I've been meaning to try and get into one of these FATE events at some point or another. If you're willing to have me and possibly help me update the decently outdated sheet I made for a lark a while ago... I think Chachan could possibly do Event A? He's a smith, so I could see him coming along to help eyeball the quality of the ore at the Burning Wall? Something like that.

Absolutely! I'll send you the invite to our Discord, it's where far more of the action and communication is happening. Very convenient for asking for help with rules and planning events and all that.

The /Golden Pride/, Ul'dah's fledgeling gangland empire, has been gaining a reputation as vigilantes; antiheroes who punish the wicked that think they can escape the grasp of Justice. How true this is remains to be seen, yet it is being taken seriously, both by the populace, and by the glorified thugs' enemies, both real and potential... which may soon come to mean the same thing.

Violent expansionism by members of the Ul'dahn tribal gang known as the Golden Prints Sept has resulted in a large number of the city's minor criminal gangs being folded in under one banner, naming itself collectively the /Golden Pride/. The fledgeling thug empire's name begins to be known beyond the reach of the underworld, for better or worse...

A breath of reprieve comes over the city of Ul'dah as the first breath of cool air in what feels like moons blows through the alleys and down the main causeways. It seems that /Something Wicked/ has been averted, or is at least growing quieter... the desire to /Get Out Of Town, Fast/ has begun to wane, inviting more scrutiny from legitimate authorities, for better or worse.

END OF ACT III

The dust begins to settle, as Starsfall's third act comes to a close.

The dark energies afflicting Ul'dah - the product of aetherial experiments the end-goal of which remains obscure - have mostly dissipated.

The Brass Blades of the Aster have retreated from the fore, to lick their wounds.

The Golden Pride criminal gang are keeping a low profile, due to attention from the Immortal Flames.

The liberated tribal ex-slaves known as the Bright Ones have escaped recapture, the majority taking shelter on the fringes of the Black Shroud, for now.

Mysterious Monetarist Mastermind Moiraine Astervane, AKA Goldentail, is missing following an apparent home invasion, in which much of her fortress-like mansion was destroyed, due to the violent release of aetherial energies that had built up inside the premises. The Ossuary is investigating the apparent presence of Void-related energies, with assistance from once-disgraced specialist U'dorian, known as U'dorian the Grey.

And the Nunh of the Falling Stars Sept, X'zarann Silverfall, is at large...

Updates and Clarifications to the Turn System

The Turns system has proven itself an invaluable tool for effecting both player and NPC behind-the-scenes actions through a storyline. With that in mind, a few refinements and clarifications are necessary.

Introduction to Turns![/b]]Forewarned is forearmed, and preparation is an important part of any adventurer's long-term survival. However, there's only so much time in a day to find out important information before going into an event. Even the most powerful magician, richest Monetarist, and strongest warrior has to contend with the rise and fall of the sun.

To represent the issue of limited time in a storyline between events, a modified version of the Turn system from the Guild-Fate (or Seasons) FC management system, by Halren Rhalsgard, will be used to limit the amount of actions players can take between events. Actions will be broken down into one of three categories, with a different turn value for each:

I am imposing a soft cap on the amount of Turns a given player can spend in a given round of events. This is intended to show realism (you can only do so much with your time) as well as to encourage more shy players to take actions.

The cap will be determined each round, and will be roughly equal to 1/5 of the total NEWLY AVAILABLE Turns. So if a new event spawns 20 Turns, the cap would be 4 per player. This cap can be exceeded upon request, with GM's approval.

Prepare[/b]]

Cost: 1 Turn

Prepare actions involve single characters gaining advantages to improve their own chances of success. These actions are performed on their own time, and often require little personal investment on the characters' part.

Common Prepare actions include looking for/making new equipment, getting consequences healed, hiring help for a future event, or in the case of ship-based events repairing damages and replacing crew.

The Prepare action is a simple, single roll, representing an action that might take, at most, a few hours to resolve ICly. It's a popular choice for, well, preparing for an event!

