Reasoning for irregular race/nationality combinations

Actually, I think a better way to phrase the complaint against 'normal' is not the world 'normal' at all. It's 'common' or 'average'. It applies to real-life things as well. The majority isn't 'normal', persay, it's just 'common', the literal majority. To that end, think of writing a roleplay character (or any character, really) as a matter of addition. The more unusual factors (or really, any factors in general), the higher that end number turns out. And sometimes roleplayers can have a knee-jerk reaction to a character with a particularly large mental number because it's often used as a shortcut to be interesting. Let's go through that infamous example, the Miqo'te-Ishgardian dragoon. Let's make them a male Seeker too, just to ramp it up a little. So we have Miqo'te + male + Seeker + Ishgardian + lancer + dragoon (yes, lancer and dragoon are two entries). Breaking it down, Miqo'te have very particular tribal lore that makes them a little less common to see around, particularly male Seekers and female Keepers. So first, you have to explain why that male Seeker is no longer in his tribe - or was never part of one to begin with even with the Miqo'te social structures. There's already a lot of factors to bear in mind. To continue on, now you have the issues between Ishgardians and others and estimating how common your particular race would be (using NPCs as a general statistic). Lancer isn't a particularly unique factor, it's just a matter of training, who would train them, ect, how many years they've put into it. Then we have to add on dragoon, because it's a very particular, iconic and significant practice with ample lore behind it. The odds of getting training in that study, again how many years they've put into it, how skilled they are... let's not even think about any other additions they might have, like particularly traumatic backstories, how old they are, so on and so forth. That's a lot of factors to be woven together into a coherent, believable whole. That's not to say what I just said is impossible or should be frowned upon, just the opposite. Many people see it as a 'you could, but why would you?' sort of question and it's up to the roleplayer to give an adequate and interesting answer to it. If you're just racking up that number without much thought, planning or interest in the lore behind it, at the end it might seem like a careless attempt at making yourself unique and special without actually being interesting. Others can often resent this attitude (or the appearance of it) and that's why you see people protesting 'but keep the lore in mind!' or 'but that's not common at all!' because of half-baked characters that reel off a ridiculously complex backstory or design and are all the more uninteresting for it. Sometimes they expect to be the center of attention or simply just want to be extra special while having a cardboard personality. The bottom line is, many - if not most - ideas can be done, and done well. It's up to you to justify your character design in a fashion that's engaging and interesting - both for you and those you interact with, ideally while keeping the tone and lore of the world for immersion purposes. Roleplaying is a community effort, after all. oh god that looked like less blather when I wrote it Edit edit: because the first edit ate my post. grr. This is a well put argument however i've found not many people actually research the lore before diving into the game. Not all of the lore is accessible in any one place and the stuff that is isn't readily updated as it is needed to be. Most people will play the race they want to play instead of researching what is more the norm. I'm all for updating the RPC wikipedia with information but gathering it in the firstplace is difficult. -

Doma is not an island nation and we do not know how large it is. All that was said is that it was a a coastal nation on the continent of Othard. Naoki Yoshida has confirmed that Doma's culture and settlement are based off of Japan According to wiki and such. I just thought that meant it was an island state. I was sure I read somewhere it was island-like. Edit: Cant find a post that states it is or isnt part of a continent or if it is part of an island group like Limsa but to the east. -

Unrelated to turning into sparkly pretty things. based on how often we (the hero) and other people fight in this nation. Death is relatively common. Like, so common dev's have confirmed that most people don't live past thirty.

Well, we know that Doma is a SMALL island nation. Probably around the size of my own country. We know they exported exotic fruits and were conquered by the empire. Also the fact their nation is based lore-wise (confirmed by naoki P) on japan makes it very irregular for me to believe that the doman people would accept any others outside the two majority race apart from force. Because it took forever until Japan accepted anything from anyone. -

If so, it would only prove that -garlemald- has Miqo'te. In my head cannon, I expect they aren't common at all in Doma or outside this mainland. Remember, Doman's aren't even used to Chocobo's (stupid horsebirds). If anyone can grab a screenie of those, i'd love to see - I was certain that in the Shinobi quests the other people accompanying him are usually thaumaturges and other fighters - not all Shinobi as the big bad guy Kurasu? Karasu? Crow (in japanese) is the main bad focus of evil ninjaness.. -

