There's this ice cream joint down the road from me. Christopher's. They serve this thing during the warmer months called a Zombie.

 

It's a 64 oz. Styrofoam cup with vanilla soft-serve, strawberries, chocolate soft-serve, pineapple, vanilla soft-serve, strawberries topped with whipped cream, chocolate sauce and nuts.

 

And a cherry.

 

...ohlawd.

There's a number of lovely cafes, bakeries and patisseries near to where I live and so it's always very tempting to linger and buy something whenever I pass by. They're not the clinical chain stores either - they're the sort that are very friendly, welcoming and craft each dessert by hand which is evident by the quality and taste.

 

Today it was cold and so on my way back from a morning meeting I caved in and ended up buying a loaf of olive bread and a delicious egg custard.

 

It's good that I'm naturally thin and to my credit I only treat myself when I'm actually going somewhere.

Though, living in the great white north (America version), people here are often loath to indulge in treats of the frozen kind, as we are ourselves often frozen. All of our tasty dishes are in some way baked, fried, or otherwise not-cold.

Guess it depends on where in the north you are >_> I grew up on sugar-snow (snow that gets drizzled in maple sap that's been boiled to the point it crystallizes) and snow-cream (snow that gets mixed with cream/milk, a bit of sugar, and some flavorings). What better way to combat 6 feet of snow than to eat it?!

 

Anyways. "Italian ice", you can find as options at some ice cream shops back home (Maine and New Hampshire), but I honestly see more sno-cone stands and shaved ice carts. We had a large Korean population in the area I lived in in New Hampshire, so even the "shaved ice topped with soft serve ice cream and red bean paste and a ton of fruit" option was available. And is delicious.

I suppose I just ain't big on desserts since I don't know of any good places here but on saturday I tutored a lady at work who brought me Easter bread which was delicious.  Was nomming it in Kei's ear for two days.

This thread also reminded me... in addition to Rita's Italian Ice... the Snowball stand down the street from me is probably going to open soon.

 

A snowball is a local thing here, apparently, where it's basically just a snow-cone... except remove that little dinky paper cone and put it in a cup. Now just pack as much of that crushed-to-snow ice as you can into that cup. OK, now pack some more. MORE. Then add artificial flavoring of your choice. Usually stands will have the usual flavorings like cherry, grape, etc. They will also have their own blends, with names that appeal to kids like "Spongebob", "Barney" or my favorite growing up, "G.I. Joe." I can't even for the life of me figure out what G.I. Joe tasted like. And then, you put marshmallow cream on it.

 

Eat it until it melts and becomes essentially kool-aid, which will be handy because there's a 95% chance your plastic spoon will have broken once it reaches the center core of concentrated ice that has formed from the snowball stand attendant's attempt at manual nuclear fusion when packing the ice into the cup.

I have family that lives in Philadelphia, and Rita's are all over that damned place, so I remember them quite vividly from my childhood. However... My general impressions of that place were just "it's alright". I've never really seen what all the hubbub was about. xD

 

I think I'm just not one for liquid sugar and ice, I guess.

tho at the mall on the beach; they have little outside stall/cart jobbies that sell italian ice...they give out samples but then get grumpy when you take the sample and don't actually buy anything....why offer then??? >|

BECAUSE I JUST WNAT TO MAKE IT LOOK NICE WHEN I GIVE YOU THIS. I WANT YOU TO SAMPLE THEN BUY OK.

 

 

 

I really do want to go to the liquid nitro ice cream place tho now.

The frozen treats here are pretty lacking (a bit too northern, I guess). We have a delicious place for snow cones, a few ice cream shops, a ton of frozen yogurt places with the recent craze, and our Coldstone Creamery closed after being open here for only a year or two (RIP Coldstone and all the weight I would have gained).

 

Buuuut, as for local dessert indulgences... we have a shop that makes gourmet Swiss chocolates and every special occasion becomes an opportunity to try to convince my boyfriend to buy me some chocolates *cough*. The chocolate covered strawberries they have in the summer are the best thing in the world. :D

Bit of a necro-bump, sorry >_>

 

As the leading edge of winter storm Ultima swept through a little Connecticut town this afternoon and was already turning the road and sidewalks white, I looked out the window after doing a delivery and saw my first Rita's.

 

And the line of about twenty people at the window, waiting to order. 

 

Ah, New England. How I missed this sort of attitude.
