Hmm, well I think it could be interesting, particularly depending on what city you decided to center in (if any.) Going for Gridania would put you in contact with Conjurey and the Padjal which have an interesting history, and while I don't want to spoil anything, going through the quest line as well as finding some one IC to tutor you would provide an interesting experience, you could reflect on the quests with the person you come to learn from. Or perhaps Limsa might serve better, I was considering the point "seeing magic" that would influence you interacting with some one would be more likely in places where it has constructive uses, and while I dearly love Ul'dah, there aren't many going around throwing fire (thankfully). Where as Limsa would be able to provide a setting for you to interact due to the ability to use the Arcanist/Scholar pets as the "Magic" you become interested in (if that sounds along the lines of what you might like.) This is assuming you'd be starting without much competency in the Aetheric arts yourself, if you wanted to assume you already had some experience in that field that open up the location you could take a look at. Apakulla (sp?) Falls in Gridania would be an interesting choice, it is where Arcanists who attain the rank of Summoner speak with their teacher to begin the rituals required to call forth the EGIs' that they use. (Perhaps a place to lurk in search of some one eye catching.) Hmm, food for thought I suppose. Did you have any magic you wanted to focus on first or any idea of what kind of person you wanted to learn from? (the Bookish researcher, the practical application user, the restless delver?)

Greetings Madda, As a note, perhaps there might be a lack of replies due to being unsure what you'd like recommendation or validation on. The General idea of being a younger character seeking tutelage in the wide world isn't unheard of but perhaps some aren't sure exactly what kind of magic your character is interested in, or the content of personality to work with. Either way, perhaps you'd like to take a look at a few organizations. (i'll put a quick blurb after each link, but please read their entries as they do a far better job than I ever could of capturing the nuance of their ideas and goals.) http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=5317 May interest you, twelve knows it interest me, a little more inclusive of character roles, at least to my eyes. Affording a mix of the go-getters, the readers, (the pumpkin eaters) and the monetary enthusiasts. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=3321 Is centered around the scholarly aspect and enjoys a structured, formal, environment. While I don't know FreelanceWizard IC, I know of him and is known fondly by the people i've spoken to. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=4241 If you desire a formalized ranking system and various duties. To be honest I don't know much about them, there are how ever branches for each main city, I linked to Ul'dah, because Ul'dah is awesome, you can of course take a look at the Limsa and Gridania branches. That covers the main ones off the top of my head. Thaliak knows i've missed one, two or maybe a half dozen, but no fear some one will be along to correct me or chime in with their own additions if I made too grievous an error. Feel free to ask any follow up questions you might have, the idea of "Student in training" is interesting, it does afford a lot of opportunities to grow the character and form relationships with the people you encounter. Best of luck!

Thalia Nbolo.Thief, burgular and infiltrator.
Olofantur replied to Thalia93's topic in Player Directory
Welcome to the RPC website Thalia, As a member of the Driftwood coast it sounds like you already have a fair bit of support. But if you'd like another group to get in touch with I recommend: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=3116 Which serve as the OOC channel for Gilgamesh Rpers (Hosted by Rock, iirc.) If you'd like some reading to get to know the people or groups you might run into "the Lantern" is an IC publication linked in the bar above and the Wiki provides pages on a whole host of characters, places, and things. There's also the Calendar which host a number of events you might be interested on Feel free to throw any questions you might have at the forums or here, we're a friendly lot who will usually be able to scrounge up a bit of information on anything. Hope to see you in Eorzea! -
Greetings Chesabell, and welcome to the RPC, For OOC communication in general I highly recommend checking out: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=1902 But as an EU player specifically i'd also take a look at: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=3026 For OOC coordination and getting to know people. Aside from that remember that this sites resources are open for anyone to use, from Wiki character profiles where you can learn a thing or two about some one before or after you meet them, to the Lantern, an IC publication. If you have nothing penned into your schedule right now you could take a look at the Calendar, the coming weekend has a couple events you might find way to attend. As a note, some require you to speak to the host before hand, others are open to all characters at any time, they're all a great deal of fun, some just using a more structured styling. Hope that helps provide a bit of information about the community. We're a friendly lot and I don't think you'll have a hard time finding a group or conversation that might interest you. See you in Eorzea!

