I started leveling dragoon for a change... I got into Haukke with another dragoon and a scholar. The tank is a fresh gladiator. When you see that only the tank is still without its job and probably a bit greener than the rest, you know that he will have a bit more trouble to keep aggro, etc. Especially as a gladiator. Anyway. As soon as the timer starts and the barrier fades, the other dragoon rushes in and start aggroing everything. Not absolutely -everything-, but enough to make big pulls, which makes me think he wasn't trying to fuckup the run, just dictate the pace. I almost never leave a dungeon, but this was the last straw for the day. I expected the healer and the tank to tell him to calm the fuck down and let the tank do their job, but both didn't. I was the least well positionned to tell him, but I told him nevertheless. Got to make use of that mentor tag and all that jazz... I left for 3 main reasons: 1) I hate when people think they can take unilateral decisions on how to properly bypass roles and correct behavior. If everyone is fine with it, sure, go for it, but ask first please. I sure would have not been fine with it though, so yeah, I guess it's why you didn't ask. You perfectly knew that nobody would agree to that. Especially to a DPS pulling everything like an idiot. 2) Spineless tank and healer that rolled with it instead of complaining. Maybe they were all together in party though, which could explain that. 3) If the other DPS had been a BLM, SMN or what you have with great AoEs, alright. Your behavior is still obnoxious and rude as hell, but if the tank and heal don't mind, alright then. But we are 2 fucking dragoons with absolutely zero AoE skills at that point. While you are spending your time aggroing and pulling everything, we are left with just me and the tank and heal to mow down mobs one by one... And the heal had other things to take care of anyway considering the amount of mobs around the tank (AND you since you pull). If you can't use your brain for 2 seconds and understand that it's not going any faster that way - quite slower actually since we are single target DPS-ing, and the heal is overwhelmed - then I don't know what to say. If you want to play tank instead of the tank, then play a fucking tank and run it your way. And don't boast and tell me after I threaten to leave that you will manage without me. I'm sure you will. It will just take you 15minutes longer to get the clear. When people can't into basic logic skills. :frustrated: NB: and trying to leave a dungeon when people are constantly pulling things is a nightmare, because 'can't leave while fighting'. Have to take a step back and break combat, as hard as it is. -

As I said above, I personally believe that on a lenghty war of attrition and numbers, Ala-Migho would have eventually fallen, much like the Eorzean Alliance would have without the Warriors of Light. On the limitation of each respective power also, I definitely agree that it works a lot in favor of the Garlics, but we still have to keep in mind that they are also limited by their supplies of Ceruleum, which is mostly concentrated around Camp Blue Fog and the later Castrum Meridianum. They only had access to their reserves back from Ilsabard before the invasion. Also anyway, Garlemald has access to many magic users in their auxilliaries as well. -

