  1. For the Sylphs, yes. I think it was mentioned that milkweed was noxious for the PC races, though. Sylphs also use slime from the dreamtoads... and I can't remember any in-game mentions of it not working for the PC races. So I -guess- people could go and lick toads to get high... Yes, I forgot to mention that part. It's highly addictive and hallucinogenic for mortal races, as well. It's just also really, really toxic for them, too. I forget where I read it, but apparently the toxicity still doesn't deter people who want the high off it. At least in 1.0, it was apparently a problem for a portion of the population. Aah. Yeah, I've only been playing since ARR's release, and my experience with the stuff made me feel like I was carrying around a bunch of skunk cabbage. Is Moko more tobacco based or cannabis? If it's more tobacco then is there even a cannabis equivalent? I'm looking for some item that is used to relieve stress. Try hops. Smoked or turned into a tea, it's a mild sedative and brings up your mood. And we've got beer/ale, so they're kicking around somewhere. There's other ones out there, as well. Anyways, back to the OP (cause apparently I managed to delete that part of my first post without realizing...) With a bit of research... as long the methods of producing are reasonable for the technology apparent in the game and there's no direct, in-game dialogue against it, it's fair game. There's plenty of herbs/brews that have been used for thousands of years, so with a bit of research there's plenty to be found. For example, if kukuru beans are the equivalent of cocoa beans (as the icon appearance and actual usage in the game suggests)... technically the only reason Eorzea doesn't have cocaine is the lack of technology to extract, condense (since cocoa leaf tea/chewing cocoa leaves isn't enough to get you high) and stabilize it. I personally peg Erozea's tech levels to mimic what was available during the Renaissance/Age of Exploration (with Garleans being Steampunk), so I might be allowing more than other people are willing.
  2. We see NPCs holding pipes, and there's no soap bubbles coming out of it so I assume there's some sort of smoking going on. I'd put tobacco up there with coffee -- if there's absolutely no nicotiana tabacum/nicotiana rustica plants in Erozea, there's probably plenty of the other tobacco substitutes kicking around like there are in real life: peppermint, spearmint, catnip, various forms of sage, lobelia, lavender, hops, calamus root, licorice root, mullein, just to name a few. For the Sylphs, yes. I think it was mentioned that milkweed was noxious for the PC races, though. Sylphs also use slime from the dreamtoads... and I can't remember any in-game mentions of it not working for the PC races. So I -guess- people could go and lick toads to get high...
  3. I use a personal greyscale system, where I assign a 'natural/starting state' and then determine a range that I feel the character should be free to move around in that extends towards both black and white. If I find that I'm joining in RP that's closer to the darker side, the natural/starting state might start to slip that direction, and if the opposite happens, she can start moving towards the white. If I were to put it in numbers, with 1 being white and 20 being black, Kara sits at 12, with a range of 4 to 14 -- her natural state, she's a bit lacking in morals and can slip to a bit worse, but she has potential to be a pretty good person.
  4. I've heard about said linkshell. Shaming people, homophobia, and sexual repression seem to be family-friendly. I'm... ever so glad I feel like I definitely dodged a bullet now. I've had no idea what has gone on with this because when I experienced that it was months ago when I first started and the linkshell was just being made. The soured experience made me... well, not care when the person said he was quitting the forums. Pretty happy now if that's what's going on cause I'm not at all ok with those "family-friendly" values. I think I know which one you're talking about, too... I liked their old recruitment /shout and /yell message which stated that they were the only non-ERP RPLS on the whole server >_>
  5. Momodi knows because she casts a special spell that changes her eyesight; every time she looks at a person, their name and adventuring status is floating above their heads. Anyways, I again point out the following dialogue, from an NPC in the Quicksand that is blatantly an employee OF the Quickand: Papasu: Hello there, traveler. Have you tried any dishes at the Quicksand yet? Nothing prepares you for a day of adventuring like a hearty meal, you know! >What would you like to know? >Option: Why is it called "The Quicksand"? Papasu: Have a look around you─all manner of folk get caught in the lure of the Quicksand! They gather here to meet and mingle with one another. Papasu: 'Course, you adventurers are less like to linger long. Aye, your kind is not unlike sand itself─the more tightly we try to hold on to you, the easier it is for you to slip through our fingers... Papasu: Oh, I know all about your type. My husband used to be an adventurer, you know. Oh, he was quite a gallant hero way back when. But his days of derring-do are but a distant memory now─aye, and his strapping physique as well. As far as I'm concerned, there's lore verification RIGHT THERE in the Quicksand that is accessible at any time and by anyone that says everyone's welcome there (and if you wanna be strict... lore that says adventurers shouldn't be hanging around much). So, yeah, this guy gives anyone a hard time, fire the blacklist cannon.
