Character questions: Psychology edition
Jariana replied to LadyRochester's topic in Character Workshop
I've always been meaning to give one of these little questionnaires a go. 1: What’s your OC’s biggest insecurity and how would they react if someone pointed it out to them? 2: If your OC wants to buy a firearm, what it might be for? She wouldn't. Her aim is terrible with a bow, and she'd expect a gun to be much worse. Now, if there was a sword she wanted to add to her collection that's a different story... 3: Does your OC behave differently around different people, if so with whom and how? 4: Would your OC want to involve themselves in humanitarian work ? If yes, then for what? If not, then why not? Yes, constantly and for just about anything. She has a soft spot for orphans of the Calamity, but regularly does jobs pro bono, or for a mug of ale. 5: How would your OC generally react to someone being verbally abusive towards them for no apparent reason? With a snarky response. 6: Does your OC have a realistic image of their own intelligence? Yes, in that despite some training, she knows she has massive gaps in her education. 7: Does your OC have any irrational phobias? She has normal fears and worries, but nothing that would count as a phobia. 8: How is/was your OC’s relationship with their parents? Definitely a love/hate type of situation. 9: Does your OC feel a pressure to achieve or are they content and calm with doing what they can at the moment? Jari is content with what she does, even if she feels it will never make a difference in the end. 10: Does your OC guard their emotions by being tough? If not how would they? She'd guard her emotions either by sarcasm or by deflecting the conversation to other topics. 11: How would your OC react to hearing they’re adopted? By laughing and praising the Twelve. 12: What is one of the most primary things your OC feels that is missing from their life? 13: What kind of situations does your OC avoid the most? Where her emotions conflict with her oaths (which is where I throw her on a regular basis, because I'm mean. ) 14: If your OC gets into a fight with their best friend, would they wait for their friend to make up with them, or would they try to make up with their friend? 15: Does your OC consider themselves a good person? Despite her little hedonistic ways, she does. 16: Is your OC good at giving others validation of their feelings and making them feel understood? She definitely tries, with varying degrees of success. Some people she just has trouble understanding. 17: Does your OC suffer of any mental health issues? She suffers from phantom pains in her hand from a severe, but now completely healed, injury. 18: What kind of intrapersonal values does your OC have? (values about their self, what makes them feel like a valid person) Despite feeling that in the end it makes no difference, Jari finds validation in doing what is right. 19: What boosts your OC’s confidence the most? 20: Does your OC hurt others often unintentionally? If yes, how? 21: Does your OC hurt others often intentionally? If yes, how? 22: How does your OC usually show affection? Are they openly romantic or more restricted with their affectionate emotions? She is open to a point. Her fear of hurting those who are close to her though, keeps her rather guarded. 23: Does your OC tend to hide something about their personality/essence when meeting new people? If yes, what? Jari is rather blunt about who she is, though she doesn't necessarily bring up her upbringing at first meeting. 24: How would your OC react if they got humiliated by someone in a group of people? It depends. Socially, she'd smirk and take another drink. On the job, she'd put her foot down, as it's divisive and doesn't help the task at hand. 25: How would your OC process the grief caused by the death of a loved one? 26: What is the most intense thing your OC has been battling with? 27: Does your OC practise any kind of escapism? If yes, what kind? Definitely. She loves to drink and looks for *ahem* paid company. On the slightly more cerebral side, she adores children's stories. 28: How would your OC react if a bully stole their lunch money in high school? 29: How does your OC behave on the face of a conflict? With a prayer to the Twelve and a smirk on her face. 30: What makes your OC defensive quickest? Calling into question her oaths, especially in relation to her extracurricular activities. -
I would think that it may make more sense to use 'coeurl' rather than Miqo'te. Especially since you have the hard 'c' there so you still get the fun alliteration of things like 'Curiosity killed the coeurl.'

