Five Reasons Your Character Would Approach a Stranger (And Other Prompts)
Chompie replied to Verad's topic in RP Discussion
Oh no I meant to reply to this lovely thread ages ago and got halfway there and forgotttt D: So why would Arblis approach someone? 1. "Oooh, they look like they're really interested in something, I have to go see what it is!" 2. Sometimes a single look is all it takes to get the feeling that something is wrong and it's something she can fix. 3. Ever have one of those moods where you just want to find the toughest-looking guy around and get inside his head and mess with him? If your name is Arblis, such moods aren't exactly uncommon. 4. She's feeling particularly inspired with a joke or a prank and someone looks juuust perfect to try it with! 5. She's impressed by action or fashion and can't keep her mouth shut about it. --- And as for the sort of ways people can butt in and end up in a detailed conversation? 1. Arblis drops just about anything to respond to flattery. Including sentences she's right in the middle of. Anyone who flatters her MUST have good taste. 2. She's been caught eavesdropping. Arblis will happily explain all the many, many things that led to her standing in this exact spot to prove that she was definitely not eavesdropping on anyone and how nice of you to strike up a conversation with her, you truly are great for enriching this day! 3. Someone barges into a conversation she's having and adds their own well-thought-out ideas to it? Clearly this person is an expert and was supposed to be a part of this discussion all along. 4. The mere mention of ancient lost artifacts and shadowy histories is enough to make Arblis take notice and listen. Such mystifying unknowns prompt about a thousand questions, and no force in the world will stop her. 5. Look sometimes she's just really lonely and will take whatever conversation she can get, okay? Hey, coming up with all ten of those was easier than I expected. Feel like I missed something important though. -
LEYLINE EXPLOSION ROCKS THE GOBLET Though other sources blame a gas leak, our ace reporters sniffed out the truth behind the disturbance in the Goblet earlier this week. No gas leak could have caused the superficial destruction scattered about wards 3, 5, and 7 of the Goblet, nor the damaged foundations in ward 8. Work to restore the areas to their former splendor has been incredibly fast, but even construction workers agree the furrows they were filling were more likely caused by an irresponsible use of aether. The Thaumaturges' Guild denied any involvement or knowledge of the incident and refused to comment further. Our intrepid reporters, however, scored an exclusive interview with a resident of the Goblet's third district, who had much light to shine on the disaster. "See, it's all because everyone thinks they can put the aetherytes so close together!" said Trennan Redwood (61), "There were already too many here and they were weighin down the ley real heavy-like, and then this fad springs up about puttin in your own personal aetheryte on your front lawn! You know who came up with the personal aetheryte? That's right, the Garleans! They planned this all out, and you mark my words they're laughin their legatuses off as we speak!" __________ The writer must have forgotten to put their by-line on the article.

These days I kinda... completely ignore almost every RP Descriptor Tag. Most of em are so subjective that I can't really have any idea what intent is there. The two tags that I don't just gloss over are: Casual - This tells me they are much more receptive to scenes like "Trying Marmot Meat Because Of Peer Pressure" and just not that interested in scenes like "Theorizing The Effects of Void Influence On The Vylbrand Watershed" or "All Of My Friends Are Dead" I wish the word "Casual" wasn't a curse word in videogameworld. Erotic - A very clear descriptor. They want the . I appreciate this. It really sucks to strike up some RP and realize each party wants something way way different out of it. Dark and Mature and Heavy all don't really mean much to me. Dark could mean detailed descriptions of gore, or it could mean someone who attempts suicide any time the word 'wife' is mentioned. Or it could mean comedic antihero brood-offs! Mature, I can never tell if it means they want cerebral stuff or traumatic stuff or are just using it to mean ERP but without the stigma, or if they're just really interested in RP about doing the dishes or dealing with budgets. Heavy could mean several of the above, or could mean they want to commit to a year-long story, or it could mean that they spend 8 hours a day in-character. Those are all very different things! I am easily befuddled.