We know that Doma had been vassaled to garlemald for around ten years (if not longer) before the revolt and razing. However - the miqo'te seen in storyline - I don't recall them themselves being Ninja or even using weapons similarly. For the empire - if I were in theri shoes it would be easier to source troops to supply the specialist troops in the story - from the castum in shroud. Which, everyone knows, is in Eorzea. I would however call it a stretch if your point is to say that other city states developed 'class' technology exactly mirroring another. Most of the garleans I recall from the story (its been a while. Forgive me) are notably from this list: Imperial Bestiarius (Lancer) Imperial Centurion (No Class/Gunblade) Imperial Funditor (Archer) Imperial Hastatus (Lancer) Imperial Imaginifer (Thaumaturge) Imperial Hoplomachus (Gladiator) Imperial Myrmillo (Marauder) Imperial Pilus Prior (No Class/Gunblade; event invasion boss) Imperial Primus Ordinarius (No Class/Gunblade) Imperial Juggernaut Imperial Retiarius (Lancer) Imperial Sagittarius (Archer) Imperial Secutor (Pugilist) Imperial Signifer (Thaumaturge) Imperial Speculator (Conjurer) Imperial Triarius (Gladiator) Imperial Veles (Pugilist) Imperial War Hound Magitek Vanguard >< I don't think i've seen a 'Imperial blurhblurhclasshereblurh' yet. -

But, with how much of Eorzea these people did invade. isn't is -more- likely that they were Eorzean, turned garlean then turned dead? ._. we know that Garleans brainwash their captives into following them. -

Supra-late reply but I've been at work all day. Presumably the one miqo and one lala you refer to is from the instanced version of Castrum Centri? That's good that you're aware of that one, but have you paid attention to the assortment of Garlean enemies that come up in duties post-2.4? And in the NIN questline in particular. I saw more miqo Garleans in those instances than I did of the other races. I would find it more pleasurable that the miqo'te we find in the garlean questline after NIN is more likely to be a member that was taken and brainwashed from the castrum (thats still untouched) in the shroud. based on her fur she is probably a keeper. And keepers are known for hailing predominately from the twelveswood. and aye, I was referencing the lalafell from Castrum who had a fellow officer crush on her when you do the quest. Apart from that i've only seen an overwhelming majority of garleans be Hyurian and Elezen in race. -

Hm. This is gonna get reeeaaal awkward as I show my lack of world culture. Real-world France has a reputation for being similarly xenophobic. Preliminary glances at wikipedia of all places gives us this link detailing an "award" given out to prominent French folks who embrace - gasp! - the English language. It's similar to the Razzie Awards, only instead of being fun at the sake of bad movies, it's mocking someone for not being French enough. Similarly, this link discusses how internally, France is also phobic against itself; speaking a dialect or language other than French in school is grounds for punishment. It's not too far-fetched to think that Ishgard would be as accepting to "lesser races" as the French are to fat, cheeseburger eating Americans butchering their language. And then letting that guy join their special forces. All of that. Yes. That. -

Can confirm, does happen. And it wasn't even to my miqo fake!DRG. So someone can't have a miqo'te, a race which originally immigrated from across the seas in the first place, have lived in Doma, only to be conscripted by the Garlean Empire due to the area's subjugation? We have 0 confirmation that there are even Miqo'te in other countries but this one. We only know for sure that the races in Doma are most likely limited to: garlean Citizens (being predominately Hyur and Elezen of conquered countries and areas. one miqo'te and one lalafell. There was also ONE Roe mentioned who adopted a garlean naming convention. But other than that. Hyur.) and Au ra and Domans (hyurs). I'm not saying you cant be whatever you want, I'm just saying the integrity of the lore is at stake when you move too far away from what we have confirmation of. We literally don't -know- if other countries have Miqo'te. But we know their ancestors (thousands and thousands and thousands of years ago) crossed the frozen sea to this continent and settled here. Fifth Umbral Era - Element: Ice Less than 4000 (YA) more than 3000(YA) --- Ancestors of the Miqo'te tribes travel across the frozen seas following food. The ones that remained probably couldn't feed themselves hence the migrations in the first place. When we get confirmation, sure - thats cool. But we don't have it yet. -

I don't see how being a minority IRL plays into this - I mean, this is not a realistic setting. Its a setting with dragons and thousands of years of racial tensions and legitimate reasons for exclusion. I understand there are issues with people who begin to play the game without any knowledge, my questioning is why don't those players or peoples go about correcting their lore or characters to fit the setting. Especially those who have been playing for a while now. Sure you aren't harming anyone - but why disregard the work the lore devs and such have put into the game by working in to be a special snowflake?
