1. I think so too. There was an interview with Yoshi-P where he says that RDM will be in Ul'dah, but he also says that those looking for SAM would be fine logging out in Ul'dah as well. I hoped that this meant that SAM would be at Vesper Bay or the ease was contributed to teleporting to wherever we wanted... I never thought we'd have both jobs in the same City State. At least they're not in the same sections.
2. This is wonderful news for Mateus! Very pleased to see it on the list. =) I do really hope that those unhappy with the state of Balmung find a great new home on Mateus and that they end up being a good addition to the budding RP community there. I may even have to make a new character there and check things out. Variety is good.
3. Have you seen Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice? It's being developed by Ninja Theory and is built around Scandinavian myth and legend (with some schizophrenia thrown in). I think its about Celtic myth and legend, but it does look pretty cool.
4. SotC Remake looks amazing. I'll probably buy it. Bethesda was a let down. I don't mind the paid mods really as long as they're really good quality and guaranteed to be compatible with other paid for mods. I'm mostly sad that there was no TES VI news. I loved FF15, but that fishing VR game looks like a total and complete bust. Who would buy that? Beyond Good and Evil 2s trailer looks nice, but I have no idea how its going to be as a game. I am interested in what they mean by seamless online world though. God Of War looks great. I'm not much of a blood and gore type of girl, but the story looks cool and I'm Scandinavian, so...
5. I've always assumed that worship of Thaliak revolved around the pursuit of knowledge, though I've never seen any canon mention on what that entails (ceremony and whatnot). While I wouldn't say that Miah worships Thaliak, her main drive in life is to gain knowledge on as much things as she can by experiencing them first hand, no matter how minute and insignificant the experience may be - something that she believes Thaliak would approve of. This is her own way of being devout while not belonging to a church like many who worship Halone would be. Thaliak is the patron of Sharlayan though, and its pretty safe to assume that much of their society (and likely that of The Circle of Knowing / Scions) is the way it is because of their reverence to him. "Knowledge Seeks No Man" is a line thats written on a slab of stone in Idyllshire, located in the Dravanian Hinterlands where the Sharlayan (the city state) was located before they evacuated. I hope that this helps.
6. Like others here, I would only move off of Balmung if houses/furnishings moved as well. Housing is such a huge investment that simply tossing it in the trash is out of the question. It takes so much gil and a huge amount of luck to get one. This extends to apartments as well. Then theres also the problem with how big of a gamble that moving will be. I'm sure that many would move, but I'm also sure that many will not. If you move, will you be able to find a group you mesh well with? You better be sure that you do because there likely won't be any going back to Balmung if you don't like the new server.
7. I feel kinda guilty for adding onto this list... it seems you have your hands full with so many people responding to this thread. I would really love to have some artwork of Miah though so here I am. Please forgive me! If you happen to decide to draw Miah and you want a better picture, just me know and I'll try my best! Thanks so much for offering this to the community. Your work is really good. =)
8. I'm one of those players who are IC all the time... by this I mean... well, I may not always consider where Miah goes IC until / if / when RP happens. I could be running around Ul'dah just going to the MB or picking up a quest or something and if someone stops me and initiates RP or I overhear something I might want to get in on, I will find a reason as to why Miah is there. I am always up for RP no matter where I am. I usually have trouble finding RP outside of my FC and my friends list. I know that the major RP hub on Balmung is The Quicksand, but its usually really crowded (which makes it hard for me to follow everything and my typing lag) and I'm not personally interested with the lewdness that's there (not that there is anything wrong with lewd stuff, imo). The other city-states need more RP love. It makes me kinda sad to know that there are other great places out there that don't get as much traffic for whatever reason. Every city-state has beautiful locations in and around them that would make great places to congregate at... but they're just not used frequently (or at all). Its a catch-22. Maybe eventually I'll look into joining a RP LS that isn't connected with my FC. I know that it'll open up a lot of RP opportunities for me. I'm already juggling a few LSs for other things though. ><
9. Miah and Tahla. :3 I have a few screenshots from their bonding ceremony but they're not very good. >_>
10. Balmung is home to the largest RP community in FF14 and we seem to have a lot going on all the time. However, I admit that I don't really know much about the other Worlds that have a RP scene - I started on Balmung at ARRs launch and I haven't played more than a few hours on any other World. Hopefully you'll find good people to RP with no matter where you eventually end up. FF14 is pretty great for RP and the community (RP or not) is generally outstanding compared to other MMORPGs out there, so I'm sure that you will. Have fun and best of luck!
11. 7/28/2016 Our applications are open! If you like what you've seen and read about us, and think that we'll make a good fit you, please apply! And as always, we're pretty much always open for RPing with other FCs, LSs, or other RPers in the community. =) Have fun in Eorzea!
