1. Try to go in order here... Yeah, there are definitely characters out there that RP with an Ishgardian, Ala Mhigan, and even a Garlean background. In the case of the Garlean characters, there's a mix of both defectors, refugees, deserters, and even loyalist spies. The sky is the limit, pretty much! You've got the right of it though- the Garleans are the big baddies. You're also correct- the original Au Ra refugees arrived via sea in Ul'dah, and the port they put in at is connected to Limsa. It's not a big stretch at all, I think. Maintenance happens on a need-to-work basis. There wasn't a maintenance today, for example. Beyond being ridiculously lucky post-maintenance, it's pretty well impossible to create new characters. I, personally, played elsewhere and then transferred over 4 months back. You can move multiple characters at once for that $18 fee too. You've got to figure that not only is it an investment, but that also your time spent trying to get into Balmung is worth money as well (ex., if you get paid $18 an hour at work, an hour of your time is worth $18- so if you're going to spend more than an hour's time trying to get into Balmung, it's "cheaper" to just pay for the transfer).
2. Thanks! Actually, all those scenarios sound like they'd be perfect to me! Kasi would certainly be laying a lot of culture down for Syndra in the process too. It'd be fairly easy- I think- to get some rumors about her around the Ul'dah markets, if that helps! She's going to be well-known foremost for always keeping her word, and not being motivated primarily by gil, either. Depends on how deep in you'd like to go, but if nothing else? We can just as easily pick a spot somewhere and throw an encounter down!
3. The only sure fire way to get into Balmung is via the server transfer for $18, sadly. A new character must be 72 hours old (not played) in order to be elligible for transfer. It's pretty much impossible to create a character on the server directly, unless you get ridiculously lucky right after a maintenance window. Your time is probably a little more valuable than that. Not the best news, I know... I had to do the same thing.
4. You, sir, are more than welcome to poke me for RP when you see me around!
5. Hey there, welcome back to the game, and welcome aboard to the RPC! As for where to go? Well, the Quicksand Adventurer's Guild in Ul'dah is the most obvious first-stop, really! That place is banging along 24-7 with tons of RP'ers and plenty of chances for walk-up RP and single-encounter stuff with new people every day. That being said, the Quicksand isn't the only option here- you can make connections here on the RPC too (which is what I do because Kasi isn't really a bar-hangout kinda girl) just by creating a Making Connections post if you have a good idea about what you're looking for (which it seems to me that you have a good start!). This thread may net you a few of these too! The more connections you can get (consistent ones, that is), the more opportunity for storylines you'll have. You can figure on meeting connections of connections too. If your goal is to be able to fill up an entire evening with RP, that's certainly an attainable goal here! Just on what you've said so far about Saraune, it's arguable she could run into Kasi. Kasi is a traveling mercenary and trader, with a flair for exploration and getting a chance to be out-and-about. She has an agreement with a similar character for exploring ruins where she'll act as escort and muscle for the ventures. Kasi is also pretty experienced with the lance and greatsword, and she'd certainly be willing to teach Miqo'te, or others who have befriended her over time. You're certainly welcome to stop on by!
6. Thank you so much for the advice. Hearing that you were in this position only a few months ago is reassuring. I can imagine my design changing and being reshaped quite often. Already I'm having second thoughts about the original ideas I had when posting this thread, haha. I've never really dealt with creating OC's in the manner required for RP such as that in FFXIV. It'll be fun figuring it all out. Playing my character OOC for some time in order to come to grips with the game and "living" the lore sounds like a plan. I fret over the smallest things, like which class to start as. The sole reason for my worry being the city-state that'll be tied to my character. If only for the fact that I want with an icon that looks nice next to whichever GC my character becomes a part of. I'm ridiculous. Figure it this way- the community isn't going to be going anywhere if you take that month to cook. When you're set and ready to go, just toss up a Making Connections- that's pretty much your gas pedal right there! A Making Connections post is a lot more effective too when you have a pretty good idea of what other types of characters who would interact with your own fairly well. As for city-states? Yeah, that can get a bit murky. You can change to a different class once you hit level 15 (as well as Rogue, which you can't access at creation) though so it's not too hard to start as one class for the city-state allegiance, and then move over. Still, Gridania, Ul'dah, and Limsa aren't the only city-states; there's also Ishgard to the north (which is featured prominently in the game towards Heavensward), and Ala Mhigo (which was conquered and will feature prominently in Stormblood). There's also the Garlean Empire as another potential origin point for RP characters. There's a ton of options there, though they may not all look very pretty on the character sheet. I can totally appreciate wanting to keep it nice and clean and consistent. I did the same for Kasi.