Research/Investigate[/b]]

Cost: 2 Turns

Some actions take a lengthier time commitment because they require the character to spend a lot of time reading books, talking to old contacts, or piecing together clues. Attempts to take actions involving the Lore, Investigate, and Contacts skills in particular are considered research actions. However, these actions can often yield information and results critical to resolving a plot.

In general, actions that take suggest a long period of time to work like the skills above indicate a Research/Investigate. Actions that require multiple different skills to work are also candidates. It's possible for a simple Prepare action to become a Research/Investigate as the situation becomes more complicated.

An Investigate action is more in-depth than a Prepare, but basically still just a single roll. Like it says, it's for work that takes time, and time is a resource, which is what Turns are all about.

Additionally, inside the aegis of Investigate we sometimes will see the Challenge action. A Challenge takes 2 Turns, and involves 3 rolls, not all determined by the player, to achieve a more complex goal that could not be resolved with a single Prepare but will not necessarily take more time than an Investigate.

Players do not ask for Challenges. The GM decides when it's an appropriate and necessary action type for a desired goal.

Discussion[/b]]

Cost: 2 Turns

Getting together to pool information with other players requires some organization and time spent gathering everyone in one place, in addition to the actual RP scene itself. No rolls are needed for a Discussion.

Discussions indicate fairly large gatherings of characters, at least four or more. If you need to coordinate everyone's schedules OOC, it's a Discussion. No rolls are necessary.

There has been some confusion about Discussions. It's not intended for when PCs just want to interact and RP about plot points; that can be done on their own time. It's intended for when GM presence is required for such a gathering. Perhaps rolls will be needed. Perhaps people just hope to have the GM prompt them if they forget or misremember things their characters would know. Perhaps discussions might turn into something more complex, a miniature Act! Either way, it's a convenient vehicle for getting together and discussing, with supervision.

Another useful function of the Discussion can be if players want to interact in an RP capacity with any NPCs. Because this is a use of time on my part, much as I do love and appreciate the interest, I am going to require Turn use for it, going forward. This being said; if multiple players want to get together at a single time and Discuss with one or more NPCs, the Turn cost will not increase, and may be divided among them, as desired.

Act[/b]]

Cost: 3/4 Turns

Why wait for the DM to come up with events all the time? This is supposed to be a proactive system, and you're adventurers! You don't always have time to wait for other people to cause problems for you to solve. Get out there and cause problems of your own!

Acting indicates that you want to organize an event outside of the usual list that come with sign ups. The cost varies based on the size of the event. Small events with no more than three players cost 3 Turns. Larger ones that would be the size of a normal event, up to four to six players, cost 4 turns. Make sure everybody's schedules are clear for this - especially the DM!

The infamous Act is infrequently used (especially in this plot). Some plots might revolve heavily around player initiative; in others, such as Starsfall, more often I will plumb the playerbase for ideas about tracks people would like to follow before making the new round's events, and have the events reflect PC intent. This being said, Acts are still possible. The most important thing is scheduling: grab the other players, and the GM, make a discussion group on Discord, and see when everyone might have a few hours to wreak some adventure.

In the future, at times, I might leave a specific event slot open; just an open, unused time slot, for players to create an Act for.

Restrictions[/b]]

There are only a few restrictions on being able to use Turns to prepare outside of events, as follows:

Characters who have signed up for events marked as TRAVEL events cannot perform actions - they are too busy getting to the event itself.

There are only a limited number of Turns to be used in each round, collectively shared between all members of the plot. Turn usage will be tracked in the sign-up thread, but once they're gone, you're out of time.

Turns do not guarantee success - they give you a chance at success.

One other restriction I would like to explore, other than Turn caps (above), is Travel. I've not used Travel events in Starsfall yet, though that may change. In the past, I've required that players set aside IC time to actually travel to and attune to key locations (Camp Nowhere, Camp Glorious). Moving forward, I will likely require a 1-or-2-Turn expenditure for such activities. I might even give the option; spend a few Turns to travel, or simply forfeit all Turn use for the current round. The latter might spare allies the cost of dwindling resources, when things get urgent...

