  1. Welcome to the RPC! First off, I can understand your dungeon anxiety. My gf has the same issue and she never does a dungeon unless I'm there to be the tank or healer, or unless she can do it solo 'cause she's overleveled it. Now to your questions: 1) I don't know how many people, if any, RP on Lich. What I can tell you is that Omega is the de facto unofficial RP server for EU, and with the new grouping, the Chaos datacenter in general ended up having in it the servers with the most RP population (Omega in primis), but Lich isn't part of it and ended in the Light datacenter. Regarding your FC, unless they have one on Omega too I'm afraid you'd have to leave it if you decide to server transfer (if you're really unsure I suggest making an alt on Omega to test the waters there, and then decide ) There's also an active RP discord for the Chaos datacenter. 2) Those terms can be used in a couple of meanings. It can relate to how often one stays In Character once ingame, or to how strict they adhere to the official Lore and how deep they delve in it during their storylines. Or both things at the same time. Someone who logs in and goes around being In Character all the time can be considered a heavy (if not hardcore) RPer, for example. In MMOs, the RP takes place in real-time, so the usual conventions are to write what a character says in the /s channel and what they do or their descriptions in the /em channel (unless a certain situation requires another established IC channel). Also, to not slow down things too much and avoid clutter in the chat while RPing, the emotes are usually kept somewhat short (you're not the first to ask as of late, I'm thinking I should put up a simple and short guide on the basics I wrote for another person, for everyone to see xD). 3) I don't think it would affect things much, as I believe we are all on the same servers (unless someone more knowledgeable on the tech aspects of the game can correct me, I'm fairly new to it). So if you have a keyboard with which to type more comfortably, especially during RP (sometimes it can get really hectic), you shouldn't have any problems.
  2. Welcome! I will leave the answer to your Roegadyn question to those more knowledgeable on the subject, but generally speaking you don't have to always follow the generic lore description about a certain race. It usually gives you an insight on the more traditional aspects of a certain race or sub-race, but there's also people of every race everywhere and doing anything (obviously with varying degrees and concentrations, but still). As for your character building question, that pretty much is up to you. For example, I haven't started to RP yet 'cause I'd like to see the whole MSQ first and avoid myself spoilering something through RP (which usually takes place on par with the latest story update timeline-wise) in case some events of the MSQ get mentioned, since I'm fairly new to the game. But if you aren't new to the game and already played through the story, you can jump into RP at any time while leveling your character. Some people (myself included) have a specific idea from the get go of what their character would usually wear, and wait until the character is high level enough to use that glamour/equipment before starting RPing. Others are content to create a satisfying enough wardrobe with what they can use even at low level and jump straight into RP, updating the character wardrobe as they level up and get acces to higher level gear. Especially if you have a story reason for your character to go through different stages.
  3. It certainly leaves you open to a good deal of character development. Especially if you take the route of discovering things alongside your character, knowing where you'd like to end but leaving the journey up to be shaped with time as you go.
  4. I was actually supposed to type 7th Umbral, typoed it badly. But since we're at it, making sure my understanding of the clalendar system works is right. Basicly, the years of an Era continue being counted up to it's Umbral/Astral stage shift, at which point it resumes from year 1. (akin to how Tolkien's calendar works for Middle Earth)
  5. I've been playing for only a few months myself, and am still going through the HW MSQ, but by talking with people on the Chaos RP discord I can at least safely reply for what concerns the dates. The Sixth Astral era ended when the Calamity struck. The Seventh Umbral ony lasted until the end of the 2.0 MSQ, as declared on the occasion you mentioned yourself. Since the beginning of the ARR MSQ mentions 5 years have passed from the Calamity, it's safe to assume that if not 6 years, at least an unspecified number of months have passed beyond the 5 years count. Apparently, at some point between the HW and SB MSQ the plot puts the timeline in a sort of temporal bubble, leaving the current official date unclear. Can't say on the US side, but the EU community at least overall agrees to consider the time flowing along the RL one and use the actual release dates of the expansions, to allow a more consistent character aging and development. So from the beginning of the HW arc, it's commonly agreed to consider 4 years have passed, setting us in the year 1581 (give or take a few months as usual, if you continue the counting from the Sixth Astral as some people do), or more simply year 4 (and some) of the Seventh Astral Era for example. Obviously, this is all complimented by leaving vague dates when referring specific MSQ events, if their mention ever pops up during RP. EDIT: Dang it, Unnamed anticipated me as I was submitting EDIT2: Corrected a typing error after Unnamed Mercenary pointed it out and cleared another sentence.