What Would An Information Broker Know About You?
Olofantur replied to Tiergan's topic in RP Discussion
Hello Tiergan, Just in case you are unfamiliar, the Player Character pages in the RPC Wiki will occasionally have a "Rumor" section, usually close to the bottom, with various teirs of difficulty in hearing the rumor. Since these are already assigned by the given Roleplayer perhaps you could use them to fluff out your database of knowledge on a given character. (Of course they stand to be in the more common way than information a professional broker might have, but I thought it a possible start.) Cheers! -
Greetings and Welcome to the RPC Kheni'to, As others have stated your preparation is admirable, If you'd like to compare notes of your own "RP Essentials" Eva did a wonderful write up on Roleplaying posted here: (you can also find it linked on the Home page) http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=1770 Apart from that, GW2 seems to be a place a few people are making the jump from and that I hope you transition as smoothly to FFXIVs' style of play, though by your time in game I would assume it went fairly well. Feel free to avail yourself of the sites resources, such as the player filled and edited wiki, a host of character information as well as some expanded lore. There is the Lantern, the local IC publication. The Calendar hosts a good chuck of the public events you might find occurring (each one should be tagged with the server/date/time/requirements of entry). And lastly the Linkshell hall, a great resource to locate/identify/communicate with the groups you might find out in Eorzea. Even if you have no intention of joining one I find it still good to know who I might run into and how I might interact with them. I took a gander at your other thread so it looks like you're already confident in putting questions out there, hope to see you out in Eorzea!

Samples looking good Prido, here's hoping for another push to the new goal! -
Welcome to the RPC Greider, Two great in house tools created by RPC staff are the welcome page, that goes over most major tools you can find on the site briefly and list a few of the key players. Found: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/misc.php?page=welcome There's also the RP Handbook that can give you a general overview of RP in FFXIV, though much of the information is tailored towards new RPers and not people who have experience in the field, a few points are worth at least a gloss over. (done by the ever helpful Eva.) http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=1770 As an aside, the RPC has lots to offer and people who are always willing to discuss any ideas you might have, so if a question arises feel free to ask it here or even message me in game if you prefer. The Forums are an conglomeration of talks on nearly every field. the Wiki hosts everything from Lore to Character profiles (some made more for private notes, other public reading.) There's the Calendars list of events, the Lantern an IC publication as well as the Linkshell hall which is very useful for identifying which groups you might encounter in the lands of Eorzea. You can of course drop a message on the linkshell posting itself and in some cases a separate website or in game meeting is recommended, but the members can provide more details. I think that covers most of the major areas. You as Navisse says have picked a fine platform for your return, and I hope that you (and perhaps the soon to be Fiance.) Find something worth fighting for in Eorzea, there is much land to cover and many people to meet. Best of luck out there!

Nice one Sibo. I was around Bronze lake when the weather turned so I headed south... My only consolation, is that the Garleans had to suffer with me. -
Every group i'm in just calls any objective that one works through "content" where as End-game/Raids are called end-game/raids, a particular sub-set of content. No shortening is necessary, in this discussion I have the capacity to pay attention to things for a long time. Thats opinion, so no one can really refute it, I enjoy Raiding, but I also know some people who don't do it more than once for the story element, then go about other activities. So the "Current end-game content" is the only "MMO" aspect of the game? I disagree on that point, but opinion like before. Yes but outside the story line there is no in-game reason for the Dungeons to exist. As well, I was addressing the line that the story was "being shoved down your throat" in such a way that you don't actually have to read the story, you can just kill X, skip the cut scene and then kill Y, of course you still have to do the quests to unlock it. Just as you have to do the quests to unlock jobs... How would you address opening content in a logical order without using quests as a gating system? I just think SE had a firm idea in mind and unabashedly made this game with a strong and central story element. On the topic of "must cater to a wider audience" i'm unsure as to the validity of that statement. XI, GW1, and Eve are all arguably niche games that have done fine for themselves. Or rather did fine, its been a while since GW1 so I can't speak to the stability of it these days.

Welcome to the RPC Vincoix! Happy to introduce a fellow Duskwight to the land, over there are the Forums, a land of good times, good discussion, and screen shots that would make a Roegadyn Blush. To the right of that you'll find the Wiki, player made and edited, largely about characters and the world around us. To the right of THAT you'll find the Lantern, a charming little IC publication put forward by the community. Now, if you'll turn to your left you'll find the Calendar, a list of events and gatherings through out Eorzea, some public, some requiring contact before hand. Behind that, no keep going... a bit further, is the Linkshell hall, where Free companies and Linkshell vie for your affection with all manner of inciting incentives. Remember on your journey that the RPC is a resource by roleplayers, for roleplayers, questions, comments, concerns, feel free to voice them. OH and don't accept cookies from the Moogles, they're a bunch of drunks. But on a more serious note, feel free to poke around and get familiar, there's plenty to see and lots to do.

http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=4668 Is a good thread to check out. To be honest, pretty much any where with tables and some seating. Fall Ground Float, Camp Drybone, of course results may vary depending on time of day, but outside of the main cities its usually tavern, or interesting landmarks. Oh I would be negligent not to include taking a look at the http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=4812 Though not always the most active it does serve for people who might be popping by with no prior engagements.
-
I think you are right (perhaps unintentionally) in mentioning the shift from gaming to RP, at least in 1.0 (and other games) the same pattern seems to occur, many RPers who also want to reach end-game, refocusing on RP when they hit the content plateau they feel comfortable with. Which is awesome to see, though it makes me wonder how much it will fluctuate with new content being introduced. I know that I hardly had RP time when I was trying to progress with the Good King and the White Raven.

