Branson Thorne Posted February 26, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2015 Ready to hear the biggest noob mistaken that FFXIV has ever seen or heard of??? So, I've never really got into the whole materia breaking down / melding etc. I figured I'd wait on all that till I hit 50. But today I was curious and thought I'd start breaking down all the gear I had that was possible. So I just started going to town on everything, breaking down anything that I could...... Imagine my surprise when my dungeon qu poppedand all my gear was wipes out, switched to Gladiator, gear gone.... No warning whatsoever that I was breaking down gear that was in my gear sets. Now, I only have 20,000 left to gear my 42 Bard class, and my level 40 Gladiator class all over again.... Link to comment
Dogberry Posted February 26, 2015 Share #2 Posted February 26, 2015 So you ended up turning the gear you were using into materia? Because I've done that, too. Twice. Link to comment
Unnamed Mercenary Posted February 26, 2015 Share #3 Posted February 26, 2015 I'm guilty of that. ...ran a dungeon in broken/glamour gear too. Link to comment

Warren Castille Posted February 26, 2015 Share #5 Posted February 26, 2015 Oh thank god, thought I was surely the only one! It's a tough lesson to learn, but you learned it: Only convert gear AFTER you replace it. Did you at least get some materia worth selling to help recoup the loss? Link to comment
Unnamed Mercenary Posted February 26, 2015 Share #6 Posted February 26, 2015 Oh thank god, thought I was surely the only one! Not by any means! ...but if this was an end-game duty, I hope the party was ok... lol If it was a low-level roulette or something, you can have gear off by 10-15 levels before anyone notices lol Link to comment
Aoi Fukiku Posted February 26, 2015 Share #7 Posted February 26, 2015 Done it a few times as well. Put myself in a habit of dropping gear I want to keep on the retainer..switching through sets to make sure all pieces are accounted for and then going to town on breaking everything down. Jancis Posted February 26, 2015 Share #8 Posted February 26, 2015 Years of progression raiding in another game has given me a compulsive habit to re-equip my gear multiple times in a dungeon. See if I can find you online to help the 'not naked' fund later tonight. Link to comment
Gegenji Posted February 26, 2015 Share #9 Posted February 26, 2015 No warning whatsoever that I was breaking down gear that was in my gear sets. Ouch. A way to help prevent that, if I may offer it, is that as long as it's in your Armory Inventory (as opposed to your normal bags) and part of a saved set... items that make up said set will have a little page icon in the bottom... right? of their slot. This shows that its part of a saved set. Making sure that little page is gone before converting or desynthing an item will make sure that you're not getting rid of anything you use. I've been trying to get materia "naturally" as I level classes, so I will often convert anything after it gets replaced (and is 100%, of course). This also means I'll spam the "update this set" button after changing the loadout to make sure that said item I'm about to destroy isn't part of another set. Because I've had a similar situation happen before myself - albeit it was just a couple accessory items for my CNJ, but still... Not fun. Link to comment

Not sure, I wasn't able to check into any of it before I had to log and get ready for work. I'm hoping for a few decent pieces. Hopefully between the materia, the 20k in gil I have, place the Grand Company tickets I was saving up should be enough to decently equip both classes back up! Link to comment

There's also a few crafters who can likely whip up some level 40 stuff on the cheap. Paying MB prices is a little ridiculous considering you're going to be getting AF at 45, but I hope it works out. Gegenji Posted February 26, 2015 Share #12 Posted February 26, 2015 Hit me up in game tonight if you can. I have a 50 ARM and BSM and a bunch of extra ingots from rushing both to cap, I can probably help regear your Gladiator, at least. Link to comment

That would be awesome, but keep in mind I don't have much in the way of repaying you Who said anything about repaying me? A fellow RPCer crafted me a full set of HQ iron armor back when I was starting out (which I still have, thanks Dev!). So, the least I can do is pay that forward. If I ask you for anything, it'd most likely only be to grab me a material or two (like an Aldgoat Horn or something, some of the recipes have oddball materials) if I'm missing them to make you your gear. Chris Ganale Posted February 26, 2015 Share #15 Posted February 26, 2015 I have full crafting to 50 on Ganale and I'll be spending most of the night farming WoD on him, so I'll cover the gap that Chachan can't get with his crafts. Pro bono. Link to comment

Not sure if I ever ever done it myself, thankfully *laughs* Link to comment
Warren Castille Posted February 26, 2015 Share #17 Posted February 26, 2015 I'm suddenly reminded of sharding my tier shoulders right after Pandaria came out and losing my tier transmog because of it. More sympathy. Link to comment
Melkire Posted February 26, 2015 Share #18 Posted February 26, 2015 This would be the exact reason why I decided a long time ago to always wait until my classes are into their "blues" (read: artifact and other post-50 gear that, for the most part, can't be converted) before breaking gear down for materia. Branson Thorne Posted February 26, 2015 Author Share #19 Posted February 26, 2015 I get the page icon, but when I clicked the icon to break stuff down it only displayed a list, so I did not once think that it was displaying items in a gear set.. Are y'all opening up your armory chest inventory and just double checking the item name form the list, or is there a way to break it down from the inventory? What really sucks is I was in my level 14 miners gear at the time, so yeah still have that......So I guess the only gear that is actually considered safe is equipped gear. Either way, it was just really bad luck on my part coupled with not really paying attention to what I was doing. Luckily I wasn't breaking down some super awesome end game gear and was just breaking down pre-50 gear. Link to comment

Are y'all opening up your armory chest inventory and just double checking the item name form the list, or is there a way to break it down from the inventory? Oh, yeah, I never use the Convert menu itself. I break down my gear from my Armory Inventory exclusively. See, if you right-click on your items, there's a whole list of things it shows - Try On, Meld, Desynth, Link and so forth. The "Convert" - if present (sometimes there's stuff you can't) - option will reduce that item to materia. That way you're looking at it in the inventory and can spot the page icon and make sure you're not destroying those. Link to comment

Gegenji Posted February 26, 2015 Share #22 Posted February 26, 2015 Oh man, I never noticed that, what a waste! Keep in mind that this works for Desynths too - and ARM/BSM desynths are equipment as well. To keep you from reducing your gear to its base components and/or an assortment of demimateria. Kage Posted February 26, 2015 Share #24 Posted February 26, 2015 Definitely, if you can utilize the visual of your Armory Chest. You can "right-click" meld, desynthesis, convert from that area. This way you don't meld a material on the wrong item or desynth/convert an item you have to a gear set. Link to comment