  6. Welcome back! Omega has the bulk of RPers for what concerns the EU servers. So, yes, that would be a good choice to look at. Luckily, to my knowledge at least, all the EU worlds that had the most RP activity ended up in the same Chaos data center after the new re-arrangement, so with the new world visit system it's fairly easy to find RP if you are on Chaos, regardless of your native world. That said, if you plan on making a new character I would suggest doing it directly on Omega, especially if you plan to join a FC at some point since that can't be done cross-world.
  7. I got the same version, and can confirm you'll get the 30 days of free playtime once you activate.
  8. I brainfarted, I was sure I saw Zodiark on Chaos the other day but evidently was simply thinking of the old single datacenter. Then it all depends on when Lumy first created the character. No free transfer, but still doable in case.
  9. Considering they mentioned the stars in dreams, I thought it would be more in line with the Ishgardian astrology, from what I've seen of it until now anyway. I haven't tried the astrologian class at all yet, so have to admit I'm completely clueless on its lore so far ^^.
  10. I'll PM you with some examples and basic guidelines, as soon as I have some time to write them up.
  11. You could always use the World visit feature to come RP on Omega if you really don't want to reroll there. As I said, it isn't that much work to get back to the point you were at, especially since on a trial you can't get past lvl 35, so that would be the most work to do (I don't know how much you lvl'd up so far ^^). If you decide to try and reroll on Omega in the end, feel free to add me to your friends list (Jhuxohr Steelstorm). I could power you through some roulette queues as I like to tank (I know, I'm one of the weird fews xD) to help you speed things up if you want.
  12. I'm not yet an expert on Hydaelyn lore, but from what I have been able to learn (especially ingame, I've started in Gridania myself) so far, your backstory sounds plausible. Especially if after she was abandoned as a child, the elementals themselves vouched in favor of saving a wronged innocent life and Elfene (being a ranger) felt it as a calling from the elementals since Celestitte was left on her doorstep. As for the astrologian part, you'll learn and understand a lot more about them once you start traveling to Coerthas and run into their observatorium (I've decided for a completely different route for my char, but have to say the intricacies of Ishgardian lore and astrology are really interesting).
  13. 1. Both the basic and complete versions have 30 days of gametime free, only the Stormblood expansion and Shadowbringers don't come with a free month of sub. (at least to my knowledge) 2. As Maril said, the EU free transfers are over, although since you are on a trial it won't be too much work making a new char on Omega unless you already reached the trial lvl cap of 35. But even in that case it won't be too much of a burden (done that before rerolling while on my trial after reaching lvl 27 ). And on that note, I'm on Omega too, so feel free to hit me up if you want
  14. Welcome aboard! About your typing questions: in mmos you have to take into account that while ingame the action takes place in real time, so it is more akin to acting rather than writing. That said, the overall basic conventions are typing dialog in the Say channel (through the /s chat command, or keeping the channel as the primary one through the chat options) and indicating your character's actions and descriptions with custom emotes (through the /em command). Usually, thoughts or inner dialog are not written out as others would not be able to know what is going on in your character's head (unless they use some mind-reading magic or the like, at least ). If you really want it to transpire, the trick is usually describe your character's expressions and/or body language so that it could hint others on what is going on if they are perceptive enough, just like it happens in RL. These are just the basics, to which there are a miriad of little variations depending on personal style. If you'd like to have more details or want to discuss it more, feel free to PM me.
