Whoever writes this shit needs a reality check. Where's the "Check your fucking judgement" quiz?

I can draw you stick people for free <3

Pretty much sums up my feelings on it. One of my biggest guilty pleasure TV shows is Grey's Anatomy, and every season something absolutely dreadful happens to the main characters.

From what I've read, I've seen the exact opposite. I'm not seeing these new(er) people complaining about doing the MSQ, but rather the veterans complaining that they have to repeat it on an alt. (Completely forgetting the fact that neither FF MMO is alt friendly in the slightest.) This game doesn't requires alts....so the fact people have alts is their own fault really and there is an option not to have them and most people who are not-RPers don't have them. I have two alts and I've beaten HW twice....took me about two weeks for my alt and now I am working on my third alt. It's not difficult once you know how to do everything. I think part of the contention in this is that it's still a time-sink. Those two+ weeks you spent leveling and going through content again could have been spent RPing or doing other things, etc. I haven't seen anyone say that the game was hard to play for difficulty, but rather, hard to play knowing that the time could have been used elsewhere, possibly more effectively in their opinions. That pretty much can be said about MMOs in general, can't it? I mean, if you roll an alt on any MMO, you're still starting at the bottom of the barrel. Even if the game is a faceroll, you're still taking time out to do something to get that toon ready for whatever you have planned for it. I'll use EQ2 as an example, since I know the mechanics of that game better than say World of Warcraft. If I were to roll a new alt on EQ2 (without buying a "heroic character," which starts at level 90 and in my opinion a colossal waste of money), I'd start at level 1 with no gear, no fame. Nothing. Because I played EQ2 for so long and followed the development closely, I could easily get a character to level 100 and 320 AAs (if you played FFXI, think of it as Merit Points and just roll with it) in the span of a weekend. Two weekends if it wasn't double EXP. That's time I could've effectively used for something else. Anything else. Would I like to have been RPing during that time? Sure. But I also wanted an inquisitor in my arsenal, and unless I wanted to spend 40 bucks to buy one leveled most of the way for me, I just had to suck it up and deal with the tedious time sink of leveling that I've done a thousand times across multiple toons beforehand. It sucked, sure. But that's the nature of the beast. And in that game, I couldn't have level 100 on every class on one character. Or level 100 of every crafter on one character. You were forced to re-roll a new character (or in the case of crafting, wipe all your progress and start over again. And who the hell would do THAT?) So I really don't see that side of the argument. This is an MMO. MMOs are full of time sinks. That's how SE makes their money to continue funding development for this ever changing game.

Is politely correcting someone's grammar/spelling offensive? Why?
Addison replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
Like everything else, it depends on the situation and the person. Mostly I abstain from correcting people. I have a wonderful friend I met through roleplay when I played Everquest 2. She was the first friend I made in the roleplaying community in that game, and several years later, we're still the best of friends. She's absolutely wonderful. She's highly intelligent. She's so much fun to be around and is like a little ray of sunshine across your screen. She can't write worth a shit though. Spelling errors galore. Grammatical errors everywhere. It's an English teacher's worst nightmare. But I muscle through it. She's self-conscious about her writing but she really does try. She's abstained from forum RP for a long time because people would send her nasty messages about her writing. When she did get involved with arcs on forums, she would ask me to proof read her writing. Naturally, I don't correct her unless she asks, or if I need clarification in our roleplay. I know how hard she tries, and the fact she can weave a wonderful story and make roleplay so much fun it should be a crime far outweighs the small annoyance of spelling errors. If someone corrects me, though? I don't generally care. -
I tend to avoid using any kind of fast travel when RPing in MMOs. It makes the world feel so incredibly small. It takes a lot of the adventure away. How can someone be possibly approached by bandits in the woods if they're teleporting everywhere? I favor more mundane routes of travel: boats, airships, chocobos etc. It's just my personal preference. After playing Everquest 2 for years and watching open world RP literally disappear thanks to convenience features like teleporting around the world in the blink of an eye (and private homes and guild halls but that's a different story), the whole teleportation thing left a sour taste in my mouth.

