  1. I don't really have firsthand experience with you or your character, so please keep that caveat in mind. That being said, while I'm less than eager to suggest that you kill him off (I don't like ganking my characters and not a lot of people that I know do either), I have to agree with Firefly on this one since she basically nailed it. Your character's interactions and developments have created a considerable degree of OOC conflict and resentment, and have also required officer intervention not once, but twice? To me, that's a pretty big indicator that he's worn out his welcome past the point of feasible repair. I understand your reluctance to go all GRRM on him (you've played him for a year and put in a lot of literary and personal investment), but speaking from an outside perspective, I don't think there are many options left if the situation has gotten to this point. tl;dr - You kinda gotta kill him, dude. Quietly, prosaically, and not in a way that might demand that he becomes the focus of attention, however temporarily. I'm glad that you've accepted that people are viewing him as a problem and that you're asking for help instead of just telling everyone with complaints to take a flying leap (it speaks to your maturity, because hoo boy have I known people who take the latter approach), but...you kinda gotta kill him, or at the very least permanently put him on a bus. Then start over. Keep the feedback you've gotten here and from your FC in mind, and I think you'll avoid the pitfalls that you say you've fallen into with Tahla'ra. Best of luck, whatever you end up deciding, and for what it's worth I'm sorry you're in this position.
  2. Yo, welcome. I also RP a dork when I'm not RPing a douchebag Highlander, and I'd be happy to throw either of them your way (I'm sure the folks I know who RP more intellectually-inclined characters would be on board as well hey Wyda get over here). Liliro's got you covered on the links front, but if you have any specific lore/community questions, feel free to hit me up whenever. also ayyyyyy fellow New Englander
  3. They asked about RP on Sargatanas. I commend your efforts to foster RP on Famfrit and wish you luck in that endeavor, but please stop posting recruitment spam in threads asking about RP communities on specific servers. To answer OP's question: unfortunately, Sarg on the whole seems pretty dead as a server. Whenever I've been on there, I've barely seen anyone at all, let alone anyone RPing.
  4. Job #1: I am half of the IT/web development department for a startup. I also handle marketing sometimes. Company is based in the city where I live. Job #2: Admin/HR for an IT outsourcing firm. I wrangle interns and also occasionally pretend to be an extra member of the management team when they need to look more professional. Company is based in Liverpool, so my schedule for them can get sort of weird sometimes thanks to the five-hour time difference. The joke is that I was an English major and had to teach myself everything on the job. It's not what I thought I'd end up doing with my life, but the hours are flexible and the pay's okay, so I'm alright with it even if job #1 has been a little bit crazy lately.
  5. Aurou basically hit it on the head as far as I'm concerned - if someone's a salty douchebag, I'd rather find out before they have the chance to cause drama.
  6. Basically what Ferus said - I'm just as appalled by his rotation as I am by the fact that he macroed literally everything.
  7. Yes hello fellow Ala Mhigan RPer, I like what I'm hearing and we should do things sometime maybe if you're down for it. I'm also totally fine with fielding gameplay/lore questions, fwiw.
  8. Uuuh. Not to start a completely OT discussion here, but my ex is from Leeds and he was in stitches over Raubahn's VA for it trying to sound like a 'random northern' accent. I agree, it's not Scottish, but it's also not something from up Yorkshire. It is just a voice actor trying to sound like a very generic northern British bloke and failing miserably at it according to a lot of UK/Scots/Irish folk Honestly... I wasn't impressed with the accent either. It's obviously a southerner's attempt, and his vowel shapes in particular fall short in most sentences, if not all. I think they think Yorkshire's an easy "northern" one for them to try because, like... Emmerdale is a thing. LOL. Other "northern England" accents aren't quite as popularised, I don't think. It makes it even harder to incorporate Raubahn (and Ilberd's) accents into clues about Highlander/Ala Mhigan society. Yeah, my dad's side of the family is from the UK (Merseyside, to be exact), and neither of us could figure out what the hell his accent was supposed to be, so we just had a laugh about it for a few minutes. It makes sense that they'd go for a generic 'northern' accent, but man, it's kinda hilarious. I met a guy once who insisted that Highlanders were Slavic. I am still not quite sure where he got that from.
  9. I keep running into cocky tanks who assume they can stay out of Grit/Defiance/Shield Oath because hurr durr, what could a monk in DF possibly do to threaten their tank epeen? They usually change their minds after one or two trash packs. Tl;dr - I feel your pain, my dude.
  10. Re: knowing what's right - Just try stuff and see what clicks. I'd never tanked anything before XIV, so I assumed that I'd hate PLD, but I ended up really enjoying the ability to get punched in the face repeatedly and not die (and also to control the pulling pace). So that's my secondary. MNK just fits with my usual playstyle - I've always preferred fast melee dps (Combat rogue in WoW, Marauder in SWTOR), so playing roughly the same role in XIV felt like a natural progression. Re: when you get a feel for your class - IMO that process starts early on, but as other people have said, you should probably have a good feel for it by 40-45ish in most cases (BRD changes significantly post-level 52, and there are others that play pretty differently after 50). Tl;dr - Try what you're interested in and above all, have fun with it.
  11. COME BACK, SOPHIA, WE LOVE YOU. (But seriously, it's nice to hear from you again, and if you do come back I know more than a few people who would be thrilled. )! I was just lurking around to get a feel for things around here, but I'm thrilled to see a lot of familiar names! My schedule opens up soon until early spring so I'll most likely be around some! Not many people have unsubbed in the last year, surprisingly (at least as far as I know). But at any rate, here's hoping I'll see you around - feel free to drop me a line if you do get ingame.
