  1. Hrm thats unfortunate, I hadn't spent time on Wyrmrest Accord, only SWC and Twisting Nether. (Undead in vanilla, re-rolled Belf in BC, dat racial.) I'll admit that even when I played, much of the spontaneous role play seemed to be excuses for duels, and while I think that does provide opportunity, much of it seemed ham-handed. (you're telling me a warlock can start a fight with a Paladin in the middle of SMC and not a single guard would tell them to take it outside? BAH!). I do enjoy the freedom with classes, it affords a great variety of clothing and abilities that you don't often find in static assignment games. For example, i'll often switch to my fishing outfit when meandering across Thanalan, but back to the Thaumaturges robes when within the city.
  2. /salute Welcome to the RPC Moxxi, If you have the chance, take a poke around the forums and check out what discussions are going on, might give you an idea of who to look out for in game. You can also take a look at the linkshell hall along the top for groups that you might meet/be interested in. I also suggest checking the Calendar to see if any events line up with your free time and interest you. Can't go wrong with taking a look at the wiki, maybe snag a template and make a little <> page for your character where you can flesh out ideas, or just read about other peoples. You mentioned being new to FFXIV, so I thought I should clarify when you mentioned race/class combos, while the starting race has little in game mechanics alteration (minor stats) the starting class does change what city you start in and the first segment of your "main story line". after level 10 how ever you can swap classes like I swap coats (Frequently and with great prejudice.) Let us know if you have any questions or comments, Side note, I left WoW what feels like ages ago, is Steamwheedle Cartel still trundling along?
  3. /salute, If nothing else i'll make sure to say hello!
  4. Mmm, well the weekend to prepare for! Have to make sure all the ducks are in a row and all that.
  5. Seconded. A collaborative effort made to show growth, induce change and provide opportunities. (Be they positive or negative in character.)
  6. Ha, yes, I try to simply shrug it off and ask them if they haven't considered joining in. I'm a bit of a morning person so i'm not sure how late I could stay up, but tonight will be interesting and i'll be available for quite some time once I take care of the house.
  7. I'll preface with a big fat, my Garlean lore is hardly up to snuff, I focus primarily on beast tribes, 1.0 and the ancient civilizations. My understanding was the the "brainwashing" applied only to the conquered peoples, not native Garleans. Part of what people will bring up is the quote that "Garlean soldiers were ordered to kill something once a day, so that it became natural and they did it without a second thought." While I agree with the premise, I am still hesitant to accept the depth some some people takes this to imply. I had thought of them along the lines of a religious cult, their information and experiences carefully controlled to not expose them to anything that might conflict with the carefully crafted world view of Garlemeld saviors of the world, Magitek using enlightenment. (Reminds me of the Crusades.) I imagine a deep enough shattering of this world view would cause a re examination of the subjects life, if not a revulsion. If you'd care you could draw parallels with "Hitler Youth" or even some of the more aggressive "bible camps". I would love something official on all this but by Thaliak is there a lot of other things that need to be fleshed out.
  8. No pushiness felt on my part, i'm just making an effort to be a little more self aware. I would recommend touching base with "Europa" (FC/Linkshell) while they might not be a long term fit, but their time would seem to jive better with yours and perhaps they can provide an introduction to some key players. As always, feel free to attend the approaching events listed on the calendar, they'll be running for quite some time and likely have people from various walks of life, both in game an out. Shyness can be a part of it, I think there's a great amount of effort spent in trying to balance public image with what non-rpers might criticize, which is an interesting dance to observe, if nothing else.
