There's a heavily guarded cerulean extraction facility in Thanalan, the empire is pretty much on everyone's doorstep.

The greying of the MMO and what does it mean for RP players?
allgivenover replied to hypatiala's topic in FFXIV Discussion
If we had Korea's infrastructure, we would be talking about a difference between 15ms (or less) vs maybe 50 or so. Which is virtually indistinguishable. Once again, yes, better infrastructure will help, but we live in a country that's 100 times the size of South Korea. The low latency there is as much due to the fact that everything is right next to everything else as it is the superior infrastructure. In ARR's case it's going to be a disadvantage to PVP as a west coast player. -

Wow, yes there is. If there was no difference then explain the vast popularity of proxy services like WTFast and Smoothping. You should try playing Aion PVP at endgame, where in some cases having a ping as high as 120 ms as I do can translate to a huge disadvantage when facing someone with a ping as low as 80 ms due to them living a state or two closer. Some classes are downright impossible to play well if you live too far from Texas, where the servers are located. /cough Assassin. -

Only in poorly designed content. It's certainly not limited to a DPS epeen race as you describe. An earlier post of yours... ...is that strategy and timing of your heals not evidence that it's not the control scheme or lack of being "trapped in a tab-target" interface that determines how skill based a game is? It's certainly a different way of going about it, but I disagree that it's inherently superior and that ARR would've benefited from an action combat system. In my case I actually enjoy playing the odds and don't like the fact that an entire attack can be mitigated if my ping is high enough and I can get out of the way in time. I wasn't around in TERA for very long, but it was infuriating to lose out in PVP because someone lived much closer to the servers than I did. Speaking of server latency and infrastructure, yes, South Korea has better internet infrastructure than we do, but even if we had an equal level of infrastructure we still wouldn't see nearly the same amount of reduced latency that South Korea enjoys. South Korea is roughly 100 times smaller than the USA, and in our case the vast geographical distance that connections have to cross would cancel out a good portion of the benefit that better infrastructure would provide. -

I still don't see how it's different from moving out of a mob boss's frontal cone area attack, or backing off to avoid a mob centered aoe in a traditional tab target MMO. The interface the player uses is different, that's really it. -

Thank the Twelve they didn't. Also, there was nothing fun about circle strafing a mob to death in TERA. People went on and on about how it all different and revolutionary, but in fact it was just as "grindy" (I put "grindy" in quotes because it's used to describe any task that is repeated often in a game that people don't like because there is no real quantifier for the term) as any old school tab-target MMO. The details were different but the result was the same. There's also the issue of having to aim the target reticle, constantly forcing a camera angle that was focused on the mob alone. I prefer the "scene" sort of viewpoint that the third person, reticle free target system provides. The best online action RPG I've played so far is without a doubt Phantasy Star Online 2. While not a proper MMO they pretty much nailed the action part down without making me feel like I'm playing a shooter. w0IJIdf9XQ4 Zoom to about a minute in. Oh yes, so different and revolutionary~ it's still a bunch of high level people surrounding a boss mob and spamming heal/dps moves, while occasionally moving out of the way of area of effect attacks. Really, the action combat didn't make any /real/ difference in the end, aside from divide low ping players from high ping players -

I love me my twitch based games, I enjoy a lot of stuff that requires precise timing, like Monster Hunter, 2d fighters, and old school Megaman. However, I don't like the action combat thing in MMORPGs, I prefer the tab target and numbers game. Why? Well, for me it's because I enjoy RPGs the most when they're about planning, investment, and immersion. I feel that the run and gun mentality that action MMOs foster is directly contrary to the type of experience I'm looking for in an RPG. So, so very glad that ARR isn't a twitch game, would've killed it for me. -
I had Rakka'li actually take up smoking as a way to block out the stink that Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa are sure to carry on the breeze. Nice idea to leave notes for character scent references.

