1. Ahh, I see, so more just a synopsis, like what you'd find on the dust jacket or back cover of a book. Fair enough! A very interesting means of adding flavor and immersion; I approve!
2. Oooh, now you have the writer in me curious! I could definitely see Syranelle penning some things for you, if she's found to be an acceptable writer. Is there an actual website/blog of publications or is it just hand-waved into existence? Inquiring minds want to know!
3. I'm completely down for random encounters! Or even "assigned" encounters by the Adders. I'm usually around for ungodly amounts of time in the evening, overnight, and early morning hours. You can add Syranelle Ironleaf to your Friends List, if you like for ease of finding me in-game. I look forward to crossing paths!
4. Syranelle gnawed on her lower lip, sliding the book aside. "What am I looking for in a contact? Well, first and foremost, I am currently doing research on all the various races and city-states of Eorzea, both present and past. I'm especially interested in the ruins in the Black Shroud and their ties to Gelmorra. Oh, what's that? Why...? Well, I'll only divulge my reasoning to the right contacts. We must all have our secrets, you know." The Elezen maid smiles faintly, emerald eyes hooded briefly by a fringe of dark lashes as she lowers her gaze. "Growing up in the wilds of Gridania, I haven't had much opportunity to explore the world-at-large; I stayed close to home, especially after the Calamity. It's only been recently that I've gone out into the world, perhaps to rediscover it. I'm no soldier, though, no warrior. I could probably do with someone to watch my back..." Notable Affiliations These can be used as points of contact. Syranelle is seen often at Mealvaan's Gate in Limsa Lominsa, coming and going as she borrows various books. The same can be said for the Azzarneth Ossuary in Ul'dah. Having done extensive healing-work for the Order of the Twin Adder, characters may have encountered her. She has only recently undertaken the study of plants with the Botanist's Guild in Gridania, using the knowledge found there to augment her healing ability. For more on Syranelle, visit her RPC Wiki Page! What I'm Looking For... Mostly just friendly folks to Roleplay with. I'm not particular as to character race or background, though their interactions with Syranelle and how she reacts to them will ultimately determine their fate. I'm wholly an "organic" roleplayer; I've never liked the idea of scripted relationships or allegiances, rather letting them grow as they will based on what happens in roleplay. Long-term, short-term, I'm perfectly content with whatever time a person has to donate. I'm more than happy to play a bit part in plots and personal stories. However, don't expect me to play a villain, that's not in Syranelle's personality. (Nor am I fond of playing the villain, because I'm bad at it. ) Edit: Oh! I forgot to add... I'm also interested in a large, RP-friendly Free Company. My current FC is one I followed a friend to, but it's small and usually empty/dead during the times I play. XP What I'm NOT Looking For... I'm not looking for drama or people who can't keep Characters separate from Players. What happens in roleplay is just roleplay; it has no regard or reflection on you or me as people behind the keyboard. Please, keep that in mind. Exclusivity; I don't expect to be attached at the hip to anyone. I enjoy playing the game on my own at times, as well as being a social butterfly. I am OKAY with... In-character Romance. So long as you remember the aforementioned caveat of keeping IC separate from OOC. In Real Life, I'm a happily married woman. Roleplay is just roleplay. In-character Conflict. Again, see the IC=/=OOC caveat. Just because my character doesn't like or get along with yours doesn't mean I dislike you on a personal level. In-character Dungeons/Questing. I thoroughly enjoy mixing PVE and RP! I like using all of the world instead of just the city or specific taverns. I'm NOT OKAY with... Roll-based Combat. I find it boring. I'm sorry! That's just how I feel. If I want to play roll-based combat, that's what my D&D nights are for. For more about The Player Behind the Keyboard, see my Introduction Thread. If you have questions or would like to add me to your Friends List, please don't hesitate to contact me -- or leave your in-game contact below and I'll contact you!
5. I had a total brain-fail and for some reason planted it in my head it was 9pm Pacific and not Eastern, so I showed up entirely too late (midnight, Eastern)! The Harbingers that were still lingering were quite welcoming, though!
6. Problem: I don't know how to start/initiate contact with someone. Solution: Compliments! If you're standing around in an area actually listen/read the conversations going on around you. If you see someone being funny, entertaining, or otherwise engaging then send them an OOC tell and compliment them for excellent roleplay. I've found it rare that people will ignore a compliment. Once you've gotten their attention, then bring up the suggestion that you'd like to join in. More often than not, you'll find people more receptive to welcoming you into whatever they're doing. Or, if it's something you can't immediately join in on, they will usually be up for scheduling something later. Just a suggestion on how to break the ice without feeling like the Interrupting Cow.
7. Just reading through the last few posts I think this is less a "pet peeve" thread and more a general grousing thread about things we encounter in RP that we don't like. Either that or people don't really understand what a "pet peeve" is. A pet peeve is a MINOR annoyance that other people generally find acceptable that personally irritates an individual to a greater degree than others. I don't really consider god-moding, blatantly ignoring people, or sexual harassment (IC or OOC) all that minor. XP Perhaps this ought to be renamed to the "Roleplay Venting Thread" instead.
