Satisiun Desain. The first name isn't going to win any marks for being lore-friendly, I admit, as it doesn't meet the naming conventions for the most part of an Elezen. On the other hand, 'Desain' is rather perfect if you consider Elezen naming conventions having roots in French, since 'De' stands for 'The' and 'Sain' stands for 'Sane'. So in effect, Sati's name comes out as Satisiun The Sane. Always nice to know when someone is sane, right? In any event, Sati's parents being of the traveling merchant variety before and up to his birth, I may just pass it off as his folks being a bit eccentric (oh the irony of eccentrics with that last name) as well as being around so many places and races influencing for a more original first name.

Just giving a small bump to add some pertinent information related to this that I came upon. Looks like they'll potentially be adding some way to go about comparing heights during character creation as well during Phase 4, or they'll at least be addressing it in some manner. http://forum.square-enix.com/ARR-Test/threads/36485-FFXIV-A-Realm-Reborn-Player-Feedback-Status-List?p=643276&viewfull=1#post643276

Recurring Optional Bosses (and not-so-optional)
Satisiun replied to Mycroft's topic in FFXIV Discussion
A certain Empire has gunblades, if you look really close at their gear in the cutscenes... Belatedly, don't forget gunhalberds (link is split since it keeps auto-YouTube embedding). ... and weird gundagger things that are attached along the forearm. Honestly, at this point, if the Garleans don't have a gun attached to everything and anything I'll be disappointed. I even want to see a gunshield. :V Maybe some sort of shield that fires off point-blank buckshot shotgun rounds in your face if you strike it when an enemy defends with it. -
You do remember last time, don't you? And you still call THIS a huge deal? Oh, the memories~ http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=513 I still stand by my rant near the end of that thread that the majority of you were being tail-tucking buttmonkeys who simpered away from Lindblum due to overblown fears of anti-RP mobs running up and down the streets of Ul'dah looking for people to lynch if they so much as emoted. Not that it matters too much what I say since I didn't stick with 1.xx beyond a point, try as I might. At least this time you disabled vote-changing, Kylin. Ribbing aside (and really, I'm just joshing around), I am curious. Do you have a contingency plan if the Beta Server names don't carry to release, much less to Open Beta/Early Access? Another vote entirely? Some other idea?

Only thing I'mma share for now? They ruined -- and I mean ruined -- my serviceable and perfectly casual tarred walking hat during the 1.0 ==> 2.0 changeover process. Before: After: Just. Why, Dev. Team? Why? Why did you have to ruin such a perfect hat that I literally spent weeks, if not a couple months back in 1.0, trying to get my hands on? You're tearin' me apart, Yoshida.

Like I said in my +Rep to you, Eva, great work. It's obvious you put a lot of thought and consideration in to this, and once the NDA is lifted and images of comparison can be better pored over without issues of disclosure, it'll be fun to test the accuracy of this. I'm oddly surprised at one or two of the results, particularly how Elezen Female can be dwarfed by Highlander Hyur Males. That definitely throws me for a loop considering how the rest of the scale progressively slides down by race for the most part. Male Miqo'te height also surprises me, though I guess not too much if they had to keep them within a similar range as their female counterparts. If this holds up during Open Beta, looks like Sati will be getting a bit off the top to better accommodate to the high end of the scale. Do you intend to also put out more specific numbers to all five height options we've seen in Character Creation videos SE has put out, or just keep it to Low/Avg/High?

Seems I'm tardy to the party and everyone else has already got their greetings in. So it goes. Anyway, like everyone else has already said, welcome to the RPC. Make yourself at home, fire up a wiki profile for yourself and your character, maybe toss up something in the directory so we can get to know you some more, peruse some of the lore that's been collected in several of the forums here, and most of all have a good time, yeah? As others have said, when it comes to art definitely poke about the Artisan House, since I know several members here dabble in artwork and occasionally toss up commission slots. With so many good artists around here, you'll find someone to whittle something out for your Vee in no time.

