Questions about Dark Knight and Darkside's nature.
Virella replied to Kallera's topic in Lore Discussion
You're taking it a little too far in the regard that there's the capability out there. Saying that there -must- have been Dark Knights (named or otherwise) out there before Ishgard simply because of tyranny and the like is ridiculous. Not to mention the lore book goes into detail about the Dark Arts being something that was picked up on much later than the first Dark Knights beginning their long, perilous duty of service. My post about adapting the teachings and mentality of the Dark Knight to other cultures and sort of threading the line is just that: adaption and the like. You shouldn't make up lore to suit your character. R'khan, for example, adapted what he learned of Dark Knights to that of what he knows of Ul'dah, beginning his own service in that regard and even beyond that: to Eorzea as a whole. But yeah, you should definitely stay away from spitting your own thoughts, scribblings, and the like as true blue lore. Actually, I'm pretty sure that nothing I said about that being a possibility due to the factors of injustice, political unrest and people having access to learn about dark arts prior to Ishgard was untrue. I think you're misinterpreting me here. That's NOT the same as making up lore. There is a difference between using reasoning FROM THE LORE to justify/explain why your character has a tie to something--which you did, yourself. The lore doesn't provide direct examples of what YOUR character did, or what many other people's characters did. You make a character and try to fit the storyline somewhere within the lore boundaries. Just because something isn't 100% proven in stone doesn't mean it isn't, or couldn't be, canon--given how SE actually gives us a lot of room to wonder and fill in the blanks. You also said earlier on in this thread that we aren't sure WHERE dark knights originally came from--and I'm saying that the materials and conditions for a dark knight to function and exist in some form were very much around before Ishgard was. The "true blue" lore tells us that there was suffering, access to the dark arts, and that people were victimized by severe injustice and villainy in other places pre-ishgard. I am allowed to speculate, too--and so is everybody else, especially when I bother to research and justify my claims--which are TOTALLY based on the lore here. I'm not saying YEAH THAT WAS TOTALLY THE CASE, no questions asked....I'm saying it definitely seems likely, and here's a bunch of reasons why. This is part of RP and how people make characters. I fail to see how that's ridiculous. Furthermore, I am NOT the only one in this thread to have suggested that it could've happened in other places and at other times. I think I've actually re-iterated what other have said and provided why my character personally has a tie to the concept of dark knights too. The thing is, it is confirmed in lore, so there is no speculation left. Might just be me, but people speculate about the grey areas, or things we don't know. But I might just be wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There's confirmed lore saying that it didn't or couldn't possibly have happened anywhere else in some form, started in Ishgard, that's it, no debate? Because that's not what I'm seeing said in the rest of this thread though. You don't see Gridanian Ninjas, or Doman Dragoons. Their fighting styles, cultures, religion ect is a very specific things, bound to a history to a specific area. Dark Knight is sadly enough one of those jobs as well. Surely you can speculate on it, but it just as absurd of... for example, Buddhist Monks out of random just popping up in Medieval Europe, without said Buddhist Monks travelling there. Or Western Knights suddenly, with all their rules, believes and habits suddenly out of nowhere popping up in Australia. Lots of the jobs in FFXIV have a specific background to them, and that to me is the beauty of this setting. It isn't a mix match, it is very diverse in cultures, religion ect. All cities, races have their own background, and thus specific fighting styles were created from a certain need, religion or culture. Because why would Limsa need Dragoons for example? They really don't. It is really just the Ishgardians who needed them! Surely, there is evil and oppression everywhere, but it is explicate stated it was a counter measure against the Halonic Church corrupt religious priests. Effect and cause. Take that out of account, and you have a very wonky character in my opinion. You have no base any more for them, and merely the skillset, thus once more, in my opinion, kinda just... ignoring the rich background we have for jobs like that. Use the lore, try to fit your character in, like make them have travelled to Ishgard, got invested with the plight of the people, make them hate the corrupt individuals of the Halonic Church, let them become a Dark Knight. Once more, there's working with the lore, and simply plucking the skillset from said jobs without wanting to make the 'sacrifice' to fit your character in it because you don't happen to like it. And I happen to be one of those roleplayers who simply won't roleplay it instead of breaking it. Because in my opinion, if your character's background doesn't fit with the canon? I see that as lore breaking. But that is once more, my opinion. Anyhow, people should roleplay what they want, and each to their own -

