  1. This is a very noble goal, and one that I tip my hat to all of you for striving for. I also, however, feel like this is a distinction that may be a very strong deciding factor for people. I, for one, do not want a server where RP becomes LOL!RP. I know that's not what you meant, but I feel like you are taking on the sacrifice of true quality story-driving RP so that people can get a better impression of RPers than we might have right now. Again, very noble. Just not something I can do. And it may not be something other people can do. I don't know. Then again, maybe some people don't see it as a sacrifice. Maybe it'll turn out that Gilgamesh is the "tavern RP" server. And some people thrive on that. As someone who doesn't, I'm glad that distinction is being made, though, because it is directing me away from Gilgamesh. If it turns out that this IS all about different RP styles, then kudos! I guess we'll just have to find out. "If it turns out that this is all about different RP styles" That is what its about I'm a heavy roleplayer and have always been. Heavy roleplay will have its place as will light roleplay and everything else in between. With all due respect, I think that your OP in your Beta forum thread doesn't convey this point of view at all. To me, it comes across as populist-style propaganda against Balmung, citing a list of supposed reasons why no one -- new and returning players alike -- should ever want to play on Balmung: "The fresh, perky new RP server!" (Balmung is old, tired, and worn out.) "Are you a storyteller? Do you want to try new things, themes, and spin a different kind of tale from the usual kill-the-wolf, avenge-my-father, I-was-molested-as-an-elf-child, dark-magick-made-me-do-it jibberjabber? Perhaps you've seen enough of that on some other server?" (This seems to be directly implying that the quality of RP and/or player-crafted stories on Balmung is poor, and Gilgamesh will somehow be better in this regard. I have no idea what the basis for this is.) "Then, do you want to come back to your home city and throw a celebratory in-character bash people will actually attend, because they like that sort of thing? I hope you've got one of those 50-in-every-class/job legacy characters to return to, 'cause those guys will have the raid content nuked so fast your head will spin. If you don't have an all-50's juggernaut waiting for 2.0, your choice is clear." (As said before, this entire thing -- if it's even a real issue at all -- will be moot in a few months. Personally, I only have two 50s, and a lot of fresh players will be 50 and pushing towards endgame content before early access is even over. I think this is a pretty short-sighted thing to cause a schism over.) "[balmung is] all well and good, if you want a pecking order in place when you arrive." (I have no idea what this is referring to. Is there a "pecking order," as in people who are in charge or hold an authority over others? Not that I've ever seen. And those that do try to assume a position of "RP authority" generally get seen for what they are, laughed at, and ignored. I've never seen this happen, either to myself or anyone else. Asserting this fact to new/undecided players seems intentionally deceptive and serves only to create animosity between the two server communities.) "Your choice is a no-brainer. You don't want to be the small fry in a pond full of legacy whoppers." (Same as before.) This basically reads to me as "Balmung's okay...if you want to be insignificant in the community, shunned, left in the dust, and ignored by elitists." None of which, I believe, is true. I understand that it's written as an advertisement which by nature are one-sided, but I dislike it for the same reason that I dislike political attack ads. It may be technically true (or not), but the effect on the community's health is a net negative regardless of the intent behind it. I'm all for supporting the Gilgamesh community for people who truly want to start a new community and/or get a fresh start. I could list off a relatively level-headed list of pros and cons for both servers, to help new players make as educated and informed of a decision as possible. But one-sided advertisements like this feel sort of dishonest and mean-spirited. We're all on the same side, here; why does this need to become so hostile? That's all. We should be helping people find the place that's a best fit for them in a forthright manner, and both sides should have the integrity to not slander competing servers. (It depresses me that I can even call them that.) It's role-play in a video game, that's all. Let's help people figure out where they might be happiest, and put aside our personal agendas long enough to do that. Come on, guys. We're all adults here. Nobody has done such things on this site in particular. What happens on the beta site is what happens on the beta site and that's it. Please understand that many of us who are heading to Gilgamesh who post -here- primarily are very diplomatic in talking about the pros and cons of both. Its not something new its something that we have always done. Slandering Balmung is not part of our interests. Its certainly not mine as I have friends going there and it was my original server choice. Lets not throw everyone into the same pot yes? It would be bad if we took some who have openly slammed or passive aggressively bullied players going to Gilgamesh instead of Balmung as representatives of the entire Balmung rp community wouldn't it? That would be just as wrong. Especially since it isn't the truth at all. People are excited and passionate and sometimes say things they shouldn't. It happens, things like this bring up heated conversation and I am sure that everyone has good intentions even if such intentions are not always written in the most welcoming of language. But I will also reiterate that we all are a community nobody is trying to stop anyone from going anywhere. Speaking for myself digging up my post history will show that I am pro rp community more than anything and not pro rp server. I don't feel that any server is better than the other. I only care about roleplayers playing in the same game. That's it. For me to be pro server is a bit weird. Your destination should not matter here, only the fact that you are genuinely interested in roleplaying. At least that's my opinion on it. Lets honestly not even have this conversation. We have enough issues already.