Compliments Galore! Compliment The Poster Above You!
Jariana replied to Y'lani's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I have always enjoyed reading Melodia's in character posts here on the RPC. She has quite the style that I just find intriguing. -
Jariana strode brusquely along the dusty stones of the Emerald Avenue, her tail twitching angrily. "Godsdamned pompous ass of a client!" she muttered under her breath. "Demanding to see me in full armor in this Twelve-cursed sun and then turning me away because I'm too Godsdamned short!" The well armed, but diminutive Miqo'te growled as she turned onto the Ruby Road. As she marched toward the airship landing lift she continued her rant, "But it was 'urgent' they said. A matter of 'life and death'. Halone's icy tits! Over-privileged, soul-sucking, f..." The Keeper paused as her plated foot came down on a scrap of parchment that had been fluttering about on the road. She tilted her head as she peered down at it, the irritation in her face melting into a wide smirking grin. "Twelve be good! Is that who I think it is?" Kneeling down to pick up the scrap, Jari burst into loud laughter, drawing the stares of some nearby passersby. "V'aleera Lhuil... That is definitely a side of you I never expected to see. Not that I'm complaining..."

That could definitely be debated, as from what I understand the Allagan rise and fall seems to be in the Third Era, while the Miqo'te migration happened in the Fifth. Which honestly lends some credence to the Allagan creation idea, being that they may have been placed in Meracydia during the invasion. Personally I'm curious if it could be taken a step further and speculated that the general diversity in the "races of man" is due entirely to Allagan meddling. I can't find much evidence for it, but it's a niggling idea that's been stuck in the back of my head for a while now.

One example I don't think has been mentioned yet, is I believe that in Satasha normal all of the non-combatants there are possibly slaves, or at least captive to the pirates there. I seem to remember a back room (that isn't hit often in a normal run) with a bunch of people in cages and such. Though I could be getting things mixed up, it's been ages since I've run that place.

I can definitely understand feeling anxious about running dungeons, especially when they are new and the mechanics are a bit fuzzy. Admittedly my counter to that is to over prepare both in and out of game. I'll look up every mechanic, watch multiple videos and even annoy various friends for pointers. In game I'm a huge fan of trying to overgear content, even when leveling. I figure that as a tank I'm a bit of a lynchpin, so making sure that pin is as strong as possible is helpful. [spoiler=As a bit of an off-topic response to the off-topic ranting... ]

Best I can give is what is in the early access notes: Given that the download doesn't seem to have started already on PC, I would guess that it will become available like other patches when the servers go down for maintenance at 2 AM PDT on Jun 18. Admittedly I haven't seen anything to confirm that one way or another, and the notes above are from June 5th, so things may have changed. But it does seem to fit the pattern.
-
Nah I tried to download it right off the bat so nobody would guess my code and get it (yes im that paranoid with codes) and time I tried to play xiv it had error messages until I deleted it. I wasn't aware it was even available to download. It's certainly not on the launcher, which is what I was talking about. If you can download it on the launcher, it should be 100% safe and just won't be "on" until they flip the switch at headquarters. Where exactly did you download it? We're probably talking about PS4 V PC. When I entered the bonus code for the early access, and after it downloaded I couldn't get on xiv without a big red lettered error message on the sign in page until I deleted it. Im not sure how it works on PC Apparently there was an issue with the PS4/PS3 versions of the game where if you entered in your Heavensward code, it would download the patch data and cause the game to stop working (mentioned here on the Lodestone.) It didn't effect PC players. As for the patch itself, I would expect it to become available during the 24 hour maintenance they're putting up right before early access, since that seems to fit how they've done all of the recent patches as well.

I've sent some details across by PM, please let me know if there is anything else that you would need. Thank you!

