Crafting in the Middle of Fates, Fights, etc

Crafting near merchants or the markets is simply done because supplies are close at hand should they need more for their recipes. Its completely down to convenience ^^ -
Opinions on the V.O. for This Game
K'nahli replied to Tobias Nightbringer's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I may have strong opinions but my standards are anything but above par. Granted I cannot make too many claims and presumptions being that I sampled but one single scene, but past experience leads me to not expect anything different. Once I get my laptop back I would happily make a video for you offering comparisons and trying to explain my point(s) more clearly with examples if any of you would like. My recollections of the voices are vague at best, given that I was nowhere near impressed enough to allow them to be burned into my memory (>w<), but I don't think I've gone amiss with any of them other than under-explaining them. As for yourself, Zyru, I won't combat your personal opinion but if you'd care to watch the cutscene for the Scions('Where the Wild Rose Blooms' I think it is called), where they all introduce themselves, can you honestly tell me that the voice acting in that scene is in any ways believable or impressive? Minfillia's voice in particular was so old and mundane to me. For the record, I think I listened to 'most' of it up until after everyone introduced themselves. And if you still think its fine, then try listening to the japanese version and comparing the standard of work, emotion, tone and youthful sound and let us know which you think best represents the characters' personalities. That is an incredibly good point and one that I could never answer myself unfortunately, but it is certainly interesting. However, regardless of 'literal comprehension', I feel the acting itself in all other senses is rich with life in comparison to English. Not quite. It plays a partial role indeed, but as you say, voice-to-face presumptions can be quite inaccurate. Rather I am thinking of a direct correlation between the voice, the way things are spoken and the actual personality. I must apologise though, being without my actual laptop completely demotivates me to type as much as I'd like to on the issue, so until then I'll just give a brief example that I think may help explain my point better. Thancred is young, flirty, enthusiastic, happy and confident. Now he could have an absolute range of voices that could do that personality justice. However, would you really think that the likes of Morgan Freeman, David Hayter or Liam Neeson could suit him even though they all have great voices? No, of course not... or at least I'd hope not. Aside from the age thing that I mentioned, their types of voices just don't suit his energy nor his charisma. It'd be like(to use an extreme example) trying to justify a suicidal character having a super optimistic voice full of bubbles and rainbows. VAs, like any normal actor, should tune themselves with the character they are playing, their personality, their traits, everything. Not just think: "Okay, relatively young male... thats enough for me". I'm not totally sure I understand your point of views either. What does a voice actor need for you? Just to sound the correct age? -
*squeals with delight* (Alex, I may have found you something at last ;w; ) The conventional methods might not be suited to Garleans I guess so perhaps a different styled meeting might have to be arranged in order to be more realistic and to justify it correctly. I'm sure we could think of something ^^ In any case, I assumed that you wouldn't be actually RP'ing any of this any time soon, but just in case you planned to, you should know that I have limited access to the net right now(since I despise this laptop) and no access to the game until I have my laptop's charger port repaired.

