OH GOD KONDO WHAT HAVE YOU DONE -
It's funny but if it has all the status effects it would be OP, so just balance it for humor's sake >.>
-
I... I never knew how badly I wanted this until right this moment
-
This is it exactly. Honestly, going back to the subject, I would trust SE to flip the script on us and completely change the lore/look/everything from FFXI to FFXIV (Again, looking at you Scholar)
-
FFXI did a lot to change the landscape of how people see the jobs, really. In FFXI Blue Mages HAD SCIMITARS and it just became -the- thing. It really only had to do with the lore they put out (Aht Urgan was their version of Arabian Nights and Blue Mages came out of that expansion) but it became pretty iconic because of it. Beastmaster also got the same treatment, with it's one handed axe. I actually has a friend RAGE because WAR got AXES then worry and fret over whether BST would have the one handed axe if it ever got put into the game (I don't know why WAR had two handed axes in FFXI). Because of the way MMO's are, FFXI forced a certain aesthetic for each class that kind of made a set look. (This isn't true of all classes obviously - BLM, WHM, RDM always looked the same since FF1)
-
Right. There are theives and then there is the job THIEF (Which as a guildy always complains, should really be called TREASURE HUNTER) and most jobs in the Final Fantasy library have "iconic" weapons where if they weren't used as the equippable weapon for that class, a bunch of FF nerds would probably fall over and die (Blue Mage - Scimitar, Red Mage - Rapier, Scholar - Big ol Book, etc etc)
-
I think it's safe to call it a Scimitar, since it's most LIKELY going to be the weapon for Blue Mages. On the very very very off chance that it's not, it's not a huge ass retcon. As a side note, just sometimes... I hate the "What your weapon is, is what you are" deal. What are they gonna do if RDM is a thing? Rapiers? THESE ARE ALL SWORDS SE YOU AIN'T FOOLIN ANYONE.
-
Let me clarify that one because that IS a mechanics issue. Currently, we're assuming the weapon for Blue Mage is going to be "Scimitar" which doesn't exist beyond being called "Swords" for Paladins to use. It's possible later on they'll retcon all the Scimitars models out (They are doing that with Daggers in 2.3 in prep for NIN) but honestly we don't really know what the weapon will be. It's a good chance it's Scimitar though, they haven't changed the weapon of any class as far as I know (SMN doesn't count it doesn't have an iconic weapon)
-
I've said it before, I don't necessarily see anything wrong with the idea, but lore does come with the territory. Where did that sword come from? Scimitars aren't thing in FFXIV currently, so you'd have to explain it. The use of crystals in order to make it work, where did you learn that? You said your clan, well how did your clan learn of this technique? You're building lore automatically. Arabic isn't an Eorzean language, where did that come from? Before you know it you have an entire lore base around a class that you aren't sure will be what you envisioned. I like the fact you're willing to drop it in order to learn Blue Mage once it comes out. Depending on lore, you can always say your clan learned a bastardized version of Blue Mage and when it actually is released into the game you decide to learn the "correct" one. But that would really only work depending on lore. I do agree with Liadan, I wouldn't go running your mouth about it ICly, only telling a select few, because it can easily spiral into your character suddenly being a trainer for all these Blue Mages or becoming the inventor of Blue Mage or something. There should probably be a reason to keep it quiet anyway - be it Garleans or whatever.
-
I'm not talking about game mechanics at all though? Not once have I mentioned the mechanics of a class/job. I've only mentioned the LORE of a job. Those are two very different things. Lore != MEchanics. Lore is the construct on which the universe is built. It's why even though mechanically you can spam Holy in Mor Dhona, LORE WISE you can't even have access to the spell. At all. The OP was saying she wanted to make lore about Blue Mage based on the already available information we have on Blue Mage in other FF games. I was telling her to be wary because that lore could be way off when the actually job comes out (Like Scholar in FFXI and Scholar in FFXIV are two very different jobs spell wise and Lore wise [Mechanically SCH could also be a healer in FFXI so mechanically not too different]). What if Blue Mage comes out and you don't absorb spells from monsters? They just already learned from animals and mimicked the spells? Stuff like that. Sure she could say she still absorbs spells but in FFXIV she wouldn't be a Blue Mage, lore wise. Summoner really is the best example of this, because if it would have came out later we would have had many RPers with full sized Primals as their minions, only to learn later that (Lore wise) you only get access to a piece of the primals power in the form of Egi's.
-
in theory you can be somebody who knows Conjury and Thaumaturgy (White and Black magic is a different monster, since with white magic you need to be able to access the Succor and the Elementals are currently being bitchy about that and Black magic is the void? I'm not 100% on BLM lore here) but in FFXIV you wouldn't be a SCHOLAR. I'm talking about the jobs themselves, not just "some guy who wields a sword" (Which ironically is the name of things in Japanese. "Gladiator" is actually just "Sword User" in Japanese so I believe that was their intent to be vague). She wants to be a BLUE MAGE not some vague mage in the corner, meaning you need specific context for BLUE MAGE. There's a difference between saying your a Sword User and saying your a Paladin. We're talking about very specific, Final Fantasy jobs within the FFXIV lore. Which have their own abilities, their own training regimens, and their own lore that deserve to be respected.
-
Yeah I don't mean it harshly at all. I appreciate you not going immediately on the defensive

