Your Character's Story Role In a Final Fantasy Game
Marisa replied to Sylentmana's topic in Fun Prompts
Okay, so imagine you've got this random NPC who thinks she's the main character. You come across her in town, sometimes out in the field, and she's always doing something ranging between slightly off, to downright stupid. She regards you as a colleague, despite the fact that she's accomplished nothing and you're the goddamn warrior of light. But whatever, you don't have time for this silliness. So you carve your way through some hellish dungeon, and defeat the big ol' dragon at the end. As you're standing over its bloody corpse, admiring your work, Marisa hops across the room behind you, picks up some object of no measurable value, and starts singing the victory fanfare to herself. "Buh-buh-buh-bah dah-dum doo-do-doo!" she proclaims, holding whatever trash she's found above her head for all to see. She hops away with her prize, quite possibly not even noticing you or the behemoth you've just slain. This will happen in every. single. dungeon. She won't show up after the final boss because, y'know, don't wanna kill the mood, but if you watch to the end of the credits, there's a hidden cutscene where she finds the Ancient Relic of Infinite Power that you stopped the bad guy from using, and proceeds to wear it as a hat. -
If it makes you feel any better, I was listening to Jag Panzer on my way to work today. And then this on the way home. I've got folk metal going over lunch, too. EREBOR! EREBOR! YOU WILL SOON AWAIT NO MORE! N865ItPtRt0

What your character thinks/would think of the character above.

Sasha: She's really pretty, and super smart! She doesn't know where any good treasure is, though. I don't see what's so interesting about all those books if they don't even have cool maps or anything. ...or maybe, she does know about treasure and SHE'S KEEPING IT A SECRET SO SHE CAN FIND IT HERSELF AND -
I really want the female #9, but it's not looking like it's gonna happen. Also, this is nearly the worst voting system they could have used.

I used to IC claim that Marisa wasn't a miqo'te. I mean, she very obviously is, she's just oblivious to the fact. Most folks would take this as me trying to RP as something other than my in-game character, when really it was just IC delusion. Anyway, my point is, if you're known as a serious RPer, wild and fantastical bullshit will usually be interpreted as just that. It's minor and mild bullshit where you have to go out of your way to be like "OOC: I'm lying right now" or "My character is just really dumb"

Whenever these things come up and I don't have a good answer, I like to just throw out some wild speculation. That way it's viewed as a joke if I'm wrong, but I'll be seen as a powerful wizard on the off chance that I'm right. 4.0 will not raise the level cap, and will not be a linear progression like 2.x->3.x. Instead, it will be another level 60 expansion which will take place semi-simultaneously (as far as the in-universe timeline) with the Dragonsong War, in a different part of the world. The reason for this is that Yoshida has decided to go ahead with his idea of overhauling the battle system. This could just be general class reworks (like WoW used to do when they were modernizing their old classes), or something that changes everything, on the magnitude of when they added jobs back 1.something. Yoshida did mention the idea of building a class system where you choose abilities as you level, which in turn determines your job. We may see that. So why does this require us to stay at level 60? Well, overhauling the entire combat/class system while still producing new content simultaneously will certainly take more time than they're willing to wait to push a new expansion, given that they're aiming for yearly releases and a 3 month patch cycle. Where this gets tricky is that if they up the level cap to 70, as they would logically do, it delays their overhaul even further. Another 10 levels means a shitload more time they have to spend adding new abilities to the current system, and balancing those abilities. Additionally, they have to factor 10 more levels into their overhaul. If they keep the cap at 60, they just have to get the current balance stabilized and never touch it again. Then they can focus 100% of their efforts on the new system. It is worth mentioning that Yoshida said there would probably more jobs for 4.0. However, I see these being pretty half-assed when released, something like 'generic tank/dps/healer with a different weapon and 1 original mechanic'. Of course, overhaul rolls around, and we finally see what those jobs were meant to be. Now, assuming all of the above is true, SE would be wise to release this update 1 patch before 5.0, or more. Basically, throw it out during one of the casual 24-man patches, so everybody has time to figure things out before the next hardcore raid hits. Frankly, I thought they should have done this with the Ninja release, but they didn't manage to finish it until FCoB came out.

"Witty" characters, can they be roleplayed by the dumb?
Marisa replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
I can't quite place who it was, but I knew a blacksmith RPer who once came at me with something like this. Dudeman McGuydude delivers a long-winded explanation of the processes and intricacies involved in forging a proper steel blade. To which I replied Marisa Stormsong fails to comprehend any of it, but seems happy to nod and clap occasionally. Basically, you can pretty easily RP beyond your own knowledge just by having somewhat of an understanding of what you're talking about, using google, and falling back on "I explain this to you in a way that sounds smart" every now and then. Most people will just accept it. -
Frankly, I prefer Warcraft's canon where you have to be a Kirin Tor or equivalent skill wizard to teleport even a little bit, with long-distance teleports requiring a team of wizards performing a complex ritual (or a single Archmagus (or Ronin, who does whatever the fuck he wants)). Having teleportation readily available to anyone just because they're an "adventurer" makes the world seem very small to me. "I have traveled many moons to find this particular inn!" "Really? Because most folk just come through the big blue rock in a couple seconds." And I get that realistically, most people using teleportation should be limited by their anima supply. But you're still going to teleport everywhere. Because what's more efficient, taking a couple-hour nap after a teleport, or spending a week walking there?