Opinions on the V.O. for This Game
K'nahli replied to Tobias Nightbringer's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I have zero trust for english voice acting in games like these nor for anime either. I immediately chose Japanese VAs for this game without even sampling the english. I was very satisfied as usual, Japanese VAs never disappoint I find. I recently played a cutscene with the english voicing just to torture myself though. I chose the scion scene to hear each of them. Needless to say I was horrified. What makes good voice acting? When the tone and accent actually suits the character. It is especially bad with females but I swear that english VAs just never take their job seriously outside of big franchises/console games. Thancred is meant to be a youthful, desirable male but he sounded nothing of the sort from what I recall. Papalymo sounded like a jolly, little leprechaun whose voice would never serve me any immersion in any respect that I can imagine. Yda sounded a bit annoying I think. Granted she's kinda meant to be a bit eccentric but the VA didn't do her justice and made her seem more insufferable than anything. Mysterious Elezen might have been 'okay'. Y'shtola certainly wasn't the worst but, as with so, so, many english female VAs, she sounded too old. Minfillia was the same but to a much greater extent. The sentences were far too solid and unemotional, totally lacking anything that says "I am not reading from a script". Its not about having high standards. I don't sit in front of a cutscene for the first time, waiting to critically judge the work of the VAs. I hear the voice and wince and recoil in horror as I listen to what the developers are trying to pass as 'quality acting'(in cases where I didn't like it). I don't know how these people have earned themselves jobs outside of fan-made games/productions. I simply can't imagine how people could take it seriously, let alone subject themselves to it. I have a question though. How many of you heave heard the English VAs and find them bad/questionable/lackluster or simply 'okay' and still choose to listen to them over a different language that could easily offer a better experience? Not once have I found the Japanese language lacking myself. The VAs are incredible. They are emotional in their dialogue, TOTALLY suiting their characters' personalities and age and just brings everything to the table that you'd come to want and expect. I don't understand why anyone would say: "Oh, well English is my language so I best listen to it even though I don't really like it". Why are subtitles so bad, especially when you spend 90% of the game reading what the characters say anyways? -
Hahahaha, nice point. Anyways, I have no intention of RP'ing anyone on the Garlean side but one of my characters may prove useful to you for the sake of getting information, locating people or even acquiring them(assuming said person can play along). He has no real allegiances or loyalties so it pretty much boils down to coin for him. Maybe something could come out of this for both of us! ^^ I sure hope so at least. Good luck with your idea, i hope it works out great for you and all involved.

(Obligatory Apology.... see? I feel bad even using an example.... here!) That is where lies the problem though. You don't want to ruin someone's time by offending them with the tone of your language but you don't want to be less true to your character or to be unrealistic. Lets create an example(for the record, nothing like my character I mentioned): "Get out of my face, woman. As if I would associate with the likes of you.." versus "Get the fuck out of my face, you tramp. As if I would have affiliation with a diseased-ridden, whore like yourself." The second example demonstrates a more harsh and brute-ish personality but could easily be seen as very distasteful to many people. This is where it starts affecting RP. Where do you draw the lines and where should you make exceptions? Allow characters to have more extreme personalities and enhance realism or be more soft for the sake of being as harmless as possible? Softening personalities isn't just about being less realistic either, it also affects interpretations of a character. In the first example there is still room for doubt. Maybe the guy is having a really bad day or has good reason to dislike the person. The second example however leaves me with no sympathy for him and results in me looking down on him as disgusting, same way my characters would.

What I am talking about hardly extends far beyond the in-game foul language though. When I say excessive I don't mean anything grossly graphic. In fact, that'd probably be OOC for him. He'd be borderline lecherous to women in fact which is a good example of how lore-friendly terms can feel even a bit too much coming from my character even if he is horrible like that.
-
This topic is actually one that concerned me slightly. I have a character who is an elitist jerk who would have no problem using vulgar terms. The only thing is that OOCly I would have problems using those terms and can see myself avoiding it in the future. Its not as if I shy away from swearing myself(though I try not to do it), but I'd worry that I may offend others, particularly if my character decided to be particularly vulgar in attempts to offend or provoke someone else. In addition to that, I'd be even more reluctant to do so around my friend whom I regularly RP with... for reasons that may sound silly, so lets just say that I would want to avoid being excessive or graphic in said person's presence even more so. Its not that I find swearing to be necessary to a character, but I do find it shows a lot about their personality and I don't like hiding personality traits or making characters less realistic ;;

Did you have a bad experience with someone who expected you to be aware of their thoughts?

*relieved* =w= ;;;; I thought I had annoyed you.