The long and short of it - 'height' in FFXIV.
Satisiun replied to Satisiun's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
You just ... really love that word, don't you? I mean, I don't know what it is, but it's definitely grinding my gears. Like it's almost being used in a demeaning or a flippant way. Of course maybe I am just overreaching, or perhaps I'm a might bit sensitive? One way or the other ... Let me be CLEAR. The word is in no way used to demean you, it is simply my opinion. As an artist, and one who spent a lot of class time drawing nude models of various statures, I have a differing opinion on anatomy and proportions. I am not trying to start an argument, nor am I trying to call you any sort of name for having a different opinion than me. This topic in itself really has no use until we get an official reply from Devs, and until even them both of our sides are pure speculation. The picture I posted was one I found, those are actual in game models by the by (simply rendered out for PR), that gave me a decent comparison I could work with, purely to show the differences. Now, as stated in my actual post, this of course depends on the variation WITHIN the actual race. I personally think the models in the picture I showed you are all the medium height, basing on the fact Deirdre herself is a short Elezen and is nearly the same height as a tall male Hyur. I could be wrong, of course. That being said, if you are sensitive, please do not start topics people will have widely different opinions on and expect not to have anyone challenge your own view. As Aysun said, 'nuff said. Wait for the Devs. Whoa there, champ. Beyond my musing on the tone behind the repeated use of 'freakish', none of what I wrote or said had any inclination to be offensive or angry. I'm quite fine with challenged opinions as well, and I think I've rebutted them with a reasonable and rational manner of doing so with nary any sort of mean-spirited venom. If you disagree, well, I'm sorry to hear that? Offense was not my intent after all. Yes, the original thread was made in relation to the issue as it pertained to my character, and that was because that is what got the topic started in the first place. I see nothing wrong with that being the motive, and if this thread veered off in to further discussion of the topic at large, then all the better! Truly, I think you need to calm down a little with the attitude, though. No offense or anything, but the whole caps locking and exclamatory response definitely smacks of a very angry tone that is totally not needed, and I even admitted I could be overreaching or reading too much in to your choice of words. I wasn't trying to cover my butt or anything, I was sincerely showing some caution there. Besides, we all make mistakes, right? I'm sure there are people out there who have misproportioned things such as weight to their characters, for example, or the general structure of their figure as a whole. In any event, I'd be more inclined to believe that there is a middle ground here that needs to be considered, because while you consider 7'7" to be freakish and monstrous for even an Elezen, I conversely find 6'0" to be downright comically stunted in growth if that is what is deemed 'average' for them. I personally find Merri's range to be quite reasonable, as it both makes sense in regards to Elezen being outside the normal range of Hyur Midlanders in regards to height, but not being so tall that they break the scales compared to the other 'big' races. tl;dr - Beta can't come fast enough to resolve this. :cactuar: -