12. To me, soul stones are a shortcut to mastery and are not required (in most cases). Like... there is the normal, real-life way of learning and then there's the soul stone way where you learn at a much quicker rate (maybe like having a grand-master tutoring you every waking hour of the day?). Those are my thoughts on it anyway. I've considered having the MCH soul stone ICly because of its nature - its a new job and the stone itself isn't inscribed yet (according to the items text), but even though I main MCH, I haven't really put much attention on it in RP so I might just ignore it for now. Before HW, I mained BRD, but Miah was just an archer as far as RP went. I don't play BLM at all... so I don't have to deal with that mess.
13. "Better" is a fairly loaded worded. I'd say average characters are much safer/easier characters to play, for a variety of reasons, and that ease of play results in less skilled or experienced writers getting much better results instead of fumbling around with a more complex and extravagant character that would require more finesse to play to appropriate effect. The use of "better" rubs me the wrong way as well. I have characters that are products of unlikely pasts and characters that are just a Brume thief or Lominsian trade ship proprietor. Is the Garlean defector somehow less valuable than the history professor on her first teaching assignment? Or somehow offensive for having an unusual past? I don't believe so. I also don't believe either one is more of a challenge to write than the other. They present different challenges. The more generic characters require a lot of extra work to make them feel like an actual part of the world instead of something that could be cut and pasted into any environment, and the more uncommon characters require a lot of delving into lore and a huge dose of humility to not overplay them into some shounen fever-dream of power and uniqueness. "Better" is way, way too value based a word to use here, I think. And I'm sure it slights a lot of talented writers who've developed interesting characters that happen to have bombastic backstories. As I said, its a personal preference. For the most part, people who I've RPed with who rely on things that happen to them to sell their character rather than rely on their character to sell their character aren't as enjoyable for me to RP with as someone who does - therefore better for me. In reply to your example... a Garlean defector is 100% fine in my book and totally lore-friendly. I am sure that there are Garleans that aren't loyal to the empire and would defect - there are examples of this in the MSQ. I have no problem with that at all. What I'm referring to when I say outlandish are things like... characters who jump around back and forth from other dimensions, characters who are from some station of high influence and power and impose that on others (things like characters who are in the Heaven's Ward or play as some deity in disguise) and other things like that. Even then, a lot of this would be fine as long as it wasn't the main draw of their character - snowflakes. Please don't assume that I use the word better to slight others, give me the benefit of the doubt here. If I have slighted anyone, I'm sorry. I don't know if my word use hurt anyones feelings, but know that it wasn't my intention to do so. Everyone has things that they like more than others. I like plain cheese pizza better than pepperoni pizza. Does that mean that I dislike pepperoni pizza or that I think less of people who like that topping more than plain cheese? No. If I could only have one slice of pizza and my only options were cheese or pepperoni, would I take the cheese? Yes. People have different tastes and that is fine.
14. Personally, in most cases, I don't consider quickchanging armor to be an IC thing. When I need to change my gear/clothes/equipment for whatever reason during RP, I just excuse myself offscreen and change there (as if I went to a room and changed).
15. 7/16/2016 We are not accepting new applicants at this time. If you would like to get in contact with us for any reason (networking, collaborative events, etc), feel free to contact me (Miah Gamduhla) in-game or through this website and I will do my best to reply and do what I can. If I'm not around here or in-game, go ahead and poke one of us who are online and they should be able to direct you to another member of leadership. Have fun in Eorzea!
16. History hidden... Society shrouded in secrets... Ancient artifacts adrift... Will they fall into the hands of defenders, or devils? Long have the Bibliothecs of Sharlayan hoarded knowledge and powerful artifacts in equal measure; seeking both to consolidate their position within the isolationist society and to keep them from the clutches of those who might abuse them - or perhaps so they might do so, themselves. Whatever their intentions, it was only inevitable that some men and women would eventually visit the ruins of the city-state of scholars in search of items left behind during their exodus. And when they did, there would be those ready to reclaim them. They are called many things - adventurers, treasure hunters, thrill-seekers, pirates... thieves - but they come together in singular purpose for the greater good: to keep the power of Sharlayan out of the hands of those who would use it against Eorzea. Arcadeus is a meduim-heavy roleplay-oriented FC located in Mist (Ward 7, Plot 5) that strives to offer a compelling narrative for players to both take part in and to develop their characters further within; while maintaining a comfortable, casual atmosphere for all other aspects of the game. We want to be more than just a collection of benefits - we want to be a home; a family where every member brings something to create a cohesive whole that adds to our experience with the game. On top of that, we also want to provide everyone in our Free Company opportunities to take part in a tale of adventure driven by the ever-expanding lore of the game-world and the creative minds of our storytellers. If this sounds like the kind of place you're looking for, then we invite you to delve deeper and see if you fit us; and if we fit you! So please, pay us a visit at our website.