K'nahli blinked twice as she K'ailia's words pierced through her. She remained calm in her response and showed humility in spite of K'nahli's temper-infused words. The young archer's wine-coloured, gem-like eyes glistened in the fading light as she studied her younger sister's smaller, almost silhouetted frame intently. Feelings of both remorse and embarrassment rose up within her, causing her to shield part of her face with her hand, part feigning as though she simply found herself in deep thought. "It wasn't my intent to belittle your thoughts, K'ailia" K'nahli spoke in a softer voice once again, avoiding eye contact with her sister. "I just want such discussions to be taken seriously and not pursued on a whim." K'nahli turned her back on the girls and walked slowly towards the corner railing, each step letting out a small, delayed echo. She gripped the two, meeting rails firmly in her hands, stretching her arms out in the process as she once again observed the horizon as though it served her as a method of inspiration to help gather her thoughts. "We may yet find that your course is best... let us just not be hasty and consider all" K'nahli finally spoke, her back still turned to her sisters. Swiveling around on the spot, she pressed her back gently against the two railings and allowed herself to slide down into a seated position to once again face the girls. "Pray forgive me sisters, I meant no offence by my words."

I see ^^ Admittedly I wouldn't share the same level of desire to help people with runs on this game as I would have on M:H/Vindictus, possibly because of how much more massive this one is in population, but I can't get my head around 'helping' someone who I assume is having trouble doing a dungeon run and then stretching out an open palm before them afterwards and expecting them to pay you for it.
-
Hahaha, that's surreal. I know some places, generally quieter ones, have many people that are more friendly and social but I hardly expected it from large places or cities. I applied the same logic to Ul'dah and Limsa with that in mind. There is so much going on and there are so many people that it doesn't seem like much sense to me that anyone would deliberately walk up to people and essentially invite themselves to the conversation just like that. However having said that, its not so much an idle moment like waiting in line when it comes to many RP scenes. While what you said may be mostly unseen by me and others, yet totally acceptable, I'd be almost certainly taken aback if I was talking to a friend or two while sitting down to a meal or whatever(so totally to ourselves lets say) and someone just decides to sit down next to us. Sure they could be nice and may make for a nice addition to the conversation but that still doesn't strike me as common enough to be called 'usual' or 'normal'.
-
I guess I am the only one who also is shocked to see runs being sold but okay @-@
-
Jumping in on random conversations can suit some personalities but as Asyria said, it is not usual/normal. Nor does choosing not to do so make you an 'introvert', which I'll just add, is an incorrect term since it has nothing to do with social anxiety. However, I think certain topics can interest other RPers and maybe enforce them to break that norm and involve themselves or find reason to stumble in to the scene without implying they were eavesdropping or overheard anything. Aside from that, it is a clear indicator that RP is going on and it'd be much nicer to be able to see where RP is active rather than walking though an area filled with 'open' RP but no-one being able to join a scene because the others decided to invite interested RPers to a party, leading to late joiners assume nothing is going on.

