I don't have a lot of advice to give other than that your observations have been noticed over and over by many of the people in my social circle as well - our male characters struggle much more than our female ones to build connections and receive attention. It is something that is just part of this community overall, that you'll probably have to go the extra malm on a male character than a female one. However, there are roleplayers out there that are not as biased (not that I think anyone's being consciously rude about it, really, so much as just gravitating towards their preferences) - come find us! We are totally out there and I love to see well written male characters. Please don't give up and let the early difficulties run you off of playing your character.

We are truly awful at remembering to come by this community site to keep this "group page" updated, but I'm here to say that yes, we're still cookin'! Come by on Sundays to see what we can serve up for you. Also, we are looking for a few new employees to help us keep things running smoothly. We hired a namazu, but he drinks his wages in tea... Come find us on tumblr at https://dewdrop-inn-xiv.tumblr.com/ for more information!

Weren’t you guys DD-RP not that long ago? We were, but there’s another group of fine roleplayers hanging out under that tag, and after discussion, we decided we would switch to something a little more… punny, to keep ourselves distinct. After all, if you ask, do we RP? Yes, we DewRP! Is your inn a front for some illegal or shady business? No, what you see is what you get here - we’re just an inn and tavern. There’s no deep dark secret plot behind the curtain (though there’s nothing wrong with having one, if that’s your thing). For us, though, we’re a place for characters to meet up and socialize, and we’re focused on slice of life, casual, and character-driven RP. That doesn’t mean there aren’t storylines and plots, but they are character-driven and opt-in, and won’t disrupt the larger flow of tavern goings-on or force characters into moral or ethical quandaries. What’s your stance on lore? How strict are you? For people that want to join the FC/LS, we take a flexible stance on most lore things. If it seems possible within the known lore, we tend to accept most reasonable fanon or things that are rare but not improbable, such as a character having the Echo. We tend not to be OK with Warrior of Light kinds of things, though, such as being an IC White/Black Mage or having a personal connection to any major story characters. When it comes to people who just stop by as patrons of our events, we don’t consider lore at all, though OOC we will probably notice if someone’s saying/doing things that make no sense! IC, we will treat that patron politely, though the characters might find them slightly crazy and not interact more than is needed. If I join the FC/LS, do I have to host every Sunday? No, working the Sunday events is not required. We do love it when our DewRP folks help out though! We hold our dinner events as an outreach to the community and as a way of giving back to those that make other events across the server. However, often our members can simply hang out that day as customers or inn residents. We’re a small house, and a small event most weeks, and we rarely need more than a handful of people to make it run smooth. I might want to join on an alt. Is that okay? Yep! We do ask that you tell us up-front about that, though, especially if we’re not going to see you very often because the character isn’t frequently played or because you’re leading another RP group. Honesty is the best policy about that sort of thing - we’re far more likely to want someone around that tells us the truth about what they’re looking to get out of RP with us. In the end, it takes all kinds to make a good RP group, and we’re not going to turn someone away just because we didn’t get your main.

balmung Dewdrop Inn <DD-RP> [Balmung]
Iron Bride replied to Iron Bride's topic in Dewdrop Inn's Topics
We had a very successful opening on January 7th! Thanks so much to everyone that came out to the inn. See you next week. -
A home away from home for adventurers and travelers alike, Dewdrop Inn is a privately-run bed-and-breakfast located in the Mists. During the day, our hosts will direct you to local sights and provide leads on work-for-hire. When the day is through, grab a meal in the tavern, relax in our baths, or take a stroll in the gardens. Innkeepers Eidelrael and Iyrnbryda Haerkoenwyn, a pair of sisters from an isle in the Bloodbrine Sea, have come to Eorzea and brought their family hospitality business with them. As the doors open to the public for the first time, they'll want customers, of course - but also tenants for rooms, hosts and hostesses to make the place lively, and the kinds of regulars that only a tavern can draw in. So don't be shy - do drop in to the Dewdrop Inn! We're a new FC on Balmung, but its founders have been playing here for a year already are pretty well established. We have a house and all the buffs you'll want OOC, but I'm hoping what you really want is fun RP, because so do we! We started Dewdrop Inn because we wanted a roleplay concept that was truly as open as possible, so that anyone with the will to try and a good attitude can come and have some fun. Our roleplay is intended to be laid back and slice-of-life; while there might be plots here and there, we're looking to let you be the author of your character's story, not try to dictate how things go. We dream of making a wider network of roleplayers that understand that many of the memorable moments of this hobby come down to the small, random, unexpected interactions that we want to help facilitate. We're open to most kinds of characters. After all, just about anyone has a reason to visit an inn! Travelers of course, passing through as an adventurer or as a destination for a couple on holiday. Or maybe someone looking to rent a room long-term, outside of the bustle of Limsa's pirate-filled levedesk, or a local looking for a new tavern to haunt nightly. Maybe someone looking for work, either doing jobs for hire or perhaps as part of the Inn staff itself! To learn more about us or to learn how to join, visit our site!

