Thread is over, everyone go home. I'd be flattered if anyone considered me that much of an authority. But it's fine, it's going to continue to be fine, and even the people saying "Well I won't RP with them" are still saying it's fine, just not fine for them. So why not? I think you misunderstand these threads sometimes Verad. Often the problem isn't "Can I or Can't I?" because the answer is obviously, 'yes, you can' The issue is "Will other RPers shun me, or will my personal narrative be rejected more often by others" And the answer to that is... well look at any thread on topics like these. One could argue whether or not it's right to be snooty about RPers who do lorebending or dramatic things with their characters, but it happens. I think many people would rather have a safer character that gets lots of RP, than a more fanciful character that doesn't get any. These threads are less about coming to a consensus and more about testing the waters, so people can get an idea of how their concept might be accepted ahead of time. That's how I see it anyway.

Nope, it's not like that at all. You're equating Onyxia (a singular named NPC) with a Primal, which is by lore an entity that can, in fact, be summoned repeatedly, that multiple groups know how to summon repeatedly, and that a group of entities are actively trying to spread the knowledge of how to summon to serve their ends. Onyxia and a Primal aren't even remotely the same thing. If Primals are only summoned extremely rarely, then: Why is there a register of people who have successfully faced down Ifrit and not been Tempered? (SMN quest line) Why do the Scions kill Tempered soldiers in a largely blase way, as if this were a duty to which they were accustomed? (MSQ, post-Ifrit) How do you have a regular supply of Tempered, Drowned, and Touched? (FATEs, backstory of the Serpent Reavers) Why do the Amalj'aa keep kidnapping people to Temper them and why do they have a place specifically to keep them? (S. Thanalan FATEs and map) Why is crystal theft by beast tribes a common issue? (MSQ, 2.1, and a bunch of FATEs) Why does the Immortal Flames have a problem with their numbers being drained by repeated battles with Ifrit and his followers? (MSQ, 2.1) I could go on. Regardless, I think we definitely disagree on the level of expertise and ability of adventurers, or at least the level of power primals represent, and that's fine. There's a wide range of power represented in adventurers in the spectrum of RP. I don't feel that your average primal summoning is WoL material; the WoL is only called in for the Big Deals. More importantly, I don't feel the WoL is that much more powerful than a skilled and talented adventurer. The WoL is in the right place at the right time, has powerful friends, and happens to possess two very useful things (the Blessing of Light and the Echo). At any rate, it's largely immaterial for this discussion because, again, RPing someone with significant martial prowess doesn't inherently screw over other RPers. IMO, it's poor form to make a character whose only characteristic is their martial power, sure, but that's not what we're talking about. Seizing control of an NPC does screw over other RPers, and that's why it's problematic -- and that, among other reasons, is why being buddies with the WoL (or any named NPC) is a bad idea. I do agree on this. There were primals before the WoL showed up, and after they left for Ishgard. Life goes on and somehow they are taken care of. The first few battles are supposed to have been very bloody in the lore, but as people learned more about them they've gotten better at dealing with them.

To be fair, having a one night stand with Thancred isn't very exclusive based on how they show him in 2.0 That's about as exclusive at being at the steps of faith, or the battle of Cartenau. He gets around.

Rawrrrr I want to chase Friont as well. C'EST LA VIE.

Fishers of men! Though I dont know if Eva plans to be 'mostly social' mu ha ha ha.

Well remember, there were lots of 'Warriors of Light' in 1.0 All of the legacy chars were 'one of' the WoL if they took part in the final battle. However /The/ warrior of light in 2.0, the person used as a mascot for the GCs and Scions to bring hope, is just you. But you're not the only one who was transported away that day~

Yes but there are other similarities, like his companions. Instead of the Scions the WoL has their party of characters with Job stones. My theory is that after Bahamut's fall, the cutscene WoL had a drastically different path that lead to their disillusionment with Hydalyn. You as a player are never described as looking similar to the WoL, and you're never supposed to have traveled with anything like his adventuring party. I think we might find that you as a player, and the scions, have been misled this entire time by Hydalyn.

This has actually been called into question since 3.1 MSQ. There's a strong correlation between the Warrior of Darkness and the highlander gentleman we've been following since early 1.0 cutscenes. Even his allies correspond to said cutscenes - Lalafell White Mage, Roegadyn Paladin, etc. It's entirely possible that "Derplander" is, instead, a failed Warrior of Light through canonical alternate universe / time travel shenanigans... unless we are positing that the canonical Warrior of Light looks identical to the Warrior of Darkness, which is not the case (if it was, the Archons would have pointed it out). I also think this is the case. I think the version we have seen all this time in cutscenes is a similar character from a different 'world' who has come to a different conclusion. They seem to think that it is Hydalyn who is the villain. If it's true, and we've been watching our nemesis this whole time, that is some masterful foreshadowing and trickery by SE.

If you want to be a mechanic you have level up handyman to lvl 30 and then get 15 lvls in plumber. Then you can go start the quest to get your job stone.
-
...then you are on the level of Raubahn, his son, or the other elite-looking captains in the GC Elite gear. Quite the claim. /not that it's not okay or anything, it's just a bold claim I get the impression that the fight was actually a little bigger than represented. Either way, It's ok to be cool! I don't think it's a problem if a character has done cool stuff, or been around cool people. It's just if they claim to have /influenced/ them.