Arcanist magic is unaspected, it doesn't have black or white properties. Scholar in the game is based off Arcanist (Or, what's probably more accurate, given the lore of the game Arcanist is based off Scholar teachings). If you're playing a character who can switch between White and Black magic at will, you aren't playing a Scholar in FFXIV's lore. And you can say "then I'm something else" but to be that kinda spits in the face of the lore. If you can be whatever you want, then I can be Superman. Why play RP in a universe with boundaries if you just completely disregard the lore to be whatever you want? The fun is the boundaries, not running around doing whatever you want. I'm not saying OP is doing that, however. Blue Mage is a Final Fantasy staple so it's not like she's saying "I want to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Blue Mage will probably (maybe...) be around eventually and exists within the parameters of Final Fantasy. I think what she's doing sounds fine, generally, I'm just telling her to be careful. There's a slippery slope between "I'm vaguely Blue Mage" and "My people is the inventor of blue mage and I'm gonna teach EVERYBODY cuz I'm the only one who knows it and here are the RULES." I think the OP isn't crossing that line, I'm just discussing in generalities. I'm personally not comfortable with it, myself.

I am slightly flying off on a tangent here, but it kind of sounds like you're focusing a little too much on the name of the class. A thief is someone who steals. There are/have been people roleplaying themselves as thieves; none of them are "SoL" now, any more than someone using the Gladiator class to portray a sword-wielding Templar from Ishgard. It's bizarre, in my opinion, to think that everyone who knows how to use a sword absolutely has to have been trained at the Ul'dahn Gladiator's Guild. So it is with Rogue: not every character in RP is going to have learned their cloak and dagger skills at the Lominsan Rogue's Guild. As for Blue Mage, that's an iffy one. I'd say go for it, with the understanding that saying "this is Blue Magic; this is the only way it's done" and developing a very detailed history for its usage is probably not a very good idea for reasons already given. Historically, it has always has been heavily reliant on mechanics, and those tend to differ from game to game. As a classic FF job, there's every possibility that it'll be implemented at some point in ARR's lifetime. My advice is to leave yourself some breathing room for that possibility. For example: perhaps your character found a vague reference of a High Allagan magus who styled himself a "Blue Mage" using spells learned from monsters. So your character set out to research how such a thing was possible, and found "a" method of doing so - not necessarily "the" method the Blue Mage of old used - and decided to style herself as such. Edit: Appearance-wise, the only game in which Blue Mage had outright Arab-inspired garb has been FFXI. They don't really have a specific aesthetic. That being said, I see no reason why your specific character shouldn't. This is actually more in line with what I'm trying to convey. Let's say, for arguments sake, SCH came out later than launch and a few people started RPing their version of SCH - which would most likely be the version from FFXI. If you played FFXI you know SCH from that game and SCH from this game are so different, it would be like you were playing a completely different class. No faeries (Easy enough retcon, no plenty of people who rp SCH without the faery), The ability to switch between White and Black magic (completely impossible for a SCH to do here, since they use Arcanist), both healers and damage dealers but not at the same time - having to switch to Light Arts or Dark Arts. It's a completely different class then the one we got in FFXIV. God, I'm actually trying to imagine what people would have said Summoner was if it hadn't been released and I'm pretty sure no one would have gotten that right. Just a bunch of rpers walking around with full sized Garuda's. I'm not telling people not to do it, I just think it's risky. Tread carefully.
-
Am I the only one who isn't comfortable with people RPing classes that don't exist? I mean we just don't know what SE is going to do. Look at Thief, if a bunch of people who decided to rp it before it was announced, they'd be SoL now because SE has come in and said Thief wouldn't work lore wise so they changed it to rogue and all rogues turn into Ninja. That's a lot of retconning.

I'm not saying Ul'dah isn't popular. in fact if you read my post above: TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE, It's why we set up the Rum N Rumble in Mist and when the NB do go to Taverns, you'll find us in Limsa more often. Now-a-days, since our house is in Lavender Beds, you may find us in Gridania too. It's us trying to spread the wealth a little. I think maybe those of us who don't really like Ul'dah should try to come up with a plan to spread it out more. I know, I know, it's more work - but I think the rp community can benefit from more places to rp, then having everyone feel like they have to be a Brass Blade/Sultansworn/Syndicate member just to get into RP. Because there are people who don't care about that sort of thing and hate Ul'dah, they just have a quieter voice because they don't know where to go. This isn't about cannibalizing the Ul'dah scene. Yall can have your city and the stories that go along with it, this is about wrangling more people who don't want to go there and have no options otherwise. IN FACT, Rurutani DID ask that question you told him to ask and he was beat down by a bunch of people going "WHATS WRONG WITH ULDAH" First sentence in his post: I know Ul'dah's the hot spot, and Limsa coming in second (I guess?) But I wonder why places like Gridania, Coerthas, or Mor Dhona don't have much if any rp going on there?