Hello, Here are some lore compilation threads that should cover most things: Ala-Migho lore compilation (Sounssy's) Monk lore compilation (Sounssy's) Garlemald lore compilation (Sounssy's) Garlean magitek arsenal (as a bonus) Exactly how technologically advanced was Ala Mhigo? Rather well, especially in the military field. They were the absolute masters of the spear with their lancer legions, even if Gridanians come as close seconds, the art of the spear was born in Ala-Migho. And while it's maybe not a criteria in itself set in stone in the lore, you know as well as I know that the spear has always been the backbone of any decent military on the battlefield for eons. It's the king of the weapons for war. It can also be speculated that Garlemald would have had a LOT of trouble to make Ala-Migho kneel in their golden age before the venue of their King of Ruin. Considering how martial and militaristic they were, they would have welcomed the fight with open arms. I personally think they would not have stood forever alone against the might of the Empire and Magitek of course, considering how even the three cities combined (Gridania, Limsa, and Uld'ah) would have also lost without the help of Louisoix first, and then the Warrior of Light again 5 years later. But considering how Ala-Migho stood in the Autumn War, able to take any other city one to one, and eventually vanquished by the whole Eorzean Alliance (the 3 cities + Ishgard), I would assume that the sheer martial might of Ala-Migho was pretty impressive, and not even for their magics. How powerful are we talking when we say the Monks were powerful warriors? It's hard to speculate on an exact measure of the power of jobs and military corps. But we have to keep in mind that monks are a job form, and as such, jobs in the setting of Eorzea tend to be rather powerful and mighty disciplines lost to time or forbidden for their power alone (like Black and White Magic). The lorebook states that even the mighty mighan lancers worst fear are their own monks, the Fists of Ralgr. This can I think, depict a pretty clear idea how powerful monks probably were once deployed on the battlefield. Add to that what we know of some other jobs in terms of power, and assuming that all jobs come with more or less equal measure of power lore-wise (maybe it's not the case, who knows!), then you have jobs like bards, able to turn the tide of whole battlefield just by singing, or more specifically Black and White Magic, able to endlessly draw their aether from the planet itself, were literally gods wielding almost unlimited amounts of power, bare for the weakness of their frail bodies... So, the thing is, Eorzea has resisted so well to Garlemald precisely due to their proficiency at Magic, a feat that true blooded Garleans are immune to since they can't use magic. They however make great use of the conquered nations that can and field them as auxiliaries. But, magic alone can rival the power of Magitek, if powerful enough. We see thaumaturges able to shoot down Magitek Reapers in some cutscenes (like the battle of Carteneau). But eventually, magitek is still described as the game changer for Garlemald, and combined with the backbone of their full Empire of all the nations they conquered... Well, you get the idea. Have we ever learned what the name and/or location of the Castrum that the Garleans launched their military assault from is? Any details about the attack itself? I don't think so. We don't even know if they use Castra beyond Baelsar's Wall, deep into Garlemald territory... We may probably learn more about that in Stormblood though. -

I think his point was more about using the Dark Arts while not being a Dark Knight. Personally I don't necessarily buy into the idea of "martial arts have been invented everywhere because people needed to fight bare handed in every culture, THEREFORE kung-fu has been created in many other places than in China", but I mean, it's still a possibility I can't rule out. To me it's not so much breaking the lore than just playing out of it. But yeah, it's a delicate question since we don't really know if Dark Arts is a very specific school of using aether (like conjury, thaumaturgy), or just something you can tap into as long as your emotions are strong enough. -

I understand where your reasoning comes from, but I think it's inherently flawed. What it makes true is only that what you evoke is a possibility, not a necessity. You are speaking about the discovery of a science (magical), not about a societal change, fad, meme, or whatever. It would have worked if the premise was instead "dark knights in the sense of champions against injustice probably have risen in most societies, aka batmans". As you say, as long as there is injustice, you will probably have people fighting it pretty much everywhere, in various proportions and scales, but you will always have at least one weirdo doing it. It's a safe assumption, also because we are not talking exactly about a hard scientific discovery. For Dark Arts though... What makes me say it's a science? Because of the name, which is a first hint in itself. And most importantly because of the lore itself: Dark Knights didn't discover the Dark Arts until a long time after their formation. So, saying that Dark Arts is distinct from Dark Knights, even if it's their signature now, is true. Saying that Dark Arts is a possibility out of Ishgard, practiced by people other than Dark Knights, is also true. Maybe with different weapons too, since the blade seems to have very little to do with the Dark Arts themselves. The problem comes when you assert as a fact that it's a necessity. No it's not. It would be like saying that because gunpowder in the 9th century is used by the chinese, that it's used in other parts of the world because everyone is in contact with saltpeter. Well yes, everyone can use it, but not everyone has discovered it at this time. In fact, only the chinese did, as far as we know. Not convinced? We can go with a less specific technics if you want. The wheel? You think that every man culture on the planet discovered it at some early age? Well, actually no. The Incan Empire for example, never invented it, which is quite baffling I can agree, considering the heights of their civilization. Well of course you are free not to believe in that analogy, maybe it's clumsy, maybe I could have found better ones, but the fact remains. I just demonstrated that it's not a necessity by essence by finding two counter examples, which renders invalid the implication of a generality, but still lets valid the possibility of it. In any case, I'm not saying you are doing it wrong or right, or passing any judgement on the matter. I'm just asserting that you are acting out of the lore, or what we know of it. You are not the first one to do so. Many players do. If it's what floats your boat, go for it. NB: also on the fact that we are supposedly all 'making up lore', that's a bit disingenuous. I don't think I have ever been acting out of the lore myself... Possible, but I doubt it. -