8. Is this LS still active? (I only ask because the creator of the thread hasn't posted in here since January'ish?) I'm a pretty hardcore night owl (usually around in-game from 7pm until 8am US Central time) so this seems like a pretty good fit for me!
9. Thank you both very much! I've enjoyed everything the game itself has had to offer thusfar, so I'm really looking forward to delving into the various stories that are out there!
10. Greetings and Salutations! First off, let me say that I've been playing FFXIV for about a month now and I'm thoroughly enjoying the game and community. I've been lurking here on HRC for just about as long, though I am branching out with a post or two now and then. My Roleplay Background I come from a fairly extensive roleplaying background, having started my roleplaying career early with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and pretty much every subsequent edition since (except for you, 4th Edition...) That love of roleplaying means that my video game collection is almost exclusively RPG titles; my reigning favorites being Skies of Arcadia for the Dreamcast (yes, I own one of those), Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar: Eternal Blue, and -- of course -- the Final Fantasy series of games. I have experience in a wide variety of tabletop RPGs as well, including but not limited to: Dungeons & Dragons (1.0 - 5.0 Editions), Superheroes/Villains Unlimited, G.U.R.P.S., Deadlands, Star Wars RPG (d6 Edition), Legend of the Five Rings, Seventh Sea, Ironclaw... and probably a few more titles I'm forgetting. Needless to say, I've played a lot of them and dabbled in a whole lot more. So, I'm no stranger to wide-ranging storylines or even playing the bit part when it's needed. Also within my background is a lot of forum-based roleplaying and cooperative writing for various communities. This makes me well-versed in "sharing the story" as it were as well as being able to contribute to a story without needing to take the limelight. In fact, some of my best roles have been as a supporting actress. To go along with all of that, I'm also an aspiring author and frequent writer/blogger. It means that I care very much about the quality of the roleplay moreso than the quantity or frequency of it. My dearest love within roleplaying is character development. I enjoy those stories and plotlines that change a character and mold them into something different, for better or for worse. Even with all this under my belt, though, I am an absolute newbie when it comes to Final Fantasy XIV and the lore of Eorzea, particularly with my chosen character in an Elezen Duskwight. I'm more than willing to learn and take constructive criticism to build a more believable character. That said... My Character Background I've always been a proponent of building a loose foundation rather than a rock-solid, impermeable background. As I mentioned before, I love Character Development, so I leave my background fairly loose and somewhat vague. This is intentional just in case there ever comes a point that another Player Character would like to be part of my character's history it can be written in with a minimum of fuss. Now, given that the canon of the current world has the Calamity set at five years ago (and that most folks only have rough memories since) this works in my favor. Syranelle, at present, began life after the Calamity as an Elezen Ranger that went topside to scavenge for food, supplies, and necessities. She might have even committed a few acts of banditry in the process, as so many Duskwight seem known for. However, in her forays she came across an old tome that spoke of Gelmorra, a place where the Duskwight might have once dwelt in peace. Given the general animosity toward her people even in this Era, Syranelle often attempts to pass herself off as a Wildwood Elezen while she continues her search for more information about Gelmorra. In essence, she becomes a Scholar. A Bit About Me, the Player I am a 37-year old medically disabled woman (I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, for the curious) and I have entirely too much free time on my hands most of the time. So, you'll find me in-game a lot which makes me an ideal person to roleplay with or to run around questing or FATE farming with, particularly if you play late at night. My hours of operation are typically 7pm (US Central Time) until 8am, though I often take breaks to watch movies, play other games, or do some writing/drawing. In pretty much all the games I play, I have a chronic case of "helperitis" -- I enjoy helping people and pitching in where I can. I've been known to donate in-game funds, items, or just that most precious commodity of time to people in large quantities. (Sometimes even to my own detriment. ) Beyond that, I tend to be a pretty easy-going personality, though I tend to steer clear of drama and any potential drama, particularly of the OOC variety. I have enough stress in my life without adding to it from a video game. Beyond that, everything else is subjective, to be liked, loved, or hated by each person on an individual level. So, getting to know me is probably your next best option! (Congratulations on making it this far! You earn: "The Great Wall of Text-troduction I" Achievement!)
11. Entry Three A Little Bit of Mystery Ala Mhigo. It’s where the Highlander gardener claimed to be from. Although, by looking at him it was clear he wasn’t any ordinary gardener either. Though our encounter was brief, I find myself filled with myriad questions, for the whispers I’ve heard of Ala Mhigans upon the streets of Ul’dah have been less than flattering. Yet, I saw nothing contemptible in the man I met tonight. I must needs learn more of this Ala Mhigo. A few gentle inquiries pointed me back to Ul’dah as the best source of material and I did find a few books cloistered away within the Arrzaneth Ossuary. Yet, even with these I found myself laden with more questions than answers. It did afford me a brief interlude with Sa’vern or, rather, his new client, a woman who only introduced herself as Skyler. She seemed quite curious as to my relationship with the Miqo’te, but I assured her that I was merely a former client. A small lie, perhaps, but I was able to give her a convincing enough referral on his martial skill. Mostly, I was just parroting things Sa’vern had told me the night previous, but none shall be the wiser – not from me, at least. It was interesting to find him so taciturn, given how much he conversed with me the night before. Perhaps this is how he is when he’s “on duty” not that it’s surprising, merely an interesting dichotomy. With my recommendations set, though, I did not linger overlong with the Miqo’te and his client. After all, I had an Ala Mhigan mystery to solve.