Admittedly this may have very little to do with the discussion on Eorzean firearms, but in history, this change wasn't immediate in any sense. Plate armor and firearms coexisted on the battlefield for quite some time, several centuries in fact. As firearms progressed, the response wasn't an immediate disposal of armor, but rather refinements and improvements to the metallurgy so they could withstand various types of firepower. One of my favorite examples of this is explained in Wikipedia here: The article goes on to point out that full plate armor was used by commanders and such all the way up to the early 1700's. Now of course the firearm eventually won out, but in no way was it an immediate or even quick change.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Jariana replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
That's been there since day 1 of LotA, and is usually worth a laugh. "Ha, someone hit the teleporter again, chat spam incoming." I can understand how it can be aggravating for those who rely on chat, though. VoIP makes everything better. :> My favorite variation on this is the one I had in a WoD run last night. Someone died in the middle of the first trash pull, decided to res back at the entrance, and then started spamming the dumb thing for the entirety of the fight. Of course this was after the self-appointed MT decided to try to tank all three of the mobs in that stupid middle "safe spot", got hit with all the breath attacks, and stood in the fire. He dropped impressively fast, though part of me really wonders if the healers just decided to let him go. Me and the other OT were able to salvage it, but it kinda set the tone for the entire run. :frustrated: Of course, we're not going to mention the little incident where I may have accidentally tanked Ms. Cloudy at the end with Sword Oath on. Nope, not going to mention that at all... -
Syldra's Revenge - For Those About To ROCK! IC Primal Fight - Titan

I'd be happy to come along if there is room for a tank by any chance. Unfortunately I've been too lazy to level anything else... -
Name: Jariana "Jari" Rinjahl World: Balmung Character main class/job/role: Miqote-at-Arms (Paladin) Cards: The Star, Temperance, The Hermit Reason for Card choice: The Star: For the upright, Jari is sworn to the Twelve, bound by oath to their defense and to that of their people. She is surprisingly very much a peace with her faith (or at least the little niche she's carved out for herself there.) That peace gives her a sense of fulfillment and courage to move forward and rather selflessly serve where she can. For the case of the reverse, despite her belief in the Twelve, she does not believe her acts will truly have a lasting effect, and in the end she will die in her service. She is very much a pessimist when it comes to bringing about any lasting good, as it seems when one wrong is remedied hundreds more crop up to take its place. Temperance: The reverse of this is easier to start with. Jari loves to drink, can be quite divisive in her attitude at times, and very much enjoys the... ahem... "company" of others (paid and otherwise.) However, in the upright of this card, she strictly limits her drinking to never impair her judgement, is very selfless in her actions, and always treats and looks at her partners as actual beings, not something to be used and cast off. In the end she merges the hedonistic and temperate parts of herself. The Hermit: In the upright Jari is an introspective individual, her past having forced her to come to terms with her faith, something she still considers and studies regularly. In the reverse, while she's not a particularly private individual, she does not let others get particularly close. She refuses to have any relationships deeper than just friendship and almost forcibly bars anyone attempting to push any further than that. "Ugh I need to update my character's Wiki"
Jariana replied to Berrod Armstrong's topic in RP Discussion
Just as a fun little sidenote to this, there seems to be other options for Citizenship other than the three starter cities that have color schemes and graphics associated with them. I can't find a good way to list them out (other than going here and picking through the ones that seem valid) but if you're playing something like an Ishgardian, Ala Mhigan, or Sharlayan those work as well. No Doma (Domian?) for Chachanji though... -
Like some of the others mentioned, I'll use the ellipsis to indicate the thought just kind of trails off. But on top of that, I'll use it in the middle of a sentence to give the feeling of a change in direction or thought. For example, in a previous game I had a character where the common language wasn't her first. So often she would get lost in the middle of a sentence, searching for a word, and the ellipsis came in handy in portraying that. Something like, "Your idea is... oh, how do you say it? ...ah yes, it is crazy." Admittedly that may not be the 'proper' usage, but it seems to help get that feeling across. As for responding to an ellipsis, I'm of the feeling that, unless someone has given me an indication that they're continuing a long thought, once something is out there I can respond to it. Just like in spoken conversations, people sometimes interject whenever an opportunity appears, even if the original speaker doesn't feel like they are done yet.

