Ah I see, so they grow horns instead of adulthood, and otherwise are chosen when being children. Probably rather young considering E-Ruhn Senna's age.. Interesting theory on their race of origin.
-
Yes, I understand that they are not a race, and mostly hyur (confirmation that it's not only hyur now, correct?).. So, if they do not grow horn at birth, and so are not chosen directly at birth by being gifted like little jedi would be with the Force, then when are they chosen by elementals? It can happen anytime? And that before they get too old, right, so that they keep their children bodies?

Hello all, I have been desperately trying to get into parties to run Bahamut's Coil, mostly because it looks like a cool instance, and more importantly because the plot looks extremely intriguing and full of answers of many sorts. It's probably one of the dungeons that makes me eager to learn all of its secrets. The main issue is that it's almost impossible to get into it through DF, and I just don't really feel like running it unsynced. It's already a piece of cake with out overpimped stuff and I would love not to fall totally asleep while doing it, even if some parts seem challenging enough still... Anyway, even not through DF, it's a chore to organize. And so I wondered if there are some people too that never did it and would be interested to run it as well, or just other folks that have done it and would like to do it again with people that never did like me? Would it be possible for us to organize some runs like that, for example doing part 1 one day, then part 2 the other day, etc? Or split it into even smaller entities, i'm fine with it too! What do you think?

balmung Miqo'te Mage looking to meet and greet.
Valence replied to Jihl'a's topic in Chronicled Connections
Feel free to approach. I have a total scatterbrain of a character that loves pretty much everything that Thaliak would love. -
Alright, so I have read Sounssy's links on padjal lore (thanks!) to begin with. The question I am trying to figure out currently is how does it manifests itself for the first time? Do padjals are all born with horns visible as toddlers? When are people able to tell they are not only hearers, but also blessed with the padjal abilities (not counting horns, but it's related)? What do we know about that? It would seem that recent lore additions pointed that not only hyur can be, but also other races right? Or did I read that wrong ?

From what I have gathered around the Mongrel character of the MSQ, and while there is definitely a colossal amount of racial discrimination over Eorzea (Wildwoods vs Duskwights, Uldans vs refugees or Ala Mighans, or more generally different ethnies confronted to issues and local conflicts and conveniently bringing the blame to the other one...), the Mongrel being a black sheep also has a lot to do with the social ladder situation she was in. She is the child of a noble heir and a commoner housemaid. This is a huge part of the issue, and is considered highly unproper. The fact that she shows physical traits of both races is just the visual manifestation of the "sin" her parents did. The father got away with it due to his station, and is forgiven his excesses, and the mother thrown into the street with the embarassing child. The problem in very regimented societies with rigid castes is that everything that comes to threaten the social order is systematically cast out. And more importantly, everything must have its place, and remain as it is supposed to be. Something that is by definition out of that order of things, with no real existence, often tends to be equated to a non entity. The Mongrel is treated exactly like that: an embarassing non entity nobody but the disenfrenchised want to deal with. It can bring good RP angles I think.