I role played a character in Everquest 2 for a long time. I liked her concept. I enjoyed the way she grew. It opened a lot of doors for a lot of different types of roleplay. My character was the beta twin in a brother/sister set of twins. The brother was a real asshole. The trouble I learned with playing assholes is no one wants to roleplay with them after a while. So I roleplayed the sister, who went through a lot of training in a military setting. It hardened her, perhaps a bit too much so. After several years, she was angry and bitter and went from the good guy to the bad guy. That was fun for a while but then it lost its allure. So my idea for Addison? Create the exact opposite of what my previous character was.

You can always poke me. My WHM is 60 and I'm done with brunt of the MSQ (just level 60 dungeons to unlock). I don't mind waiting for people in cut scenes and I'm sure I could help find a few people to help us out. My in game name is Addison Stone. Feel free to poke me

Getting into Balmung - Not Happening Indefinitely.
Addison replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
A "perfect storm" that is never an issue in any other MMO. >_> Because no other game has ever locked people out of creating characters on certain servers? Sorry, I'm calling BS. -
Getting into Balmung - Not Happening Indefinitely.
Addison replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Bandwidth isn't the only issue though. Character databases for MMOs are huge. You would get a migraine going through it all. When an update is applied to the game, it needs to be applied to each individual character. That takes a lot of time and is a big reason why updates are several hours long and not instantaneous. Think of how many people you run by on a daily basis in game. I easily run by a couple hundred per day at least. Now imagine if each of those people had 1-4 alts. (I myself have a total of 5 characters on Balmung.) Couple that with the fact that the Aether datacenter houses two of the most popular servers in the game and probably has more characters than all the other datacenters combined, you pretty much have a perfect storm as to why these servers are closed with the exception of paid transfers. -
It's yellow. It's a good idea: I've seen this idea thrown around in various LS's. I'd also like to throw out that while RPC is a small fraction of the community, there's nothing from stopping people from spreading the word to various LS's. Heck even shout once in a while at hubs would work, I would think. Word of mouth is a powerful tool, and something as simple as this doesn't need a long explanation. And if people don't want to use it, no big deal.

Please disregard as I am no longer seeking roleplay.

How can I choose just one? There are so many. Like the time I tanked Suzaku as WHM/NIN in FFXI (CoP era) because I could. I got yelled at and looting rights taken away for a month, but it was worth it. Or the time a GM appeared at King Arthro and proceeded to tea-bag all the AFK botters that died to Knight Crabs. Or the time I went to someone's house in EQ2 to buy some ridiculously overpriced item (if you go to their house, you avoid broker fees) only to find people in the middle of some really explicit ERP carrying on upstairs, but still in emote range. I bought my item and shouted "Don't mind me! Just checking the meter! Carry on!" and left. Or the sweet feeling of satisfaction I got from deleveling my BRD from 75 to 74 on purpose. Or that time when my roommate got his ass kicked by an invisible caribou in World of Warcraft and how almost a decade later, he still hasn't lived that joke down. Or...or... There's just too many!!! :dazed:

Just pointing it out in case Nebbs message wasn't clear: You posted this today (July 18th) but said it's July 17th, which was yesterday. Was it a typo in the message?