This is my favorite joke answer to "What song fits Arblis the best?" f__lLLoe6D0 She WISHES she had a theme with dramatic nonsense chanting.
-
Ooh, I gotta try that one! Sounds like fun!
-
... you find yourself brainstorming one-liners that suit every possible future character development. Even the ones that just plain won't happen.
-
Oh my gosh I love reading all these so much! Trying to mush a whole lot about a character's history into one dumb-sounding sentence is the purest form of art. Arblis: Overconfident catgirl fails to understand the concept of bullying.

I would looooove to make a contract, I just need to figure out what FOR first...

I know all of you have been waiting for it, and the time is now! Quetzalcoatl is a host, and might be theeeeree~ Better show up early! Seriously though everyone else is super rad too. When you read "Rest assured though - all of our Hosts and Hostesses have their own unique merits and advantages!" it's not just platitudes! Peeps be awesome! Quetzalcoatl has the most merits and advantages though. -

Oh hey, I saw you around when I was derping in Limsa this evening. I'll try and start an argument with you or something next time I see ya! -
I think the moral of the story is not that nasty, annoying facets of how communities work exist, but rather that everyone who's distressed about (or even has come to accept) The Bad Parts has gotta be nice and play nice.

Is your character open for killing/death? What about injury?
Chompie replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
Oh, THAT'S the reference I was thinking of! Yeah, I've never really been a fan of the George R. R. Martin School Of Everybody Dies All The Time So Get Used To It. -
A character concept you always wanted to try...
Chompie replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
I don't often get character ideas beyond just "I want to play this personality style," but there's one that popped into my head a while back and I shared with a few people. I kinda want to play a character who charms a small group of novice healers into following him/her around. A personality that's hard not to follow, even if just to see what they'll do. With more brains or ambition they might have been a great leader, but instead it's just some bullheaded idiot constantly getting into trouble and needing their medic buddies to bail them out. GREAT for a healer's resumé! An unending fount of practical experience! Wacky hijinks! Like a harem anime but with less romantic tension and more facepalming! I suppose I could almost justify moving my current character in that direction, but she doesn't quite have the sheer force of personality (or dashing charmer looks) that would make it work. Also, of course, it's a concept that requires other people to go along with it, which is a good way to end up never playing a character in the first place. -

Chompie replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
I'm definitely just echoing a few other people from this thread, but it comes down to one simple statement: My character will only die if it makes for a damn good story. It's as simple as that! RP is an exercise in cooperative storytelling. If the death of a character affects others in a way that isn't interesting? Then nope. If the character's death doesn't really serve any narrative purpose? Nope. A lot of people are here for fun, not realism. Realistic elements are there to add to fun, not to take away from it just because Realism says so! Injuries are the same way. If it aint gonna add something interesting, then.. nah. Quite a few injuries would just make Arblis REALLY PISSY and that's only entertaining for about an hour. Others lead well to slapstick or teamwork or slow-burning angst! It's all about the outcome. -
balmung Host Club | Rendezvous | December Opening!
Chompie replied to Flora's topic in Chronicled Events
I can confidently confirm the coolness of the... c..host... club. Awful alliteration aside, I really really reccommend the event! These are fantastic people, and they will for certain make sure you have fun! Joooin roleplaaay~ -
I'm the kinda wanderer who sees an ongoing plot and thinks "Hey, that's pretty cool" before simply moving on. I tend to tailor my characters to the same attitude. Bars bore me, as do official functions and political intrigue. Anything remotely serious REALLY has to grab my curiosity for me to get pulled in. ... and I think the best I've ever meshed with a lovingly-crafted plot is when I was playing a very low-threat Team Rocket-style villain. I guess my response boils down to "DnD-style RP, Comedy RP, and Other (Being a recurring pain in the butt)"

