. Cities were destroyed, homes were lost, businesses and agriculture decimated, thousands died. Everyone is kind of struggling to survive and rebuild still. Everyone knows about the war with the Empire, and everyone saw them pull the moon from the sky. The details might be a little foggy and subject to rumor, but when a giant dragon fire-bombs your house immediately after the moon comes down from the sky during a battle with the Empire, you can kind of put the pieces together yourself. As for RPing someone who didn't take the time skip. I think this is the route the majority is taking, as it adds potential for a bit of extra back story for the past five years. I played 1.0 very little and didn't take part in RP, so I made a character up for ARR who didn't take the time skip. There's plenty of pros and cons for taking or passing on the time skip. It's really up to you. One thing to note though is that legacy players received in-game upper back tattoos, denoting that they're time skippers. I don't think anyone will care if you RP the time skip without one, but it's something to think about. In the end, it's totally up to you whether you want to time skip or not.
  5. Can't help but notice the character's surname is Zoso. Led Zeppelin reference? ...Also this,
  6. Not a problem! I totally understand. Send me a PM and we'll work it out.
  7. Sure, that makes sense. Bahamut is technically a Dragon King, and if you're going to take out a Dragon King, you might as well learn from the professional dragon killers. As for meeting a real dragoon. They're rare to find outside of Coerthas. I don't know if you're thinking of making up a fake dragoon or tying the story in with another player, but there are at least three Ishgardian Dragoons that I know of out there in the Balmung RPC, myself included, if you're considering going that route. I can't speak for the others, but I don't mind having Uther mentioned in someone's back story at all. So if that's up your alley, feel free to throw me a PM. Of course I won't be offended if that's not something you're interested in doing. Happy to help in any way I can.
  8. Well, the idea of Ishgard opening its gates is pretty much an inevitability, as Dogberry pointed out. By both lore and gameplay standards. They're freezing, they're dying, and their war is only getting worse. Plus, people want to see more content for it. It's definitely possible for someone to have a dream of becoming a dragoon, though I wouldn't start calling myself one personally until the gates officially open. There's no problem with saying like "I spent a lot of time in Coerthas, trying to make connections, in hopes that they'll let me into Ishgard. I picked up a lot of useful skills along the way." etc etc. But yes, it's definitely possible to one day be a real dragoon. The game's lore just hasn't allowed it yet for those not of Ishgardian blood. The real question you have to ask yourself (or he has to ask himself) is why the character wants to be a dragoon. Sure, it's sweet to jump around on dragons and whatever, but the actual dragoons aren't going to freely give their skills out to someone who isn't a follower of Halone or has no real stake in their war. It's just something to think about. I hope your friend finds some stable ground to stand on as far as lore is concerned. It sounds like this character would be interesting for mine to RP with once he's got his background set up. I'm always open for some interesting takes on the dragoon class in RP. (Though I'm temporarily shying away from RP a little bit, as I'm still waiting on my Phial of Fantasia so I can race change. Don't want to confuse people.) You mentioned earlier about real dragoons seeing it as a bastardization of their art form. Uther is a very proud Ishgardian Dragoon, but he also recognizes talent when he sees it. I imagine if he saw Dogberry in combat, his response would be along the lines of:
  9. Regarding the special dragoon thing. That's why I said you can't have all the special skills dragoons have without being chosen by the Eye. That's what I was referring to. There are plenty of "dragoons" all over the place in Coerthas. Many of which don't even use lances. There's a quest where you have to talk to some dragoons near Behemoth's Dominion and they have chainmail, swords, and shields. I may not have made that clear. I was sleep deprived and rambling. Also, Ishgard doesn't like foreigners. As for this opening itself up thing, I heard that somewhere too, but I find it unlikely because, well, quest there a bit and see how eager they are to let foreigners into their ranks. They won't even talk to my character and he's supposed to be a super awesome special snowflake according to the main plot line. So there is some piece of lore out there claiming they're training people up, but I think that's square's half-assed attempt at getting dragoons to make sense in a multiplayer world. I've never so much as seen a miqo'te NPC in Coerthas, let alone seen miqo'te dragoons. But I'm not here to rain on parades. If someone can make it work, they're at liberty to try for sure. I'm just letting everyone know that the Ishgard lore is a pretty tight net and there's not much room for imagination there. I've pretty much had to turn my character into a quest NPC to make him work. Not everyone's as lore-intensive as I am, and that's totally fine, but the character should at least make sense. I won't go around calling people out for stretching the lore a bit, but I am opposed to flat out breaking it.