  12. COME BACK, SOPHIA, WE LOVE YOU. (But seriously, it's nice to hear from you again, and if you do come back I know more than a few people who would be thrilled. )
  13. This is so anime that Miyazaki is rolling in his grave (and he's not even dead yet). Jokes aside, Oli and Virella have basically summed up what I was going to say - there's no point in making your character's backstory As Cool As Possible if it never comes up or is accessible to others, and as far as I can tell there is no basis in established lore for anything you've posted here. Also that is a lot of equipment and I'm not sure how it pertains anything at all (and it probably weighs a ton, but that's neither here nor there). TL;DR - Play what you want, but be prepared for a lot of people having no desire to go Full Anime.
  14. I have you on my friends list but for the life of me I cannot remember why and it's driving me nuts (maybe you fantasia'd? I have no idea). Presumably we were gonna RP, so yes, I'd be down, haha.
  15. I think there's a difference between two people ICly seeing who can gank marmots faster and claiming that since you have Seph EX or whatever on farm, people should accept that your character is automatically better than theirs in combat IC. Not the best example, but you get what I'm saying.
  16. (Disclaimer: the assertions below are, of course, just my opinion, and I am perfectly aware of the fact that I'm being quite blunt.) I'm sort of in the same boat as Killeit in the sense that after RPing in WoW for ten years (Sentinels and then WrA), I am absolutely done with people insisting that OOC achievements affect RP. Someone has a server first kill on A8S? Congrats. They have my respect for their skill at PvE. (And I might also ask to talk rotations/optimization with them if they play monk.) They've created an engaging, well-written character that people enjoy interacting with? Congrats. They have my respect for their skill at writing and roleplaying. (And I might also ask to RP with them sometime.) But if someone starts being like, "Oh, my character is the Warrior of Light, and they've killed every Primal and a ton of Garleans and saved the world about a dozen times, and since I've cleared MSQ and have all the achievements and all the classes capped and all the content cleared, that automatically makes them inherently believable if they start asserting this IC," then I'm just gonna shake my head and walk away. In my opinion, cleared content does not automatically translate to a more realistic/believable/respectable character. If someone's claiming to have done something huge (or multiple things) IC that's canonically ascribed to a deliberately vague and undefined hero, I'm inclined to be deeply skeptical and want to avoid them no matter what content they've done, because it feels like powergaming dressed up in a fancy outfit. I've met RPers who are truly, hilariously shitty at endgame content. I've also met raiders who are truly, hilariously shitty writers. Skill at one facet of the game does not automatically translate to skill or "owed" respect in another. As far as I'm concerned, if someone wants to play a formidable, yet believable character? Then they can show that through writing instead of leaning on EX/Savage clears and expecting the rest of the server to accept it without question. TL;DR - I care less about credibility than I do plausibility.
  17. I have two characters. One is my main for content and RP. The other is an RP alt who still isn't through the HW MSQ since I paused post-Vault since at the time, I had no idea what I was doing when it came to playing MCH properly. I work from home, on a flexible schedule, and I still hardly have enough time and attention for both. While I understand and respect that not everyone plays the way I do, considering Balmung's issues with server congestion, locked character creation, and the perpetual cauldron of repressed RPer rage that is the housing market, I really can't get behind this idea. You said yourself that you'd primarily be using extra characters for visual reference and screenshots. To echo Chachanji, they don't need to be on Balmung for that - if you're just getting a nice shot of X character, roll them on another server. Tl;dr - We're on the most populated server in the game, so...yeah, no.
  18. 'Progression' and 'nothing hardcore' generally don't go in the same sentence unless the phrase 'is totally different than goofing around and doing' is between them. The former implies significant time investment in the form of research, practice, and optimization. The latter is what most of the playerbase does (there's nothing wrong with that. They're just very, very different approaches). Based on what you're asking for, you seem to be in search of a light RP FC that also spends time on relatively casual content. There are a lot of those. Step into Ul'dah and you'll trip over a dozen. With all due respect, I'm inclined to believe that no, you did not look hard enough. Tl;dr - Join a roleplaying FC and look in PF if you want to do midcore content, or find/form a static if you're feeling more ambitious once you get to 60.
  19. You had me at Imperial (as one of my characters is also Garlean), though I'm more than happy to RP with you on any of your characters (or on either of mine). Feel free to give me a nudge - I can also ping you if that's easier.
  20. I've met a few people from my FC (Gwenneth, Hyrtwyda, Brave), my previous FC leader (Brynhilde), two friends who I hadn't known lived in Boston as well (Rosaire and Perrine), and another friend from Jersey (Siobhan, currently, though she's changed characters a lot). Also heading to Fanfest this year with the FC mates that I've met and a few that I haven't (Eliane, Aramis, potentially Martiallais if he can make it), and hoping to bump into some Tumblr acquaintances/RPC folks.
  21. I have one alt (because I am bad at alts) sitting at level 57 (because I am bad at MCH). Mostly I use her for RP, though I do want to gear her and get her to endgame...once I figure out how not to be terrible at filling things with bullets. Short answer: Yes. If you feel like it's worth the effort to make and level another character, then go for it.
  22. Not sure when I'll be getting on Thursday, but it'll probably be sometime during the afternoon. So yeah, I can probably make that too if you have space for one more. Some of my FC mates might want to tag along, but I'd have to ask. I'm not super picky when it comes to food (except for Mexican - generally not a fan), but I do enjoy a drink or two. Not particular about location, either, as long as it's within walking distance.
  23. I'll be there, along with...well, basically half of my FC. We were lucky and managed to grab rooms in the Paris, so that's less walking, at least.
  24. Hey, welcome back! It's good to see you again. Might have to give you a nudge ingame sometime.