If I ever found a journal in some old Allagan ruins that described what the place was like, it would be an amazing find! If there's another huge Calamity, even boring writings about what cities look like would be interesting again! It's important for me to write- one day I might be the key to discovering history! Gridania. Gridania is a peaceful place where most of the buildings are built into old tree stumps or hills or things like that. It's a nice thought, but... I'm not sure I like the place very much. I'm sure there are way fewer people than in Ul'dah, and yet... it feels so crowded. Maybe it's because of all the leaves being blown through the city? A few times I heard people refer to the Elementals and the Will of the Elementals and that sort of thing. Maybe that crowded feeling is because those Elementals are invisible and brushing shoulders with everyone. I don't know! I didn't stay long. When people glared at me as I passed by, it was.. different. Not like the predatory stares Ul'dahn merchants give everyone. I'm not sure what the Gridanians wanted from me. Maybe just 'gone'. ... I'm already comparing everything to Ul'dah like I've lived there my whole life. I'm writing these words on a cloudy day in Limsa Lominsa, away from prying eyes that might say "Hey, stop writing bad things about our Gridania!" Limonsa is pretty great! The sea breeze and all the white stone the place is built from make it almost otherworldly... And all the "yarr bosun tradewinds scuttle me bankships" talk probably helps make it seem stranger than it really is. I think I'll go check out the smithing guilds, maybe I can learn a few tips to keep my gear in better shape. --- I met... a... person. A drama queen. A lighting-fast master of short blades. Someone very hard to describe. I lent him a helping hand, and as the sun finally broke through the clouds, he moved with a flash, and uh... My hair looks pretty fantastic now!

I don't think I know any words that can say how excited I am! REALLY VERY EXCITED A LOT! With all the refugees milling around the city with no place for them to stay, I thought I'd never have a place inside Ul'dah that could be my base camp, but.. here I am! Momodi caught me an inn room as thanks for all the strange monsters and tiny uprisings and thug groups I've taken on in the last few weeks! It's mine now! I can come here whenever I want! I can leave things here! I can't even think of all the possibilities! I don't even know what to do with myself! --- Since I've clearly won the best prize Ul'dah could possibly give me, I decided to ride an airship around to the other big cities. They're.. different! I'm not sure if I like it. Gridania is mostly carved into trees and hills and Wait a minute. I'm writing about boring things, aren't I? I didn't write a journal to log boring things! (a couple of impatient doodles are scribbled on the bottom corners of the page) (( I returned to FFXIV after a year or so and found a couple half-finished entries in my Megalixir folder. Finished em up and here I am again. Hooray for writing! I will never forgive myself if I forget to finish all the entries I'm working on. ))

This paragraph right here is what fuels me when I play villains. Knowing that people aren't quite as ALIVE as when they have a villain to chase after is just... huge. Hell, I've used it as a character motivation- not to do evil for evil's sake, but to do mischief because my character isn't great with words or inspiration, and it's the only way they know to help others grow as people. A twisted kind of friendship for someone with a little masochistic streak in them. It helps, of course, that I tend to play "Team Rocket" kinda bad guys much better than I play "World Destroyer" or "Controlling Mastermind" types. I can't give much in the way of advice for playing the latter two in a satisfying way. Man, I do really want to try playing a villain here in FFXIV though. I doubt my current could have the kind of developments necessary to become one though, and as for making new characters? Well, maybe if I get *real* lucky.

Oh woah! This sounds absolutely rad. I'd love to take part in some of your events once Arblis is... a little bit less wimpy. ... and I don't usually even like scheduled events! But this sounds so perfect!

