1. I'm not super wiki-fluent or anything. But...on the main RPC wiki page there is an option to browse character wikis by race. There is no option for Au Ra though. I would add it if I knew how but is it possible for anyone who knows how to adjust the wiki/has permissions to adjust the front page on the wiki to add an Au Ra listing for folks who now have Au Ra characters and want to add them?
2. I'm sorry you've had negative experiences concerning this. However, I've only felt that I've had positive experiences with this. The roe-only linkshell, for example, I've always found to be pretty positive. I also enjoy frequenting the Girl Gamers sub-reddit on reddit.com and it is my favorite gaming-related subreddit to date. However, a very easy solution is to not exclude LGBT allies. Girl Gamers has male subscribers as well. I understand your viewpoint but at the same time such communities are often formed to share experiences. It's the exact same reason why we have to organize to form a RP community--otherwise we'd never be able to find each other and share in our interests.
3. Oh no! It's okay! Don't feel intimidated by our discussion. Think of it more as a topic that is examining how frequent certain story ideas and elements pop up. Don't view them as things that are bad to RP. You are completely fine and Ember has a lot of miqo'te friends that don't have a name within the traditional scheme. It works just fine and in general there are a lot of characters with names that don't follow the naming contentions. There is no hidden law that demands RPers to choose those kind of names. You can roleplay your character not leaving home or not leaving their tribe. If Ember had never joined her current guild, she may have not left home for a long while. Home being, an abandoned small building that she used for a house. And whenever I roleplayed her, she came down from the eastern Thanalan to trade or do jobs. She even currently has a new home where she lives with the rest of her guild. I think you can do the same for tribes as well. You can roleplay them venturing out to accomplish some task for their tribe or on behalf of the tribe without them technically leaving it. Perhaps that may be rare or wise but it is still an option. You can even roleplay out that your tribe has been traveling alongside you and that it has stopped to put up camp just outside the city.
4. This entire post is really great for anyone considering a new character. I wanted to quote this post to basically say I agree with everything written here. I even bolded a few sentences that I find to be especially important. I don't know if I could even do this post justice by paraphrasing it in my own written voice. Though I think it would be helpful to note some of what Faye said in her posts. I, for the most part agree with her posts as well. Your character's personality and how they interact with other characters will be the most important feature about your character. Your back story will help dictate what kind of personality they could of developed and as well as open up future storylines. But back story won't always come into play with every RP scene like personality does. So, regardless of your back story, having a strong personality can help your character out. I know for me personally, I do appreciate uniqueness and the ability to stand out. It does bug me when RPers or other players say that this isn't something that should be a factor. For some people it is. And I know that not only do I look for uniqueness in my own characters but I look for them in other people's characters as well. Now, I think 'uniqueness' is less dictated by how 'uncommon' your back story is and more about how your character is portrayed. And on the topic of uniqueness, I'm going to have to disagree with some of you. I have met plenty of miqo'te who are completely unique characters from the rest of the miqo'te playerbase. I know a lot of strongly written characters of this race. They are pretty much proof that it doesn't matter how highly populated your character's race is-- you still can write something unique.
5. As a possible suggestion, why not have a miqo'te raised by a non-hyur as the topic seems to be shifting towards now? It isn't just 'player lore' that city miqo'te are a thing. They are common in actual lore too. There isn't much to separate a city miqo'te and one raised by hyur, but there ARE notable differences with the other races. I haven't run into very many adopted miqo'te, not as much as this thread implies. Though I imagine a lot of people RP it because it is one of the most common back stories available in fantasy RP. ( Though it is also one of my faces <3 ) From the POV of someone in the audience, I personally would be MUCH more interested in learning about a miqo'te adopted by a sea wolf than I would a miqo'te adopted by a midlander.
6. You know, I've seen this stated in the forums here a few times while looking around and I'm a little confused about it. Is there anything in-game that supports the idea of a large number of illiterate people? Because... so far... all I've seen are examples of people being pretty literate in general. Books, logs, journals, letters, etc... all being passed around in quests.... Signs and posters on the walls... Wearable "reading glasses".... Books decorating buildings... etc... There's also a statement in the Hyur character creation about how Midlanders are taught to read very young or "trained in letters from infancy" if you will. The only thing I've seen to support illiteracy in game was a one-off statement from a game dev without much elaboration (or racial/regional/cultural specifics). Curious if anyone here could point to more examples from in-game text/lore to support this at all? I'd LOVE to know though, because I'm thinking of having my character be pretty literate... or perhaps a "book nerd" if you will. It would be nice to know how odd/rare that kind of thing actually is amongst people (or Lalafell specifically) so I can RP appropriately. This is something I don't get, either. We have that statement from the Dev saying that literacy is rare... yet we have so many quests where we're passing notes around for people. Or putting up notices/posters. And then there's the actual Moogle Delivery Quests. And the 'newspaper' NPC's that pop up for some events. There's only one NPC (quest out in the Gold Bazaar) that I've ever encountered that, when trying to give them a flyer for work, actually said "I can't read". Everyone else, you give them a piece of paper and they read it. I have to say for things like this, I don't go by what the dev tells me. I go by one very important phrase in fiction: "Show, don't tell." Now I know fernhalwes is a pretty swell and cool dude. He's given us tons of infos and lore. If the author is totally insistent about their character or an element being a certain way, say for example, someone like George Lucas, and this conflicts from what we see in the story. What am I going to believe in as the audience? What is being shown to me of course! (Not a perfect example, I know, but it's 4 am T_T)
7. Please help me cure my indecision! Xaela lore's converted me but I'm gonna try my hand at a male character this time. @_@ Who should I piiick?
