The world of RP lives outside and within the game itself. Although your characters move about, and stand within the game, and we use the in-game channels for communication (/say, /em, /tell) the world our character's reside in is much more expansive than the game, and things often (and regularly) occur that cannot be captured within the limits of the game itself. This is part of what makes Roleplaying a much more immersive experience than just playing the game. A character dying is a death in this in-character realm of RP, rather than a death within the game itself. It can occur within the midst of events being described and carried about by role-players. These sorts of actions are often the part of pre-planned scenarios (as was the case in the most recent IC death I know of), although the outcome is unknown and often random rolling is used to help resolve what actually happens (like in dungeons and dragons if you have ever played). But, generally speaking, in free-form Roleplay, nothing can happen to your character that you do not assent to. That's kind of the foundation of the entire concept. If you do not want your character to die, he won't (that said, this is opening an entire can of worms, best not opened in a welcome thread, we have an older thread discussing the issue of whether or not players should be willing to let their characters die, if you're really curious about that discussion!).

If you click the link at the top of the page to the "WIKI", you can brows player character wiki pages from there. A lot of us have a multitude of information on character backgrounds posted there, as well as current relationships and RP events they have participated in. The server has a continuing story all to it's own that thrives through the community. So true! You can peruse it and see what people have done

Oh! I can answer the same questions I proposed! What area of Eorzea is she from? She was born in Ala Mhigo, and became a refugee when the city was attacked by the Empire. She moved about as a refugee for years, before finally settling in Ishgard where she remained until just before FF XIV's release! What did her parents do? Her parents were Ala Mhigan aristocrats (or nobles). Her father was a warrior, who lead his retinue of men in battle. When they left the city they became refugees like everyone else, but have desperately clung to the idea of who they once were. Is his family still alive? Yes, both of her parents, both of her brothers, and her adopted sister all are alive, and relatively well, in Ishgard (living with distant relatives, except for her brother Osvald who has started off on his own). What sort of education does she have? Her parents tried to educate her as she would have been raised in Ala Mhigo, but most useful things she learned as a child on the streets. She became an unruly teenager, and most of what she does well, she learned while a dancer during her teenage years. She has continued to learn since leaving Ishgard as well. What is she doing now? She's a barmaid at the Quick Sand!

    A Cup Tea?

Aya sits up a little, setting her nearly empty tea cup on the saucer. She lifts a chocolate, nodding in reply to Coatleque, with a simple, sweet smile. She watches her friend's eyes for a moment, happy that she seems to be enjoying their day off as well. She bites the chocolate in half as she stands from the divan with an easy, quiet grace, offering a hand up to Coatleque, before finishing the chocolate on her way to the door.

Wonderful! Welcome to RP! Hmm, I've never offered this sort of advice before, but I'll give it a shot! The first thing I would do is try to think of a very basic background (honestly I think backgrounds are somewhat overrated, though I do often put quite a bit of work into them, its really the in-character interactions that take place from the moment RP begins with the character that define him or her, rather than the background one may write!) I would not think of this in terms of a story, or in terms of a goal or objective. I would just think of it in terms of giving your guy a little bit to know about himself, and a little bit to talk about. What area of Eorzea is he from? One of the main city states? A small town? Forest, sea, mining, desert, trade post, maybe just a farm or vinyard? Etc? What did his parents do? This may be related to what is above: craftsman, or peasants, or soldiers, or police, etc. Is his family still alive? Most people prefer their characters to have no old ties, I kind of like the drama that still having a living family can add What sort of education does he have? Did he plan to follow in the foosteps of his parents? Was he an apprentice? Did he go to sea? Has he worked on the family farm? What is he doing now? Is he an adventurer? A mercenary? Just a guy off on his own for the first time? Even the most basic answers to these questions will give you an idea who your character is, and that can be helpful! Then, it comes to getting started with RP! As I have suggested in other threads, the best way to get started is just light, random RP to kind of get your feet wet, and learn generally how to interact with people, and learn how your character interacts with people. Go to an RP hotspot (I suggest the Quick Sand in Ul'dah, but there are other areas you may find people!) and politely try to start conversations. Try to introduce yourself, and meet people. It takes a little bit of outgoingness (which can take courage, I know!) and it can be hit-or-miss, but once you start making some friends and meeting people, you will start to meet more and more, and the ball sort of starts to roll on its own The hardest step is the first one, once you get going it should become more natural, and more fun!

    A Cup Tea?