balmung Back to Bökh - Xaela Wrestling & Feast!
Iron Bride replied to Oyuu's topic in Chronicled Events
Personally, I thought it was fun, and wished my character wasn't unable to participate at the time beyond watching, so thanks! I was glad the Uragshi got a chance to try and "defend the title" from the last time someone organized a bokh out there. As for whether non-Xaela should have been allowed, I feel like post-MSQ events, it doesn't make a huge amount of sense for the area near Reunion to feel closed off to outsiders and I didn't have a problem with their inclusion. The vast majority of the crowd was Xaela or connected to Xaela via backstory for one reason or another anyway. Now if we'd been wrestling on top of the Dawn Throne, that would be a different argument, I think! But the Qestir don't seem to have a lot to say (har har) about outsiders that don't act in a way that disrupts the peace. -
Who are the Uragshi? We’re a player-made tribe on Balmung that formed from characters that, for whatever reason, either lost or decidedly left their original tribe. The name “Uragshi” is derived from the Mongolian word for “Forward”, and that is the tribe’s theme - they seek to be forward-thinking and forward-moving, creating new traditions, pushing boundaries, and redefining what it means to be a tribal Xaela that interacts heavily in the wider world. The Uragshi consider themselves to be an Eorzean tribe, and as such, have made their main camp in the west, far from the politics and problems of the steppe. While some would say that means they have given up something that makes them Xaela, the Uragshi would instead counter that it is a return to their nomadic roots to venture out and find new places and ways to live. As a result, Uragshi are generally more cosmopolitan than your average group of Xaela, and additionally, find themselves far more blessed with the use of aether than their cousins back east. These things are gradually changing them to be a unique blend of eastern values and western culture. https://68.media.tumblr.com/0354752630f9134fadebb5fe17c8e44f/tumblr_inline_ou0n72adDw1uisy38_500.png[/img] What is it like to be Uragshi? Because the Uragshi clan was formed in Eorzea, not in Othard, they have some unique challenges and perspectives that are not necessarily found in the lore tribes or even player-made ones. Uragshi are fairly progressive as a whole - they don’t have gender roles, they see LGBT as completely normal to the point of it not even needing mention, and are in fact rather open-minded towards non-Xaela too, seeing them as partners and friends (and even possible clan members, someday). They have a keen interest in the development and refinement of magic schools into something with a distinctly Xaela flair, and they don’t shy away from dabbling in things that might be dangerous or powerful. To be Uragshi is to have one foot firmly planted in tradition with the other taking a step into the odd and unknown. This mindset has some drawbacks. For example, when it comes to steppe roleplay, we play that canon-powerful tribes like the Oronir and Dotharl treat Uragshi with disdain, being little better than scale-less. Uragshi have little standing on the steppe, and often times, have to prove themselves in ways that a Xaela hailing from a more known tribe would not have to. As a small clan, the Uragshi also rely heavily on the friends and alliances they make when they are in the east, knowing full well that without them, the would be quite outnumbered and subjugated without a second thought by a larger, warlike tribe. When they are in Eorzea, though, they see themselves as ambassadors of Xaela culture, tradition, and values, and do not bow to any other clan. They are good neighbors to others, regardless of race or origin, and good stewards of the land around them in La Noscea, protecting it from dangerous beasts and bandits. Limsans generally see them as a harmless enough group, as they are not known to cause trouble and are cooperative, even supportive, of the Maelstrom. Recently, the clan returned to Eorzea after several moons getting back to their roots, so to speak, on the steppe. Since coming back home, they have been building up their Vylbrand camp, raising new yurts and building fences to keep their recently received horses in, which they purchased from the Noykin and had brought back west by sea. They are beginning to reach out again to Eorzeans, and plan to hold a small festival dedicated to the worship of Nhaama and the turning of the seasons. You can read more about us on our tumblr - @the-uragshi is the location of our info pages. You can find more in-depth information about Uragshi values and beliefs, our admission process, clan structure, and more. Note that we are both a linkshell and an FC! If this sounds like something your character would be into, but aren't looking for an FC, we are open to LS-only membership. We started as an LS after all. We actually use the linkshell and discord as our main methods of communication. We started the FC portion for the purposes of having housing areas for roleplay - we do not have FC-only events or activities, the LS folks are welcome to all things.