8. I also prefer Balmung because that is where I RP. However, RPC in general is tipped more towards Balmung. Here's a great website to check out Gilgamesh if you wish: http://www.gilgamesh-rp.com/
9. Himaa For reasons unknown, one out of every three pregnancies amongst the Himaa result in twins. As a result, over half the tribe's members have a doppelganger. This can prove an advantage during attacks, as it confuses the enemy into believing the dead have risen. So, someone on tumblr was thinking of rolling this tribe if they could find someone else to play a twin with them. I am going to paraphrase what I said on tumblr here which is basically that I believe this tribe would still be interesting to play even without a twin. There is a chance for inner drama here, presumably. Much of the tribe's identity and combat strategies lie in its natural born twins. Even though only one out of three births result in twins, the fact that two children are produced a time result in roughly 67% (math check?) of the tribe's population to be twins. Imagine then that if a large chunk of the tribe is a twin, a lot of the tribe's identity comes from its population of twins, and their fighting strategy rest as well with twins.... What does that mean for any tribe of men or women who are not twins? Perhaps they have an inferiority complex. They don't have a twin, therefore they are not as valued in combat. The culture of the tribe probably draws upon twins as well, resulting in the twin-less having an existential crisis.
10. Will you be listing what characters belong to which tribe in this thread? If not, I think it would be very helpful to create a master list of both pre-made and player made tribes and which characters belong to them.
11. It's just... an odd number, I suppose? It's not a rounded number or anything, or obviously linked to something like the Seekers and the alphabet. So, maybe there's some hidden meaning to it? I mean, there have been plenty of numbers that correlate to legends or have other powerful symbolism attached to them. 108, 666, 13, 7, to name a few. So, while it could really not mean anything other than that being the number they ended up with... the talk about the number just got me curious if there was any mythological significance to it. And what I quoted was what I managed to find in a cursory search - discounting some blog about angel numbers and the significance of both five and one that, while fitting, seemed a bit... sketchy? I dunno. Then again, I could totally say the 51 corresponds to Area 51 and we're totally going to find out that the Dawn Father and/or Dusk Mother are aliens. I think SE just wanted to give a lot of examples for tribe names since Xaela's last names are based off of it. Their number provides a lot of examples without making it too stressful for their translators or writers. There being an exact 50 clans would be a suspension of disbelief for me, since rarely are numbers exactly even. Humans just like numbers that end in 0 and 5. I think there is even a little bit of psychology behind it somewhere. I don't think there's any significance behind the number of clans, IMO. It's just the amount they wanted to give us to allow for player examples/diversity.
12. I disagree. There are 51 "existing clans". That is pretty concrete lore, IMO. Wanna chime in that I'm impressed by the detail of the Xaela lore but also extremely disappointed that most of it is pretty much just backstory fodder. There are more than 51 clans. Taken straight from the Au Ra name convention page.
13. :? I'm not sure what about: 1. A hidden/lesser known clan 2. A recently formed clan 3. Destroyed clan isn't a good justification for player-made clans? Or what is wrong with the number 51? It could be any number, they're just showing examples. On that note: 'The last of my tribe' is one of the most popular backstories in fantasy, up there with 'my parents were both killed by the empire.' I'm hoping Xaela RPers will use the existing tribes so I can see their headcanons but fully expect for a large number of Xaelas with dead clans.
14. Torgud This one. I know this is the lol!nudity one but it makes the most sense for Ember. For those who are not familiar with Ember, she is a Hellsguard roegadyn with no family who was discovered roaming the deserts at a very young age. She was completely wild and feral, never having encountered other people or civilization. Incredibly, she managed to survive her childhood on her own. I'd always said that Ember probably just wears long clothes but then I never realized or knew that various muds, paints, or earths could be used as a skin protectant. That is probably even more canonically accurate for her to take part in. So, I have considered doing a slight retcon in her backstory to add that in. TL;DR though? Ember already practices Torgud's tribe traditions. Grew up in the desert? Check. Will use some type of mud to protect herself from the sun? Check. Questionable bits of modesty that she doesn't use to be tantalizing because she's asexual? Check.