7. I'm certainly happy to throw Kasi in Syndra's direction sometime soon! Kasi makes regular trips out towards Ul'dah and Gridania to conduct business, trade, and pick up new job contracts, and from there she roams pretty far and wide. You can read a bit about Kasi from her RPC profile in my signature, if you're interested- let me know if anything catches your eye as a potential hook! For what it's worth, Kasi has the potential to be either a friend or an enemy- and certainly some muddled combination of the two. She's the kind of mercenary that doesn't take her job personally; she'll drink, cook (mmmm meat), and have a good time with you one day, and take the job to collect a bounty on your head the next. Everyone's gotta make a living somehow!
8. Glad to be here! I'm not sure how long it'll be before I've sorted everything out with my character... I've been sitting in character creation for a while, but tbh it's just making me feel pressured into choosing things I might regret later on, so I'll probably hold off actually creating my character until I've got everything planned out. Thank you for the suggestion - I'll definitely make a thread over there once I'm ready! Super excited to get involved aaaaah. As someone who was in your position 4 months ago? Whew, yeah, it's like drinking from a firehose pretty much, 'cause it's a totally new game, with new lore, and you want to get it right. The best advice I can offer you is choose something that you find aesthetically pleasing and would love to use- a blank slate. Leave the concept on the table for now as very general and vague. Then, just focus on leveling up, getting through the MSQ, and scouting / lurking the community. You can take your time with fully developing your character over the month it'll probably take to do all this- and honestly, your design will probably change a few times with all the lore you'll be digesting from doing the MSQ (not to mention playing with the all the classes your character can actually be). Reading the lore is vastly different from living it, too. In essence, you're taking the time to 'bake' the character to be ready for RP and giving yourself leeway to learn everything you can, too! This is pretty much what I did- my first month was spent mostly OOC, figuring out how I wanted to do Kasi. By the end of that month, Kasi's original concept had changed maybe 3 times in pretty drastic ways (like originally I wanted to do Bard, but ugh, I ended up hating the job)- but then, there was a clear direction in mind, and everything fell into place. As soon as the stars align, and you know where you want to be, finding linkshells and free companies is as easy as pie!
9. Hey there, and welcome aboard to the RPC! You're in excellent hands here already. Once you've got your character ironed out and have a better idea of what you're going to plot as a direction, I'd suggest creating a Making Connections post if you aim to try and get into RP as quickly as possible. That'll give you a pretty big leg-up on things right out the door!
10. Everyone else already covered pretty much everything so... Welcome aboard to the RPC and FFXIV!
11. Hey there, and welcome aboard to the RPC! If you make the jump and start looking for connections on Balmung, let us know!
12. Hey there, and welcome aboard to the RPC Sky! You may want to consider taking the plunge to move over onto Balmung, as this is where the major bulk of the RP community is located. It's admittedly a bit of a pain since character creation is locked down pretty well 24-7, so the only sure-fire way to move over is via the $18 transfer fee. Still, as someone who took this plunge 3 months ago? No regrets! There's also the added benefit of there being no RMT spam. If you decide to move over, we can potentially work out character connections and encounters! Either way, best of luck!
13. Hey there, and welcome aboard to the RPC! For starters, you might want to just browse around characters on the RPC Wiki, which will give you some ideas as far as how characters work. Past that, the Quicksand Adventurer's Guild in Ul'dah is the place to go if you're looking to cut your teeth on RP. You can just sit back and watch, or engage a few walk-ups and take your first forray!
14. See, unlike you, I actually have to approach people to let them know I exist. I've made all different types of characters over 20+, just trying to get people to notice me and accept me into their rp groups. I probably have spent over 100 dollars on fantasias and name changes alone. It's always different reasons: If you play a miqo'te you're a slut, if you play an Au Ra you're weeb trash. If you play an lalafell, you're not taken seriously. If you play a midlander, you're boring and unoriginal. These are the many conflicts I have that I've heard from others when I make my characters. I can't find that niche. Man I dunno. I think it just takes time and devotion to a singular character. Breaking out into a community is a rather lengthy process- for me, it has taken several months of devoted play and outreach, and I finally feel like I'm about there. Still, it's not something that I've ever stopped doing. I don't think you can stop doing outreach and networking- it's like chasing the horizon. I can't say I've run into the problems you have, but granted, most of my networking is here on the RPC and in the FC realms. I don't hit the Quicksand or community eventus, usually. If you have a Miqo'te, I can offer some connections there- that's pretty low hanging fruit.
