What If Your Character's Backstory Didn't Happen?
13uddy replied to Sounsyy's topic in Character Workshop
My character would be in a similar boat, except I'm not sure he would have survived if he hadn't been found. In the unlikely event that he would survive without being found, the infections and fever would likely have scrambled his brain and left him in a bit of an unstable mental state. I wouldn't say psychotic or anything that severe, but he would probably behave more like an animal than a person. -
Being a farm boy, my guess is he would skip anything extravagant and go for something comfortable that reminds him of home. Cornbread, some steamed vegetables or vegetable stew and some form of jerky. Not elegant, but tasty and a reminder of better times.

I have a possibly bad habit (depending on one's point of view) of reacting in character to people that type that way and ask things like "Are you having a stroke?" even if they are not in character themselves. I don't mind if someone is sending a quick message in shorthand while they are in the middle of some complex situation where they need focus and to keep the keyboard free. But if someone is just standing around a safe area or trying to RP in nothing but shorthand? Yeah, I'm going to get a twitch or three and respond in some smart-aleck manner.

Agreeing with this. Also: I'm one of those people that is practically almost always in character, but that is just my personal preference and I don't expect everyone to be the same. If I know someone who wants to RP but needs a setup or something, I suggest we meet up at a specific place at a certain time, but I leave details fairly vague. I think of it like when you make plans to go hang out with a friend, but have no immediate plans other than "hang out with friend" and just let it build from there. If it is someone I don't know IC, I'll similarly offer a few vague suggestions if they need a reason to start interaction. For instance, I might suggest "I'll be at (location) at around (time), maybe you could say you saw him drop something and have been trying to catch up to return it?". I don't like to pre-plan the whole thing too often (I prefer the spontaneity of on-the-spot freeform RP), so I leave a lot of it open to interpretation for them to go at their own pace. Otherwise, I just let it happen when it happens. I've had plenty of great RP friends over the years that I only had the chance to RP with sporadically for one reason or another (such as both of us having some involvement in heavy RP groups that didn't exactly interact), but every so often we found a way to make it work. One of those friends and I even went so far as to become RP "pen pals" of sorts and would send in-character messages in the form of letters to each other during the stretches where we just couldn't get together to RP.

I'm not sure there is any in-game equivalent to hard rock, but anything lively (preferably with a good beat, but not required). The kind of music that even if you don't feel like dancing might still make you bob your head or tap your foot without realizing it.

I feel the same about pretty much everything before 14 years ago, and a decent amount of stuff since. My first online RP experience (aside from some brief visits to some AOL RP chatroom) was this really odd forum superhero RP that involved an ongoing situation akin to DC Comics "Crisis on Infinite Earths" where worlds were bleeding into each other from across various established superhero settings as well as some original creations. Looking at some of my old posts is like watching a young child trying too hard to tell jokes, but they keep messing up the lines and skewering the joke so badly that it is funny for completely different reasons than the joke itself.

I'm honestly surprised that I'm not more in to DCUO solely for the fact that I can actually play as a Green Lantern (my favorite superhero idea), but while I do pop in now and then, I can't seem to stay interested for longer than short spans of time. It isn't a bad game overall or anything like that, I just can't seem to stay interested for too long. That said, I recently bought the Rage powers (had some spare SC from subbing to EQ2 and there was a sale) and I'm trying to think of a fun weapon to pair with it. I'm leaning toward either shield or two-handed to start with since I've enjoyed other pairings with those weapons.

Not so much something that happened to me, but still something that made me very, very happy today! I just found out that my absolute all-time favorite Super Sentai series, Dekaranger, is going to be getting a new movie!!! http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/powerrangers/images/5/53/Dekaranger10years.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150703124147[/img] Unfortunately, my screech of delight frightened my grandpa who stopped by to see if I needed anything from the store.

What future game releases are you most looking forward to?
13uddy replied to Dravus's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Never heard of the game before this, but now my interest is certainly piqued! -
I was feeling nostalgic, thinking about an old friend and started listening to what we listened to back in our late teens. xsAY8EtQ3J0

I second this. Don't overthink it. It isn't that much different than forum RP, at least not to me. The biggest difference is that your responses are quicker paced and often a bit shorter, but you are still taking the same basic concepts into account when you are playing the character. You still try to think of responses and actions that are appropriate to your character, you still think about details and all those things you would do in forum RP, you are just doing it in a slightly different way.

