It's not about cleaving to the traditional lore. It's about missing the fact that you're playing a humanoid cat like race. It's more than fine that people had to RP before there was sufficient lore, though the name lore wasn't outright stated, female naming conventions were easy to figure out in 1.0, the name Rakka Kuhn was chosen long before the naming conventions were released, and I arrived at that name after running around the 1.0 world taking notes of the Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te female names and combining those observable patterns with an old tabletop character name. If anyone doubts me on this one, here's the old lodestone link, and a snapshot of the oldest achievement, long before the naming conventions were released: http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/rc/character/top?cicuid=12277162

I... hadn't thought of how the Balmung restriction might will still be in effect come Heavensward and severely limit AuRa creation. Best possibility I've read about AuRa and Heavensward in regard to RP in days, not even being sarcastic, I hope it stays locked. So...you're hoping new character creation stays locked throughout the release of the expansion...? Yes, anything to stop people from ruining AuRa the same way they ruined Miqo'te. I know it's a controversial opinion and perhaps a bit mean-spirited, but after a year and a half of polarizing lore, man-hating futa covens, and Hyur characters wearing cat ears and a tail, I'm done. The fewer AuRa the better.

I'm floored that people think this game is grindy. We have one quest line that forces a grind, everything else is extremely accommodating to people who hate grind. You want tomestones? Do your expert roulette once a day, you'll cap out before the week is through. That's hardly a grind. Don't like the busywork that is the relic quest line? Don't do it. There's faster, less grindy ways to get higher iLvl weapons, and truthfully if you're not doing Coil anything higher than ilvl 120 is not really necessary anyway.

Well all make exceptions now and then, it wouldn't be much of a life if you never ate chocolate or crisps. But you should deny it most of the time. It's the only thing that works.

This might rub some people the wrong way, but here's my honest advice. Dieting is not what you want to do because dieting is a temporary thing that you will eventually stop doing. After you stop dieting you will quickly gain back whatever you lost. This is why fad diets like 5:2, Atkins, Paleo, etc, are doomed to failure. You cannot possibly cleave to such a strict dietary requirement your entire life. You will fail. The cold hard truth that is difficult to accept about being fit (and looking good, they're the same thing) is that you pretty much have to change your entire way of thinking, forever. You do not "go on a diet", you improve your permanent, day to day diet. Again, it's got to be permanent. Additionally because of our sedentary modern lifestyles a change of diet alone will only leave you being thinner but not very fit (some people refer to this as being "skinny-fat"). You need exercise if you want to look good, always. Our entire view of portions and food in the west has been so muddled by the diet industry that some people have trouble getting to the factual science, and that science is pretty clear. If you have the willpower and are lucky enough to have avoided bad genetics (which a small % do unfortunately have bad genetics, but it's used as an excuse way, way too often by many, many people), then you can do it. Again, modern lifestyles are extremely sedentary compared to our ancestors, even if you work out, it's nothing compared to their lifestyles. The average 25 year old male, depending on height, needs little more than 1600-2500 calories a day tops to be healthy (for women it's even less, unfortunately). Any more and they will put on weight until it matches their daily calorie allotment - usually thousands more than they need. And many, many people have no idea how much they're actually eating, some are swinging numbers in the 10,000 range every day, and have no idea. My wild guess is that most Americans get between 3000-5000 calories a day and have no earthly idea that it's happening. In the past, Humans were burning thousands of calories every day with backbreaking labor, so they developed a diet to match that labor. When the labor left our average lives, the diet didn't. This has left us with an appetite far, far greater than we need, and it will be a long, long while before Humans adjust. What you'll be happy with with is something you have to figure out yourself. I know people who gave up sugar entirely and work out several times a week, I also know people who don't give a shit, and many more (like myself) who fall in between. Personally I do my best to cut out sweets from home permanently, I try to only eat or drink them when I go out or have a guest. My portion size with all meals is small. I do resistance training twice a week and run on a treadmill three times a week. I'm 5'9 @ 130 lbs, and at 30 years old I'm in better shape than some friends a decade younger than I am. I get asked all the time by friends how I do it and they never like the answer: Eat right and exercise, in whatever amount you can manage. Forever. That's the hard truth no one wants to accept.

- t9/8 solo heal (before 2.4), I wouldn't dream of doing this with third coil. Way too much gear requirement, though it's been done by a Scholar in t10~ - Cancel echo buff, kill all the nodes in t2 so that you fight a super-powered ADS that instant cast AOE moves and hits like a truck (though this was right after 2.4, with current average gear this won't be any sort of difficult) Stuff like this: 3m2Ums6oq6M

FINAL FANTASY XIV Patch 2.5 - Before the Fall Trailer

I switch back and forth with the voices. Recently I have spent more time with the english voices because Urianger is voiced by Gideon Emery, and I love hearing Balthier speak so poetically. -
FINAL FANTASY XIV Patch 2.5 - Before the Fall Trailer
allgivenover replied to allgivenover's topic in FFXIV News
World of Darkness, MSQ, and new dungeons are all casual. In fact there is no hardcore content in 2.5 at all. Well then, I don't know what word to use for players who, for all kinds of reasons, do not go into dungeons or do MSQ. I meant stuff that did not really require progress, I guess? Town gear, emotes, poses, character creation options and the like. For reasons that I will not entail (mostly it's a health issue/personal problem of mine, but also involves my RP characters) I currently cannot activate quests above level 28 yet (or obtain gear that would allow me to partake to these newest things without being killed in one shot), so this stuff is kind of out of reach for me at this point. I was hoping for things that did not require progress and gave RP options. But oh well, maybe they're there and just not in the trailer ^^; At that point what you are asking for is content for people who don't play the game really. There probably is new little things they are not showing, it usually seems to be the case with the patch trailers. -