Personally, i'm not blaming the QA, quite the contrary.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Valence replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
- People not waiting for the party to be ready before engaging anything. Especially tanks that want to rush dungeons and mass aggro everything, not even checking if the heal is following. Then blaming the heal when LoS is lost, or just not ready. - DPS in no-brain mode entering extreme instances like if it was going to be a cruise, and refusing to play by the mechanics, leading to successive wipes (What's a mechanic? Certainly not just a heal/tank obscure gimmick... In any case a mechanic sure can fix your car, but not your party...). Or more generally, people coming into extreme modes and somehow thinking that they should win it at the first few trials... - Tanks playing the spoilt brats because they have instant queue access due to the sheer lack of them, then leaving at the smallest inconvenience. - Being bullied by a group of players when I ran that 2.5 ascian trial with a tank buster ability... Starting the fight with snarky remarks like "ogod we gonna lose, new players here", "we should just abandon". Actually managing the fight fine, but people dying due to bad AoE dodging, and tanks dying to the tank buster. Calling me out for not even being able to manage a tank buster, that I am the worst heal they ever saw, that I should spare the raiding community from my presence... When we still managed to win on the first run, and when the tank actually never bothered to even pop his cooldowns. Did that MMO bad walking cliché actually thought I was not watching, or too green to notice? But what annoyed me the most here were the people trying to defend me. I'm grateful they tried of course, but the only answer they gave was "Let it be, it's a new player! You are all horrible!".. Which was acknowledging that I did something wrong, which I didn't... -
Personally, I like to play it small and modest for my RP. Starting with an insignificant character that can evolve later, is way more engrossing to me. Funnier. Less deux ex machina. More subtle. As for these MMO stories, I don't care much if we are pictured as a world hero or a mundane character as long as the story is good, and of quality (don't get me started on the awful stories in SWTOR, imperial spy excepted..). Of course i'm a bit annoyed currently at the fact that we have been the invincible warrior of light for a long time, we eat primals for breakfast as well as garleans and ancient threats, and it's getting a bit... deja vu, if you know what i mean. It lost its appeal long ago. Don't get me wrong, i'm quite impressed with the story they managed to pull on a MMO format since 2.5 and 3.0. I just wish we get more setbacks and drama. Doubt. Harsh times.

need some tips on improving my character history and personality
Valence replied to Daias's topic in Character Workshop
Hello, I am not going in depth unless you want me to (especially on the character history part), so an the overall I think I can see where you want to go with that character, and you spend a great deal of words to describe his good qualities. He strikes me as a gentle soul that probably has a rather introverted side and may also have an obsession for auras and mi'qote, or just whatever is kawaii. I am not sure for what kind of audience and character you are aiming to begin with: are you trying to picture an adventurous hero like in shonen mangas, with many exaggerated traits and following strong tropes, or are you aiming for something more tame, subtle, and mature? Or something else? Comedy maybe? I think you will have to define that before everything, especially in a game like FF where it can vary tremendously in terms of tone and narrative. Ok, now you vaguely mentioned his 'darker' side as a certain pleasure in fight. With that in mind, I think you may have troubles developping a character precisely because you maybe do not dwelve enough on the flaws and more negative sides of the character. I would say that to flesh out a 3 dimensional character with a bit of depth, you will require to spend at least 50 or even 75% of the good sides / bad sides part on the actual negative sides of the character. It is what makes characters interesting, what makes them stand out and original, and what creates drama and incentives for them to evolve above everything else. It doesn't have necessarily to fall into the common cliché of the "dark brooding hero". Maybe you still want to pull out that trope... To draw from the same category of story and license, a character akin to Squall (FF8) pulls that cliché rather well, precisely because the dark brooding side is not there for the sake of it. It has reasons to be there, and it is developped to the point where it will make the character caustic, cynical, and overall detestable to his entourage (now also, take care with that too or you will just paint your character into a corner). A negative side can be anything really. Very mundane things, and can even participate to make your character more endearing. You say he likes to fight, and has a sadistic tendency. The big question might be, how to make that fit in the same mold than the "very sweet" side you described above? Is he going to be a pure sadist that actually hides that behind a false, honeyed attitude? Is he a pervert (seeing his obsession for some of the fair sex of other races)? Be careful with those themes, they are strong negative sides and not easy to pull without falling into the mustache twirling villain cliché or just the kind of character with no friends that nobody will ever want to play with. If I had to deal with those though, I would try to smooth the edges a little: maybe he is a small lalafel (like all lalafels duh) that has a size complex and can show sadism in situations where he has the occasion to hurt people taller and more intimidating than him? But overall, he is a nice fellow with some flaws like everybody else? Or maybe he got bullied in his childhood and tends to take his revenge somewhat now that he knows thaumathurgy or the likes, but overall, remains a sweet fellow that just can't stand some specific individuals? I hope that helps! -
If you mean not taken seriously, then there was indeed that whole topic about it... If you mean just getting approached by random people (i'm pretty sure your free company mates have no problem RPing with you)...? I am going to make waves and summon the slippery slope speculative argument here, but maybe a lot of roleplayers are also drawn to naturally roleplay with potential romantic interests? Not saying that Lalafels don't get any romantic interests, mind you... But for the general masses, you mentioned alts that are Au'ra and Mi'qote... You know what I mean? I might question the RP motives of some (as seen everywhere). Probably a silly thought of mine.

