  1. That's the thing though, tedium is its own sort of difficulty, and some people honestly like a grind. It's entirely up to preference. People who claim DaS is work are usually bad because the work you put into it to get good isn't fun for them like it was fun for you and me, so they never do it. For me, relic stopped when I hit the book grind and had to wait two hours for a FATE to spawn. I had much more fun wiping in Coil than waiting on FATEs, but for some people that waiting on FATEs is fun and "work" in a way that they enjoy, and it's ok for them to feel pride in finishing that achievement. There are many people who are well... not very good or inclined towards defeating tough mechanics like Dark Souls or Coil of Bahamut. Many, many players just don't have the traits geared for succeeding in those game environments, and that's ok. Those gamers deserve to feel accomplished in the way they prefer, without anyone dismissing that enjoyment as not valid because it's "not the way games are supposed to be". I get you entirely, I just think you came into the thread throwing haymakers and no one was really understanding why you seemed to be bashing on relic.
  2. It's okay to like overrated games. You don't need to dismiss others because of that. I'm not? I was responding to dismissing some styles of gaming as "work". You know what, forget it. All of your posts lately towards me have just been designed to rankle and I don't really get why as I haven't done anything to you. It's a shame because you're honestly the only decent RPer I've had the joy of running into the past several months. But if you dislike me, you dislike me, and there's nothing I can do about it. Just block me here if I bother you so much.
  3. Which, of course, requires imagery depicting the modern action game as infantilizing the player. It's the only way. Almost everything is infantilizing compared to Dark Souls. And seriously it's just a funny comic, I wouldn't over think it.
  4. So.. you understand where I'm coming from perfectly? I don't understand the point of your image response. Dark Souls is a game that many consider too much "work" and dismiss it because games are "supposed to be fun". The difficulty is the fun, you clearly get it if you play/enjoy Dark Souls. Edit: whoops, missed the tedious bit. Well "tedious" is totally subjective and the only reasonable way to finish a discussion there is to say "to each his or her own". Honestly though I think you're just here to pick a fight, no one here is the level of elitist douche that you're responding too.
  5. I'm going to assume you're being sarcastic. How exactly is it equally dismissive compared to this? and this? I am explaining MY preference for games without criticizing or dismissing others preferred play style.
  6. Oh boy, that casual dismissive tone about how games are not supposed to be "work", this is one of my favorites. One of the greatest feelings out there is having a career that you enjoy. When you like going to work because it challenges you in a good way and leaves you fulfilled. Why wouldn't I want my games to be any different? The work I put into my games IS the fun for me. Hunting a new monster in Monhan, the difficulty of a Souls game, old school Megaman or Castlevania having punishing mechanics, and the joy of wiping over and over again in Final Coil until you get it right. Yes it's work. The work is fun.
  7. XIV already runs sub 30 fps most of the time on the PS3. I bought the CE and played it a few times for novelty sake and it is so terrible compared to the PC/PS4 version that I never bothered with it again. It's also possible that only the female model reuses assets or that the limit of acceptable performance has been hit and that they'll be dropping the amount of displayable PC models again come Heavensward. I can't discount that I could just be flat out wrong too. My point is that technical limitations could very well have played a factor in the design of the Au Ra.
  8. Unless you do what Star Wars the Old Republic did and what I suspect FFXIV is doing with the Au Ra (that is reusing bodies and switching out heads) this is absolutely wrong, a race with 100% truly unique assets will be very demanding on working memory. But if you reuse assets from existing races (in this case the body) it won't be that much more demanding. You're not entirely off though, it's for both reasons; HDD space and memory, with the latter being a much larger factor. The PS3 has 256mb of memory for the GPU that's ridiculously low for modern architecture. It is the sole reason that racial customization choices are so limited to begin with. Although the Au Ra heads are unique I strongly suspect that the body pieces are just re-textured Elezen male and Miqo'te female models. However I do understand that this is just a theory and I might be wrong, we can't possibly know for sure until the data-mining settles things, but my idea about it being a technical consideration as well do in fact hold water and a few screenshots showing unique head models do not disprove it. They have circumvented PS3 limitations so far by severely limiting the draw distance, using smaller zones, dropping the PC display limit, and gutting all the graphical effects that make the PS4/PC version look so good. Heavensward is a different story. The areas are huge. It will be alright when you are not moving through the zone quickly as the limits to the draw distance will make it "playable" on the PS3, but when moving quickly through these huge zones with a flying mount like we saw in the Heavensward tour video the PS3's performance is going to suffer greatly with severe FPS loss and worse of all, graphical popup.