balmung Caravanning Novelist Branching Out
Addison replied to Erimmont Chevalier's topic in Chronicled Connections
If your caravan happens to wander in the Twelveswood, give me a shout. I'd be interested in roleplaying. -
That's A Wipe is an OOC networking & socializing linkshell for roleplayers and non-roleplayers alike. We are currently small, but looking to expand. Our aim is a relaxed environment where people can talk about whatever (within reason, of course) and hopefully find themselves some new friends, new group mates, or just new people to laugh with. Rules Membership is open to those who are 18+, though sometimes a member's child will be playing their parent's account. Please be mindful of this if this situation arises. Be silly, not malicious. All playstyles are equal here. Be respectful of other peoples' playstyles, whether they roleplay, raid, craft, gather, PvP, or shout Naul jokes in Coerthas. Have a sense of humor. Memes are funny and we like them, so feel free to use them. We're also very inappropriate at times. Be excellent to each other. (Don't be a jerk.) Whether Ul'Dah is interesting or not is a matter of personal opinion. Personally I can think of a lot more interesting RP hooks for Ul'Dah's setting than I can for say....Gridania. And my character is from Gridania, lives in Gridania, and has hardly ever left the Twelveswood ICly. As others have stated if you want RP in Limsa, then create it. The worst that happens is people walk right past you.

As a healer, I definitely feel the anxiety. I think I'm going to start hunting for a static, because while the majority of people in this thread don't seem to have issues, I seem to always get stuck with the diva 'too cool for school' tanks who don't want to wait for MP, pull while I'm watching a cutscene, then bitch when I state that I've never done dungeon A.

Acceptable Things at Scheduled Events
Addison replied to Warren Castille's topic in Chronicled Events
I think when people take the time out of their busy schedules and lives to plan something for an RP community, they have every right to set ground rules that promote cooperative roleplay. It looks to me as if that guy was just being a douchebag. "...he draws his lance and begins attempting to injure as many of those nearby as possible" isn't even a real emote to me. It doesn't specify who the targets were, just those 'nearby.' Well what's nearby? 6 inches? A foot? A yard? Did you stab people with your lance or did you swoop it in a horizontal arc? It leaves a lot to interpretation, and since this guy wants to play the part of the antagonist, he needs to be more specific. And honestly? If some random guy just walks into (insert public place here) and starts beating the crap out of people for no apparent reason, I'm pretty sure others would step up and try to placate him. Even if that means a punch to the head. -
I find it hard to take you seriously when you demand exclusivity yet you have a static and play more than one game. You expect one person to devote all their time to you, including RL, out-of-game information that they may or may not be comfortable sharing with you, when there's no guarantee you'll give that in return? What happens when you go off to a different game and said partner doesn't want to play it? What happens when you're busy with said static? What happens when your partner just wants to roleplay and you don't? I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but on top of your post coming off as creepy, that's ridiculously unfair. You've set this up as you get to do whatever you like, whenever you like, and your 'partner' is expected to wait around and do exactly as you do when you feel like doing it. WHILE alienating everyone else in the game. I myself much prefer to have a partner in whatever game I'm playing, so I know what it's like to want that sort of connection. I also know what it's like to have that sort of connection, so I speak from experience. You're asking for way above and beyond what I consider a normal partnership. Your demands are too high and what you offer in return doesn't even begin to balance the scales. No one should be obligated to give you Skype or Steam information from the word go. No one should be obligated to do exactly what you want to do when you want to do it. No one should be obligated to forsake any connections they've already made, ICly or OOCly, because you demand that of them.

I picked Hyur purely for aethestic reasons and nothing more. While 9 times out of 10 I will always pick an elvish race (especially a 'dark' elvish race), Elezens just look too weird to me, and none of the other races appealed to me no matter how many hours I spent in character creation. So I went with a boring Hyur.

Probably my biggest pet peeve that I haven't seen mentioned (or missed) is when someone goes crazy over the top with their injuries. I'm talking worst case scenario here. The thing that drives me crazy? They not only demand OOCly their character to live, they also demand that their character be in tip top shape 5 minutes later to do something equally or more stupid that got them in trouble in the first place. As someone who roleplays a healer, who has roleplayed a healer across multiple games and settings, this is just annoying. Also, mind wipes. Mind wipes are just a fancy way of saying retcon. To me anyway. I don't know why they bug me. They just do.