I'm working on ways to get the word out for this, it kind of hinges on campus being crowded again come fall though. -
It's a common misconception that tribal peoples are savage or "uncivilized" as a rule, nothing about the lore so far suggests that Miqo'te are savage aside from the lone detail that the Tia/Nunh struggle can sometimes end in death. I feel that perhaps some of the hostility towards the tribal lore is perhaps bound in this incorrect assumption that being "tribal" comes hand in hand with being backward, ignorant, violent (or feral as you put it) and uncivilized. Once again I liken it to modern Native American tribes, who are very modern while holding on to old tribal customs within their communities. Don't mistake my position as insisting that there are no non-tribal Miqo'te, as I said we have little to go on regarding how many stick to traditional ways beyond naming conventions. What I am advocating is that we don't know for sure, and at the moment there's no definitive evidence one way or the other which is more common for a the average Miqo'te. I think that the complete adherence to the naming conventions suggest that most Miqo'te have at least a passive connection to tribal roots in some form, but that's just my interpretation of what we see so far.

It's fine to have a differing personal conclusion, but please refrain from posting that personal conclusion as confirmed lore when is isn't, no matter how much you'd prefer that reality match your conclusion. The truth is we just don't know.

There were three male Miqo'te NPCs in Phase 3. One in a tribe, one in the ahm... I forget the name of it, the place where Minfilia and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn hang out, and one Keeper male drinking alone in the South Shroud. So SE does seem to be keeping in line with the whole rarity thing. My personal opinion is that it's best to go with the "they've always been there" approach that many RPers are going with, even though we didn't see them in 1.0. We literally have nothing solid to go on that reasonably points us in one direction or the other about how Miqo'te live. In fact, there isn't a single NPC Miqo'te that has a name that doesn't follow tribal naming conventions, yet at the same time there's a crap ton of Miqo'te in all of the city-states that don't seem to have a tribal association beyond that naming convention that we can see. My own conclusion of it at the moment is that because there are no Miqo'te that break from traditional name conventions found in game (it's interesting to note that no other race/clan breaks from naming conventions either) and that the naming conventions post (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/61150-Miqo-te-Naming-Conventions) speaks about tribal culture in the present tense, and that we actually see a Seeker tribe in game, I'm thinking it might be a situation akin to Native American's in the United States today. Tribal customs (or modern versions of them) persist in private, but this is largely unseen by the rest of the population. Of course this is just my present take on it, if/when we get more lore about it my conclusion will change, but at this point I'm doubtful we're going to see anything conclusive until if/when a story arc touches on it in a way that forces them to expand on things.

The Hyur has a rather dramatic look to him. I also love that hair and was thinking of using it for an alt.

New player going to Balmung here too, you certainly won't be alone.

I'm thinking/hoping that it won't come up often, due to rarity. In the Aion community we had/have a "plastic surgery ticket" that you could purchase from the cash shop that allowed you to change everything but your gender, it had an in character presence via the "Daeva of Appearance". Opinions varied about whether or not it was a good thing, but thankfully when it was used IC most of the time it wasn't done so lightly. I suspect a lot of people RP the race/gender that they want to RP, and as a result won't be quick to change things around IC. If anything we'll mostly see the occasional "oh, no! this alchemy accident turned me into a boy/girl! what do I do!?" sort of event, but that will likely be uncommon too. Regardless, it's not as if you can stop people from using it IC, so expect it to happen.

I would go with musical notes and short songs that rhyme, I feel like if they rhyme they'll seem more like a song in text form.

I wonder if this means Cleric stance can be used to cover the disparity.

Good to see you here Ari~

Roll a copy of your character on Balmung and attend.

[Gilgamesh] Why not Behemoth as our non-legacy server?
allgivenover replied to Xerek Devereux's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Now you know how the Balmung veterans felt when you all decided you didn't want to play with them. -
As another new roleplayer who had no presence in 1.0 at all and has been nothing but welcomed by the "old guard" that makes up the legacy community all I have to add is that you hit the nail on the head Sylas.

Its... OVER 9000! Bring it Eorzea
allgivenover replied to Niteshade_Rune's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Ah, sorry, your image wasn't loading at first. Frankly, you should be pulling in decent numbers with those specs. The 560ti isn't a bad card. I'm noticing now that your benchmark screenshot lists Intel HD graphics as your display device. That might mean it's running the benchmark on integrated hardware that is nowhere near as powerful as your 560ti, it may be doing this because of a driver problem or because your monitor is plugged into your motherboard's onboard display port instead of your GPU where it's supposed to be. As for upgrades, your processor is fine, and your RAM is already way more than ARR will ever access, a reasonable upgrade would be a single GTX 660 or AMD HD equivalent. Whatever is on sale or has a decent rebate at the time you decide to do it. -