  6. Well, if your char has never had combat training before, I could see Archery for the sole fact that they wouldn't be in-the-monster's-face. Plus, archers are fairly popular in the Shroud, so it could be something that your char is more familiar/comfortable around. Arcanist or Tharmaturge, those could make sense in the fact that they're still caster jobs. What could be a nice IC-struggle would be learning the different ways of casting (Arcanist being mathematical formulae, Tharmaturge being aether manipulation if I remember correctly, versus Conjurer's borrowing from nature). Really, what you should do is sit down and come up with some sort of IC reason for changing. Branching out for more knowledge? Frustration from being the one in the back 'always being protected'? Starting to feel flabby and wanting something to use as exercise? Maybe something has happened and your character needs to start developing non-magical abilities to avoid detection? Got an invite to start training at another guild with a friend? Did something happen to get you thrown out of your current guild. Unless you put some sort of restriction on your character yourself, there really isn't much that's keeping you from doing any change you want. I would just suggest you find an IC reason rather than a 'Hey guys! Look! I'm suddenly a !"
  7. ... Wow. And even more 'wow' just on the point you're making this in a hotel. Were you able to get a little sewing machine in there with you, or is this all hand sewn/Liquid Hem'd?

*head tilt* Huh. Okay, truck-stop McDonalds franchises apparently have a different "Dollar Menu" burger than the regular locations; I've seen nothing but doubles on the Dollar Menu for the past three years. Go ahead and bump Kara to... say... five of these little things. She could probably eat seven or more on a hungry day.
  9. Go ahead and PM the information (screenshots if you have any, an RP description of appearance/clothing/personalities, and any other suggestions), and I'll take a look at it and see what I can do.

Hrm. On a day where Kara was able to keep her normal eating habits (which includes almost hourly snacking), she'd be a one. Day where she wasn't allowed to snack at all, it would probably be five. The Gardener... zero. She's a vegetarian. She's probably consume 75% of the Apple Pie-chart, though.

... Oh, why not? If I can make it, I'll toss in either Kara (depending on what she's doing otherwise at that time) or the Gardener.
  12. ... was almost killed as a young child by cows that may have been high on pot. My grandparents own a farm and they used to raise cows, chickens, goats, pigs, horses, etc. One afternoon, I was playing outside and the cows decided to stampede through the barbed-wire fence. Me being about two years old at the time, didn't comprehend that this was a bad thing and didn't try to run away. Thankfully the person who was watching me finally snapped back to reality and was able to run and grab me before I got trampled. It took a while to round up the cows because they were acting very strange. And not the 'predator got into the pasture' kind of strange... the 'ate something bad' type of strange. Which isn't unheard of, anyone who raises livestock knows that there's certain plants that need to be avoided altogether, others that should never be put into dried hay, and to watch the condition of hay because certain types of mold/mildew can cause problems. Inspection of the hay turned up nothing, so they went out to check the cow pasture and found, in one of the far back corners... marijuana plants that showed signs of being chewed on.