  15. Welcome to FFXIV and Omega! If you're looking for connections there's an active Discord for the Chaos datacenter RP (where Omega resides), I could send you a link via PM if you want
  16. I can't say for Siren specifically, but this is what I usually do and advise regardless of setting or mmo where I start to RP from scratch. Just throw yourself in! Start with looking for the more open events or places where people hang about the most to socialize and that make sense for your characters to be at, and just let them be themselves. It might take some time depending on both your characters and others', but I've always found out that sooner or later you'll be part of the RP circles naturally as you develop interactions both IC and OOC from the ground up. Also, I find this is the most natural and gradual way of getting in (or back in) the RP scene unless you find a group of people beforehand on Discords or forums with whom you share a RP concept and can start the ball rolling with straight away. Also, if you have your own guild already, maybe try and organize some open events yourselves that could attract a variety of character concepts and open yourselves up for new contacts.
  17. Judging by the new server clustering and with the server visits opening up, if you usually play during NA peak times I believe remaining on a world that will become part of the Crystal data center is your best bet since Mateus and Balmung are currently the two biggest RP populated ones and will be available for visit within Crystal. Omega, although to my knowledge the most RP populated EU world, is in the EU data center so will be left out of those NA servers aggregation.
  18. Hello everynoe! I've been trying out FFXIV for the first time since a couple of days with a Trial account together with my gf (we're really liking it so far!), and since I always like to plan ahead in the case I (or we) decide to buy the game and become full players, I have a couple of questions about the servers. I'm a long time RPer and even if nowadays I often don't have the time to actively RP as much as I'd like, I prefer to set myself up on a server with a good RP population (both for the generally nicer communities and because of the obvious RP opportunities ). Being in the EU, and after some research on the web, we rolled our characters on the Omega server. It seems most info is a bit dated by now though, so I was wondering if Omega is still the main RP aggregation server currently or if it has shifted. Considering the peculiarity of FFXIV, I'd like to make sure before committing too much time into a character on a "wrong" server. And now, since you've been kind enough to read through my blabbering, I'm gonna share something about myself with the template, even if I'm still just evaluating the game. MMORPG background No idea what the average age around here is, but whenever I talk about this I'm starting to feel old on the matter. My first MMO experience was with the still 2D isometric world of Ultima Online. I then passed through most of the major western market MMOs: Everquest II, Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, City of Heroes/Villains, Warhammer Online, LotRO, Age of Conan, Rift, SWTOR, Guild Wars 2, ESO, Wildstar. My recently most active ones are SWTOR and ESO since I can enjoy both without needing to have multiple subs active, and WoW now and then to check the major patches when RL allows me to have enough free time to not waste most of the sub time. RP Experience This dates even more back, to a short time with the p n' p D&D 2nd edition before moving onto the 3-3.5ed. As far as MMO-RP is concerned, once again my first experience was on Ultima Online and I've RPed on every other MMO I've played (more on some, less on others.). My longest experiences have been on SWG, AoC, WoW and SWTOR. I also do LARP, althogh RL forced me to dial back a lot on it in the last couple of years. I've done very little forum RP, usually to compensate for times when the group I was RPing with couldn't get all online for extended periods, so we could move the stories forward even with those unable to get ingame without forcing people to have their characters stuck. Character ideas/info None so far, still learning the setting ropes. Although I'm currently playing an Elezen and if I get to buy the game the Dark Knight job really intrigues me. How did you learn about the coalition? By searching "Best FFXIV EU server choice for a roleplayer" on google. What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? (e.g. Light, medium, or heavy) I used to always reply to this with "heavy", but nowadays it's really just the kind RL allows me to be. Unless we're considering it towards lore adherence, setting realism/immersion and the such. In that case it'll always be "heavy", I don't like it any other way regardless of setting. If I RP, is to live it how the setting writers originally intended it (taking advantages of all the lore loopholes to fuel creativty within reason, of course ). Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc.) I'm beginning a career in voice acting/dubbing, I live with my gf and we have the cutest calico cat! EDIT: Typos u_u
