I'd say the terrain was a much bigger deal than the strategic value of the land. A mounted archer (or cavalry in general) tends to be useless on anything but on open field. I'm kinda butting in on an area where I lack authority (Asian history isn't really my strong point), but I feel like the Mongols tend to get a bit more hyped up than they deserve. They conquered a massive area full of... basically nothing. Lots of little farming villages with no military ambition whatsoever. Largest empire by land area? Sure, but it was just a never-ending stretch of nothing. Kind of like if Oklahoma was an empire. They did a number on the Arabs and Eastern Europe, but I personally attribute that to the fact that the Byzantines and the Caliphates had been beating the shit out of each other on and off for centuries. The Crusades had ravaged the Gulf over and over and the Arabs had focused all of their defenses on stopping attacks from the West. Any Arab general at the time would have looked East and said "There is NOTHING over there. There is literally no point to fortifying this." How I see it, the Mongols basically made the biggest surprise attack in human history, because nobody knew they even existed until they were banging down your door.

Since we're doing MS paint pictures... This was technically done in photoshop, but it's about the same level of quality. I had originally intended to do Ryoko's entire wiki as a series of IC drawings, and I managed to do a handful of them before I realized it wasn't a great idea. Probably for the best, though. Would you believe these are actually kinda hard for me to make? I'm terrible at drawing with a mouse, so each picture was taking me over half an hour. The characters are Ryoko on the left, and Mishka to the right.

Can you tell us more about this Miqo'te whitewashing? I have about 3 theories as to what that might mean, and I'm pretty sure I'm guilty of at least one of them...

I'm wondering how many people have avoided me because of my character's name... I know Orrin Halgren was a bit confused by my entire deal the other night. Okay, I need to fanboy for a moment. I've yet to see anyone dig as deep into the lore of XIV as this guy, and he's been a great resource for me personally, in a game which doesn't have a lot of great lore resources. He does history, etymology, theology, and even covers physics and science within Eorzea. His most popular videos seem to be his dungeon runs where he explains the lore of the dungeons as he goes through them. If you haven't, you should definitely check out a few videos. RG7TqsLK_jE I'm hoping I can convince him to bring back 20 Malms to Ayatlan, which was his series where he made his own speculations about various things in XIV, mostly things about Heavensward.

I'm gonna bounce an idea off y'all. I think we could use an Ishgard master-thread in the RP Discussion forum. Somewhere we could do basically what we do in the linkshell, but for when we're not in-game. It'd be a place where we could discuss lore, speculation, character plots, and anything Ishgard-related. It would also increase our visibility for people who aren't in the linkshell. I don't know about y'all, but these days I'm on the RPC more often than I'm in-game, and when I am in-game I'm usually farming or doing something that makes it hard to have meaningful discussion in the LS. And frankly, I'm a little jealous that there's a dozen threads about Ul'dah constantly going, yet we're usually silent on the boards. Thoughts?

Of course, now that I'm thinking that out loud, it occurs to me that hand-written copies of the Christian Bible tend to be heavily illustrated, so I guess it would only make sense.

Maybe I'm just missing the point here, but... People understand you can just RP as a swordsman, right? Like... you could just be a Knight, and not a... Dark... Knight?