Of course maybe I am just overreaching, or perhaps I'm a might bit sensitive? One way or the other ... Anyway, just so we're clear, neither of us even knows what build or height setting the characters are in the official image art you posted, right? Because that's a very important thing to consider here. Is the Elezen a small? The Roegadyn? Is that a large Lalafel (try saying that ten times fast)? Are all characters represented as 'average'? We simply do not know. Consider, too, what I posted in the previous thread. You've seen what characters look like when placed side by side, and how they measure up in that regard. Now tell me, do in-game screenshots have more, or less, clout than the image that you've provided? Because to me, the actual screenshots weigh more importantly in this matter, and it's because this is what we see when we are playing. I'll humor you, though, and use the promotional artwork to show that either your height estimates are off, or the promotional work itself is pretty bunk. Let's assume that everyone in that picture is set to the average height of their specific race and gender. Do you know what the average size of a male human head is in terms of length? If you take a typical male who stands around, oh, 5'7" to 5'11", and consider that the proportion of the head on a normal human male is about 1/7th of the total height (thanks, Encyclopedia Britannica!), and measure from bottom of the chin to top of the head ... 67 / 7 = 9.5714..., so let's just round down to the tenth and say 9.5". So let's take Mr. Hyur's head, who stands at 67 inches (5'7") by your measurements, lop it off (this is one macabre experiment, huh?), multiply it and pile heads on top of one another (very macabre!), and see where we wind up on this scale. This is possible because, going off the promotional art, everyone is basically standing next to one another, with no differentiation in regards to one of them standing too much in front or back, thus screwing with perspective and, in turn, comparison to the head. We won't use anyone else's head as a gauge of measurement because (a) their races are fantastical and as such we can't effectively relate them to real-life, and (b) he is not tilting, twisting, or otherwise at an angle (hence using his versus the Hyur F), making for a perfect representation of 'per head'. Fortunately for us, Mr. Elezen is standing upright at full height as well, so there shouldn't be any concerns over slouching here. Anyway, going off of the comparison, the Elezen stands at 9 3/4 heads. 9.75 * 9.5 = 92.625 Converted to ft/in: ~7'8" Keep in mind this is a rough estimate, so you're free to go ahead and dock a few penalty inches if you find where I started measuring to be off (heel thickness adding to height, for example). That still puts the Elezen beyond what your measurements were by a country mile, however. But what about everyone else? How does the measuring head size them up? Well, let's look at Mr. Hyur himself. He comes out to about 8.8 heads, give or take a little. 8.8 * 9.5 = 83.6 Converted to ft/in: ~6'11" Interesting, huh? After seeing that, I knew something must be off. So I cropped the male Hyur and measured by pixels. Maybe his proportions were off somehow? Entire body (toes to head tip): ~645px Head (chin to head tip): ~72px 72 / 645 = .11162... Turned to percentage (rounded to the lowest tenth): 11.1% Let's compare to what Encyclopedia Britannica said, about a male human head being 1/7th of their height: 1 / 7 = .14265... Turned to percentage (rounded to the lowest tenth): 14.2% Looks like Mr. Hyur has one tiny cranium in comparison to the rest of his body, and 'normal' humans as a whole, and by a hard-to-ignore amount! That's a whole two inches! 7.4" vs. 9.5"! Now see, that actually gives you the measurements you were giving, but I think this brings up more questions than anything else about the validity of promotional work versus actual in-game comparisons. This leaves me to conclude a couple possibilities: -The promotional art is all sorts of all over the place, and is really a rather invalid thing to use in this argument because it laughs in the face of what we know about body proportions for every single person, including the people who are based off an actual race in real life (see: us). -The promotional art is in fact a valid gauge for measurements, which leaves us to conclude that everyone who is not a Lalafel is actually a giant, and as such everyone is 'freakish' and beastmen-like both in height and proportions. Either way, I'd sooner rely on actual in-game measurements over gussied up promotional work that leaves me with more questions than answers. All I know is that by using typical, reliable averages of measurement in real life and translating them to both Vana'diel and Eorzea, I don't feel that I am wrong here. In the end, of course, we'll just have to wait and see what happens when we get everyone side-by-side in-game and see how that pans out. Isn't debating fun? :cactuar: -
Well, until Eva is able to roll out those efforts to partake in the beta and start doing some actual, side-by-side comparisons for us, I figure it best to resume the topic of height here, so as not to derail Dee's thread even worse. And let me apologize for that, because even though I was just responding to her about her perspective on the matter, I didn't think it would turn in to a several post, half-page bonanza about the issue. Sorry, Dee. In any event, let me start off with Gestalt's post, since that is where this was all left off: I respect your opinion, Gestalt, and I also understand you are not trying to offend, but I do take some umbrage with your real-life example. You're trying to compare an Elezen who is of athletic stature due to years spent freelancing and adventuring to someone who is, well ... I mean, look at him. He is disproportionate. He is very much not properly balanced in regards to his build, as a result of being an extremely unique outlier in regards to height. He's also 8'9", a whole 14 inches taller than my own Elezen, making the comparison very ... well, I think the comparison is not fair, to be plain. That is why, when I was making my case and referring to real life people, I referred to Yao Ming. Just look at the guy: That is what an athletic person who is 7'6" looks like. He is proportionate. He is properly built. In essence, he is the best argument I can give in regards to someone about that height not being 'freakish'. Now factor in that Elezen are both a fantastical race, and that our characters are built to be adventurers, and you can see why I am a bit flummoxed at your counter-example. As for your example image in the game itself, well, the only thing I have to say to that is that this seems to be less an issue of what is considered 'freakishly' tall, and more an issue of "Why is there such an expansive chasm between small/normal, and then hueg in the game?". And I think that is something to consider here, too. Why is it that there is a real lack of 'middle' in regards to heights in the game? Maybe ARR will change that? Maybe not? All I know is that it seems to me that either Hyur Fs, as a good 'median', are comparable to their human counterparts and as such this means everyone else who is a male and of Elezen/Highlander/Roegadyn breed are gigantic, or that Eorzeans are by and large a foot shorter than us on Earth, which would be the only reasonable conclusion beyond the aforementioned males being towering titans with nary a middle ground. :? Either way, that's all I got. I sincerely hope the Beta comes soon, because I'd like to nip this in the butt right-quick.