  13. ... As much as I'm out of practice... What're you thinking about for the WoW stuff? Cause I'm pretty sure that with a bit of getting back into the groove, I can still churn that sort of stuff out (the semi-realism of XIV, I struggle with developing a style for, for some reason). Panda-People came out after I left the game, so I never had a reason to try my hand at them, but... *shrugs*
  14. I kind of just consider the term 'adventurer' in XIV as a sort of blanket term to apply to anyone that has the potential to be something other than just a mundane civilian. I wish I could remember exactly where I either heard/or saw this, but a conversation with a Dev at some point brought up that only a portion of the population (not including Garleans) has enough control over their own personal aether to use aetherytes/aethernet reliably -- this is why a PC will return to an aetheryte when KO'd/in critical condition whereas most non-adventurer NPC will likely die in the field and their body remains there. So, this makes me think that from a game-mechanic-explained-with-lore-reasons standpoint, that there is -some- other quality out there (not necessarily the Echo, because that's supposed to be rare) and that not everyone decides to do the "go out and fight monsters and go on fantastic adventures!" thing just because they have it. Lack of this quality (from a mechanic standpoint) also isn't a hindrance for people trying out to go and fight monsters, as that party you see during the missions revolving the first three dungeons illustrates. Most other games, adventurers just seem to be a portion of the population that go out and do things above the regular civilian norm -- they may not always be combative or magic users, but they certainly don't just sit around town, raising a family, working a regular job, having an un-eventful life.
  15. Emma takes a seat across from Kara and steals the test out from under the Hyur's pen. "What'cha doing?" "... They're testing us now." She tries to take the test back from the Corpsetaker. "Now, give that back so I can return to my game." "Oh, calm down... hey, you answered this one wrong." Emma swats away Kara's hands as she pulls a red pen from her pocket, crosses out the question, and writes a note under it. --Insufficient details about hypothesized scenario. Are we dealing with strictly program-abiding malboro? Roleplay-behaviored malboro? Hentai-fanfiction malboro? Is the hero wearing full armor, a battle bikini, or Japanese-schoolgirl uniform? Why are tentacles not included in the answer pool? Or is this a subtle hint that this is the hentai-fanfiction malboro scenario, and 'genitals' also covers 'tentacles'?-- Jumping across the table, Kara finally manages to snatch back the test, and then stares at the red writing in horror. "... EM! Holy crap, are you TRYING to get me in trouble?!" She glances at the clock, then groans. "Devs damn you... I have to turn this in in five minutes... I have no chance to re-write all this! I hope Mae hurries the hell up and defeats that pesky Writer's Block so you can get back to work and quit trolling the rest of us..!" ----- ... My brain is a scary place right now...
  16. *sneaks in* Ah... hi? I don't know if it's the sort of thing you're looking for to add, but I have this running out of Wineport. If it fits the purpose of this thread, go ahead and add it to where-ever it belongs.
  17. "Now we're just about done, but I see you left the Name section blank. Just tell me your name and I'll write it down for you." UnMerc shuffles his feet awkwardly, looking around the room. "Sir? Sir, I have to have something to call you." UnMerc scratches the back of his head and looks at the ceiling. "Sir please leave." "Noah Unn" ... ... ... ... ... ... "Sir, I need a name..." *scribbles down a complex, nonsensical symbol* "Sir, what's this?" "It's that." *points at symbol* "... Okay, but what is this? What's it called?" "It doesn't have a name." "... SIR!" "... Call me... The Mercenary Formerly Known as Prince."
  18. *makes a so-so motion* My LS is RPing MSQ, so Kara has signed up... if only because Clive made her do it. She hasn't been too enthusiastic about it.