There is a time to act, and then a time to rest, before acting once more. Yet time does not stand still...

Act III.V: Interlude!

Rumors and Story Aspects

  • A febrile peace has settled upon Ul'dah. Those who pay attention to such things are of a mind that /Now is the Calm Before the Storm/.
  • Newfound energy grips Ul'dah's underworld; between the strong front posed by the resilient Golden Pride, the sundering of monetarist mastermind Goldentail's estate, and the ill-concealed return to the public eye of formerly-disgraced master thaumaturge (and suspected voidmage) U'dorian the Grey, it seems it's /A Good Time to be Bad/.
  • In the tundra lands below the mountains of Xelphatol, the Falling Stars, a previously unknown (and, if the rumors are true, violently xenophobic) tribe of miqo'te are showing more interest in the outside world. Increased trading activity is gaining the attention of merchants everywhere, as are rumors of the tribals' fighting prowess, coupled with a newfound willingness to hire themselves out as mercenaries.

a) Glorious Battle! (Saturday, May 13th, 2017, 7 pm CST)

Spirits are high among the combative types of Ul'dah, and now that the shock has worn off, the populace hungers for the clash of arms. The obvious solution: a tournament of arms in the Coliseum! With security specially provided by the Immortal Flames, an open invitation has been put out to Adventurers and pit fighters of all stripes, to this single-elimination battle extravaganza.

"Come! Put on a show! Excite the crowd! Impress a sponsor! They say the winner will get to take on a famous Flame Captain, in a special exhibition match! An opportunity not to be missed!"

~This will be an 8-fighter single-elimination tourney; unfilled spots, if any, will be filled by NPCs. Also, signing up to this event willl not exclude you from signing up for either of the other events this round~

1. X'cinna Ares

2. Naoh'a Aznable

3. V'aleera Lhuil

4. Virara Wakuwa

5. S'imba Tia

6.

b) The Heights of Ambition (Thursday, May 18th, 2017, 7:15 pm CST)

In the frozen tundra lands of the Falling Stars, a challenge has been issued by X'indro, the Southern Warlord; a race against a pack of his so-called 'angels' to collect a treasure from the mountains. Which mountains? The homelands of the Ixal, of course... with the treasure in question the prized egg of one of the beastmen's matriarchs.

"Four versus four, that's fair yes? Try not to drop the egg on the way back. I get the egg, and you all have permission to walk in Falling Stars lands, unmolested. And the team that wins, gets a prize! Do your best~!"

1. S'imba Tia

2. Virara Wakuwa

3.

4.

c) The Depths of Anguish (Sunday, May 21st, 2017, 3 pm CST)

In the wake of the violent confrontation some sennights past and the explosions which ensued - in an estate rumored to be rife with void energies - an expedition to study the structural integrity of the catacombs was launched. No one returned. Adventurers are needed. "Horrified screams over the linkpearls, then silence. Something terrible is down there, and it's not just a few zombies this time."

1. Evangeline McBeef

2. Khira Lhizahla

3. Zaphir Zurlac

4. Reis Okeya

5. R'shesha Otharn

Reserve List

1. Naoh'a Aznable

2.

3.

Signed Up (but had to cancel):

1. Jana Ridah

2. X'cinna Ares

SPECIAL NOTE: Any player who signs up for any of the above events, even to be on the reserve, will receive a free Minor Milestone. This is because it has been three weeks to a month or more since any events have been run, and IC progression continues apace. Also, don't forget the new house rule mentioned in Discord:

HOUSE RULE: For Starsfall, players are allowed to, if they wish, purchase a Stunt that works in the following manner: +1 to a single skill, with a single, simple condition, otherwise always active. The cap to which a skill may be brought with this sort of Stunt is 5.

EXAMPLE: Gain +1 to Fight as long as you are fighting with fist weapons. This may not bring your Fight to higher than 5.