Duh... January 9th... Richard Nixon... ...but Lee Van Cleef too!

Ok so, I stumbled on your your post there about the conflict between 1.0 and 2.0 lore concerning the elemental wheel, and since it would seem that lore still states that the full elemental wheel is a whole and single entity, how does that fit into the conjuring and thaumathurgy aspect of the lore? More precisely, it would seem that lore indeed supports the full wheel to be a single entity accessed by both schools (conjury and thaumathurgy), besides the few obvious differences in the way they access it and deal with aether, how does that translate for both? What are the differences, and how does the way they deal with aether and their own sets of skill affects that? In fine, how does it translates in a practical point of view?

Having chosen myself to play a character very close to the Twelveswood and conjury, and knowing that I don't generally like to twist the lore when there is no real reason to do it, and here as said above, the only thing I would gain from a WhM perspective would be basically to be privy of the tiny circle of padjals protecting the Shroud... For what? Succor and the elemental healing? Also, I prefer to play a generally modest character which I find more interesting, without tying me too much to the Twelveswood at the same time... I can even still say that the character can hear the elementals too since it can also be a gift to non padjal characters... So yeah, I would think I actually lose a lot by trying to stand out as one of the handful of WhM in the world rather than playing my own little conjurer that have access to most of the same RP anyway...

Oh I was just mostly curious. I'm fine with the Balmung crowd.

Do you mean someone that is clad like a samurai and looks like a samurai, or a true samurai with all the social culture and status that comes with it? Because well, in the first case, we already have samurai like armour and kimonos...

There is actually french RP on Ragnarok? Intriguing.

What do far eastern Miqo'te have in particular..? What are far eastern mi'qote out of curiosity?

Physical differences between Duskwight and Wildwood
Valence replied to Ashe's topic in RP Discussion
You know, our ancestors lived in caves and knew how to use fire to light them up a bit... And not just them, humanity in every age. Mining, digging, sheltering... You don't have to see in the dark genetically to set up a stronghold in a cave. Of coure, if lore says they have a DW legacy, then lore says it.. -
Do you mean they would not be very welcoming if I am RPing with them and I am a little new still on the rules of FFXIV RP? (for example how to talk OOC or IC and such) Or do you mean to just new people in general? Meaning if I am a lv 12 newbie and I want to RP they will just ignore me thinking I am not a serious player? But either way thanks for the input! Not at all, people seem very open to start RP with anyone, especially in fast food RP places like the quicksands, for the better or worse.. But overall the community is extremely open "do you want to RP?" "Okay let's meet!" You just have to take a look at the connection section of that very forum here... No, I mean more in general in terms of server welcoming. On Hyperion for example, I stumbled on several players that actually came to me (OOCly of course, not much RP there), asking if I liked the game, needed any help, had any questions, to a point where I thought they were GMs at first. They added me in their friendlist immediately... I kept talking a lot with one of them about classes and the likes with one of them, over the following days. One day, I got two of them in a row. They were a little sad to see me telling them I was aiming for Balmung, as they genuinely seemed to care for the good atmosphere and their server in general. Another one, albeit interested to pull me into his/her FC, offered me to craft me a full set of lvl 34 equipment, with a spare half set of lvl 40. For free, spontaneously. So I kept it as the single thing I still have left from Hyperion... I have yet to see that on Balmung, though granted, I lost my little green sprout before transferring (I did that around level 45), so there is that too.
-
I have moved from Hyperion to Balmung and never regretted it as well, even if i'm a bit biased as well since it was my goal from the start to get there... Although people were a lot more welcoming and warm on Hyperion, probably since it's server that is a lot less busy and old... People were very kind to new players. On Balmung people just tend to keep to themselves. However, the RP is literally everywhere. And no RMT spamm.

Physical differences between Duskwight and Wildwood