Canon Xaela tribes--how much elaboration is too much?
Iron Bride replied to Posona's topic in Character Workshop
I generally have worked from the theory that, although the lore seems to use the words "clan" and "tribe" interchangeably when speaking about Xaela, it would somewhat make more sense that a tribe is made up of subunits (clans). One of the side quests makes note that there are 50 Oroniri warriors up on the throne, and I don't know about you, but it doesn't seem too believable that the entirety of the steppe is able to be kept under control by 50 dudes/dudettes. It makes a lot more sense if Magnai is not only khan of all Oronir, but chieftain over this specific group of throne-dwelling Oronir, with other Oroniri living elsewhere. These smaller Oronir clans living elsewhere, might have slightly different traditions, living under the rule of chieftains or chieftesses, but are still fully Oroniri as they all share a common mythos or philosophy (in this case, belief in Azim as the superior god). This slightly looser framework allows for two characters, written by two different roleplayers, to both be Oronir, but to have grown up not knowing one another and to have different ideas on how best to praise the sun - without headcanon conflict. This is just my way of handling it, yours might vary! I think encouraging creativity in this regard is more beneficial than harmful overall and fully support people making headcanon offshoot camps of canon tribes that are a little bit different than the small lore blurb we get. -
Updated, prettified, explained joining process in greater detail. The Stormblood rush of Xaela is over, but we're still here! Hope to see more lovely dusk scales around in the months to come.

I've seen the spectrum on this personally over the past 10 years of RP. I've had "whole foods organic" relationship RP that lasted for years and was full of ups and downs and was fantastic. I've also had organic relationship RP that's been a freakin dumpster fire of annoyance and frustration OOC, no matter how well the characters seemed to get on. My arranged relationship RP? Same thing, only often with less OOC trouble since both parties are going into it with a particular expectation. Sometimes it works out amazing IC and can make for a fun will-they-or-won't-they story of learning to love one another, especially if the arrangement is ALSO an arranged relationship IC, too. Sometimes, it turns out to be the worst idea ever conceived - the characters do not get along well at all despite what you expected (and not in the fun rivalmance sort of way) or even worse, the two characters are just freakin' boring together. These days, I would say more of my RP falls into the latter camp for romance, arranged over un-arranged. I do take chances on the crazy random happenstance romance RP here and there, but usually the ships that I do at least a decent amount of pre-planning OOC for tend to work better and longer for me. The whole "dating and falling in love" segment of romance RP is fun, but I think I have more fun with the part that starts when the Disney movie ends and my characters find out what it's really like to be partners in life. That usually requires an RP partner that's 1) in it for the long haul, 2) isn't living vicariously through their character to the point that they'll be upset with ups and downs, and 3) a degree of trust and maturity that I'm not likely to find out of a random someone whose character just happens to fancy mine. Romance RP is always kind of a gamble, though. No matter how well you take the odds into consideration and count the cards, sometimes you still walk away from the table with nothing because it's a bad hand. While other times you just dump change into the slot machine and it spits out a jackpot out of nowhere. You just never know!

Update that the tribe is now on the steppe, and will be for the next moon at least. You should be able to find us around Reunion on some nights! Also, we did end up making a FC after all, but... it is the FC that doesn't do anything. We're only hoping to get a house someday to use for our camp. So if you see [Xaela] that's us! Or one of our alts.

Hi there! We really don't have an "ally" rank so to speak; we give linkpearls to clan members and only very specific characters (itgesen) outside of the the clan. As we handle all of our joining in-character, I invite you to make contact and get to know us IC! You can see information about joining in the "How To Join" tab both here and on our site. As an aside, if you're a Xaela RPer simply looking for more Xaela RP in general, feel free to message me and I can get you a link to the community Xaela Discord group, which has been super active lately and help you get a foot in the door. Thanks for your interest!

Monthly update to reflect any changes! Much of the clan is heading to Kugane in search of a merchant that can help them transport a herd of horses across the sea, so if you're looking to meet with them, for any reason, Kugane is your best bet for the near future.

Did a bit of an update to fix out-of-date information.

Is RP just a way for people to hook up these days?
Iron Bride replied to Averis's topic in RP Discussion
Gotta agree here. I've been at this for... almost ten years, now, and can't remember a time where romance/sex didn't feature heavily in MMO roleplay culture. Balmung's culture is fairly open about it compared to some servers/games I've been on, but compared to say, Moon Guard in WoW, Balmung is still kind of tame. It all depends on your own experiences and perspectives, I guess. -
discussion Alternate RP server (Updated 5/18/17)
Iron Bride replied to Mercer's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I don't have a direct horse in this race right now, being on Balmung, but I am interested in helping start a second server. I will say that everyone I've met from Jenova's RP group so far have seemed to be really great folks - genuinely excited for the possibility of growing their community - whereas that has not necessarily been true of Mateus (this is not geared towards anyone posting in this thread, only a general perspective based on my own investigations). I think attitude makes a big difference. Mateus seems more organized, but it also seems to have an underlying current of us vs them that I'm not seeing from the Jenova folks. (Jenovites? idk) So right now I'm personally hoping Jenova rises in favor with the community; I think there's a lot of good there that could be nurtured.
