Pokemon Returning Player

Recommended Posts

So for those that are avid Pokemon players I finally given in to the nostalgia and seeing these badass looking New ones am gonna buy a 3DS and a Pokemon game later today. Though I have some questions I hope you can help with.

1. I stopped playing Pokemon after Soul Silver a few years ago, so all my Pokemon are probably in a landfill right now. Some key Pokemon I want again are Giritina, Rayquaza, and Typhlosion. Do I need to buy their respective games and trade them again? Please say no. . .

2. Which is the best one to start off with? I see they even made Ruby and Sapphire remakes. . Do I get those or Black and White 2 or something?

3. What's the best one you've played? Might help me decide.

Thank you for your time.

1) Funnily enough, you can get all the Pokemon you listed in ORAS. Typhlosion can be gotten as a Cyndaquil as a gift, Rayquaza has to be catched as part of the Delta Episode, and Giratina can be obtained if you have Palkia and Dialga (you can get one in-game and trade the other from another game). Anyway, between XY and ORAS you can get almost any Pokèmon. If you want to see the newer the most, you should get X or Y, otherwise get Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.

2) If you like good plots, BW and BW2 (especially the former) are absolutely a must. Otherwise, you can skip straight to the 6th generation.

3) It depends on various aspects: Plot-wise, Black and White were the best, but gameplay-wise, I play X and Y a lot because you can catch a lot of Pokèmon early on so it's perfect for variants. Also, XY are quite long, if you never played them before and you don't read a guide, which is a good thing, I guess?

Last one I played was Y. I really enjoyed it, having purchased but never finishing Pearl or Black. I didn't really care for Ruby or Sapphire (because who doesn't love needing three fucking water HMs that blow?!) so I skipped Omega/Alpha.

Y has enough interesting new pokemon along with enough classic ones along the way. I struggled to find anything I liked in Black, and Pearl felt the same way. I'm not trying to make my team entirely out of my Gen1/2 favorites, but I just really liked what Y had to offer me.

Mega-evolution is pretty stupid though.

So,

I need both OR AS to get Rayquaza

I need Both Palkia and Dialga for Giratina

B&W and B&W 2 are the best story wise

Mega evolution is stupid

Water HMs are a pain in the ass

I need some special gift thingy to get a Typhlosion.

Personally, the best thing about Gen 5 was the plot. The pokemon team made huge steps in storytelling with BW1 and BW2. However, from a gameplay standpoint, gen five was just... not that great. You'd be better off reading one of those Nuzlocke webcomics if you want the plot.

X and Y are the complete opposite. The gameplay is phenomenal, the graphics are gorgeous, and the new Gen 6 pokemon are much more... shall we say, inspired than 5's were. But the plot just ain't there. The characters are so shallow it makes me sad. Why does Team Flare want to blow up the world again? We just don't know.

Which brings me to ORAS, by far my favorite entry in the series I've played so far. Not only do they improve upon XY's amazing gameplay, but the original Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald story is wonderfully remastered. All the side-characters are well developed, even the villains for a change (Archie and Maxie have MOTIVES?? IMPOSSIBLE.) It's also got something most pokemon games lack. A decent endgame. There's a whole new plot post-Pokemon League (During which you get Rayquaza, it's pretty epic), plus multiple daily battles and a collection of other small sidequest-type things.

Anyway, if you want a good balance between story AND gameplay, and you don't hate water HMs (Seriously, I LIKE surf and waterfall, they have actual function!) my vote is definitely ORAS.

Also, no, you don't need both games to get Rayquaza. You just need one.

Well looks like ima Get OR, cause Fuck Kyogre.

I'll probably get Black only to get Reshiram and then trade him to OR, when I think about it I hope all my favorites both legendary and not or at least the bulk are in OR, otherwise ima have the whole collection like when I had Platinum.

Damn you nintendo for cleverly making us buy every game for specific Pokemon. Damn you indeed.

I like Surf and Waterfall, too. I just hated needing to have them (and fucking Dive) on hand while out in the world. Admittedly, I'm probably misremembering and exaggerating how much they were needed, but... Redundancy! Surf is strong and Special, Waterfall is strong and Physical, so WHY do you make me need both of them?! It just felt sloppy. Grumble grumble didn't like water types anyway.