K'nahli narrowed her eyes in annoyance following K'mana reply, shooting her a piercing glare that told enough of her thoughts before she even began to speak. "You would patronize me, sister?" K'nahli challenged K'mana sharply, stare unfaltering, as her focus became directed solely towards her. "I would not insist that there resides a riskless resolve to the matter, I simply would have you know that such typical suggestions are not necessarily the best course of action just because they have been done in the past. You stand there claiming that the elders cling only to tradition and shed less concern for the tribe's well-being when it is you who used our past nomadic tendencies as part of your reason to voyage further northwards into Thanalan." K'nahli critiqued the miqo'te firmly, unintentionally growing more hostile in her words. "You would say that migrating is a necessity that best be done sooner rather than later and I would agree, but that does not excuse rashly jumping to conclusions as though they have not already been considered by those who were well aware of the issue before we even saw reason to worry" K'nahli continued. She had no particular reason to defend the elders but she couldn't help but feel their judgement was being completely undermined as though they were blind fools, hopeless in their adamance to cling to mindless repetitive mannerisms, when in truth they have been keeping the tribe thriving well and strong for many cycles. Gripping the railing with her hand closest to it, she slowly turned her head to look out over the desert in momentary contemplation before continuing to speak. A soft breeze rolled towards the tower, catching the girl's fringe and locks that were tied in modest, silver ornaments, causing them to sway gently across her face. After a brief moment's silence, she continued. "This is our family we are talking about. Our decision as a whole will affect our fate. We are long past the point of trial and error." She spoke a little more softly this time as her words resounded deep within her heart, reflecting on the reality that were these troubling times. Almost an insurance of further loss... further heartache. Another brief moment of silence past before she returned her watch to K'mana, her expression and tone abandoning the previous softness. "So forgive me, sister, for not eagerly supporting an idea that could just as easily condemn my family to their premature deaths just as easily as it could save us. Do not defend reasoning with strength. Strong as we are, it is foolish to needlessly expose ourselves to danger, and that is to forget how much weaker we have become since Carteneau." K'nahli spat at K'mana defiantly, still vexed by her response as she turned to face K'ailia. "And if stocking food were possible then I hardly see need for concern" K'nahli replied coldly, resting her palm on her temple as she shut her eyes, already frustrated from the debate after her long and tiring day. "I see not why you both challenge me with arguments for tradition when frankly I care little for it. I do not defend the behaviours of our ancestors and treat it as a sacred guide to dictate my own life. I defend only the alternate and perhaps unspoken methods to our elders' decision not to migrate. And while it may yet be our best opportunity, I stress again, I spoke only to say that it is not a simple solution worth pursuing on a whim."

Your stout and loveable chocobo (or other mount)

I didn't tell you ;_; I simply said that I had guessed you would and was even happy that you kept Miah alive through her original name but you wanted to change it! -
Your stout and loveable chocobo (or other mount)
K'nahli replied to Swift Nightclaw's topic in RP Discussion
My miqo'te called hers Suna(Sue-nah) which means 'desert' in Japanese. That has no purpose or intention ICly though, I just looked through other languages for inspiration and I liked the Japanese pronunciation of it. http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/6894/h73w.png[/img] My Paladin hy'ur named his 'Blaze' which I think is both typical and suitable, nothing special ^^ http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/2760/zngj.jpg[/img] My Warror hy'ur named his Cimmerian(Sih-mare-ee-an) since I figured he'd name his something darker. I think I'll use parts of Odin's barding for his chocobo, hoho~ http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/7708/sxvo.png[/img] -
((OOC Note: Loooooooong... sorry)) K'nahli sighed in response to the two opinions put forth. Though it may have sounded condescending to the other girls(partially due to her initial irritation), rather it was because she wasn't as quick to undermine the elders, little though she felt the need to defend them. "It's not as simple as either of you would imply" she voiced her thoughts, folding her arms snugly across her chest in attempts to combat the sudden drop in temperature as the remaining desert heat quickly dissipated with the fleeting sun. "The elders may be stubborn but they are certainly anything but foolish" she continued, her eyes slowly hopping from girl to girl as she spoke earnestly. "You cannot merely compare our current situation to times of our distant past. Our tribe migrated to Sagoli for just the reason you have mentioned. More of Thanalan became populated. It matters little how ordinary or harmless most outsiders may be in nature. All within the tribe know little of the dealings with any but tribekin and traders. Even were we all somehow prepared for such an adjustment there is no assurance that we wouldn't be further risking the tribe by making them more easily accessible to our enemies. I neglect to even think about how active the Amal’jaa are in the outer reaches of Thanalan". She placed a hand over her temple, gripping it as though attempting to soothe a throbbing headache, as she thought deeply on her own words, voicing her concerns with a firm belief that Thanalan may not prove to be the ideal situation as was implied. "Were we to be left with no choice... and resolved to see your ideas as the safer option in time, we still would lack sufficient food to permit such a journey. We could may well lose a third of the tribe during the migration alone... and that is with no heed paid to any disruptions that may ensue. K'nahli paused for a moment as her glance fell to K'mana, reminding her biefly of the girl's alternative suggestion. "Frankly speaking, moving eastwards towards the ocean seems the most befitting solution put forth. Little do our hunters know of fishing, but being that most are adept with either spears or bows they could well adapt and learn without much disrupt". K'nahli shifted her posture, now resting her chin on her fist as she thought a little more deeply on the idea. "With that said, I would still view it as a temporary solution at best. The little game that we still procure are more abundant in the deeper reaches of Sagoli whereas the coast would limit us to desert anglers and fishing... it could just as easily leave us worse off. I believe we have no knowledge of other tribes that have sought a similar lifestyle... which leads me to wonder how they also fare..." K'nahli closed her eyes for a moment in deep thought before slowly raising her head to look upon her sisters once more. "Your intentions are admirable K'ailia, but naught is as easy as you would think. I do not see the risks of your solution to be outweighed by the benefits. While I have no wish to watch my sisters slowly fall prey to the Sagoli sands I have no intention of sending them to sooner meet Azeyma with promises that I cannot guarantee".