It would equally be silly to believe that this 'science' must have been discovered somewhere else. Maybe it has, maybe it hasn't. Why would it have to be by necessity? -
Your role in a party is defined as soon as you get into a dungeon really. Except maybe for tanks that have to wait for their defensive stance, but that's more linked to getting your job proper on top of your class. The job tends to define a lot more what a job is gameplay is about (especially ninja for instance). I would say at level 35-40 you should have a good idea of the type of gameplay you will be dealing with. With the caveat that it might change a lot at 60 (BRD/MCH, BLM, for example). Or that you will just get more tools to handle around the core (like SMN or MNK for example).

I started with a healing class on FFXIV. It was the first time I tried my hand at healing, but granted I also have little to no experience of standard trinity themeparks, since I'm an eve online vet (but hated healing in there anyway). So I mained WhM up until very recently, and had great fun with it. I am also good at it so it makes things more enjoyable as a whole. I also leveled my jobs to 60 by now (with the exception of PLD and WAR, DRG being on its way). I take great interest in discovering all the specific mechanics and the feel of every class. I love most of them up until lvl40-50 most of the time. Past that it start to get more difficult and demanding, and a lot of jobs fall out of favor with me for that reason, while a few ones will stick out and I will like them even more that way. So, I love White Mage, which is also why I really like AST since they are very similar all in all. I just feel WhM could get some love in high end stuff, but maybe it was meant to be more novice friendly before people move on to more competitive healing classes like AST or SCH (even if I really dislike that idea). But whatever. I leveled up MCH just after WhM, and really liked it until... I hated the guts of it past 50. In part due to all the glitches and shit we had to deal with before they got fixed (procs showing up too late, underwhelming class, etc). I also dislike the use of turrets (and pets most of the time), that I feel are like a hassle to handle with serious play in mind. But most of all, it's a very messy job that is perhaps the worst you could choose when you play on NA servers from the EU, since so many skills to weave in between skills in the rotation. You get into a frenzy of whack a mole to trigger all those OGCD and procs that lit up every once in a while, and I dislike that. I loved the mobility though, but gauss barrel made it even less fun to play for me. I had more luck with monk, which is a job that I still really like. I like its technical difficulty, while still being one of the most straighforward job ever. It's a lot of muscle memory, and flows really well, so I liked and still like. It's just a very exhausting job when you want to play it well. Especially at 60. Then I tried other jobs. I hated Ninja, since low level rog is super generic and even more boring than other DPS classes (except dragoon), and past 50 it starts to get rather complex and super messy in my opinion. Also tried SMN, which make me like the caster style even more after WhM. Way more calm. Less reactivity, more planning. But SMN is stupid easy so I moved on. Leveled up some jobs for the crossclasses mostly, but then went up to lvl60, like bard. GLD and MRD for crossclasses as well, and DRK to try tanking too, but it made me clear on that I dislike tanking overall. I liked DRK mechanics quite well but nope. I'm sure WAR is fun too, but the tanking part of it still makes me cringe. I still have to level SCH, but that job really doesn't attract me at all. So yeah, the class that clicked immediately for me was BLM. To the point I made it my main. I like the slow, hard hitting nukes, and its surprising amount of math and planning you have to understand if you want to go in depth with the job. Mechanics are rather straightforward and finely designed (which is something I seem to like) while still offering challenge and planning. And doing crits at 15k or double flares to make tanks life miserable it fun anyway.

I guess it's possible? I mean, Dalamud didn't crash and was stopped before by Louisoix, but many pieces hit the ground and caused immense damage everywhere on Eorzea. I can imagine that pieces of that magnitude, with enough speed and mass, can definitely provoke tsunamis when they fall into the water. Something you might want to consider though that for the chunks we have seen that fell on the surface (cf Coils of Bahamut), they seem to have so massively killed everything around that huge spires of crystalized aether and corrupted aether have risen all around, like in La Noscea, the Shroud and Thanalan. It's... well, maybe there are others in the world, but they probably are landmarks. Also, if your isle was protected, out of curiosity, why would your character have an extra motivation to come to Eorzea?