1 & 2. No, for Rayquaza you need only one. You need both (or someone willing to trade) for Giratina.

3. Yes.

4. Don't mind them myself, but I don't really care either. Opinions, I guess.

5. Surf is a really good move, at least.

6. Nah, it's an in-game gift in ORAS. You get it after beating the league.

Reshiram can be obtained in OR. You need to get a level 100 'mon and then it appears somewhere. I haven't touched my game in a while so I don't know where, but it has to do with soaring (AKA Fly without needing the HM and with more locations available).

Oh, well that's convenient as hell lol

Mirage Spot guide from Serebii

That has the list of Mirage Spots and what requirements you need to get the special ones.  If you need quick access to a higher level Pokemon, just say something here and one of us can figure something out, either by direct friend trade or through GTS.

Also, if you are getting OR/AS and if you have the space, download the Special Demo Version from the e-shop.  You can get a Pokemon and items for finishing the missions to help you get a head start.  The Pokemon will be too high to use right away, but some of the other items might come in useful.

So are these like red and blue remakes or..?

Cause, I'll be the tart here, they don't hold up very well I wouldn't pay through the nose for these games lol.

There's also many many ways to play them for free on your computer/cellphone etc.

I am gonna be all over Pokemon GO though.

Gimme VR goggles so I can be a chiphead.

While they are re-releasing Red and Blue for the Virual Console, that's for the 20th anniversary of Pokemon Red and Green and not what's currently being discussed

What people in this thread are talking about, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, are remakes of the GBA games Ruby and Sapphire

and they're freaking fantastic remakes, so!!

Pokemon-5.png

(sorry, gen 3 is my favorite and I can get defensive of it; playing emulators of old games won't accomplish what Aaron is looking for, in any case, although that's definitely a valid option in addition)

I would definitely recommend getting them if you want to catch up to everything that's happened. You'll get access to all the Pokemon you listed, Aaron, as well as all of the current mega-evolutions. If you weren't into the original Ruby and Sapphire, Pokemon X or Y were also great games, although you won't have all the mega-evolutions in those games, the ones that were introduced in ORAS (like Mega Altaria, Mega Audino... etc). However I assume Pokemon Z is inevitably coming eventually, and that probably will have all the mega-evolutions up to now, if not some new ones, too. But I don't think they've announced when it will be finished

Between the beautiful graphics and awesome mega-evolutions and the ability to get all sorts of cool legendaries with Mirage Spots, and the revamped Secret Base system(!!!) I simply can't recommend it enough if you want to get back into Pokemon. It'll tickle your nostalgia bone if you have one and catch you up on all the current mechanics.

I confess, I am not a pokemon master and the topic diversion was unintentional.

I do recommend checking out either X or Y as well if you can. It was pretty neat, especially considering that the region was modeled after France. The story was so-so with it, but overall a solid entry.

Also, if you have any of the DS and GBA games lying around, it's worth looking into the Pokemon Bank and seeing what all you can transfer up to Gen 6.

And a side-note... You can play the Global Trade System to get the pokemon you want, too. Only ones that may be a bit iffy to get your hands on might be the legendaries through there, but most of the others, you can trade for, easily. (It's how I filled majority of the holes in my Dex after I finished transferring my pokemon from previous games.)

You should be able to exchange it for the same title, I think.

(Edit)

I also just looked it up and the Mew giveaway is a download from Gamestop via their in-store Wifi distribution and not a download code.

Well, easily might not be the right word for it. Unless you have lvl9 and under legendaries. :D I've seen people asking for lvl9- Dialgas for version exclusive but still common Pokemon.

@Buddy the GS said they didn't know anything about codes for mew.

No worries!  Thanks for trying at least!

Seems Nintendo didn't get their own memo, then.  Even the official Anniversary area of the Pokemon site mentions it is obtained through serial code rather than going in to the store, and as of yesterday morning that was what all the various info sites had listed.

The Mythical Pokémon Mew will be available at participating GameStop stores starting February 1, 2016. Visit GameStop to pick up a code that will unlock Mew in your Pokémon Omega RubyPokémon Alpha SapphirePokémon X, or Pokémon Y game. Be sure to redeem your code in your game by May 31, 2016!