... crap. I feel weird asking since, like, I only semi-recently came back in to the fold of this community, but ... guh ... the hell with it. I'll take that final slot, if possible. D:

On the whole tail matter, a little bird told me that there is the possibility of several physical appearance categories getting 'numeric' values that you change to get what you want, and this includes tail length. '0' is not possible, however length may very well have its variable ranges.

Welcome aboard. It's actually awesome to find someone else who also played Dragoon as their main, including right through the leaner times before Treasures of Aht Urhgan came along and made piercing damage a thing that was cherished and awesome against Colibri. I still play XI myself, and still main DRG as well. As to your question about racial behavior in FFXIV, something to take note of is that by comparison to FFXI, FFXIV hardly has much of any issues with race in Eorzea and society as a whole. Whereas in FFXI race was a rather important story piece in many ways, and was very much played up as a dramatic storytelling piece in both missions and in general (Elvaan superiority, Humes basically treating Galka like a mixture of Native Americans and slaves, Tarutaru considering Mithra feral yet useful), FFXIV almost never has any sort of mention of that sort of racial conflict, not even underneath the surface. Of course that isn't to say that your character can't have some issues with a specific type of race! Just keep in mind that, at least in 1.0, racial tensions were, at worst, someone making a crack about a Lalafel's height or an Elezen's long neck.

Meh. A shame that it's on Lakshmi. I'm just much too invested and leveled on FFXI Sati and involved in his current community on Carbuncle (formerly Gilgamesh pre-merging in 2010/2011) to go server hopping, much less making a new character from scratch. I wish you the best of luck, though!

I'm obviously not any good at giving specific advice or making specific requests on what should or should not be done with the new forum's appearance, but one thought might be to try and go with a theme more in line with how A Realm Reborn looks. The colors, the fonts, the cursor (not that I know what the game's cursor looks like from seeing it up close or anything or anything ... :cactuar: ). I know, a very general suggestion, but just my two cents. I think it would be fitting, and there are ways to work in FFXIV RP motifs at the same time.

Well, unlike Mr. Tadir, I lack the looks to go posting images of myself nowadays, but I'll still give a (re-)introduction of myself, because why the Hell not? My name is Mike. I'll spare the last name, but if you're curious, my name is basically the same as both a famous comic artist as well as a professional NFL player. I just turned 30 years old about half a month ago, and currently reside in the state of Ohio. You know, the same Ohio that you're stuck in forever once you move there? Anyway. At the moment I am currently unemployed, having bounced around jobs -- as well as states and even countries -- since early 2011. I spent about half a year teaching English over in Japan before returning back to the States, followed by about a 8-9 month sabbatical living with my folks in Arizona, taking some random classes to further progress my English teaching certification as well as my pre-existing Bachelor degree, which is in Sport Management. Tried looking for a job there, the economy blew, came back to Ohio (where I had been from 2005 to 2011 pre-Japan). Decided finally that I was really sick and tired of not finding anything with my chosen degree, and am now gearing up to go back to college to pursue a new career in Childhood Intervention Specialism, also known as Special Education, starting in January. I'm also contemplating enlisting in the military, but I need to shed a few pounds before that would be an available option, sadly. In any event, I'll just wrap up by saying I've been in to MMOs since I was in my teens, starting with Ultima Online, working my way over to EverQuest, before getting established in Final Fantasy XI ever since its release in North America. Save for little breaks where I tried EQ2, Aion, and WoW (god did I hate WoW), I've always gone back to it. And now here I am, waiting to see if A Realm Reborn turns out to be as good as currently advertised.