I. Basic Info Characters: Arblis Ellhis Primary character: Arblis Ellhis Linkshells: Rendezvous of Stars Primary RP linkshell: Rendezvous of Stars II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Medium??? I thought I couldn't do serious but I think I was wrong. I'm usually in character- adventuring is a huge part of Arblis' life, after all. The best ways of starting spontaneous RP with me: Take any excuse to stop me in the middle of the street! For a great opportunity, or a compliment, or a scam, or to say I look stupid, or that I looked at you funny. I'll roll with just about anything. Even better, if you find me while I'm out adventuring, having someone stop me for just about any reason would be a dream come true! I don't care whether you have to imply that I'm murdering harmless animals for no reason or that I'm holding my sword all wrong- any excuse is a good one! Heck, accuse me of some crime I probably didn't even do! That'd be lovely~ Arblis is a recklessly curious explorer- it's pretty easy to come up with something that would interest her, or something she plausibly might have done to annoy someone she's never met. Has happened before. Views on RP combat and injuries: For combat... well, it's a whole lot of "I think this except in the hundred and fifty situations where I don't." As long as it makes something resembling sense, I'm happy whether it's verbal jousting, PvP mechanics, or modified die rolls. Injurywise... normally, I'm all thumbs-up gung-ho things-could-happen, but.. I'm not going to go for any injury that means I would have to stop playing the game. I like a good RP, but I like a good videogame as well. Views on IC romance: I've got no problem with it! Can't say Arblis is particularly interested, but when has that ever meant anything? Views on non-romantic RP relationships (family ties, etc): Vague shrug Views on lore: It's interesting, and can be handy to know, and I know almost none of it (and will probably bullshit my way through everything). Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): Unless there's a very good reason not to, I prefer that RP is in /say. A good RP is not just about making a fun story with someone- it can also brighten the day of anyone passing by, whether they want to participate or not! In fact, I'd say it's vitally important to use /say. It gets pretty lonely out there when it looks like nothing is happening just cause everyone's words are tucked away in private spaces. III. Other Info Country:United States Timezone:Pacific (GMT -8)... SORT OF. I'm a very night-timey person. It's not super-common to see me in-game before 10PM. Think of me as an Australian who gets up/goes to sleep early. Contact info: Twitter is probably the second-best way to get my attention. The best way would maybe be skype, but I don't really like to throw that around willy-nilly. Skype is awful, after all. Send me a Forum PM if you wanna get in touch, I spose? I check that around every threeish days. I meant what I said earlier about trying to roll with anything you throw at me. That's what makes roleplaying fun! My favorite song I've heard in my short time playing so far... the nighttime theme for Ul'dah is fantastic (and I LOVE how it follows the same general tune of the day one), but all my love is for the FATE miniboss music. Which I couldn't find anywhere on youtube to show my friends for an example.

Oops. I was really really nervous and once I found someone who was selling shields I just wanted to get it done and leave the market as fast as I could, but... I think I messed up. I thought I bought a shield but.. once I got out of the market district and looked at it.. I think I must have picked up a chef's cutting board by mistake. I don't want to go back in there though, so.. I guess I can try strapping it to my arm? I hope nobody notices...

The people at the Gladiators' hall said I was a natural! They had me bully some bullies, even though that's really not hard to do! I mean, it would have been a LOT harder to stand back and watch those big marauders push around a bunch of wimpy merchants! ... maybe that's what they mean about being a natural? Well anyroad, they fitted me for a suit of custom armor! It looks so awesome! And it's way more comfortable than I thought it would be! Everyone always says "oooh no, stick with lighter armor, the heavy stuff is really uncomfortable" but they're totally wrong! I still don't have a shield though. I guess I'll have to go into the market streets and.. buy one. I really wish there was an easier way to get one. Ul'dah is kind of scary when it comes to gil. And the markets get really crowded. And I'm not really sure how much gil anything is worth. And .. I need to stop thinking about it and just do it before thousands of years pass and everything crumbles to dust! (( I should probably add, sorry if my writing is a little inconsistent! I realized I'd never really written for a character in first-person, and I've never written anything resembling a journal even for myself. Sooooooo why not try it? Still working on getting the style and length and focus right. How do you write easily-distractedness? How do you give context without it sounding fake and forced? How do I avoid suddenly becoming excessively verbose instead of sticking to the short declarations my character prefers to use? I'm sure I'll figure it out. Writing is learning! ))