Welcome to Balmung then, There's Wineport Wensdays occuring today, as well as a few events on the 9th if you care to poke your head in (The Coffer&Coffin being open, and the Winter speed-meet requiring you to notify the host.) Both are up on the calendar if you'd like to take a peek. Hope to see you in Eorzea before long!

Yes, the Alpha and Beta forums both got quite out of control, I was hoping for a more current/ongoing one, I am loathe to necro a thread. Ah well, thanks for the links anyways perhaps the issue will be addressed in a live letter. EDIT: as an aside, have they mentioned in the past live letters a thought on addressing the limitation of the instance hosting server by purchasing more? unlikely that it will happen soon, but that was my understanding for the limitation. Perhaps your content =/= story comment is the crux of it, for me the story is the key piece of content, if I only wanted tab-targeting mechanics and roleplay I have other options, but none with the backdrop and narrative of Primals, Garleans and the like. The seemingly and sometimes literal shark jumping is one of a dozen reasons WoW and I parted. The dark, drama-ish narrative is what (aside from social events) is what keeps me interested. As an aside, we can all agree that you can skip the story line right? you can cancel out of cut scenes and right click spam through chat...
-
While I don't entirely agree with SE's decision, the End-game content is directly tied into the story line so I can kind of understand their views, as far as the internal lore of the world is concerned, behind gating the content, perhaps they think "well the raids are a part of the story, and to see the end, you have to go through the beginning." Again, I don't really care if people are interested in the story, twelve knows you can right click and escape-cancel your way through it if you don't want to watch any cut scenes. But i've had enough people in Prae going "WHO IS THIS LAHABREA GUY ANYWAYS" to make me cringe.
-
"What do you mean you've never attuned to molten core?! GUYS we need to go through BRD again!" /sigh At least once it was over with you could just use the trick where you hop into the lava under the pedestal and zone in immediately. Kara, the past time zones, The Sunwell, Magister Terrace... I'd dearly love to be able to explore the nooks and crannies of the dungeons in ARR as you could, even in certain 1.0 ones. Heck, Tam-Tara had its own Aether crystal. I wonder if they would consider the option of introducing a synch-less time-less dungeon mode, perhaps removing chests/boss drops or anything else that could be exploited.. Anyone know if theres a thread on it at the official forums? Might be buried.
-
Ah yes, though with one miss click it can lead to "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to send you a friend request, I just thought your tunic was nice and wanted to take a look, not that I don't think you might not be a nice person but-" or maybe thats just me.. :cactuar:

Seconded, well all of it, but particularly this point.

Hello Caleb, its still a bit buggy, but http://xivmodels.com/ has a model viewer tool. at the moment the weapons can be iffy, and the loading takes a while, but aside from taking pictures or asking the person in game i've found it the most serviceable tool. If you're going to use it please take into account that it does not heed any limitations of class or "stacking" of objects. here's an example: http://xivmodels.com/?group/Mzk1MixpdGVtLDM1NTUsaXRlbSwzMDM1LGl0ZW0sMzM0NixpdGVt Hope that helps! I've got a pretty firm knowledge of most of the models if you're looking for something particular that you can describe. Edit: Ack, double post, good one S'anhu!

Eh, I enjoy it, a passionate community often produces the best results. And it certainly lends itself to promoting a stronger social cohesion, I can respect people with differing opinions who are passionate, but people who aren't invested in their own thoughts tend to bore me. A note about optimizing EXP gain from FATEs, the level of reward (bronze/silver/gold) is based on (for monster spawn FATEs, not turn ins or NMs, and even those to a certain extent) the amount of mobs that end up on your aggro table. by this I mean that a gladiator can stand around in dark devices spamming FLASH and get just as much reward as me spamming Blizz2. This also lends itself to partying since your allies tagging mobs adds to your contribution as well, particularly handy if you're a healer. Also, depends on what group you might be in but some will farm the DD area if the FATE spawn is taking too long. i've encountered a few who tele to Mor Dhona and back, but I haven't done the math for the FATEs there to see if its worth if post 45. Hrm, more food for thought I suppose.

As a note Miakoda, he's on Gilgamesh not Balmung, so you might not hear back from him.
