  1. I'm just hoping this comes to PC. Want. Until then, have to stick to a heavily modded FF7 on Steam...
  2. I'll do and get involved with just about everything, though I have a special place in my heart for subversive lawful evil villains, and the conflict RP they create. They are villains who are "justified" to act the way they do, that are perfectly relate-able, even personable and friendly people, but ultimately follow a path of darkness with an ideology that the ends justify the means. It's a twisted code of ethics that can lead to some moral dilemmas for other characters, and it's interesting to see how they respond and deal with someone like that.
  3. What Warren said. The biggest issue in FF14 is that the timeline doesn't equate to real time like, say, GW2. Everything that has happened since 1.0 has happened within the same calendar year, which is 5 years after the calamity (somehow the world has recovered quite a lot, leading me to assume that perhaps Hydaelyn has 48 hour days or something nifty. Basically, in their world, little time has passed. That... actually makes a whole lot of sense to me- I like the idea of playing it safe when it comes to the timeline, considering just how compressed it seems to be. Having their master retire to walk the world sounds like a much smoother idea than the one I had. It's kinda funny that I'm much more used to the GW2 timescale as it stands. This is some awesome stuff. Thanks!
  4. The sure-fire way to get onto Balmung is to transfer in, which runs $20 (also note that while SE says you can't do this to locked servers, you can, in fact, do so). If you choose to transfer, also note that you can move multiple characters into the server at once for the same price if they're all coming from the same server. It may be worth making alts. That being said, I had a friend recently able to create a character on Balmung almost immediately after a server maintenance reset. Either of these will work! I recently had to do this myself with a few friends about 2 weeks ago now. In any case, welcome to the community!
  5. Well, either this was so utterly terrible nobody wanted to touch it with a ten-foot pole, or as we like to say in information technology, "No news is good news." Talk about extremes! I'd still love a sanity check here either way- feedback and criticism are both very much welcome! Does the lore seem right? Is the concept too "out there?" Or is my understanding of the lore pretty spot-on here?
  6. I'll echo the sentiment of Warren and Hat. "Slice of life" stuff is all well and good and can be nice to fill in the gaps, but if you want something more persistent on a regular basis with the same people, it helps a ton to set some kind of a direction, purpose, or goal for a character. What's Melodia want out of life? Where's she want to go? What's she want to do? What kind of aspirations does she have? Once you have that answered, you can seek out and find other characters who are on that same path or characters that can help her obtain her goal. At that point, I think you can expect to run into those characters more often on a regular basis, because they become central to each other. Best of all, that means much less effort having to constantly find new characters to meet to replace those that fall away over time. Take a swing at it!
  7. Is there something in particular you're looking for in terms of recurring encounters?
  8. Welcome aboard to the community! NWN was some amazing RP times. I miss those sprees. I haven't seen a whole lot of Rogue's Guild stuff around so far, though, but I'd love to see more of that. L'anayla and her wife were at one time thieves and pickpockets, and to some degree they still are, but they moved into the ninja territory and now lead a double-life to keep a low profile while they work.
  9. L'anayla is trying to solicit critiques on a new tea brew she's created, and she's offering it for free to boot! L'anayla observes someone eating bread or a bread-related product and decides to impart her disgust (she has a wheat allergy) while trying to convey her belief in uncompromising meat supremacy. L'anayla gets into a scuffle (again) with her wife, Kips, and tries to get a (unwise) third party to tip the scales into her own favor for a change. L'anayla has to distract her wife, Kips, away from someone else to give them a rest from Kips' hyperactive and in-your-face tendencies. L'anayla interacts with a person-of-interest to help her analyze and gather information subtly by means of small talk- rumors, gossip, or personal information- and ultimately build a dossier for later use.
  10. Yeah, I'd seen that thread too. There isn't a whole lot of information, especially since there isn't an official timeline from SE. It's all fairly open ended and the players try to read between the lines to piece it all together. I eventually settled for my own character's timeline being a little vague. From what I can tell, it's currently the end of the Seventh Umbral Era / beginning of the Seventh Astral Era, not the Eighth: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Seventh_Umbral_Era Supposedly, we're currently trying to usher in the new Seventh Astral Era, while some big baddie is trying to usher in the Eighth Umbral Era with another grand calamity? Or something like that. I think that player timeline is largely accurate. I certainly haven't seen anything that discounts it. ARR's release would have been at year 5, but there's nothing that really says how much time has passed since then, which is probably going to be your biggest problem. With a lot of MMO's, time doesn't seem to flow at a RL pace- but that might be the only real option you have to use. That's my understanding of it- and I admit, this might not be entirely accurate either. It's what I've been able to piece together so far. Frankly I'm as interested in this as you are, so if someone else has a better idea, I'd love to hear it too.