  9. I second Freelances' statement and would like to expand on a point. An additional type of RP that I find a bit bemusing, is exclusionary without reason. Twelve knows you can use a whole host of reasons not to interact with an individual, Racism, drastically different world views, bad blood, prior engagements. And so long as these reasons are provided I haven't an issue, but offhanded dismissal I find mildly infuriating. I'm hardly one to talk, i'm picky and temperamental, I can be slow, or argumentative, but I think this is still an experience worth having. I try to make an effort to at least acknowledge anyone who approaches me, even a "My apologies, but i'm currently committed to a task." Before dashing off (I think) can make the difference between the start of a relation and cold indifference. Not that cold indifference is a bad thing in character, but context is everything. Things I like? all of it really, I enjoy stories, all of them, even if they aren't my normal genre. An interesting concept, a willingness to throw yourself into something, they all make it feel more alive to me. Just my 2gil,
  10. Hello again Neero, Might I ask what time zone your based in? perhaps you play at an odd time that might limit your exposure? The adventurers guild in Ul'dah had hardly a seat open yesterday evening (7pm EST to about 9), but that hardly helps you predicament. I'll be on this evening, if you have the opportunity send me a tell, or PM me here when your online and while I might have a duty of my own, I can try recommend a place or two. I will say that I know a mixture of people, some who like the wide avenues and more populated areas, but there are others who like to spend time out of the way. In most cases it helps to simply send them a /tell and ask. While I know this may not always seem the most appropriate action I think a lot of people get wrapped up deeply in an ongoing event and it can take a bit to make them raise their heads from their books. I am certainly included in this, too focused on small tasks for my own good. Just food for thought. Things might seem a bit disheartening but with time and a bit of effort i'm sure you'll do fine. Edit:: I realized some of this might sound dismissive, thats not my intent, I do genuinely hope to provide a few places where you might encounter a person or two along your lines.
  11. I agree with you, its not really my shtick either, but can provide some authenticity to an other wise sterile environment. I'll drop by and bump the thread to keep it exposed from time to time, and if you're on tonight feel free to message me in game, I'm better at making suggestions with the world in front of me. You mentioned enjoying the "Ordinary individual in extraordinary circumstances" have you had the chance to speak with anyone from "The Travelers guild"? (Listed in the Linkshell directory.) A rather friendly bunch that make a habit of traipsing across the realm, which I would imagine provides a catalyst to both meet them, and to develop your character. Just a thought.
  12. And im guessing thats a no to a BWC on Balmung, whelp, back to little Ala Mhigo to find some... "friends"
  13. Not to be the rain on the parade (and please correct me if i'm wrong) But you'll be on Balmung correct? I didn't know the Black Water Company was opening a Balmung wing, although that would suite me fine, lord does it take a lot of bribes to get some childre- I mean chickens.. yes.. chickens.. to experiment on. ...:cactuar:
  14. Hrm, well i'll assume for now you've taken a look at the "Linkshell" directory that hosts both LS/FC's. There are quite a few off the record, such as TALE, many of those group encourage you to meet and greet in game, but hopefully some one will touch base with you here. If nothing else feel free to drop me a line in game (or on Skype, "quarimar") and i'll get you an invite to the shared OOC skype channel where you can poke around. Its a fairly constant stream of babble, where people are, what they're doing who they're with etc. I hope you have the chance to find a fitting home, Please let me know if you have questions about any group in particular or any events that are approaching. I do my best to keep a bit of an overview in mind.
  15. Welcome to the RPC Forums Dovey, Looks like you've already got a couple linkshells and a decent amount of information to work with. I'm a big fan of Gridania as well, and am beyond excited for Good King Moogle Mog which will hopefully have a nice Gridanian tale to go along with it like 1.0. Waiting for the Shroud housing is something that becomes a little harder with each teaser of Limsa that they release. Hope you've had the chance to take a look at the calendar, feel free to check out the events, some are invitations, some are open, all of them will likely be engrossing so you can hardly go wrong. Hope to see you in Eorzea, and good luck out there!
  16. Hmm, I think you've made an interesting turn with it. Ala Mhigo itself doesn't seem a bad idea. Like Ildur mentioned, avoiding future conflicts can require a bit of hoop jumping, but I think being confident in having a firm foundation to work from is worth it. Just to expand on his mention of the fall of the white Raven, which was an amazing battle, there's some more information (on that topic, and a few others) over at: http://xivwiki.com/Lore As a note the Reapers are quite the weapon, in almost every situation you use it they're much more potent than most other options. Most of the patrol i've seen have consisted of 1 Reaper to 3-4 infantry so I think your estimate of a force set to suppress a village is reasonable.
  17. Not much in game roleplay?! Hrm, drop me a tell in game and we can talk a bit, i'll make sure to nose around and let you know when I run into a hot spot or two. I can't recommend enough taking a few moments to poke about the more out of the way areas, the fountain in the center of Ul'dah, the Hermits Grotto, the upper levels in Bronze lake. Hrm, either way, it'll be good to see you at the C&C, hopefully find a few people you can come to talk to as the days go on.
  18. Greetings Mateo, Welcome to the show! Pretty kicking tune, reminds me a bit of Ryoksopp mixed with http://www.jamendo.com/en/list/a76732/nordland Glad to see you've got a fairly experience background, that should give you a firm grasp of all the technical aspects you'll need to keep your feet under you. To expand on Isis' good point of how to get involved in RP, also take a moment, when you have it, to look at the Linkshell hall, a collection of groups that facilitate Roleplay of many different styles. You don't have to pick one and run with it, but I find it nice to know who I might run into in the wide world. Please ask any questions you might have, we're here to help!