15. I'm not impressed by the Raen naming conventions. But I am incredibly impressed by the Xaela ones. I would even argue that at this point that out of all the race/clan combinations in game, Xaela now have the most lore out of any of them by far, due to the tribal last name lore tidbits. I have been one of the RPC members who has been a bit outspoken about her dislike of the female Au Ri. On one hand, the sheer awesomeness of the Xaela's lore makes it sting a bit more that they took the extreme sexual dimorphism route (to my great disdain), and on the other hand, the awesomeness of the lore alone makes me want to disregard my dislike of their visuals and make one anyway. (Or maybe I'll finally make my first male character? Hmm, hmm.) But no, seriously, the individual tribe lore tidbits are just my cup of tea. There are so many different tribes and most of them are very cool and interesting. Nnnngh, Xaela.
16. Well, armor glamours I see as mostly meta, just like fantasia. However there are cases of 'glamours' in lore, particularly some of the more mischievous NPC races showcase it. I don't recall these ever being called 'glamours' and therefore I prefer to see such magics as 'shape shifting' as opposed to 'illusions'. Illusions don't seem go make much sense go me and I personally wouldn't find it fun, unless both magics existed and illusions were simply easier to cast. I don't see anything wrong with its usage in RP or its usage to explain Au Ra. If you don't want to completely scrap your previous character in a game where alt leveling is extremely frustrating, then you'll need to find an IC reason for why and how your character has been hiding their Au Ra-ness. But in the end there will still be complaints of it being overdone or too common. But I ask, so what? Glamours should probably be rare to be believable. Know what else is supposed to be rare? Male miqo'te.
17. I'm not a fan of any of these options but that's just me. Don't seem my style. They seem heavily on the comedic side. While I do like comedic RP, I like to keep backgrounds kind of on the serious side, myself.
18. Oh my god. It's not class restricted. NNNNNGH. Okay, Ember. Deep breathing.
19. I'm really on the edge of my seat to see how much they are being changed. I hope it's only a slight tweak. I get nervous about animation/character model changes...
20. FFVI has a GBA version with a better translation. It's worth checking out for anyone who hasn't. The difference in story translation is pretty large and changes the story and characters a bit. The only thing keeping the GBA port from being the definitive version of FF6 is the terrible sound quality. But I believe there's a patch floating around that fixes that if you're using an emulator to play it.. My SO is a huge FF fan. He has a weird relationship with FFVI because he was told that FFVI was the best in the series but when he played it, he hated it. Over time he's come to like it, but thinks it's over hyped and that the original translation is a nightmare. But he also loves the music of FFs and laments the GBA version having such terrible music. Last time he played a modded rom that had a fan translation, he liked it alright but still preferred the GBA translation. I am sure he would LOVE a way to fix the GBA rom's terrible music.
21. I have mixed feelings on this. I'm not a big Final Fantasy fan. I mostly just like Final Fantasy IX and like the others okay. I've come around to Final Fantasy X with time. I'm not sure if I still like Final Fantasy VII or not. I haven't played it as an adult to be honest. It's a good game but not one I'm sure that I need to relive. There are other RPGs that are more near and dear to my heart. Definitely interested in checking this out but I wouldn't call myself a fan. Most of my hesitations exist in modern day Square Enix. I haven't been a fan of their closed world, corridor design (that existed well before FFXIII in a lil' game called FFX) , their continued attempts from killing off the strategic ATB battle system for more action oriented directions, and strangely enough their game's graphics. To touch more on graphics, Square Enix likes to focus on realistic graphics but their characters are still very distinctly anime. Realism and anime don't really mesh well in my opinion. It's too much uncanny valley for me and I certainly see it in Advent Children. There's something weird about modern FFs' anime characteristics too that are just such a turn off to me. I can't put my finger on it. In contrast, games like that Tales series which are done entirely in anime style are not offputting at all to me. I figure that it must not only be modern FF graphics but their animations and character personalities as well. Long story short, I don't think the remake will be for me. But I am happy that Final Fantasy VII is getting one, as fans have been clamoring for it for quite a long time. And while I am not exactly a fan of modern day Final Fantasy graphics, the original Final Fantasy VII ones are rather strange and don't age well. (in contrast, Chrono Trigger with its bright colorful sprites aged fantastic) I'll be keeping an eye out on it to see if it will be something that I can get into.
22. FFVI has a GBA version with a better translation. It's worth checking out for anyone who hasn't. The difference in story translation is pretty large and changes the story and characters a bit.
23. Open world RP ettiquette pretty much boils down to this: Are you in the open and accepting walk ups? Use /say Are you in the open and not accepting walk ups? Use /party or /tell Actually if you are RPing anywhere but the RP is private do not RP in /say. If people can't join in, /say serves no function that /party can't other than advertising your rp but then saying "lol can't touch this."
24. Ember is also blind and has been hoping to meet other people like her for a while. I would definitely be interested in meeting. She is a playful and affectionate roegadyn with a fairly simplistic manner of speaking.