  10. Not to the level of the dragoon job. The game does a poor job translating the story line into multiplayer interaction. The only way to do all of the crazy awesome dragoon skills is to be chosen by the Eye. According to the main dragoon story line, you're the only outsider chosen by the Eye since ever. So unless you're born in Ishgard it's going to be hard to convince me IC that you are what you say you are. Want to be really good at using a lance and just play the dragoon class because it's the natural progression from lancer? Fine by me. Want to tell me you're an actual dragoon but you're not from Ishgard? That's going to quirk some eyebrows. Especially since OOC I'm completely obsessed with Ishgard lore, and IC I RP a born-and-bred knight of noble blood from one of the four High Houses of the city-state. Just a fair warning. Play what you want, but be able to back it up for when the Lore Police show up.
  11. I don't understand it either. I originally built Uther so that if the option ever arose, I could switch him to Elezen or Highlander at the drop of a hat if I so chose. I love Elezen culture (mainly all of the classy-yet-badass Ishgard knights), and it's always been one of my favorite races. I had never played one up to this point because I hate being the tallest guy in the room. Luckily for me, Misericorde is made primarily of giants, so I finally decided to make the switch. Was even considering a name change if the option presented itself. I'm not dying for one and I like my name, but I'd be lying if I said I don't like the idea of "Aronnax Fortemps" as well. Maybe there should be a "No <3 for Male Elezen?" thread, but personally I like being an underpopulated race. Makes me feel all special.
  12. That's a pretty broad statement. Black Mage gear, while neat looking, isn't that iconic. Vivi's gear from FFIX is the more iconic Black Mage look for the series in my opinion. Regardless, paladin gear is almost always white, dragoon gear is almost always a dark violet/midnight blue. Plus, I'll use dragoon as an example because it's the class I know the most about, the drachenmail armor is essentially a religious artifact for the people of Ishgard. Being able to dye it just seems wrong from a lore standpoint. I'm all for dying anything you want as long as it isn't AF. For every class the AF is supposed to be an honor to have and it doesn't make much sense to me IC or OOC to just start slapping other colors on there. That's just me, but I wouldn't want to see it. Plus we already have the ability to stick a Free Company logo on the AF. Dye whatever you want, but lets leave the iconic sets iconic. Don't ruin the classics. It's like turning Led Zeppelin's Kashmir into Puff Daddy's Come With Me. It might feel like an awesome new spin on something familiar and well-known at the time, but in the end it's pretty awful and everyone just kind of wishes it never happened. Of course this is strictly my opinion, and people will disagree, but I'm just throwing it out there.
  13. Call me a purist, but this would really upset me. A lot of the AF sets are iconic to the Final Fantasy series. I'd be pretty annoyed to see a red Dragoon set or a green Paladin set. It would ruin the job for me a bit. That's just me though.
  14. Hey, thanks! Outside of Misericorde, I haven't gotten much feedback on the choice. I agree, there need to be more male Elezen, plus it just seemed to fit better with his backstory.
  15. I have to post every time I see this thread. Being born and raised in Coerthas, I felt this was an appropriate homecoming song for Uther. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLq8KZQ0L_8 Plus it's Sabbath, so it's already pretty rad.
  16. Like the Restaurant music from Seinfeld?
  17. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=2314 This is the thread you're looking for. I don't feel a single song can define a character by any stretch of the imagination. But since I'm bored, here's one I like a lot for Uther. Specifically the line, "Oh to ride the wind To tread the air above the din"
  18. "Nay" said Sir Lancelot "...For once shamed may never be recovered."
  19. Hm it seems to be time based yeah. Okay thanks. I'll confirm this. It is time based. I can't say exactly how long because I don't know, but I always wait about 5-10 minutes before posting again just to avoid the issue. Seems to work.
  20. I had to skim this because I'm in a bit of a rush right now, but if you have any questions about lore or simply want some character feedback, by all means send me a PM and I'll get back to you as fast as humanly possible. EDIT: For guidelines on how to maximize RP, I'd suggest checking the RP Handbook (or whatever it's called) that we have on our site. If you can't seem to think of a good idea for a character and want to see what the rest of us have done, you can check the RPC Library on our wiki page as Tirra pointed out earlier.

    Ishgard

It's multiracial to a point. They've been isolated for a long long time, so you're not going to find many (if any) Miqo'te there, for instance, because their race showed up a little late in the world's history. Hellsguard I'd have to check, but given their ties to Ul'dah and the desert, I'd say "no". The city-state is mostly Elezen and Hyur, with a few others kind of sprinkled in scarcely. Most of what I know from Ishgard in ARR is hearsay (albeit, very reliable hearsay) because my own character hasn't made it that far yet, thanks to error 1017. My area of expertise is 1.0, but I'll be sure to get back to you on the Hellsguard situation though.

    Ishgard

That's actually not a bad idea at all. Unfortunately, I'll be stepping out for work soon, but I'll be sure to follow up on this as soon as I can.

    Ishgard

I know a great deal about Ishgard. My main lived there from birth until a few days before the Calamity, and I've done quite a lot of research on Ishgard and their Dragoons in order to make his story solid. If you have any questions, kindly shoot them my way and I'll be sure to answer them.