  9. I think Au Ra will have the same amount of customization. What the wording means is that more of the difference will be focused on the horns and tail. The PS3 limitations just won't allow any more than we already have. Heavensward on PS3 is going to run like shit, which is I believe why they have not shown it in action yet. In fact I suspect the male Au Ra is a modified elezen body and the female one a modified Miqo'te body, to add a new race and still be as memory efficient as possible. That would also mean that the dimorphism is a technical choice as well.
  10. I personally really dig the design and extreme height difference. It makes them more alien and magical compared to the less dymorphic races. It also makes them more of a sue race but I don't find myself bothered by that at all. Still planning to go Au Ra full time when I come back to RP.
  11. /speculation Perhaps they are both. St. Shiva was a succubus. Therefore demon/dragon race but only the females can look demonlike cause reasons.
  12. To be clear "bestial" is not the word they used. So brace yourself for more cute/sexy demon/succubus.
  13. There's no metric to measure RP on a scale of good and bad, so it's not really possible to objectively call someone an elitist. It's just a term used to bash someone who is vocal about their own RP philosophy and as a result of that is indirectly critical of someone else's RP. Here's several instances where I've been labeled one though, not all of them are experiences I had in XIV: Having issue with a sudden retcon of character details that would have greatly changed how mine and others characters acted towards that character Objecting to canonizing more extreme fetish in group roleplay (and the children that fetish produces) Not wanting to include those whose RP is very "in the moment" and are unable to follow through in long term plot arcs in my own private plots Being put-off by characters with super healing powers that are neither Conjury, White Magic, or Scholar magics that attempt to roll into a scene and make regular lore-based healers completely obsolete with little effort Insisting that RP can be more than just escapism from a tortured life (this one isn't even related to discussion that happened here, surprisingly) Being a raider out of character These are just a few of the reasons I've been called elitist, it's really such a meaningless term when you apply it to RP.
  14. From the crunchyroll interview. (http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-feature/2015/03/08/feature-final-fantasy-xiv-heavensward-sneak-peek-and-interview-with-naoki-yoshida) Does this mean they're a dragon/demon humanoid race? If so, why can only the females go this route? Very interesting.
  15. I see my meta-joke on the RPC's expense got deleted already, but anyway this is a great idea.
  16. Oh, well I guess I can just bump that one if a mod feels like deleting this one.
  17. So I saw this Au Ra RSE cosplay that's currently on display at PAX East and it lead me to thinking it would be cool to have a cosplay thread.
  18. Uh.. they showed up at what they thought was a child's house. That's way more than just lewd text messages to an underage person. Not that the latter is any sort of real problem in the RP community.
  19. lol Here we go again. Watch out guys, the police are coming to arrest you for writing naughty words! Some girl in a video claimed it happened without providing any evidence, so it must be true.
  20. Our static Paladin had to bail on us, so this week we had to pick up people for auditions to replace him. Normally wouldn't share the videos but I was particularly impressed with the groups ability to recover when things go wrong and guide a tank who hasn't cleared the last phase during the fight.
  21. It's so over the top, but I really love this robe.
  22. Well, at least you admit you're already probably wrong about it. I realize it's a feeling I have influenced by the bad experiences I've had in XIV and not necessarily true. Having said that I'd really welcome the coming months providing empirical evidence that I am.
  23. Escapism doesn't necessarily mean a departure from BAD THING IN LIFE -- it can simply be escape from boredom; which is the basis of entertainment. The term has been used too much to highlight those who try to get away from the less pleasant parts of life. The implication is based on a lack of that understanding. While that may be your intended use of the word the actual definition is exactly as Warren posted.
  24. Nothing, but RP elitists will shit all over it. I'm comfortable with being labeled an elitist.