  19. This is not the first, second, or even third time I've seen or heard that sort of behaviour/reaction in the Quicksand. Not sure if it's the same person(s) each time. Problem is... the three big NPC's in the Quicksand either (on the surface) support or say nothing against this view. I swapped to a character I have lurking on another server (she's level 4, so this is probably as close as to NPC dialogue to someone who's RPing a non-Adventurer) and this is what I got. Momodi: You've found your way to the Quicksand, friend. As you can see, we cater to a clientele with an adventurous streak. Momodi: With the chaos left in the wake of the Calamity, the townsfolk'll be needin' the help of my patrons more than ever. -- She does say that the Quicksand caters to adventurers. -- However, she never says that it is -exclusively- for adventurers. Otopa Pottopa: Good day to you, adventurer. Do you seek lodgings at the Hourglass? Otopa Pottopa: Pardon me, what was your name again? Malay Sant? Hmmm...I've heard nothing from Mistress Momodi about this. Alas, without her express permission, I cannot permit you to stay. >What would you like to do? >Option: Ask about the Hourglass. Otopa Pottopa: The Hourglass is only the most famous inn on the Merchant Strip. Otopa Pottopa: We have accommodations to satisfy every client's tastes, from lavish suites to simple rooms. Otopa Pottopa: Were circumstances different, I would gladly invite you to make use of our facilities. However, we have had to enact certain policies in the wake of the Calamity and the unpleasantness that followed. Only those who have proven themselves trustworthy are permitted to stay. Otopa Pottopa: Should Mistress Momodi deem you one such individual, you may enjoy our hospitality at will. -- Okay, so this guy won't even do business with you unless you're vetted by Momodi. -- HOWEVER... he runs the Hourglass, not the Quicksand. Eustace: My apologies, ma'am, but I am not authorized to issue guildleves to those as new to adventuring as you appear to be. Perhaps you should speak with Momodi Modi across the hall and see if she cannot point you in the right direction. -- Another that won't do business with you until Momodi says you're good. And his service is for adventurers. Okay. So that's the big three in the room... and it's not pretty. Thankfully, none of them say anything along the lines of "You're not an adventurer, so get the heck out!". The other NPC's don't say much else, just bits of flavor text... except for one. Papasu: Hello there, traveler. -- Here it is, game text that says more than just adventurers come into the Quicksand. -- Iiiiiinteresting... According to this, if you wanted to adhere to the lore of the Quicksand... if you're an adventurer, you shouldn't be hanging around the Quicksand much... Hope this helps for future 'dealings' with those types of people.
  20. You'll want to search "Malay Nihlo", actually. If we get the name change ability (without server-hopping), it's one of the things on my to-do list. I only really started to develop her as a serious character after I'd gotten quite a few levels under her, and I didn't feel like deleting and starting over >_>;
  21. Across the realm, a curious little poster has been cropping up at knee-height-to-an-Elezen, behind benches, and above tables... Fine print at the bottom reads: Results of some sort are guaranteed, the exact results you are hoping for are NOT guaranteed. ------------------------------------------------------- [[Apologies if this is in the wrong section, move if needed]] How this works: -- For anyone willing and able to track down the Gardener in/around Wineport, can last a conversation with her, and meet her price, she will create/concoct a potion, charm, ward, talisman, remedy, etc., to suit an RP need or desire. -- It can be a silly, serious, or just plain weird request, I don't mind. Flea control? Preventing/stopping hair loss? Weight loss? Warding away the Ishgardian Yeti? Dowsing rod to help track down a missing wedding ring? All viable. I'll even go as far as those ads that slip through your email's spam filter every once in a while... if you know what I mean. -- The Gardener's price varies: sometimes it will be an item for barter, sometimes it will be for a reagent, sometimes it will be gil. While I do expect an exchange/payment to happen ICly, you will not be required to actually hand over a requested item or gil amount. I'm not giving out physical items, I don't expect any in return. -- The Gardner is not an alchemist. What she is doing is closer to what IRL would be called herbal remedies and herbal witchcraft. Miles may vary based on belief. -- While the ad says no appointment needed and show up whenever... the Gardener is an alt (actual character name is Malay Nihlo, so search that), so I'm not on her all the time. If you have a request and seem to be missing me in-game, send me a PM here and we'll OOCly set up a meeting. -- This whole concept is meant to be nothing more than a fun little enhancement to overall RP. -- There is a 'proprietary ingredient' in all potions/charms/wards/etc, and it is something that only the Gardener and those who work with her have access to. This is more of a fail-safe mechanic, to prevent the 'theft' of some of, say, the love/lust/affection potions -- I want to avoid a backlash from the community if someone decides to break my trust. This is not to say that I want to prevent other people from developing their own potionmongers... I just don't want to be copied