I generally tend to take the first time of the day that is and stick with it. Like, if it's the morning when I start the RP, then I mention it ICly, and people sometimes change it when it makes sense by mentioning it as well, or rolling with it... I like doing it organically. I don't mention it ICly all the time though. Just when I feel like it. We had fog setting up over an event once. It was unexpected and created interesting shenanigans. I tend a lot more to take the actual weather into account, a lot more than the time of the day (that is pretty silly going so fast). Weather can change more easily.

You put the finger on something that has always ruffled me the wrong way with the lore, because it apparently makes zero sense indeed. So, firstly, being out of the Pact means not being allowed in the Shroud, period. That's why Gerlmorrans lived underground, and why Duskwights continue to do so. The pact was made between Elementals (of the aetherial plane), and mankind (of the physical plane). It was concluded after Moogles teached gelmorrans how to conjury and how to hear and reach out to the elementals, and how to appease them. I also don't subscribe to the belief that Elementals are against civilization. That's possibly an interpretation of it though, that could make sense after the War of the Magi as a logical conclusion for them to do. But Elementals also tend to exhibit that very alien, different plane of existence feel that the lore and the MSQ showed us a few times already. It was even stated (by Y'mithra right?) that they dont speak our language, don't think like we do, they are beings of pure eather, and communication with them is in itself a feat. It is very possible that the only thing they see, is forest imbalance that has to be corrected. The Gridanian explanation though is that every man in the Shroud, Keeper or Elezen or Hyur or anyone else, is bound by the Pact to the Elementals, because we have to remember that man was banned from there after the fall of Amdapor and the war of Magi. Keepers poach, and that's a fact. They seem to cause the same amount of damage to the balance of the wood like the Gridanians could do. The problem is not civilization or not, but the balance of the wood to be threatened or disturbed. Gridanian quests often go at a great lenght to show how the conjurers of Stillglade Fane send requests to the Wailers and God's Quiver with the aim to cull X or Y population of animals or vegetals because that's what the Elementals point out. When Keepers start to disturb that balance since they don't exactly conjure and attune to the Elementals, it tends to spill over indiscriminately over every man in the Shroud. This is incidentally why Gridanians are so wary of Keepers, that they consider as poachers. That is, however, the Gridanian centered view of things, and while there is probably some truth to it, there is also possibly some bias like it is often the case with most subjective points of view in the lore. What we don't know also, is how much time Keepers have been living here for. Were they already living there when the Ixal were still the sole sentient inhabitants of the region and Gelmorrans confined to their caves? Or did they come after the Pact and the foundation of Gridania? This to my eyes, changes almost everything, because in the latter case, they probably are bound to the Pact like their Gridanians peers, since they showed up after. If they were already living there quietly before however, then it raises a lot of interesting and disturbing questions indeed. How did they co-exist with the Ixal if so? And that could also mean that the Elementals did forgive them sooner the deeds of the Amdapori/Mhachi/Nymians that made them cause the 6th Umbral Calamity. That could mean they didn't care about Keepers indeed because they were way closer to nature (but I also find that a point of contention itself because they still remain sentient and are not pure animals, and have a culture and civlization of their own). In short? Too many unknowns for me to be able to tell properly what's up with Keepers and the Pact. We only have the Gridanian version.