  2. Glad to have you! Oh and here is a treat for everyone. These are the people that we will be roleplaying with and getting to roleplay for the first time. Personally I'm very happy to see things like this http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/1da2ra/ffxivarr_roleplay/
  3. I just wanted to say welcome to those that are new and roleplaying with us on Gilgamesh! Second thanks everyone for their hard work seriously. Things are coming together people are getting excited and despite the unfortunate situations that occasionally come up things are moving forward. There is a lot to be happy about! Lets keep up the good work everyone! And keep those great ideas coming! Remember proactivity will help make Gilgamesh a great place to be for roleplaying! And for my lurkers please feel free to say hello! To a great future!
  4. Welcome to the site! Look forward to roleplaying with you and hope to see you at the Gilgamesh rp events!
  5. *nods* Agreed, I think the starting events will do a good job of that and I can't wait till people do more of them. Thank you for helping its really appreciated! Oh btw the Eozean Bounty Board will be running an event first before the Beach Party. I can't wait! So it will actually be the server's first big rp event and its will be a great rp event for new roleplayers to participate in. I hope someone runs an event during early access as well if possible. *hint hint* Eorzean Bounty Board Event
  6. lol sounds like you have a hard decision as I'm sure there will be better targets on Gilgamesh lol
  7. Like you I'm concerned but I don't want to cause any further confusion I just want to start the game already honestly. I mean I think people arre more worried than they need to be the only thing I can advise at this point is to try out both and see for yourself. As far as server lock goes well I think SE understands what they need to deal with. And as far as finding an alternate server I recommend labeling the post -Gilgamesh- so it doesn't get flooded with the same tired -why-questions
  8. Sorry but The only thing I lead there was my own guild and at one time being one of the leaders of the tavern guild I lead. I've also stated that I'm not the leader of anything many times. So please do tell.
  9. Thanks for your concern. Those who are terrified listen to this man he knows what he is talking about. Those who aren't see you on Gilgamesh. I simply won't run or be scared of some jerk behind a screen. Nope won't do it. See you in game and be sure to check out the beta week and launch week events! 1. I'm female. 2. I'm not afraid. I've ran with this people, I've done what these people do. I know what they are capable of and it's not an issue of being afraid, it's an issue of being constantly interrupted from what you like to do. Hell, come Vampire: The Masquerade I'm rolling with them again, but as I want to roleplay I will not be on the same server as them.. because I know what they do. No one wants their in game character name stolen - but it happened. No one wants their guild name stolen - but it happened. No one wants to have flying penis's interrupt their interview - but it's happened ( ), no one wants a bunch of trolls to take over their entire game - but it happened (EvE). This is what they DO and it's a very real concern, not one you can hand wave off as fear. Saying that it's fear waves me off as a concern troll and it's like I'm being talked down to quite frankly ("YOUR Afriad, but WE AIN'T AFRAID, you SCAREDY CAT") Edit: And, just so we're clear, I'm not someone who has ever said "Just roll on Balmung." I've always been on the side of new people, I've yelled at people who aren't on the side of new people, on here and on the Beta forums. I've tried to explain why people might not be comfortable rolling on Balmung over and over again. Forgive me I've always thought you were male. Secondly do you know how many times we are constantly reminded about Reddit and 4chan being there? Constantly! Trust me I hear it all the time. ALL the time. When we voted on the non legacy server I actually voted on Leviathan. Yep sure did and what happenened? Gilgamesh won. So I made a promise to support them because honestly I like the idea of playing with all new people. I met plenty of people who are staying on Gilgamesh during the betas who want to roleplay but don't come to this site. People who are from Reddir who want to try out roleplaying for the first time. That made me happy I want to stay there to build that place now. People will be roleplaying there if we of the rpc were there or not. So while I am grateful that the rpc has supported the vote that ended up with Gilgamesh being picked I am playing this game to support all roleplayers whether the are from the rpc or not. Balmung: is good already. I want to help out Gilgamesh BECAUSE it needs the help because of its circumstances and all of us going there are prepared to do what we have to ensure its survival. So when I read posts like yours for me its equivalent to taking the One Ring to Mount Doom to destroy it and being told I might die. As if I didn't know that could happen before I left my hobbit hole.....