exactly or have a backlash of "it's her formula" Regarding Love/Lust/Affection potions, and requests along those lines Love/Lust/Affection potions (and other similarly working requests) can tread too close to the godmoding/metagaming line, or go over it. I am willing to still make these sorts of potions, however I have some rules so that no-one is angered. I have to trust that people will honor my rules/conditions, and people I catch or hear that have broken my trust, I will not RP business with again. To define: Love potion -- this is actually for a person (or couple) that want to have an actual relationship, but one or both parties are shy. It is actually nothing more than a confidence booster, "to make the first move, to touch or smile or speak instead of sigh longingly and look away". Lust potion -- an aphrodisiac, nothing more. Lasts for as long as it's in a person's system, effectiveness varies based on person's tolerances, results vary. A person who is affected with this is just as likely to stumble away to the nearest closet for some frantic 'alone time' as they are to run home to spouse/partner as they are to grab nearest willing partner. Affection potion -- the 'adoring puppy' effect. Think Cupid's arrow, the effects of the Love-in-Idleness in Midsummer Night's Dream, or that guy from The Craft; the target is utterly entranced/bemused. This, however, has the highest chance of blowing up in the requestee's face, as a bit of interference or bad planning could get the target entranced with the wrong person, turn them from loving to obsessive stalker, or make them incapable of doing anything else except thinking/daydreaming of the requestee. It also might just flat-out not work. Mr. Freeze: Pheromone dust, designed to heat a man's blood... Too bad it doesn't work on the cold-hearted. Rules for requesting/using one of these potions: -- Unless they are going to be used on/between a character, NPC, or Alt that you own or control (meaning, you are the ONLY one involved in the effects or is a love potion that will be used only on yourself), I will require the name of the target player(s)/character(s) that will/can be affected by the potion so I can contact them. I will not RP handing out a working potion until I have contacted the target or been assured that the potion is for NPC/alt use only. -- When I contact them, I will tell them that someone (I will leave names out unless otherwise authorized) has requested a potion that would be used on them. I will then explain the type of potion, the possible effects, and then inform them that THEY are the ones that decide if, how, and how long the potion affects them. -- A target is fully within their rights to refuse to participate by stating that the potion will not work on them (immune to effects, allergic to ingredients, what-have-you) or by having it not work according to the requestee's plan (immediately stumbles off for alone-time in the nearest broom closet, becomes utterly infatuated with the potted plant that was next to his/her seat, stuff like that). -- Unless otherwise specified, all potions are single use/dose. Halving or even saving a sip or two 'for later' will result in the potion not being effective. -- Be responsible about resulting RP. I will be INCREDIBLY upset and angry if I find out that my efforts spawned a rape, non- or dub-con RP, a disgusting PDA, or forced someone to ERP when they didn't want to. "No" means "No" both ICly and OOCly, keep it classy, 'fade to black' looks good in all situations and occasions, and for the love of the gods... if you're like-minded with ERP, take it someplace private. What happens if/when someone breaks my trust: -- The first and obvious is that I won't RP business with that person again. If I'm angry enough, don't be surprised if I refuse to RP with that person at all, ever again. -- If I discover there are cases where someone is improperly using my potions (the vial has suddenly been enchanted to be a "Bottle of Endless Lust Potion", using potions on wrong targets, stockpiling, trying to pass off that a single drop is a full dose, etc., claiming that a target HAS to have the effects that they want despite the target not wanting to participate) or decided that they are going to 'figure out the contents' for themselves and produce their own supply despite the 'proprietary ingredient' in all of the potions I may decide to create a Wall of Shame. I know some people might argue this as me airing out dirty laundry, but these potions do creep up to a very sensitive area in RP and I sort of feel that it is my responsibility to the community to warn if someone has blatantly broken or abused the agreement they had with me. Note: this ONLY applies to improper use of potions that are continued to be RP'd as having originated from me/my character. If there is a sudden uprising of new potionmongers (again, all for competition in this 'market') with their own unique concoctions or it's just a generic potion, there's nothing I can say about it. Regarding hexes, curses, bad-luck charms, and poisons: The Gardener is morally neutral, and would take a request for a bad-luck charm as she would a request for arthritis medicine. They follow a similar rule-set as the love/lust/affection potions. HOWEVER, there are people with a better moral compass around the Gardener, and they may switch out/mess up a hex, curse, bad-luck charm, or poison as they see fit -- you may just as well walk away with a bottle of poison as you would a bottle of spiced vinegar.