To be honest, I don't buy much into that either, just saying that stretched explanations could still be found I believe. Like, nothing is said that the Meracydian miqo'te migrated to Aldenard... over the ice, right? They just happened to migrate during the 5th Umbral Era, and maybe we mixed up that with the Ice Calamity and made a shortcut of both out of it as it seemed logical? Maybe they migrated with... boats? Thing is, we are speaking about the 5th Umbral Calamity. This is hundred of years after the fall of the Allagan Empire, thus the migratory wave is definitely not fleeing the Allagan Empire, or they would have done so during the 4th Umbral Era (Earth Calamity). There is something in there that is pestering me, in that it is said that the Allagan Empire persecuted miqo'te from Aldenard, which made them flee to Ilsabard, probably around the 4th Umbral Era and the Fall of the Empire, or even before. How Seekers managed to live in such a cold place is beyond me, but that's another story and can probably be explained anyway. But. If the Allagan used to persecute miqo'te tribes in Aldernard, why? Were they Hyur supremacists and did that to all other races? Or where there only Hyurs/Allagans living there, with a few miqo'te? What were the demographics of the Allagan Empire? But the question remains, why where they persecuting them? Because Meracydia was full of them? Because Meracydia was THE enemy to put down? That's a possibility that can make a lot of sense. So, in short we have the Allagan Empire that persecutes the miqo'te living in Aldernard, and is still at war with Meracydia, and this is the 3rd Astral Era. Then the 4th Umbral Calamity of Earth happens, the Allagan Empire crumbles and the Syrcus Tower is buried. Meracydia by that time though, saw the victory of Allag and got turned into a wasteland, with very, very few survivors that shut their doors to anyone. That by itself, makes it hard to believe that those handful of meracydian survivors left and emigrated. They could however have done so before the downfall of Bahamut and the Warring Triad, and the annihilation of their land. Where would they have gone? Possibly Aldenard. Where they got persecuted by their victors, and oppressors, which further make them flee to Ilsabard (also controlled by Allag, which makes that weird as you say, so they were just probably fleeing endlessly across continents all controled by their enemy, everywhere, since Allag was basically dominating all the planet anyway by now). Then, the Allagan fall happens. Those miqo'te survivors have made a very long journey over generations to Ilsabard, an inhospitable land with harsh climates. The 4th Astral Era (The Forgotten Age) unfolds, and people are oppressed everywhere under radical obscurantism, until the 5th Umbral Calamity happens and frozes everything beyond the tropics and allows those same miqo'te to get back to Aldenard over the frozen sea, since Gyr Abania is blocked. Well, that's how I understand it, but I may have missed things, or just be wrong mind you. But we have to keep in mind that we are speaking of a period that spans over 500 years, between the 3th Astral Era and the 5th Umbral Era.

- There are RPers that play with the spellblade concept in mind. It's a recurring thing. - As far as I know there is very little, of nothing, in lore regarding spellblade weapon enhancements, except through Magitek (cf the second fight with Legatus van Hydrus in the Aetherochemical Facility as the best example), which is something totally different and the opposite of magic.

- If you feel the need to get out of the frame of the lore, then you have a creativity problem, or probably try to shoehorn something in the wrong setting. - Edgy is rubbish. Same for weebs. Both combined are above and beyond the gutter. I don't need more. The rest on RP etiquette is just common sense.

Interesting tidbit, but maybe that peculiar passage is not actually speaking of the same event? What prevents the main miqo'te migration to happen out of Meracydia during the Endless Frost, while another happens in Ilsabard, at the same time or after, whatever? In short, maybe there were several miqo'te migratory waves during that umbral era?

Be cautious with colonialism though, since Sharlayan is all but an imperialistic power, quite the contrary in fact. They are pure isolationists. The analogy with colonialism was only to be taken in their attitude towards foreigners, especially Eorzeans, I believe. Miqo'te lifespans are similar to hyurs, as well as all other races except elezens that tend to mature a bit later, and live a bit longer. I would also expect natives from Sharlayan to have a way longer average lifespan than most eorzeans, that have to contend with so many threats, monsters and the likes, and just because sharlayans are all more or less librarians and scholars and whatnot, so they probably live longer than farmers and people having to deal with many more hardships every day. Thavnair is interestingly enough, such a huge commerce hub that they managed to sign a deal of neutrality with Garlemald.

Putting the emphasis on that, it is also said that all of the airship aetherial and magitek technology is regulated and distributed by Sharlayan in Eorzea. At least at the start of 2.0. A bit like a ruling, independent body with authority over the matter. Make of that what you wish.