12. Entry Two Unexpected Tales The night began one way and ended, unexpectedly, in another. I wasn’t sure what to make of Sa’vern when I first encountered him. He seemed not unlike so many knights-errant that I’ve encountered in my travels: hidebound by his sense of duty, viewing himself only as a tool of the people. It made me wonder if he had known any other life than war or lands in conflict. He spoke briefly only of family long-since dead and spoke longer still of his affinity for keeping people at arm’s length. Yet, despite that, we spoke for quite some time about various things and finding a mutual respect for the way each of us viewed the world. There was something about him that seemed so desolate, as if few dared to look past the armored countenance to see the man beneath. Even though he said he preferred it that way, I had difficulty believing that was true. A man who desires nothing of others would not have reached out to me, struck up conversation with me as he had. He could easily have ignored me. So when I mentioned I might have some martial skill – with a bow that was not present – he challenged me to a duel, merely to test my strength, he said. And to keep himself in practice. Given that I had stopped with archery long ago, I could only meet his challenge with my skills with the aether. Even then, I hesitated because there had to be more to this than merely testing himself. My lapse led to my defeat which wasn’t entirely unexpected. I was but a fledgeling yet with this spellcasting ability, so my combat senses really only came into play when my life was on the line. I knew it wasn’t here. Afterward, I fully expected him to dismiss my ability as soldiers are often wont to do to my ilk, but he didn’t. We spoke again for some time and I revealed to him things about myself that I’d long since kept secret and for good reason. Duskwight are still reviled in many circles, so much so that I oft lie and say I am a Wildwood. With the good fortune of my coloration, few ever say me nay on the matter. Yet, as Sa'vern spoke of his own exile from his people, I felt a kinship with the stalwart Miqo'te that demanded the truth. So I told it to him – and waited for the revulsion and dismissal. It never came. Instead, we continued to spend the evening together where he surprised me in more ways than one and I learned more about the Miqo'te than I ever had from books. 13. Since you made a specific mention about my peeve (the usage of would), the only thing I can tell you from my personal perspective and experience is that, no, I don't think anyone is "wrong" for doing it or that my way is right or better. Do I find it irksome, like nails on a chalkboard? Sure. Will I avoid roleplayers who prefer to type in that style? Not in the least. I've roleplayed with people who have difficulty with the English language, be it through personal barriers or language barriers. What matters most to me is the effort applied. As long as the person appears to be genuinely trying to RP (even if they're "trolling" or misbehaving) I will certainly give them the benefit of the doubt. You're right, though, no one should come into this thread viewing it as what to do or not to do in roleplay, because everyone is different and it's all subjective. Roleplay with the people you enjoy and avoid the people that you don't. That has and always will be the mode by which I operate. It doesn't matter to me if you're good at spelling/grammar or bad at it, good at roleplay or bad at it. As long as I enjoy being around you and interacting with your character, then it's all gravy.
14. One of my biggest pet peeves in roleplay is the usage of would. Roleplay in game is present tense because the action is happening now, not later. The argument I most often receive is that it's passively "asking permission" to perform an action, leaving room for your RP partner(s) to react. You can do the same thing in present tense, though, you may have to be more descriptive in an effort to create visual or tonal cues for others to react to (like we do in real life.)
15. OOC comments welcome and encouraged! IC Meta-gaming with this knowledge, however, is not! Read more in-character excerpts at http://ironleaf-rp.tumblr.com Entry One Even the Rose Withers Ishgard… A place of insurmountable beauty trapped within the clutches of the depths of winter, where every breath threatens to freeze the heart betwixt one beat and the next. A place so filled with its own sense of righteousness that the weight of it fills the air. Yet, as I have learned to my woe during the course of my studies, things of beauty are not meant to last. Does not even the rose wither? There is nothing in this world that is eternal. All that there is to the brevity of our lives is to seeing that what we have built endures for as long as it can. Perhaps that is why I search for the answers that I do. Something of my people… nay, myself, must be made to endure. I would not have us go into the light of the Crystal as nothing but brigands and sellswords; the detrius of a wasted, lost people. I would look for our redemption for all my life long, so that when we return to the aether from whence we came, it can be with spirits free of the shackles of our shame. Mayhap this, too, is but a dream. Something that shan’t endure any longer than the exhalation of my final breath – but it is something I believe worth pursuing.
16. Greetings and Salutations! I am new to the world of Eorzea, but I am a roleplayer of 25+ years experience in various formats, both online and off. I've been part of the roleplay communities in WoW, LOTRO, Aion, and Guild Wars 2. I'd love to be able to plant some seeds of contact and see what they grow into, if you'll have me! Character to Invite: Syranelle Ironleaf Many thanks in advance! I look forward to seeing folks in-game! Edit: Invite gotten! Thank you very much!