15. My suggestion here is pretty straightforward. This community is positively massive- you have a lot of options to reaching out and networking. Even different events have different mini-communities built up around them, so a poor experience at one event may fly in the face of a great experience at a totally different one. If the well is dry in one area, move to another and try there instead! Making character connections is honestly a full-time job as much as RP'ing is- you just have to keep trying, not lose hope about it, be patient, and over time you'll make the connections you want. Don't give up!
16. Hey there, and welcome aboard to the RPC! Looking great on Koh's character biography- you've done really well! Sounds like a pretty interesting character.
17. Sounds like a good plan to me! A general direction is about all I need. I should be online most of today, but otherwise I'm online from 5-11PM CST on the weekdays, and all day on the weekends. I'll keep an eye out for ya.
18. This certainly caught my attention! Black magic? Vague, black market connections? Sign me up! There's a few ideas off the top of my head that I have... Kasi probably wouldn't be an antagonist to Arin purely because she refuses to fight with other Miqo'te. She's something of a racial nationalist there. Of course, there might be circumstances where Kasi could take a job (bounty, perhaps?) targeting Arin without knowing Arin is a Miqo'te, even though she'd certainly be sure to ask beforehand. It just means the employer lied. Kasi as a friend and ally is probably far more likely though. While intelligent, Kasi is anything but booksmart, so she leans heavily on those around her to give her access to the knowledge contained within the written word. She's the brawn side, really, with a bit of brain. She's got a few ongoing projects in that department. She also has black market connections as part of her mercenary work, and turns a blind eye to things like slavery and the dark arts for the most part. You're welcome to browse Kasi's RPC page, too! Let me know if anything catches your eye or if this sounds interesting enough!
19. Wiki formatting isn't TOO bad. If you want a quick and easy start, just login to the Wiki (make an account if needed) and click the Edit tab on Kasi's page. You can copy and paste this for your own, then just modify the content for Django. Some folks have much more fancy pages but I'm an advocate for the KISS principle. I see! That actually could work rather well for an initial encounter- Kasi comes after Django as part of a small bounty that some stuck-up Ul'dahn politician put out. Of course, seeing that he's just a kid- a reality not conveyed to her when she took the job- is going to change some things pretty fast. Kasi might be a mercenary for hire, and have almost as much combat experience as Django is old, but she tries to avoid violent outcomes (it attracts attention and is bad for business). It could end up with them making a deal of some sort, and that could lead to a mentorship potentially. How's that strike you?
20. Hey there, and welcome aboard to the RPC! Your writeup looks pretty good! I especially love the character quirks you've got going on there. Mmmm butter.
21. Hey there! I'll toss Kasi into the ring here. I'm always looking for a few more connections for her that'll pop up fairly frequently. Have you come up with a basic RPC Wiki biography for Django yet? Just with what you've said here so far, I could pitch Kasi a number of ways. She's always looking for a good friendly brawl for starters- even something as simple as arm wrestling. If he's doing questionable things it's entirely possible someone might take a contract out on him that'd involve a mercenary like Kasi. Kasi's got her own moral code she lives by- way of the warrior. You're certainly welcome to browse Kasi's RPC page and let me know if something else catches your eye!
22. Afraid most people here are on Balmung, but nevertheless, best of luck with your venture!
23. Hey there, and welcome to the RPC! Best place to go to see it in-action 24/7 is at the Quicksand Adventurer's Guild in Ul'dah. There's a swarm of people tagged up for RP there at all hours of the day, and you can observe from a distance easily from there. It's also a good spot to cut your teeth on getting into RP too- walk-ups (aka PUG RP) are very common there.
24. All these goody two shoes in one place. A wise man once said, "Evil will always triumph over good... because good... is dumb." But in all seriousness, Deahfel is a bang-up coordinator, RP'er, and I'm certain you can expect some action being around her!
25. No, it's just that you can't create new characters on the server. The only sure-fire way to get into Balmung is to pay the $18 transfer fee, which also allows you to transfer a number of characters at once. It also ensures there's no gil trade spam, either. But, yeah, it's kind of a pain.