  19. Hello Belmont and welcome to the RPC There are a number of Ex-Garleans (through different meens) if nothing else you could take a look at some of the profiles on the wiki and read what they might have written to give yourself a little context. Also take a gander at the forums and the linkshell hall if you have the time, you can get to know some of the groups, maybe send a couple private messages asking about further details, we're a fairly open group here. Ask any questions you might have, raise a few concerns, i'll do my best to address them. I'm hardly an expert in Garlean lore, but i'm going to tag this thread, sleep on a few ideas and see if I don't have anything but sleep deprived ham handed mary-sue back story concepts, in the morning to offer. Either way, hope to see you in Eorzea before too long!
  20. Hello Zeal, I would second what Skaenmoen said and suggest taking a look at the linkshell hall. Feel free to nose around the forums a little bit and see what going on when, if nothing else you can also check the calendar and do a bit of an impromptu meet and greet with some of Eorzeas finest! (invitations may be required depending on the event) Please ask any questions you might have and we'll all do our best to address them. Again, welcome to the RPC.
  21. Hello, and welcome! Great to see you jump in, feel free to take a look at the forums, the wiki, the linkshell hall. There's plenty here to utilize to meet people who'll be along your lines in terms of RP. Also, make sure to take a look at the Calendar for any events that might be happening on Gilgamesh when you're free, some of them require invites, some of them are just walk up, and chances are all of them will be enjoyable! Make sure to ask any questions you might have, Rock who posted before me is quite the wealth of knowledge and i'll do my best to answer any questions you have. Best of luck in Eorzea!
  22. Yes please! I agree in that creating a "side canon" would allow flexibility. Perhaps using a forum vote for pieces that are a wider in scope? This could work along the lines as the "Duskwight Clan" system on the wiki, with some changes of course, but a list of agreed upon works. I also like the idea of pulling from IRL books, "All about Birds, an Eorzean guide to winged dangers." Just spit balling ideas, I think there's a lot of niche room as well which can be nice. Not everyone will read every tome in the Sacrarium so we can afford to have a few more whimsical texts.
  23. Hello Lilith and welcome to the RPC, If you have the chance and would like to get an idea of what kind of groups are out there right now I suggest taking a look at the "linkshell hall" on the above bar (it includes free companies, but most have linkshell options.) As well as the forums of course. Make sure to ask any questions you have, check out the wiki, maybe hop into an event or two thats happening. (Such as this weekend.) its more than alright to learn as you go. You can touch base with most people through a tell or just a walk up and chat. A few people even tag themselves in their search info (me included). Side note, nice to see another progression player, though I haven't made much progress in 2.0. Hope to see you around Eorzea!
  24. Greeting Aureliya, You mentioned scouring the forums and the wiki which is an excellent start. Please feel free to ask questions and comment, there's usually some one who is willing to discuss what can seem even the most minuscule detail. Which I find heartening. I'm familiar with having a WoW background, and its nice to see more people who have played AD&D (i'm in a 3.5 kingmaker right now, wheee~). So you'll likely be fairly comfortable with the technical ins and outs. Hope to see you in Eorzea before too long, you'll have plenty of new things to see and people to meet. This likely sounds trite but please remember not to get swept up in someones pace, things can get a bit rushed and you might end up missing some small bits of the world that (for me) make it flourish. And with that I go back to fishing :chocobo:
  25. Hello Goodfellow, to start i'll provide you with this link to the wiki literature. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Literature I quite agree with you. I would be enthused to find a set of established literature to pour into and pull from, or at least reference. Which unfortunately seems not to be the case. To be honest I am working on a couple of projects, one among them will be a book, from which I will provide a few key excerpts. (The main topic is a study in the changes of flora and fauna since the decent of Dalamund, I had many personal notes from my 1.0 adventures, found myself going over them with corrections in 2.0 and decided to make it in character.) I would be ecstatic to find a similar project in the works, or if you fancy it, some collaborative effort could be made. At the moment I am making in roads to finding an escort or two to accompany me into some of the more hostile lands and do a bit of dirt digging for me, but it simply hasn't been my focus. Excellent idea how ever. Please let me know if there is anything I can clarify, or any questions.