This is also my entire opinion on the whole thing. Why does combat realism matter in a fantasy setting? Because it has more impact than laser-light rock concerts claiming to be battles. And even with the presence of magic, realism doesn't change. We can know exactly how a fireball spell would be used in the real world, because it doesn't really alter the fundamentals of combat. With a bit of research and a good amount of rational thought, you absolutely can make believable use of Holy. So if you're just out for a good ol' dick-waving contest, superhero fights are fine and dandy. But they don't make for a compelling story, so much as they end up being "who would win in a fight, the guy who shoots lasers out of his eyes or the guy who breathes mustard gas?"

Have most people been swept up into their FC RP?
Marisa replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
My couple of go-to RP buddies have mysteriously vanished without a trace, so I'm also struggling to find anyone to put up with my nonsense these days. Honestly I find myself wondering how people even get in to these really close-knit RP communities in the first place. I'm going close to a year now on Balmung and I've got basically nothing going on RP-wise right now. -
I wish I could say Marisa would be a metal-head, but in reality she'd probably like some K-Pop nonsense. She'll always be a Heavy Metal Pirate in my heart, though.

The tavern in Coerthas Central Highlands is my favorite. Not sure if it even has a name.

What future game releases are you most looking forward to?

3 pages and not one mention of Total War: Warhammer? Heretics! epK0ouN0l7U -
Especially with how the map is laid out, and from what we can see beyond the loading screen lines, I definitely believe there are often lands between the zones. Personally, I really hope some of those get filled in some day. Though I doubt it will happen :I In fact, the unseen areas are probably pretty substantial. They may hide entire towns. After all, what we can see of each city-state is pretty sparse. One city and ~3 villages does not make a nation.

Attractive or not, if you don't have a beard, you dishonor your viking ancestors. Unless you don't have viking ancestors, then it's whatever.
-
You know, this all has got me thinking... there are basically no beards in XIV. You literally cannot have husbando-status men without beards. How have we gone this long with this blatant oversight in manliness?

"Well, might as well throw in a screenshot!" -2 Hours Later- "Wow, photoshop just kinda... devours time..."

Oh my, apparently I'm the only person who absolutely despised Iceheart (and thought she was very plain looking) Aymeric, Estinien, and Haurchefant are all man-crush status, though.

Really hoping for a long, very messy ponytail. The current options are far too clean and proper for my character, and I'm getting tired of forever using the Lightning hair Or better yet, just let me have that ponytail that Au Ra men get

Racist characters are interesting - especially if they have a good reason to be the way that they are. A soldier who fought against the Garlean invaders and lost his comrades during the Battle of Carteanau is very likely to distrust anyone and anything related to the Garlean Empire. So when that soldier meets a Garlean who happens to be reasonable and morally pure...there's a good deal of room for interesting conflict in my opinion. But it's not just about creating conflict; its about making conflict that is compelling and believable. The thing with racism and prejudice in Eorzea is that as far as the general population goes, creating a character who is racist for reasons that aren't arbitrary is rather difficult because the setting emphasizes a mingling of cultures and a certain open-mindedness that comes from being constantly exposed to different races and customs. An Ishgardian might be racist to Au Ra. A Gridanian might be racist to Keepers and Duskwight. Eorzeans in general will be heavily prejudiced against Garleans. Eorzeans might also discriminate against Ala Mhigans, particularly Gridanians and Ul'dahns. Ala Mhigans might be particularly distasteful of Ul'dah. When you get outside of the realm of ethnic and social conflicts--of which Eorzea does not have very many with the notable exceptions above--a character's reasons for being a racist very quickly boils down into an amalgam of Freudian excuses and anecdotes, which are often as easy to dismiss in RP as they are in real life. I'm not against racism and conflict in RP. I am very much against those things being arbitrary, poorly defined, or difficult to justify. As someone who is, admittedly, a little bit racist in the real world, I can assure you that most prejudices are arbitrary. Example, why do I think more favorably about Chinese immigrants than Japanese immigrants? Because the one Japanese guy I know is a jackass, and the couple Chinese people I know are super nice. I based my entire perception of those races off those few people because that's just how the human mind works. So yeah, if the first Au Ra I ever met rubbed me the wrong way, I'd subconsciously start to dislike all of them until somebody changed my mind otherwise.