The 'Oh god help!' Wiki Coding/Editing Support Thread.
Satisiun replied to Satisiun's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Hey, thanks! I truly appreciate you putting that much effort in to helping me out! In almost all regards, this code works just fine with what you've done! It pushes the Sections down in Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer (natch IE; for some inane reason with this code, IE is the odd man out ... oi vey), all without the line-break abusing. So in that way there is no more problems with the character box overlapping anything. Something I did notice, and this seems to only happen in Firefox, is that if the browser is either too large or maximized, then as a result of the character box aligning itself on the right side (I think this is why it is happening at least), content will end up moving up and to the left side of the box, instead of staying underneath the box like it does in Chrome. Just to give a visual reference: http://i46.tinypic.com/293ksnr.png - Firefox http://i47.tinypic.com/15pn85x.png - Chrome So I'm a bit flummoxed with that, but compared to what was going on before, it's a very big improvement. Thanks! And I appreciate the compliment! I can't take a lot of credit since, like I said, I basically borrowed and picked apart other's profiles, but yeah! -

It didn't seem like just marking a page with the 'help me!' stub would readily get a lot of assistance, so I hope everyone is alright with me making a thread solely for those who need support in making their character pages over on the Wiki? I don't know how many people here are Wiki-knowledgable, but I figure that there has to be some out there who have a good grasp on what they are doing, right? I hope? In any event, I'd be lying if I said I made this solely for others and not myself. I actually am having an issue of my own that, suffice it to say, is driving me up the wall.http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/wiki/index ... iun_DesainSo I'll admit right off the bat I know very little about true coding. I've been sort of Mega Manning it the whole time (which is to say borrowing from others and piecing together what looks good -- special thanks to Kylin, Endemerrin, and Sienna, who I shamelessly admit to borrowing from!), and while at first I thought things were looking good, I've been informed by my non-Firefox and non-IE using friends that in Chrome, there is a hueg, white gap between the character info box, and the still-unfinished sections beneath it.I tried fixing this by wiping all the line-breaks (aka ) I added to push the sections down (they were being hidden behind the character box in IE and FF prior), but then as a result, while it no longer has the massive gap in Chrome, the sections start to get buried behind the character box again.I don't know what to think of it, or what to do. It seems like maybe it has to do with the fact that in FF and IE, the character box aligns itself to the right, whereas in Chrome it aligns left (if you maximize your browser if you don't already you'll see what I mean).So. Yeah. I'm clueless, and I need help. :? Anyone out there capable of offering some?
-
Thank you! Yes, I'm plodding through the Wikia right now, and still trying to feel out the coding process before I do anything. Trying to think of what I could do to make the profile stand out, and also see what others have done to spruce their own pages up. Definitely a lot more complicated than just using good ol' BBCode on a forum post to make a profile.

Speaking of the 5-year time skip, here's a thought. Depending on how the time skip is explained -- be it some sort of dimensional limbo stasis, or just a total and complete 'blip!' from the end of 1.0 to the start of 2.0 -- has anyone considered aging their character five years physically as well? Just sort of popped up in my head as an interesting thought, mainly if it turns out that those who were teleported in to the future spent time in stasis. Sorry if I am getting off-topic! :moogle:
-
Sort of makes you happy that Final Fantasy XIV didn't have a running in-game calendar like Final Fantasy XI did. If you were to attempt and go for full-blown immersion based off the actual world calendar, you'd basically be playing a hundreds-year old character whose life seems to fly by at one hour per day, give or take a few real-life minutes. :? In any event, it may very well ultimately depend on the amount of roleplay that you do. If you're a very heavy player who has scenarios and scenes coming out the whazoo after about two years of playing, treating those two years like, well ... two years, may be the best option, because trying to figure out how to condense so much activity in to just a year could be troubling. On the other hand, a lighter roleplayer who isn't at it so much may go with the option that dictates that everything which has happened with them happened inside of just the 1< years that 1.0 took place in. But that's only going off the possibility that Options A and B are the only two options available. The crux of the issue, in the end, seems to fall on what you said at the end involving 'others'. The way time works in an MMO, beyond the fact that night and day whiz by from a game mechanics standpoint at a staggering pace, just varies too much between players to really work well unless you are working on a specific storyline with someone where you are figuring out things like time passed, time spent together, et cetera. It's not something that can be dictated or forced upon others, really, without risking the possibility of discontentment and disagreement, especially if there hasn't been some sort of hammering out of details prior. Seems like the safest bet is to simply handle time in a very general, almost vague manner, where specific dates or elapsed periods of time are left out of casual, non-storyline'd roleplaying.