OOC Note:

I didn't like anything except #1 for my miqo'te and my two hy'urs.

((OOC Note: The first part is prior to most if not all of you arriving at the gate, so K'nahli isn't particularly late)) The cooling sun slowly began its gradual descent, sinking ever so slowly from its perch high in the sky to once again be consumed by the sea of sand below. *klunk* A semi-rusted can gave a low, clattering sound as it was struck from it's position atop a rock by one of K'nahli's arrows before being reunited with the other targets that had been felled moments before it on the arid desert floor. K'nahli let out a sigh in fatigue as she lowered her bow, satisfied that she had trained enough for one evening. Wiping the sweat from her brow, she turned to face the glowing, ball of fire that hung in the Thanalan sky as it slowly began succumbing to the cold and dark embrace of night. Honestly speaking, she didn't want to go to the supposed meeting. She was tired and had little patience for childish fantasies of saving the tribe on a whim. K'nahli sighed once more, now turning her gaze in the direction of the Sagoli gate. However, she knew that she couldn't disrespect her sister by not even humouring her with her presence. She remained doubtful but striving to pull some optimism from the moment she resolved with the hope that maybe she could be proved wrong. Latching her bow around her nimble frame once more, K'nahli began her lengthy trek towards the gate ------------ K'nahli arrived at the destination shortly before nightfall completely engulfed Sagoli. A shimmering beam of light struggled to continue illuminating the shape-shifting terrain as it peeked out above the dunes behind them. A few people had turned up it appeared, K'mih included. K'nahli was likely the last to arrive but she didn't appear to be late, an assumption drawn from the fact that the young miqo'te females continued talking amongst themselves, some happily, unknown to the older one's arrival. Drawing closer, she confirmed the identities of everyone present. "I hope the travel was worth it, K'ailia. The secrecy seems somewhat undue to me" K'nahli's familiar, irritated tone announced her presence to the younglings as she exited the shadow of the sheltering dune she had descended from. The pale light collected mysteriously on her face, allowing her identity to be clearly revealed had it not been obvious already from her voice. "The sands shift hastily this night.." she announced in a slightly hushed tone, her face turning to analyze the ever-changing sea around her briefly before glancing back towards her fellow sisters. "Let us not waste too much time. What would you say to us?"

^ *curious* ;w; I don't know whether to be grateful that I haven't been targeted by such people yet or upset that my Miqo hasn't been deemed pretty enough to consider it hahaha. In seriousness though, how are FATEs rp'd. Did you just happened to be RP'ing nearby and then behaved as though you heard a commotion and ran to the aid of the wailers?

Ohh, this sounds interesting. May I ask what it is? I'm looking forward to people using homes as shops and larger ones for taverns or inns. The possibilities make my mouth water @-@