Something Just Occured To Me About Au Ra
allgivenover replied to Tiergan's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Doma is most definitely a country and Yugiri is the leader of the refugees from Doma. What that means about what social position she held back in Doma I'm not sure, but I'm sure about those two things. Doma wasn't just a village and Yugiri is more than a representative. -

...already covered how it doesn't necessitate her being royalty. Talk about getting totally distracted over word choice. I guess I was the only one who thought it was an interesting idea. -

The verbiage isn't as important as the idea it was describing anyway. -
Something Just Occured To Me About Au Ra
allgivenover replied to Tiergan's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I was under the impression from the quests that she's not just a really skilled Ninja, but that she actively leads the Doman refugees, I see how that doesn't necessitate her being some sort of royalty. It just got caught up in my speculation verbiage. EDIT: I recalled that the japanese voice-over and dialogue referes to her as Yugiri-dono (殿). That's roughly akin to addressing someone as "Lord" or "Lady" but doesn't really necessitate her being royalty. To have someone like Alphinaud (who is a powerful figure in Eorzean politics) call her that means she's on his level socially in terms of importance, or higher. -
Something Just Occured To Me About Au Ra
allgivenover replied to Tiergan's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Just some speculation I've been mulling over. What if AuRa have a strict caste system? We don't yet have a race with that theme yet, and the actual dragons in Dravania/Mercydia seem to have sort of hierarchy. For example, the clans would be the "peasant" AuRa and the "royals" AuRa (names are arbitrary, I'm just throwing out words that would be roughly analogous to social positions). Yugiri is obviously some sort of royalty right? What if that spreads to other AuRa? I thought about making another thread, but this seemed like a good place to vomit my musing speculation. -
My point was that with the Garleans there is something to go on. With the AuRa we have pretty much nothing, so the argument people are making against RPing AuRa before we know well.. anything about them can't really be reasonably applied to Garleans. Granted, you could pull off RPing AuRa in near total ignorance about them smoothly (and really I sincerely hope there's nothing weird about them at all culturally or we're going to have another Miqo'te situation) and if you're having fun then go for it, but there is reasonable counsel for why it's a bad idea.
-
Not really. You could apply the same argument, but it fits poorly. We've seen plenty of Garleans in the story so far and a lot can be gleaned about what they're like from what we can see. Additionally they're all comprised of the five races and conquered peoples (other than the purebloods of course), which we know a good deal about already. Other than Yugiri there is literally nothing to go on with the AuRa. Pretty much everything about them is up in the air. You could write a family background, origin story, etc, and then find out that they don't do conventional families, that they spring fully formed as an "adult" from a clutch of eggs and have no idea who their parents are, or that they've all been sealed away (except for Yugiri and whatever family she may or may not have) and an event at the end of 2.0 is going to release them into the world again. Obviously I'm speculating wildly here but we really have no idea where SE is going with the AuRa. With Garleans we can make reasonable conclusions. More difficult to RP for sure, but still, applying the same arguement doesn't stick very well. Everything about the AuRa is a shot in the dark at the moment and it's probably not a good idea to get attached to character ideas that may have to be severely altered (or severely scorned in the case of Miqo'te lore) to fit with whatever SE writes. But hey, this is RP and at the end of the day it's for fun, so have it. I'll be waiting.

Lilliana's List of Lovely Literature

Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice Can't help but share the mother of all modern vampire fiction. I first read this at nine years old, and never have grown out of it. You can read it as a metaphor for suppressed sexuality, or take it at its glorious face value as the vampire Louis de Point du Lac paints a vivid picture of 1800s New Orleans and the shares with you the story of how he became a vampire. These are not the vampires of modern speculative fiction. They don't love boring human girls or sparkle, nor are they even capable of sex. Blood drives them to ecstasy (something something metaphor for sexuality something something). It's just awesome. And no one does melancholic better than Anne Rice. -
I'm retiring Rakka'li and switching my main to AuRa come Heavensward, what that means for plot stuff in this thread I don't know yet, but I'm excited to find out their lore so that I can have more than a vague idea about it and potentially make connections with people. Part of me is wondering if they're so far out there in terms of lore that deciding stuff like age and parents is going to turn out way, way off, so I'm just waiting. Like, what if they hatch from eggs as fully formed "adults"? Yes I know, unlikely, but I don't want any crazy surprises.

Expansion Announced: Heavensward, releasing Spring 2015
allgivenover replied to Zyrusticae's topic in FFXIV News
I was there and I do not recall anything about each class getting two jobs like Arcanist. In fact the general tone was the opposite - it was there that Darknight was revealed to have no base class at all. That sort of news would be huge for us, we would not have missed it. -
Discussion of "Polyamory: A Roleplaying Guide"
allgivenover replied to K'nahli's topic in RP Discussion
I don't see evidence of this in regards to Moon Keepers whatsoever given that their presence is so culturally scattered throughout the game world. Granted, there's a general lack of information for or against, but based on what we have? I'm inclined to disagree.