And the sad part is? The devs have a tool to change the day/night cycle around them ;_; if not the weather. I'd be totally fine with having something like that as well. Even if it was just a client based tweak. But eh. We ain't getting that. But yeah, I just... ignore the night/day cycle, really. Best you can do. Or just roleplay inside.

balmung Looking for nobles across all city states!
Virella replied to Siwonshi's topic in Chronicled Connections
That said though, I do have an immensely rich Alchemist/Trader character who you could RP with! However, I'm only her by request so to speak. I technically have her older brother as well, but he takes little interest in the family business, so it is her you will have to deal with! Her name is Lyanna Farborough, but I'm /mostly/ to be found on Avelyn Firestone. Just poke me ingame, and I'm sure we can figure something out -

Wasn't the Succubus boss of HK manor a noble? She wasn't Gridanian? -
Currently listening to this, thanks to this thread. Agreed that it's pretty entertaining, although there hasn't been very many episodes yet. I'm currently on episode two, and I don't know if it improves, but there's a lot of dead air on occasion, which implies that the hosts don't really have a script, and often just fall silent when they run out of things to say. It's one of those things which can absolutely be corrected with practice, so I don't begrudge them that. Anyway, what prompted me to comment here is something from their first episode; namely the idea of the "muse" and "mun". Is this something that's widespread in the FF14 RP community? I admit I've never heard of this, but it does make sense in that there has to be some way of signifying the separation between character and player, and "muse"/"mun" is as good a method as any I've seen elsewhere. In truth, I think most RPers find muse and mun dumb. It is just a Tumblr thing mostly, so don't worry too much about it. Muse and mun is in my eyes often used by people who cross the line with IC and OOC a bit too much. My roleplay characters is far from my inspiration, a tool, not a person. She's just my roleplay character. I'd also not degrade myself or others to be 'mundane', because real people are not boring :^) But each to their own. Most people don't use it in game though, I've only strictly seen it used on Tumblr.

Little Ala Mhigo Roleplay Evening - Friday, November 18 - 7:00 PM EST

Starting in about ~1 hour! -
Understandable! Yet I'd stay, with us as players knowing very little about any region outside of Eorzea, why not just go for a very sheltered life within her tribe? It gives you a reason to be not familiar with Eorzean etiquettes either, and hey, its fun to make up your own tribal habits! Also to answer your question about ageing. All the races age at the same rate, except for Elezen who stay children/teenagers a wee bit longer. They also live a little bit longer in general. Not like other elves in other setting, but think 20+ years or so. But people in Eorzea make it rarely past... 50 if I recall. So your Miqo'te would just age 'normally' so to speak! If I may... I'd still suggest to consider to be from one of the city-states, or own tribe. Your Miqo'te can easily have grown up in one of the Eorzean cities! You don't even have to be from a tribe. Your character's parents could have easily taken a city life. Bit strange, but not unheard of for certain. But.. Coming from your grandma Ala Mhigan roleplayer; It is not always fun knowing lore little about your character's city. You can't answer things in depth. It is a pain if you want to go beyond what little snippets we have. There's only so much I can have Ave say about Gyr Abania/Ala Mhigo/Monk temples because I don't know the information myself. I'd really keep that possible roadblock in mind as well. But anyhow, your character, your choice, but you might shoot yourself in the foot by wishing to be from another part of the world beyond Eorzea. I get you, the lore of this game isn't as easily to be found as with others due to a lack of a Wiki, but I think you have a huge chance falling into the pit you're trying to avoid by taking this approach. Best of luck anyhow!

Oh! For the Mythril Blades, Scarlet Heath can be taken off, and instead Erioch Koren can be put in their place instead if you'd be so kind?
-
Thavnair might be an option for you as well! Eorzea still trades with it, so it isn't far fetched your character would have made their way from that place to Eorzea.