  10. Have a poll. There is an rp community going to Leviathan also if people are that worried let's go there
  11. Thanks for your concern. Those who are terrified listen to this man he knows what he is talking about. Those who aren't see you on Gilgamesh. I simply won't run or be scared of some jerk behind a screen. Nope won't do it. See you in game and be sure to check out the beta week and launch week events!
  12. Square mentioned establishing an official server and has done nothing yet so who knows. As for right now there are two servers the RPC endorses which is Balmung, the original choice since 1.0 and now Gilgamesh the rp server for those who don't want to play on a Legacy server for whatever reason. Its really up to what you would like as a roleplayer. Balmung is established and people know it many just want to jump right into roleplay with an established known community of roleplayers. Gilgamesh is new and scrappy and needs to be built by great roleplayers looking to help. There is no right or wrong choice it just depends on what you are looking for in a server.
  13. I think the name matches the premise quiet well.
  14. The honestly look wonderful I cannot wait to play my Scholar alt.
  15. Excellent idea! Amaare is a former sailor and treasure hunter on the side he dips and dabbles into a few other areas, sometimes handling things for regular folk who need help whether its finding things for them, relocating family members, etc. At one time he had a boat that was destroyed during the Calamity he was pretty well known in Limsa Lominsa and to a lesser extent Vesper Bay due to his father who ran the treasure hunting business before him. The name of the business was called Priceless Treasures Inc. Their family came from a long line of treasure hunters, pirates, privateers and the like. Some who have known the family for a really long time know that they are not originally from Eorzea. Often times they would also hire mercs and adventurers to come along on these excursions. He is known for his antics and his womanizing and also as the now deceased Aizan Margolis's son. He may have had a relationship with someone at one time or an other whether semi serious or casual. He may a small amount of money from borrowing it to gamble and needs to pay it back. You may have accompanied him and his dad in the past on one of the treasure hunting excursions. If your character is a drinker you may be drinking buddies with him or have gambled with him. If your character is a beautiful woman you may have been hit on by him lol. Feel free to slap him upon seeing him for something he did the last time you were together lol (no stds though lol) If you are an older character you may know him as Aizan's crazy son. He grew up in Limsa and is a known face in Limsa more than anywhere else where he is relatively unknown. Currently he has been hanging out in Ul'dah due to losing the family boat. I am also quite open to having rival treasure hunters whether male or female and frenemies along with good friends. I would love to have rival treasure hunters who were rivals of his dad with their own respective businesses. He is also known for his way around a kitchen and great baritone singing voice almost equal to a Bard. Aizan used to sometimes stop at port and invite sailors on the ship for a fish fry and some drinking, card games and gambling. Amaare would cook the fish during these events and sing funny sailor songs. Those who may have known him as a child would know that he was mischevious and constantly got into trouble.
  16. Let me just tell you that as an older SNES era FF fan you won't be disappointed. I seriously would put the story that I've seen so far next to my personal favorites IV and VI. I think you will be -very- pleased.
  17. Welcome to the site! I think you are in a good place. Please feel free to ask any questions as well as there are a lot of very helpful people here.
  18. A fantastic and very warm story. I am always so envious of couples who rp together. Welcome to the site, feel free to ask any questions and I look forward to roleplaying with you.
  19. But...doesn't that make them a clique? Excluding someone just because they tend to keep to themselves? "Please understand I am talking about the jerks of the cliquey types. There is nothing wrong with keeping to yourselves but those who can be jerks about it bringing all sorts of negative behavior that leads to bad rp stereotypes, rp server deaths and the like? Yeah Rock Sandbourne doesn't like you because you do more harm than good. So go away."