I run with two monks regularly, one who helps the FC clear Twintania regularly. It's absolutely possible but the Monk (Or any melee) HAS to be more wary of their surroundings. You can still get the snakes down in time without the magical caster LB. The Monk or the DRG should limit break on of the SECOND set of snakes that drops, and that should give your team enough time to dps it down. Monks should always be wary of the stacks the snakes give, or you'll die during the transition from Snakes to Twisters. Run away from the snake when it's about to die. I know the instinct is to stay and wail at it, but you can't dps when your dead. For Twisters/dreads - this is probably the hardest phase, you want to be near Twin and wailing on her during Twisters (Our monk runs in a small circle while Twisters is up so he doesn't path with the tank) then run AWAY when you know dreadknight is going to spawn, if you don't run away fast enough and you get stunned, the paladin won't be able to stun it enough before it kills you and the raid will wipe because if you die there isn't enough dps to compensate. So gat away from the center when you know dreads is coming, and run to the edge of the arena. I don't know about hate really, as long as your a good Melee then it doesn't matter in the end. I run with 2 monks and a DRG and have cleared T5 and T6 with both of them. It's really just learning the fight and knowing your job. Having a monk who knows what they are doing mechanics wise is boss because Monk dps. MMMMM. Uhh... I'm not sure if I helped at all (Since I run bard) maybe I should drag Kondo to this thread...

...I really think that you, and others, should talk to people like Gharen, Askier, Aya, Cedric, Verad, etc., before making this kind of assumption. The political intrigue that results from tensions between Blades/Sultansworn/Syndicate/etc. is a major feature of roleplay in Ul'dah... but you don't have to be a member to get involved. Hell, that's not even all of the RP that Ul'dah has to offer. And that's not even getting into Thanalan as a whole. THe problem is that line right there. It is a BIG deal in Ul'dah roleplay and something not everyone want to get involved in. It's not an insult, it's just the truth. Giving people more options isn't a bad thing, here. I'm just stating a fact - the Brass Blades/Sultansworn/Sydicate thing is a HUGE thing in Ul'dah and some people may just not want to be involved and have other options. I know Aya is a waitress at the Quicksand, which is obviously easy to get into RP with because everyone goes to the quicksand. She's probably had her share of dealing with the Holy Trinity above. If you are a player in uldah you deal with those three things automatically, whether to you want to or not. This is just an idea for another OPTION.

GIVE THEM BACK! *RUNS* :cactuar: :cactuar: :cactuar: :cactuar: It was Lummmmm...... *Keeps running* PS- *collapses laughing out loud as a FC inside joke has suddenly overtaken the thread.* We pass the barrels around in this FC, therefore Liadan will never know who has them =D. ~~~ Some of yall Ul'dah folks are getting awfully defensive about Ul'dah... Anyhoo, we can try to see what we can do. I know my FC doesn't go into Ul'dah often but we aren't exactly the event setter uppers either... I can try to see a way around that or promote everyone going into Taverns MORE (We'll just take over Limsa kthanks). Fallgourd Float used to be a really good spot for pickup RP before 2.2, so maybe now that Wineport is a ghost town now we can relocate there. HMM ideas.

No shout outs to Ferah Fenias, Fillion Fenias, and Lho'to Bajeera for deciding to kill someone in Armi's house by... burning down Armi's house. Yall suck. It was fun and it's rare I actually get to be a player instead of a GM, so not knowing what was going on was awful just spiffy. X'havir Vahl - For being the reason the house was burned down. You took it in stride. Roleplayed it well. M'sato Tia - for happening to be in the house at the time whoops. To M'wanthala Kryn, Liadan Summerfield, Haru Qwey, and Roh'to Nahl who came to see what the damage was even though they didn't have to. Whoo. Plots.

Ermigawd, Armi. Liadan hates Ul'dah, too. I just want to plant more flowers there, personally. Alas, Armi actually likes Ul'dah. She likes the hussle and bussle of the city, but even with her I only tend to RP in the Goblet in her "House", the WING house, or the Grim house (If one can get her in there anyway) because Armi isn't really a tavern crawler and even though she likes the city, she's way too shy and awkward to talk to strangers. Loki doesn't like Ul'dah at all, generally stays in Limsa and when she does go to Ul'dah people always ask her about Ul'dah lore and she constantly has to go "I don't care about your dumb city." TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE, It's why we set up the Rum N Rumble in Mist and when the NB do go to Taverns, you'll find us in Limsa more often. Now-a-days, since our house is in Lavender Beds, you may find us in Gridania too. It's us trying to spread the wealth a little. I think maybe those of us who don't really like Ul'dah should try to come up with a plan to spread it out more. I hate Ul'dah. Yeah I said it

I spy so much oocly, all my friends have come to expect me going "Oh sorry, I saw these people rping and stopped to listen." >.> I really love stories. And I love finding those amazing, well-written and lore appropriate stories that may get lost in the hussle and bussle. When I find those they can make me think and get creative myself and make me want to rp. I LOVE finding other people's stories, especially when they work within the confines of the lore. I love it, you guys are better than TV.