I realize this is hyperbole, but, not entirely accurate. Nym and Qarn both got wiped out by plague. Two out of five known ancient civilizations ain't no one. (Not to mention 5th Umbral Calamity was a time period of famine, plague, and disease, so just about every 4AE civilization falls under the wiped out by plague category until we know more details.) Anyways hasn't this topic gone a bit... well off topic? I bet we'll find out eventually the plague was caused by trying to build a portal to the henceforth unmentioned realm of disease or something. A little off topic, I suppose. To get things back, is there anything stopping someone from creating a new job, and a new soulstone to store it in like the machinist? If I wanted my character to have the 'Corsair' job or something, and she built her own soulstone, is there a problem with that?

The backstory of all the fallen civilizations in ffxiv reads like cavemen science fiction. Everyone was a victim of their own hubris, everyone reached too far, did the forbidden thing, etc etc. No one ever gets taken out by a plague or economic turmoil or something. Everyone has to play god.

Roleplayer Uncertainty/Insecurity Theater
111 replied to Warren Castille's topic in Character Workshop
Tut tut.... we'll be fine.... just don't blow anyone up, insult any insecure folks, host too many Rp events, fail to host enough RP events, blow anyone up, accidentally recruit any asshats, blow anyone up, insult anybody or murder the FC leader and we're golden!!!! (I'm terrified too) But I love doing all those things -
I was under the assumption it's just what they use to toss their turrets and grenades out of. I think they are just guys with a gun but better. They're like um.... batman with a gun.

Going into it a little bit here, but a small point on reloading. Reloading any non cartridge based firearm is a pretty complicated task, especially one that holds multiple rounds. I would suggest basing any weapon you RP with on cartridges, or otherwise just don't reload in combat. It would likely take even a skilled operator several minutes to reload a 6 shot revolver, which would be impractical in most situations. The movie Django Unchained represented this well in its gunfights. No one ever reloads, ever. They just shoot the six rounds in their gun and then look for a new one, as no one has time to fuck around with powder and ball in a gunfight.
-
Ah yes, those are called a 'pepperbox' where each barrel has a round loaded into it. Unfortunately it's kind of stupid that they put them in, as you can only reload those manually. Each barrel has to be rotated, cleaned, and then filled with ball/powder. They were an early way to get multiple shots in a single weapon, but have no advantages (and many disadvantages) over a revolver. Wikipedia on pepperboxes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper-box

My character has made a few guns ICly and I have some knowledge of period firearm crafting. Basically you make guns in this era by taking an iron tube (though most early guns had octagonal barrels) and then drilling out a barrel. Then you attach it to whatever you're using for the mechanism and a wooden stock. Usually different craftsmen handle different parts of the gun. Different people do the stock, the barrel, and the mechanisms. Most of them guns in game have extensive engraving as well, so a jeweler would be involved. Guns have tended to be richly decorated up until the era of mass production, as they were usually the most expensive thing a person owned, possibly passed down from generation to generation. Kentucky rifles are a good example of this. All guns that machinests use seem to be breechloading, and thus are probably rifled for accuracy. The models can differ pretty wildly, but they all seem to use either a revolving cylinder or a break mechanism (think a hunting shotgun where it bends in half) for loading. I haven't seen any with a magazine loading system. Most of the guns are probably 40 to 55 calibre cartridges. Which historically can be accurate at ranges of several hundred meteres. The problem is that this is a fantasy game where people can punch robots to death, so history only gets you so far.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
111 replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Honestly at this point if something annoys me in a dungeon I just leave and try again 30 minutes later. It's two years in, I'm over telling people they're doing something wrong. If it's one person, I try to kick them, otherwise I just leave and do my beast tribers. Maybe not a healthy outlook but keeps me sane. -
I had decided through plenty of research and lack of patience, to create the character on Diabolos, then transfer over once im ready. As others have said, make 8 characters. It's the same cost to transfer 1 or 8, and you'll thank yourself later when you want alts.

In my defence i was the one who got diddled.

Good luck! I myself gave up on that sort of RP after I found out that someone I exchanged lewd words with might have been underage. I was like hmmm not good. After that I've only gone over pg-13 with people I know well. I dun wanna go to jail

I edited the Erotic into the post as I was deciding what would be the most proper way of labeling the form of RP, I am interested in... Rather than just saying "sex" or something of that sort. I would hope that my topic does not get locked as I hoped to communicate with those in the RP community through my welcoming post. If it does get locked, then I guess I will explore the forum and hope to socialize some with the community. I don't think there is any danger in that happening. I think some people just jumped to conclusions. Welcome to the forums, like I said there isn't much pure erp on here, but I'm sure you can find people to connect with. Lots of people on this site do ERP, but they tend to be rather... secretive about it.
-
That is a partial form of roleplay that I am involved in. Well, more power to you, but you might have better luck just walking around the quicksand. While ERP isn't taboo on these forums, most people tend to view it like cookies and ice cream. A sometimes food. You're welcome to rp what you like, but i doubt you'll make too many erp connections on here. I do not plan to limit my only RP to ERP, but I am certainly pointing out the fact that I am very interested in that form of roleplay. It may not be the most popular, but it is not the only thing I am interested in. The future may change things but I am new to FFXIV aswell as the RP that revolves around that. If there is another way of pointing out that I am interested in ERP other than involving the word "Erotic" please inform me. (I am NOT new to RP, just new to RP on FFXIV) Ah I get it! Well the sort of 'code word' that most people use on this game is 'Mature RP' which can mean a lot of things, but generally means 'I'm open for sex to happen during rp'. If most people see erotic they tend to think the character is just for erp and hooksups and such.