  20. Who are you to stop them..?? You won't stand for it.. what will you do? Oust them from Gilgamesh? It's not your server.. o_O I can't believe you're saying what I think you're saying.. Its not about stopping them, no its not my server, but will I let it be known that being part of the community its not cool? Yes I will. Please don't put words in my mouth. But as someone who is seen as representing the server on this site. Yes I will gladly tell them that your ways are not welcome. We don't have to talk we don't have to like each other, but I won't lie to them either. No, its not cool, it doesn't make things better it makes them worse, and honestly I'd prefer not to see it. People can go where they want. but as someone who is trying to unify the roleplayers on the server, especially with two linkshells. No, I don't want to deal with them. If others are cool with them fine. But I'm not. And taking a quote from Freelance Wizards book, I hope the community as a whole feels the same that is coming to Gilgamesh. Because I too am of the school that certain types of attitudes should be slashed and burned when it comes to roleplay. Clques are non inclusive and can shun other or completely lock them out. Please understand I am talking about the jerks of the cliquey types. There is nothing wrong with keeping to yourselves but those who can be jerks about it bringing all sorts of negative behavior that leads to bad rp stereotypes, rp server deaths and the like? Yeah Rock Sandbourne doesn't like you because you do more harm than good. So go away. A good example of this already happening is the shunning of the Reddit and 4chan communities. Both have groups interested in roleplay but are already being shunned by some in the roleplay community. This ain't cool, it just ain't so if someone has a problem with me not wanting to deal with people who lock people out of roleplay for ANY reason and I'm talking about people who genuinely WANT to roleplay well guess we just aren't talking anymore. Trust me you won't be missed. And in my book that's great that they want to keep to themselves. Limitless Sky and Coalition OOC will be glad to not hand you a pearl. No it isn't my server, but am I going to try my best to lead by example? Yep
  21. "I can't speak on what groups are organizing outside of the RPC"/"So while its not impossible I can honestly say I won't stand for it"
  22. Cheers! Summed up my thoughts more eloquently than I could. >>; Balmung can be intimidating, but at the same time, the 'old-timers' from 1.0 are already likely outnumbered by the amount of new RPers (and non-RPers, so 1-10 won't be that lonely, that's for sure..) joining us there. Cliques are going to exist anywhere you go, and are likely already forming within the Gilgamesh community as well. You just have to take that step, and trust that you will be welcomed--which will be the case on either server. In the end it's your choice. "Cliques are going to exist anywhere you go, and are likely already forming within the Gilgamesh community as well." Nope Now I can't speak for whatever groups are organizing outside of the rpc, but as far as here. I don't -do- clique rp. Never have never will. Ran a tavern in GW2 had days where we welcomed new roleplayers to come join us for their first rp experience. Place was called The Golden Sun. My team then knew that clique rp was not allowed and it was the reason why we did that tavern running rp in the first place. So while I am saying its not impossible, I am definitely saying that I won't stand for it at all and show you the door if you are involved with what me and others are doing to facilitate a non elitist environment on Gilgamesh. We don't need cliquey rpers and don't want them - at all. They are bad for the community as a whole and if I am biased towards anything its concerning them and their ilk. You are a cliquey roleplayer? well then go away. Don't let the door hit you where the good lord....yeah *Puts on his Edna Mode voice and does the George Jefferson door slam on the cliquey roleplayers* No Cliques!
  23. Your decision should be based on what you want to do as a roleplayer What I mean is this Balmung will have an established group yes, but it will have more NEW people than old. Even if some of the old community turn out to be, well not so great you will have so many new people to flood them out. If you want most of my friends are going to Balmung so I can shoot you some pms on who to talk to if you are shy and want to meet people to hang out with. Balmung offers the advantage of having a foundation. Its been there. people know it. Most roleplayers on this site are going there. It will be easier to meet people who are going there now because of this site. The numbers from here back it up and its a great place for a new shy roleplayer to go because there is less startup involved as far as rp. And then there is Gilgamesh, the wildchild, the new one the sometimes unwanted one. Its going to have two communities that carry bad reps with them. Reddit and 4chan. Many roleplayers are downright scared of these communities due to fear of griefing and past experiences which I more than understand. I'm a griefer fighter by nature so dealing with them doesn't bother me personally as they will always be there, even on Balmung. But I know a secret *whispers* There is a huuuge number of people who want to roleplay on Gilgamesh, even from these two baaaaad communities. Lots of them, but the problem is most of them don't come to this site. *keeps whispering* Yep its true. I even have links to their site asking about roleplaying or expressing interest in roleplaying. Many going to Gilgamesh are on this site already and are just more lurkers than anything, so we will meet many of them during beta 4, early access and launch. Rping on Gilgamesh is going to require more patience. You may not always get rp when you want it and how you want it (though I seriously doubt this honestly I think we will be just fine from the get go). Those who are strong enough to endure the beginning will persevere there. Strong Free Comany leaders who are moving their free companies there will shine like a diamond on a clear summer day. We all are new, and there will be trials and tribulations but those who are of strong spirit and drive will make it succeed. During beta 4 I got a lot of interest going there, people are downright happy that roleplayers will be there. One person told me they were very happy about how diverse the community will be with the addition of roleplayers. So it definitely has its pros and cons and I won't lie to anyone about them either. But I also know the full truths about BOTH servers. If you decide to join us I can promise you the rp will NOT dry up. There will be beta 4 established linkshells to connect all the roleplayers. And there are already three events that will be forthcoming between beta 4 and launch so that people will know that there will be roleplaying on the server. So the question is, what do you want to do? Make your decision on what you want to do in the game as a roleplayer and you will have your answer. Something established and with a fine foundation tested tried and true? Or coming to the frontier with the rest of us crazy settlers? Its your choice Welcome to the site!