17. You're free to think whatever you want to think. I'm not here to snub anyone for doing what they want or saying what they want to say. =) I simply enjoy rping with more "normal" characters than say characters who have purposely been made strange or outlandish for the purpose of standing out. To me, playing someone whos average and having their personality and their humanity be the main draw is more of a challenge than coming up with interesting, but outlandish (potentially lore breaking) things to be the selling points. That's not to say that those characters with the outlandish origins or stories can't be amazing as well (or that I would ignore them - I don't ignore anyone), but again, normalcy its just my preference especially when it comes to characters that I create.
18. I've had... three alts since ARR launched. Miah was technically an alt. I made her after I got to 30 and unlocked Monk on my first character (a decent achievement at the time). I believe I felt that being a caster wouldn't fit my first character and I wanted to try one out, so I made Miah as a Arcanist, found that I enjoyed the character that I made and I've been playing her since. I don't see anything wrong with having a PvE main and a RP alt, if that's what makes sense for you, then go right ahead and do it. However, as others have said, there are going to be those that hesitate to RP with a character that they know is an alt because the player of the alt has already sort of declared their own investment in the character - as an alt its not first priority. RPing takes time and the players should get invested in the story and the relationships that are built, and many would rather not risk wasting time with a character they may not see around a month from now. There have been times when I had to deal with RP alts, and... well, its not easy really. Miahs significant other started off as an alt, and while they were still feeling the waters and dating, there were times that the alt situation became an issue. If I was going to tie Miah down to someone, I would want them to be around - I had just come back from a situation in Wildstar where my characters SO wasn't around often (eventually vanishing on me), leaving my character sad and lonely for most of the RP events. It wasn't something that I wanted to repeat. Eventually things worked out in FF14 though. Miahs SO became a main and they had their ceremony months ago. Its been great. I'm extremely happy that I decided to not blow off someone just because they were an alt.
19. I'm a pretty fervent believer that more "average" characters make better characters. If I keep that in mind when working on an origin or planning for the future, its pretty easy for me to keep my character(s) within the established lore. I don't view the games lore as a constraint, but more of a medium that we as RPers work with. The tools are there, and its up to us to create stories with those tools. Just as a good musician puts themselves into a cover of another musicians work. Its up to us to determine what liberties we can and should take, but we have to be aware that what we do may not sit well with others. Anyway! Enough rambling. If something were to come from SE in a loredump that contradicts something in Miahs history or her character or whatever, I would try to find a creative, sensible way to adjust to it. Failing that, I would just phase that aspect out - it would be pretty easy for me because Miahs character isn't dependent on anything that requires me to take many liberties.
20. This! I want my Ala Mhigans to remain dickish. I don't think that they will make the Ala Mhigans purely good and righteous. The people of Ishgard are pretty good examples that the devs take enough care in the population of their cities to not make them all the same or paint them with the same brush. There is a good deal of diversity within Ishgard, even though the city-state was insular (not a lot of foreign influence). Ideally, I would like to see the same kind of stuff that Seriphyn talked about. Shades of grey, on both sides. I want to see the good, the not so good, and the bad that the Garlean Empire has done for Ala Mhigo. I want to see Ala Mhigans who support the Empire just as much as I want to see Ala Mhigans who are opposed and those that are neutral (the American Revolution, probably like many other revolutions was much the same). I suppose I just want the characters in the game to be as human as possible. Diverse.
21. Whatever it ends up being, I'm going to be excited for it - I mean, I can't think of any location that would leave me feeling disappointed. I do feel as though we're going to go Ala Mhigo though, and that's wonderful - there are a lot of possibilities there.
22. I certainly wont be quitting over not getting a house, but I'll be really sad. I mean, like a lot of people here I've been working hard and saving my gil for a really long time in order to have a place of my own that isn't connected to my FC. What made SE implement housing in this way? I'll never understand. Its terrible. And now I'm really worried about the /busy thing. I didn't set up a macro for it and I know that the time I take to type is out is time that I won't be able to run to the plot I want.
23. This patch looks amazing, but what little we know of 3.35 looks even better. I am so hyped for Palace of the Dead and what possibilities it has for the future of the game. I mean, not only do I think it'll be a fun thing to do for simply PvE reasons, but I think its going to be an amazing device for RP (especially if we eventually get more locations). As for this patch... well, I really like the looks of the Ironworks DoL/DoH sets, and the western movie gear we saw on that MCH. Also OZMA.
24. Pray. That's what I'll be doing. Uh, but really... I'm going to be trying to do as much of these things as I can in order to get a house. My Eternal Bond Partner is going to try to get she and I the same plot in a different ward - so that'll help I hope. I don't really have very high hopes of getting a house though. I don't have a great connection and I'm a PS4 player so I can't really do extreme things like installing the game on a SSD. I'm prepared to extremely unhappy when I don't end up with a house. Maybe the apartments won't be that bad... but we also don't know anything about them yet.
25. Hey there! Yeah, unfortunately, getting on any of these super high population servers is a pain in the rear end. : ( Your best bet would be to wait until the servers are just about to come up from maintenance though - I know that some are able to make it then.