[Balmung] Carrion Underfoot (Updated 1/22/15)
Jariana replied to Melkire's topic in Chronicled Events
If room for one more is still around, I'd like to sign Jari up for this as well. I've been meaning to expand my RP circle a bit, and this seems like a good way to go about it. Thanks! -
I would like to participate in the Giveaway as well. Thank you!
-
I'd also be interested in a full line/full color one for gil as well please. I'll send you a PM a smidge later (when I can escape from work) with the full information. Thank you!
-
*raises hand* If you could add Jariana there as well I would appreciate it. Thank you!
-
Definitely interested in joining if you still have room. I'll see if I can't catch one of you in game later on. Hope to see you soon!

The discussion on this is rather interesting, and I figured I'd throw my two gil in on something. My thought on this (while not necessarily cannon) it definitely could make for some very interesting RP. From what I saw in the main ARR questline there, an Inquisitor is a highly respected (and public) office inside of the political structure of Ishgard. Nobles have to pay heed to them and are subject to their rulings. The entire 'burn the witch' mentality, and the fact that they are somewhat above the law of the general rabble does put them in an interesting niche. But I would imagine that the position of Inquisitor could restrict the individual quite a bit. It's not like they would necessarily be able to infiltrate a group of heretics all that well, especially if they were well known. So having some 'half-breed' about that can do some of the 'dirty' work could make a lot of sense for someone in that position. What could an interesting twist on that would be if her boss had no respect for her because of her parentage. She's just a tool to him in the fight against the heretics. And if the heretics were suddenly more welcoming to her it could present some fun moral dilemmas for the character. Of course NONE of that is written out in the lore as far as I know. But considering how most Ishgardian's treat outsiders, and their fascination with purity (Peridot Choker leve, I'm looking at you), I don't see it as much of a stretch. Ah alignment... the subject that has launched a thousand internet wars. This one is always a bit touchy, but all I want to say is if you wish to use an alignment, and for some that's a very big IF, I would argue that Lawful Good isn't necessarily a requirement. The Lawful side of it does makes sense, you are executing the law of the Holy See after all. But the Good side is definitely flexible. In fact, I would argue that Ishgard itself has a very Lawful Neutral to the infamous Lawful Stupid vibe to it. Despite the name, that's not a bad thing though, it just presents a very lopsided worldview in some ways. Of course that may just be because Ishgard is at war, but war can bring people do some really frightening things, all for the 'greater' good. Regardless, it seems like you've got a rather interesting character concept on your hands there, and I'm more than a bit curious as to where you'll take her. I've no idea what your game times are, but if you ever would like to chat or RP, and are on sometime in the Pacific timezone evenings, feel free to look up Jariana. Hope to see you around!

While historically this is very very true, and is one of the primary reasons that even early guns rather quickly made heavy late Middle Ages armor obsolete, I'm not certain if plays out in the game itself. It seems that guns are an area in the game where the writers have swapped out the 'Laws of Physics' with the 'Rule of Cool'. Case in point is the final test in the Armorer's questline. If guns are as lethal as they are in the real world, Merlwyb's method of testing a pair of chain armors is certifiably insane. Regardless of any mystical properties of the cobalt the haubergeons are made of, the sheer concussive force of blasting a pair of soldiers at close range like that would have likely caused more trauma than just one of them being 'slightly' wounded. Of course there are a slew of possible explanations for this, each that doesn't necessarily keep firearms from being much different from their real world counterparts (cobalt really is that strong, Roegadyn can simply take more punishment than humans can, some aetheric combination of the shards the armor was crafted with makes them deflect bullets, Merlwyb is secretly a terrible shot and only hit one of them, etc.) Regardless, it makes for a very entertaining scene and tells a fun story. Which is the important part of all of this. EDIT: And of course Otto beat me to it...

Gotta love K-Pop! This has been stuck in my head for the past couple of days, so in the same vein... (well not really, but it's from a Korean Drama, so that counts right?)