Little Ala Mhigo Roleplay Evening - Friday, November 18 - 7:00 PM EST

Tomorrow! -
Hmm... Do I think events can interfere with regular RP? Oh yeah. Everyone and his mother is running their events during the weekends, and there's a heap of roleplayers who only have time to RP during said weekends. Then well, heh, its a person choice whether you want to go to those events, or do a bit more personal roleplay? A lot of people simply enjoy going to events, and no one can fault them for it. I think its really just a matter of finding a (small) friendgroup with the same tastes in that regard, so you don't run into this problem. Well, besides that I can just offer you the typical advice of 'go find more people to roleplay with', but you've been around forever, so you know this. But yeah, I think it is just truly a matter of that. My friendgroup doesn't often attend events. One every so often? Yeah, they like that, and I'm of the same mind. But personally for me, between the Ala Mhigan LS events, Sea Breeze Bazaar and the odd Grindstone, I'm good really. But others just want to attend things all the time! What is perfectly fine. It just yeah, don't feel like doing that myself as I generally get little character development out of /most/ events. Anyhow... People's priority with roleplay is all over the place, I think it's a matter of finding people who share the same tastes in that regard. Also, I don't think you should stop asking people to roleplay on a whim. I harass my roleplay partners all the time for roleplay. I get to hear 'no, got no time right now, later maybe?' quite often as well. But I just move on to poke the next one who I spot online. Edit time: Yeah, I think Balmung is the first and only community I've seen who has more slice of life/tavern RP going on then anything else. I find it is terrible hard to find people to plot with and interest them in things beyond said 'casual' roleplay. It's the sole reason I like social roleplay to some degree, but not overly much. Well social roleplay? My main character on WoW, or one of them, never gone into battle for over the seven years or so I've had her. But we had a lot of politics going on, interguild roleplay, server events and that like. Balmung, somehow, doesn't have this.

Due to an influx of new members in both the Linkshell and Free Company, an In Character shift regarding the leadership of the Company, the Mythril Blades are closing recruitment for the time being. We want to prioritise getting our LS and FC members get properly involved with the Free Company's story before adding more. Also, we like to thank Scarlet Heath for the time with us as our main DM and our In Character Free Company leader. So where does that leave the rest of the Mythril Blades with them stepping down? Fear not! Odile Delacroix took over the reins as the Free Company leader, and Erioch Koren will step in as our new main DM. In any case, it won't be a thing what will take months to handle! But for the coming weeks, we won't be accepting new members to either the Linkshell or Free Company. Exceptions will be made for friends of Free Company (members) for the time being, but that is the only one we are willing to making. However that does not mean you aren't free to come roleplay with us or inquire about the Blades. We will be opening again once we feel our new members are settled in well enough. Thank you for your understanding! ~ The Mythril Blades officers

Sounsyy has a nice summary of that Miqo'te (or well the races) are known for! Not sure if they updated it with the lorebook info yet, but I'm sure it could help you out. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=12378&pid=196441#pid196441

Once more our thanks for showing up folks, even if this one wasn't so much an event as just a casual get together. But most of all I'd like to thank the people who did small things during the event: from handing out soup, to singing, to offering potions and what not, thank you! Hope to see you around next event, and that said...stay tuned for our next event in give or take 2 weeks.

Try starting of running events just as an LS, or a way to get people together? And maybe slowly make a FC after that? I've been doing it for the Resistance Linkshell as well, it has been quite a success! It is just a matter of promoting your event, and you will be good to go. I think seeing some more Gridanian based events would be awesome! I'd love to see them happening !

This is happening in a couple of hours. Just bring your friends, and start roleplaying there. Simple as that!

To add to the post above, from the lorebook. Highlanders/Ala Mhigans: Such ruggedness can also been seen in their preferred fare-Highlanders often dine on simple yet impressive dishes such as massive aldgoat steaks, seared perfectly to seal the natural juices. Overcooking is taboo in Highlander kitchens, to the degree that some consider them raw meat eaters. Also the ingame market board with the dishes on it is very handy for this. Ishgardian we know a ton of food of due to the expansion! That they for example boil their tea completely with milk instead of water ect. It's a bit too much to go all write this down but... This might help to find whatever you're looking for!
