Sylentmana Posted December 18, 2015 Share #27 Posted December 18, 2015 I'm looking forward to the game. I got invited to the betas but it won't let me download the game unless I assign it to an empty drive. I don't have any empty drives and I'm not going to delete a whole batch of games just to play the beta of one. Link to comment

Larson Posted December 21, 2015 Share #33 Posted December 21, 2015 I prefer the Enix approach. Both men and women have options that show off their bodies without losing what makes them men and women. Then again I also like traditional gender roles (sue me) so masculine males will always do it for me more than a man in a dress. Link to comment

Jana Posted December 22, 2015 Share #36 Posted December 22, 2015 The South Korean approach to the problem of sexualization of women in games has always been to sexualize everyone. I do like FFXIV's approach but I'm used to this kind of thing in MMOs! Link to comment
V'aleera Posted December 22, 2015 Share #37 Posted December 22, 2015 Game seems fun, but the lore (what little I could experience in beta and what little is presented on the official site) seems a bit flimsy. I don't mind filling in the blanks to an extent, but some guidelines for naming at the very least would be really appreciated. Link to comment

I don't mind filling in the blanks to an extent, but some guidelines for naming at the very least would be really appreciated. Yeah, the lore does seem really shallow. I was expecting the Cerulean Order vs. Crimson Legion conflict to play a much larger part in the lore, the main story seems to focus on the Hongmoon or whatever. I guess I never really got out of the "tutorial" part of the game, though. I didn't have much time to play this weekend. Dammit, I want a game that will indulge my childhood kung fu fantasies. Oli! Posted December 22, 2015 Share #40 Posted December 22, 2015 Would anyone mind giving a spill on the game? I really like the concept, but the character designs and world visuals disgust me, as well as the somewhat disjointed flow of attack animations. But I'm still willing to give it a try anyway if someone has a good sales pitch. Link to comment

Age of Wulin just straight up takes place in the jianghu wuxia alternate history of Jin Yong novels like Legend of the Condor Heroes and The Smiling Proud Wanderer, and a lot of martial arts schools are lifted directly from the books. However, I can't say whether the gameplay is any good or not. Link to comment

I just checked out Age of Wulin, and it looks like it would have been really awesome fifteen years ago. Link to comment

Dogberry Posted December 22, 2015 Author Share #44 Posted December 22, 2015 Gameplay that delivers on all the promises TERA made but couldn't live up to. Which are what, specifically? TERA billed itself as "God of War-esque combat in an MMO" and fell really short of that mark. I grew bored of the combat when it seemed more like WoW combat without auto-attack. Blade and Soul manages to come across much more like an action game, with air juggling and knockdowns, counters, and such. I was worried for a bit in Beta that the combat in B&S was taking a turn toward the TERA style, until something happened that blew my mind. Random trash mobs were using my own tactics against me. I had to start thinking about my battles instead of going through my standard combos and dodging when necessary. I had to put up a legitimate defense and come into a fight with a real game plan. Now, of course, these were just trash mobs, and beaten easily, but it's not a game you can mindlessly click through. Bosses were a real challenge, and I got my bell rung a lot when they pulled a combo on me that I wasn't expecting. Link to comment
Caspar Posted December 23, 2015 Share #45 Posted December 23, 2015 I wonder if watching the anime would give enough lore knowledge to rp. I only saw a few episodes. Supposedly it was actually not too bad despite being promotional, but I couldn't judge from the minute exposure I had to it. Link to comment
V'aleera Posted December 23, 2015 Share #46 Posted December 23, 2015 In almost every place I've seen it discussed, the anime has been derided as not only terrible in its failure to adequately represent the plot but also generally subpar by the already loose standards of common shonen anime. But I haven't seen it myself, so I'm just passing on second-hand reactions. Link to comment
Oli! Posted December 23, 2015 Share #47 Posted December 23, 2015 I'll probably watch the anime and do a full dissection of it just for kicks. Still extremely mixed on the game, but I'll always give animation a shot. Link to comment

The creator is extremely robust, allowing you to create everything from a reasonably proportionate character to something of nightmares. Hell, you can even create a child/teen character. Basically, the let you do whatever. I, personally, liked the in-game visuals when I played the beta. Combat is essentially Tera. If you're unfamiliar with that, then think of the FFVII Remake trial. They do away with the holy trinity format in favour of real time reaction: blocks, parries and etc. Unfortunately, the actual story and lore is somewhat benign. You're the cliche student whose hometown gets razed and you seek revenge on those who committed the act. I'd say spoilers, however this happens within the first five minutes. From that point forward process is slow. I stopped paying attention because the side quests are your usual run of the mile "fetch me my dress by killing some carbs" (seriously). Granted, I only played to level ten, and heard it picks up soon thereafter. Overall, I say give it a shot on gameplay alone. I don't know enough to say whether the story is worth any investment, but as a free to play. You're not losing anything except time. Link to comment
Caspar Posted December 23, 2015 Share #49 Posted December 23, 2015 "fetch me my dress by killing some carbs" (seriously). This should be an actual quest, where you must kill some carbs to wear the dress and bring it back to the quest giver, otherwise it won't fit. But yeah I've heard the leveling is pretty much standard Korean FTP MMO fare, aka. really tedious. I have a high tolerance for that, but regardless it bears mentioning. Link to comment