Not too long ago, I decided to watch a few past seasons of Power Rangers on Netflix that I either liked or that I hadn't seen. Then, after watching Power Rangers SPD, I decided to once more watch my favorite Super Sentai series, Dekaranger. And, as happens every time I watch it, I'm compelled to listen to this song about once a day. Zjw5jRCcfMg ... I need help.

Depends where he would live in the real world. Ideally, I'd see him as working at (or possibly running) a comic and hobby shop or a large bookstore of some kind. With his interest in heroes, myths and folklore and the like, it seems feasible that he would find a job where he would have ready access to material pertaining to those subjects. However, if he lived in an area like mine where neither of those things are available (the closest is several hours drive away), I could see him in one of three jobs. - Farm supply or hardware store employee. He grew up on a farm (not unlike my own childhood in a small farm town), so he would know what is what and would likely be able to decipher what a customer is talking about when they come in not knowing the proper name of what they are looking for. - Kitchen assistant in some restaurant (not fast food). Before anyone says "Isn't that just a fancy way of saying dish washer?", it depends where you work. When I had that job, it also meant I helped with food prep, and I can see that being something he would enjoy doing without the pressure of being one of the actual cooks. - Odd home jobs. I know this is vague, but it is something I did with my uncle that was sometimes construction, sometimes repair, sometimes pressure washing, sometimes paving driveways and a bunch of other little things. I figure since he grew up on a farm, he probably also had to help repair his own home and helped out with neighbors and the like, so he'd have the know-how to do all sorts of things that people need done but won't or can't do themselves.

People have already answered better than I could, but I figured I'd add my 2 gil. Really, as long as you aren't going out of your way to break or ignore lore, then go for it. I might be a bit biased, though, as I've built the bulk of my character's pre-game history around an area that doesn't technically exist within the given locations we can visit in the game. I've tried crafting it in such a way that it feels like it could really exist somewhere on the overall map somewhere between the cracks of the locations we can actually visit within the game. It isn't in some far off land nobody has heard of, just a small farming village and the surrounding area that is far enough away from any major hubs that visiting them wouldn't be common (maybe a once or twice a year thing for supplies and possibly trade), yet not so distant that they wouldn't hear news now and then or have an occasional visitor passing through on their way to or from such places.

Jandelaine might be too obvious an answer, but you have to admit he's pretty. Maybe Wymond from Ul'dah?

Differences and similarities between you and your character
13uddy replied to 13uddy's topic in Fun Prompts
I can't speak for anybody but myself (and possibly my best friend since she agrees with this), but no matter how hard I may try to make a character that is completely different from me, something still seeps in. Even if it is something minor, like maybe they have a weakness for cute baby kittens and bunnies (which is hilarious when I'm playing a "bad" character), or maybe we just happen to have a similar like or dislike of something (anything from an object, a food, a color and so on). -
If you were in a movie as yourself (although it can be an exaggerated or fictionalized version, so feel free to put yourself in a spaceship or be an elf or something), what would be your perfect movie scene? Would you be the hero of an action film? Would you be the love interest in a romantic comedy? Would you be the comic relief in a coming-of-age teen comedy? For some reason, I always believed I would be the comic relief of a buddy comedy or road trip movie. My love of superheroes would be taken a bit to the extreme to the point of delusion. The ideal scene would be a confrontational scene, where some group wants to hurt my friends and I'll hold up something (a necklace, a toy, just something) and suddenly there would be a whole Power Rangers/Super Sentai/Kamen Rider henshin sequence. Lots of flashy effects and a colorful costume/armor forms around me while some techno theme plays in the background... ... and then the scene shifts to everyone just staring at a normal me standing there looking like an idiot as I'm imagining the whole transformation. I'm not THAT delusional in real life (at least, I hope I'm not!), but it sounds absurd enough to be something I could do.