  22. ... Two words: Garlean Garlic. Good lord! I personally think Bad breath would be waaaaaaaaaay too OP... though mostly everyone else doesn't seem to think so... Hm! I'd like some breath attacks, some basic heal and a bunch of buffs if i'm honest! I love me some buffs!!! Slightly Bad Breath was in XI. It came from an item, but... *shrugs*
  23. Provided, I haven't been on a lot recently due to some RL changes I'm going through... I see RP in Limsa and Gridania often enough that I can't say that there's never RP there. It's just quieter, and usually in places other than the Canopy and Drowning Wench. The Canopy seems more prone to trolling/disruptive-to-RP-behaviors than the Quicksands and Drowning Wench (even from other RP'ers, believe it or not; I actually had an RP-LS leader jumping up and down like a crack-addicted monkey on my table, alternating between advertising for both the RP-LS and FC he/she/it ran and doing massive /emote spam to Miounne). As someone pointed out earlier, I suspect that part of the reason why the Drowning Wench is quiet is because Limsa is just so oddly constructed, and it's not in a major path of travel except if one is going to an inn room. I also see RP enough out in the outlying zones (Shroud, Thanalan, La Nosca, Coerthas) to again say that it does happen out there. Might not see it every time that I run through and might not be huge groups (packs of 2-4 RPers seem to be the norm) but they're absolutely out there. Mor Dhona... honestly, I can see why it doesn't happen there a lot: so much filtering and temp-blacklisting in Revenant's Toll to not get an overwhelmed chatlog, and OMGlaaaaag and lots of moments of "dude, this thing is chewing on me..." in the rest of the zone. Not saying that it can't be done, but if you're not in the mood for combat in your RP, then it's a definite mood-killer. Quicksands and Ul'dah have the benefits of having more seating (tables, spots outside, etc), and already strongly 'claimed' as RP-territory. It's easier (and, in a way, safer) for newcomers to find/be introduced to RP there, and sometimes people just don't move away from it. Personally, I just love Thanalan so most of my RP has happened out that way. As someone who just spent the last three years doing nothing -but- traveling... there is much to be said about having that little comfortable niche and coming up with reasons to -not- go somewhere. Just because I have the means to go to Chicago, doesn't mean I'm going to go gallivanting halfway across the country to Chicago when I know I'll have just as much fun going four hours to New York City. (IRL, I wouldn't even go to NYC... I'd just go forty-five minutes to Boston and have even more fun because I know where things are)
  24. *wails* Bluuuuue..! Whyyyyyy did you have to revive thiiiiiis?! Kara-puppy:
  25. There's a lore-driven timeline on the wiki that is, more or less, up to date to the launch of ARR. It really should be updated with the MSQ through 2.2, but then, a lot of things on the wiki need updates and reorganization. That said, the site won't be giving any stamp of approval to any player-created "stuff," whether that's an event, timeline, or interpretation of lore. We're a community site with a set of tools, not the Regulators of RP. I definitely don't want people to feel that the RPers on the RPC are trying to tell anyone else how they can or must RP; what player-created events, lore, and characters they must recognize and accept to be part of the "community;" etc. I don't like it when people try to do that to me (*cough* SWTOR Player-Run Planet Initiative *cough* Jedi Council RP *cough*), and so I wouldn't want to subject anyone else to that. That said, if that's not what you were getting at, I apologize if the above came off harshly. I'm just always wary of attempts to "build community" through shared continuity that doesn't come from the devs. Aah, gotcha. And, nah, it wasn't harsh. Different communities work in different ways, and different games have different styles that lend better or worse to the idea. Which is why I asked.