"At least we've both found out place now." The words carried a weight that seemed to strike the girl. Her radiant smile softened, as if placed on pause for a moment. Behind bright blue eyes memories flashed, a lifetime passing before her in an instant. Traveling overland south from the Ala Mhigan ramparts whence she had come, through plains, forest, marsh, and desert. By sea, and by cart. Faces lost to eternity, heirlooms and sentimental trinkets vanished to all but memory; the detritus of a life once lived, gone now for ever after. She could feel the crash of waves on the cliffs below, the sea-wind, and the bonds of family. Upon further flight: the sight of towering trees and the rolling meadows at the foot of the city that towered even higher into the heavens. A foreign home, and prison the same. "A strange foreign girl", ever had she been. Not as a momentary state, but as her very state of being. One shared by the red-headed friend across from whom she sat. Aya nodded, tentatively. "Found a place, at least." she answered, with a voice as soft as it was reflective, eyes turned out upon the same street.
  7. However you broach it, whether with an OOC whisper, a mistaken identity, an offer for a drink, or a smiling "Hi!" (as is usually my case ) the key to meeting people to RP with is to be the one out there meeting people.
  8. Its a shame there's no physical representation of "gil" in game, so that I could make a couple's pic for Aya ^_~
  9. Rather than post, and then wait... be more pro-active. The hard part about starting random RP is always starting it, and that's what you're running up against. Just as you may feel a little awkward about walking up to someone you don't know to start a conversation in-game, they feel the same way about you. The only way to get across that hurdle is to just go ahead and start the conversation yourself! It may take a little bit of courage, and it doesn't always work, but it will be vastly more effective than passively fishing. I really suggest you give it a try! The worst that ever happens is either being ignored (oh no! Back to the situation we were already in!) or sometimes getting an irritated response (which is almost invariably IC, and not something to actually worry yourself about!) Trust me on this one, just give it a try!
  10. Welcome to Balmung! Welcome to RP! I agree with CC :-] find some light RP, usually easy to find around the main RP hotspots (try the "Adventurer's Guilds" in Ul'dah, Limsa, and Gridania (in order of most to least likely to find random tavern RP!)). Just get a feel for your character and how he interacts and everything

  12. Now boys... don't make me use this book... by, you know... hitting you with it.
  13. Little Mister Pumpkin! Will miss all of the great fun of the Piquant Pumpkin Cafe! I hope to see you around again :-]
  14. Music often inspires role-play ideas for me, especially scenes of events in the past. It has, at times, directly lead me to write up particular stories, or ideas, and flesh out characters along the way
  15. He goes by a different name now, which I always forget how to spell! He is around, I chatted with him recently
  16. Fortunately I have not yet encountered any Time Travelling Allagan Clone characters
  17. It iiiiiiiiiiis! It might even be intriguing! I'm just saying there's only one type of person that Aya is actually biased against (even with all of her smiles and cheer), and Ophelie is it!
  18. Aya is an Ishgardian Exile as well: she was a dancer, entertainer, and general all-around trouble maker. However, she is from the lower classes (she entered the city as a refugee), and has nothing to do with the Houses or their members (nor would wanted to have)
  19. Taaaaaaake care! Glad to hear no surgery is involved..! I do suggest you remain attentive though, I had a friend who went through a similar situation where the doctors sent her home only to have to come back two days later for an emergency appendectomy (though they did not do an ultrasound, so I imagine they have a much better idea what's going on in your case!)
  20. For some reason I just put this together.. Taylor Momsen! <3 The Pretty Reckless!

    Retconning

Sometimes people have the same name ^^ "No, no, NOT that John Smith!"
  22. Aya nods agreeable, the blonde girl's bountfil energy on clear display. "I would love to! I will have a few bells before I have to work!" She turns her grin upon the Miqo'te, her voice as bright as it is excited, "Is there anything that you would like to see?"
  23. I don't have an anime character inspiration for Aya, and I am at loss for one who resembles her (although I am sure there is one, the canon of anime is far reaching!)
  24. I like to think of Aya as pretty well balanced person, and character - she has definitely adopted several of the mentioned tones depending upon context. I don't like to think of her as limited to tone any more than I, as a person, am limited to a single tone In terms of action, Aya really does not have much experience in that, she's more of a passerby. In the past she did take part in some action scenes with her company, which were more along the lines of realistic than super-heroic, but I think that's a pretty easy line to blur, really. Most of our characters are as capable as, say, action movie characters rather than mooks