I'm not too fond of the shirt choices either, at least in regards to my main character. But the shorts are perfect!

I thought the trailer was a tad on the cheesy side in some parts, but considering it is Deadpool, it works. Probably no surprise that my favorite scene in the trailer is when he's sitting on the bridge. I choked on my soda laughing about that.

I've got that same plan that I try whenever there is a maintenance (if I'm awake at the time just before or after maintenance). I actually have a notebook next to my computer desk with 10 alternate names just in case my first choice is taken (and if ALL of them are taken, then I can just start swapping first and last names from the list).

"Huh. Somebody is a lousy shot, there isn't even a target anywhere near h... Wait." Then he'll try to mentally list any possible reason someone would be trying to injure or kill him, most of them either comical or extremely trivial because he couldn't fathom that he has ever done anything bad enough to warrant that kind of aggression.

There were a few comments in other threads about how a character may be different or similar to the person playing them, and I'm curious if there are any major differences or similarities between your character and yourself. Similarities I think the two biggest similarities are that we both survived being very ill as children (I'm a cancer survivor and he was very weak and ill due to injury, dangerously high fevers, infections and other things) and that we are both fascinated with the mythology and folklore of our worlds. We also have a shared weakness for sweets. Granted, I do have some self control, but sometimes I may tell myself I'm only going to eat one or two squares from a bar of chocolate and end up eating half the bar (if not all of it). And then there is a somewhat similar sense of humor and general outlook. We both know things are or can be bad, we just try not to let it get us down. We aren't saints, but we would rather make someone laugh or smile instead of making them feel bad or starting an argument over something trivial. Differences There are several minor ones, but stuff like "he can walk without assistance" or "he can hear" don't really count to me. He loves spicy foods. Technically, I do enjoy spicy foods, I just can't have them due to my ulcers and other stomach issues. To be honest, this is a fairly common trait with my characters since I wish I could eat spicy foods without ending up in the hospital or just feeling very uncomfortable for days after. I'm living vicariously though them this way. He hates strong alcohol, mostly because he has a very, very low tolerance, but he also hates the taste. I, on the other hand, don't have a preference. I don't drink very often (mostly due to the same reason I can't have spicy foods), but I'm not that bothered by the taste of hard liquor. I actually enjoy the taste of some on their own rather than mixed with something. He's also a fair bit superstitious. Nothing too extreme, but there are a bunch of little things he believes that are usually nothing more than rumors or old beliefs. I can't honestly say that I'm not, but I'm not even close to the same degree that he is.

Reading, writing or sketching somewhere quiet, catching up on sleep or just going on a candy binge in secret (both because he's ashamed that he has no self control when it comes to sweets and because he doesn't want to share).

The upcoming Fire Emblem games top my list. Not just the Fate games, but also the Shin Megami Tensei/Fire Emblem crossover. Second on the list is Bravely Second, the sequel to Bravely Default. And while a long ways off, I'm eagerly awaiting the eventual release of City of Titans, a game that aims at being a spiritual successor to City of Heroes. I'm also extremely interested in LEGO: Dimensions. How could I not love a game that combines Doctor Who, Batman, Lord of the Rings, Scooby Doo, Portal and so many others into one game? -
With all my medical bills, medications costs and such, I don't get to try as many MMOs as I would like. Sure, there are plenty of free games out there, and I do play around in a few of them, but they usually don't hold my interest for too long for one reason or another. I've been playing EverQuest and EverQuest 2 on and off for the majority of their lifetimes. EQ was my first MMO that I had ever played substantially, and much like a first love, it will always hold a place in my heart. Most other games I play are either too infrequent to consider myself a regular player (DCUO, Digimon Masters Online, Champions Online, WoW, etc.) or have been shut down (Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes, etc.). And while not really an MMO so much as a virtual sandbox, I do visit Second Life frequently. Had a LOT of fun with various RP groups in there ranging from established franchise based RP (such as Star Wars, DC Comics and Harry Potter) to basic genre themed RP (such as Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Steampunk, etc.). I've also made some good friends that I met there that have either joined me in other MMOs or introduced me to games I might not have tried otherwise.