  11. Hey y'all! I'm gonna own up right now in that while I've got maybe a month of play time to my name in FFXIV about 2 years ago, I never really paid much attention to lore. I'm now about a week and 2 days into actually diving into this stuff truly for the first time, I'm only level 42 (I don't mind spoilers), and I'm trying to drink from the firehose, pretty much! What's worse is that unlike some other MMO's with really in-depth wiki articles, I haven't been able to find much for FFXIV- everything has been pretty lean. I've done a few forum searches and I found this thread, which was a REAL help for getting some things straight in my head: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=14035 Either way, I just want to make sure I'm not running afoul of any problems in what lore there is, so I'd be really appreciative of any feedback you can give me! Nothing here is really set in stone- I'm pretty open to making adjustments wherever needed to correct problems and smooth the story out. So! On with what I've got so far. Sorry for the wall of text. I still need to make a wiki page, I know! And that's about it. I think I managed to get most of what was going on in my head. Would appreciate any thoughts on this! Thanks!
  12. Welcome aboard to the community! I'm kinda in the same boat as you- I'm a week and a few days in so far, and trying to figure out the lore can be like drinking from a firehose. What's more is that there isn't a whole lot of chronicled lore like on a wiki, so there's a lot of forum browsing and needing to ask questions about it in order to get the whole picture. Folks around here are pretty awesome though and willing to provide answers!
  13. If this is still active I'd love to get in on this as well! I'm sure my counterpart would like to get in too. Our character names are L'anayla Aliaru and Kipra Aliaru. Thanks!
  14. L'anayla's chocobo is a Ul'dah chocobo she named Blaze. Up until the point she rode him for the first time, she'd never gone that fast, and L'anayla discovered she likes going fast. Blaze can't really complain- he seems to like running all over the place too. Blaze generally tries to support L'anayla in combat, but can have a little trouble moving through confined spaces and tight turns- and L'anayla seems to love weaving in and out in close-quarters rather rapidly. When the two of them are resting, L'anayla doesn't hold back with the greens. Blaze is also "friends" with L'anayla's wife's chocobo, Dorp, whom they're quite sure is mentally challenged with his tendency to try and attract the attention of anyone and anything with his constant "Wark!"-ing. Unfortunately this usually means monsters. In these cases, Blaze will usually try to help Dorp survive the encounter.
  15. Welcome aboard! Just helped a couple friends transfer in and have been giving them a hand with the whole process. Early content looks pretty well populated still- we haven't had any problems finding groups so far. Copperbell has been something of a pain recently, but I think it's bad luck on the draw. Queue times have been around 10 minutes. The player economy is really good too!
  16. Awesome! Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm used to. It's totally new to me having an actual in-world clock though- made me curious if it worked any differently here. Thanks for all the answers!
  17. Wow, thanks y'all! Some really great answers here! One more question for now, at least- this one is much more minor but as I'm planning out my character, it popped into my head. How do most people handle the time of day in-game? I noticed there's a game world clock, a server clock, and a real world clock. The night-day cycle is pretty striking and even city music changes depending on what time it is. Do people RP according to the time of day in the game world, or is it more by the server / real world clock? Or does it mostly just get ignored?
  18. Hey there! A best friend and I are hoping to make the move over to FFXIV here in the next few days, and are looking forward to getting involved in the community here, making new contacts and hopefully even finding an RP free company! We're both pretty much new to the RP community here- I played for a month back in 2013 just to explore the game world but never really interacted with anyone. So! That changes right now. I've been RP'ing for the last 13 years across a good number of games- NeverWinter Nights, Guild Wars, World of WarCraft, Guild Wars 2, WildStar and a few other games here and there. Generally I've stuck to RP in the realm of lawful neutral to lawful evil characters- though I'm not quite settled on what I'm doing here yet. About all I know is that I'll probably end up as a Miqo'te! But, on to the important questions-- One major question I have though is in regards to the Balmung server. Currently, I have a character there already which I'm going to repurpose for RP, but my friend is totally new to the game and hasn't been able to create a character on Balmung. After extensive Google'ing, it sounds like server transfers are the only way to get onto Balmung as of 4 months ago. However, the S-E page for server transfers says that server transfers won't work for going to a character-locked server. Is this true? Or do server transfers to Balmung still work? I understand the Quicksand adventurer tavern is a major RP hotspot. Are there any others that I should be on the lookout for? Thanks very much, and I'm looking forward to getting to meet y'all! :cactuar:
